Time to go full nerd mode and ramble about the practical aspects and viability of whips and whip swords in real life. It's quite a badass looking fantasy weapon, and it may be inspired by the Indian Urumi. Would it be possible to make, or would it even make sense?

South Indian here. Have held the Urumi and spoken to experts. Some facts. Urumi was never a primary weapon. It was worn coiled around the waist like a belt. When surrounded on all sides in a skirmish, you would whip out and flail the urumi around. The biggest challenge of using the Urumi is that you have extremely specific targets. The Carotid artery (place where helmet meets the armor and creates a gap), and the knees. Urumi was also meant to flap around a shield and strike the forearms rendering the opponent unable to hold a shield.
Former Khalsa Sikh here, we actually used it similarly to you guys. The main difference is that instead of going for potentially fatal strikes, Sikhs would use the chuttuval to trip up opponents or, in the case of fighting Mughal cavalry, entangle riders and bring them down from their mount. From there the kirpan or khalsa would come in and do the dirty work.

I think this is late. But as someone from the region where urumi's are extensively used, it's a concealable self-defense weapon mostly. Kinda like a weapon people who wrap around thier waist and tie a cloth around it to conceal, it is mostly not designed to do fatal damage, mostly do deep cutting damage (not fatal but can still be dangerous).
It was not extensively used in wars or battles as it's not very effective against armor and armors once again wasn't as advanced in Asia. Anyway its mostly a non-war time, self-defense weapon that allows a great degree of conceal ability. It is quick good against multi-targets and surprise attacks as it's range and cutting damage can keep enemies at a distance and can let's you escape.
@@markderonde529 It is not theoretical, it is a practical weapon that has been used for a long