I was born in E. Machias in 1948 we lived in Allagash around 1952 (My dad was pastor of the Baptist Church) in l959 we moved from Contoocook NH (my mother’s and grandparents home town) to Florida following US1 all the way. I have been to Key Wrst a couple of times so yes I have been on every foot of US1.
I used to live on Rt 1 in a house right across from what is now the residence Inn in Bath. I was in the Navy in the early 1970s and 3 of us rented that place. The hotel had a different name then and the owner let us park there as the owner of the house gave up his driveway rights to the state for the road. We would run across the 4 lane all the time. I’ve been all over Maine growing up and in the service. I even canoed the Allagash River and skied many places including Sunday River when it just had a day lodge. My best friend’s parents grew up in Caribou and they had a cabin on Madawaska Lake that I’ve been to a few times.
Funny….with two careers, (U.S. Navy and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), and even growing up, US 1 has been an important part of my life. Pre I-95, US1 was the way my Dad, stationed at Cape Kennedy, would take us “back home” (he was from PA) on summer vacations. Then on my own, my Navy career (Jacksonville FL, Kings Bay GA, Newport RI, Brunswick ME,) then my USFWS career at National Wildlife Refuges from Savannah GA all the way north to Maine….US1 was always an alternative to the madness associated with semi trucks and tourists on I-95. I am still looking for my dream property in coastal Maine. HELP!
