One thing that I appreciate about bad movies nowadays is that I don't see ANY advertisements for these dogshit films. It went from not being able to ESCAPE the commercials, bus stop and train station posters or TH-cam ads to the movie coming out and a TH-cam review telling me it's bad before I even know it existed in the first place

A whole goddamn bomb shelter, built by hand, would need a whole town's worth of men , if not MORE, and all of them going missing didn't set any alarms? And the professor had enough diesel to run power for.... a decade? a decade?
to be fair these criticisms should be given to the author of the book. I quite enjoyed the book as did many others, but the whole missing men thing was true to the book. Not really the directors fault

I know Shyamalan's daughter made this but they both lack the fundamentals of telling a good story. It's unique and interesting and the reveals are fun but they ultimately amount to nothing because there's nothing good about it, no take away, no style or flare. It's like the family creates a cool concept and rides that wave without any further thought. Which is a shame because a filmmaker who funds his own movies is something special I would like to encourage. I didn't hate this movie but I won't remember it either.
This was actually a book that imo is really good. It sounds like they just completely changed it and added scenes that make no sense at all. But if you wanna watch something like this that actually got it right, check out the show From!
One aspect I appreciate about bad movies these days is the lack of advertisements. It used to be impossible to avoid commercials, posters at bus stops and train stations, or TH-cam ads. Now, the movie is released and I learn it's terrible from a TH-cam review before I even knew it existed.
Honestly that's a great premise for a horror movie. Shape shifting slender men watching you to slowly replace you, sounds really good. But then you add the fairy war and just wtf. The less we know the scarier they are. Alfred Hitchcock had it right and we've forgotten

My god-sister went to school with her and participated in the theater program with her there and he would go and see the performances. I got to meet him a few times because of that and he is very nice! I will say I am biased though because I think the show he made for Apple TV, Servant, was really endearing.

From the start of the movie they made it sound like nobody has ever locked eyes with these creatures and survived which was complete BS. They never explained why they had to stand infront of the 1 way mirror. Did anyone get to sleep or did they just stand still like a stick figure until the sun came up? Also why wouldnt the one way mirror be the other way around so they could watch the creatures but not be seen?? At first it was a cool premise and then it kept getting wackier and wackier until I gave up on it
In the book it's explained the professor wants to study them but starts getting unsettled when they take his dead wife's face bc it's not perfect copies, hence the one way mirror could be deactivated.
I really enjoyed The Watchers. I know it’s not the best movie but it’s proof that real cinema is coming back and we’re not just stuck in an era of sequels, prequels, and remakes.
The funny thing is, that the fairies thing actually fits pretty well with traditional pre-kiddification fairy myths (except not in Europe). Read about the Irish Book of Invasions among others for an example, specifically the part about the Tuatha de Danaan (fairies/gods) and the Milesians (mythological first humans to live in Ireland).
I swear to God the premise sounds like Undertale. Humans and faires get in a war because the humans fear their shapeshifting abilities and force them underground. Sounds a lot like the Undertale intro.
Charlie's explanation of digging a whole during the day and coming back out at night is the reverse strategy of what I did when I played Minecraft. When I didn't have enough lumber to build a house, I'd dig a whole and put a trap door in the ceiling to see when the sun came out so I knew I was safe. That's all they gotta do. Just stay out of the sunlight and they'll be fine!

The concept of “the watchers” is a really cool idea. One of the horror podcasts I listen to did a really good job of it and it’s kinda painful for them to take something that has so much potential and absolutely destroy it.

The only argument I could make, without ever seeing the movie, is that classic fairies of European mythos are subject to the laws of hospitality. They will make rules to force people to follow and they will follow rules given to them. The one who disobeys a rule of hospitality first dies.
Something else that could’ve made this movie a hit was if they used creative and stunning creature designs for the Faeries/watchers. Makeup artists like David Martí, who worked on PAN’S LABYRINTH and Trevor Henderson who created the Cartoon Cat and Sirenhead deserve all of their awards and credits for bringing fairytale and arbitrary things to life in an unsettling way. Fantasy and horror is such a perfect mix but it only truly works if the creature design is fantastic. The Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth is the stuff of nightmares, even the Faun is unnerving despite being one of the neutral characters.
I always find it creepier in horror movies, when they give you just enough, they don't show the monster, and you know nothing about the monster because our imagination can make up some of the scariest things, but it's hard to portray that. just be ominous lol
Heres what I would do as a twist: They were all fairies that turned into humans and have been humans for so long they lost sense of their original selves. They would disappear one by one thinking they were killed then last survivor(s) escapes kills the fairies only to realise at the end they were their friends. Better twist than a Shyamalan I know but it did take me a whole 10 seconds to think of
I got so disappointed when it clicked which movie he was talking about. I was looking forward to seeing it. It's not a good interpretation. Yes, the book had plotholes, but at least it explained things! A lot of the questions he raised i was like "they didn’t tell you?". There were multiple things he said that I went "wtf that didn't happen" If you liked the premise, read the book! It was good! In case you didn't know, The Watchers is a book by A.M. Shine 2021.

One aspect I appreciate about bad movies these days is the lack of advertisements. It used to be impossible to avoid commercials, posters at bus stops and train stations, or TH-cam ads. Now, the movie is released and I learn it's terrible from a TH-cam review before I even knew it existed.

Not all of his work is garbage. Split and Knock At The Cabin were pretty good.
My god-sister went to school with her and participated in the theater program with her there and he would go and see the performances. I got to meet him a few times because of that and he is very nice! I will say I am biased though because I think the show he made for Apple TV, Servant, was really endearing.

From the start of the movie they made it sound like nobody has ever locked eyes with these creatures and survived which was complete BS. They never explained why they had to stand infront of the 1 way mirror. Did anyone get to sleep or did they just stand still like a stick figure until the sun came up? Also why wouldnt the one way mirror be the other way around so they could watch the creatures but not be seen?? At first it was a cool premise and then it kept getting wackier and wackier until I gave up on it
In the book it's explained the professor wants to study them but starts getting unsettled when they take his dead wife's face bc it's not perfect copies, hence the one way mirror could be deactivated.

I really enjoyed The Watchers. I know it’s not the best movie but it’s proof that real cinema is coming back and we’re not just stuck in an era of sequels, prequels, and remakes.

The fairies thing makes more sense if you know Irish folklore (it sounds terrible to say) it’s set in Ireland, Galway a lot of folklore there
The funny thing is, that the fairies thing actually fits pretty well with traditional pre-kiddification fairy myths (except not in Europe). Read about the Irish Book of Invasions among others for an example, specifically the part about the Tuatha de Danaan (fairies/gods) and the Milesians (mythological first humans to live in Ireland).
This movie is based off a book by the same name, book has a tone of plot holes and stuff but its way better than the movie, worth a read

I swear to God the premise sounds like Undertale. Humans and faires get in a war because the humans fear their shapeshifting abilities and force them underground. Sounds a lot like the Undertale intro.
Charlie's explanation of digging a whole during the day and coming back out at night is the reverse strategy of what I did when I played Minecraft. When I didn't have enough lumber to build a house, I'd dig a whole and put a trap door in the ceiling to see when the sun came out so I knew I was safe. That's all they gotta do. Just stay out of the sunlight and they'll be fine!

The concept of “the watchers” is a really cool idea. One of the horror podcasts I listen to did a really good job of it and it’s kinda painful for them to take something that has so much potential and absolutely destroy it.

The only argument I could make, without ever seeing the movie, is that classic fairies of European mythos are subject to the laws of hospitality. They will make rules to force people to follow and they will follow rules given to them. The one who disobeys a rule of hospitality first dies.
Something else that could’ve made this movie a hit was if they used creative and stunning creature designs for the Faeries/watchers. Makeup artists like David Martí, who worked on PAN’S LABYRINTH and Trevor Henderson who created the Cartoon Cat and Sirenhead deserve all of their awards and credits for bringing fairytale and arbitrary things to life in an unsettling way. Fantasy and horror is such a perfect mix but it only truly works if the creature design is fantastic. The Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth is the stuff of nightmares, even the Faun is unnerving despite being one of the neutral characters.
I always find it creepier in horror movies, when they give you just enough, they don't show the monster, and you know nothing about the monster because our imagination can make up some of the scariest things, but it's hard to portray that. just be ominous lol

Heres what I would do as a twist: They were all fairies that turned into humans and have been humans for so long they lost sense of their original selves. They would disappear one by one thinking they were killed then last survivor(s) escapes kills the fairies only to realise at the end they were their friends. Better twist than a Shyamalan I know but it did take me a whole 10 seconds to think of
I got so disappointed when it clicked which movie he was talking about. I was looking forward to seeing it. It's not a good interpretation. Yes, the book had plotholes, but at least it explained things! A lot of the questions he raised i was like "they didn’t tell you?". There were multiple things he said that I went "wtf that didn't happen" If you liked the premise, read the book! It was good!
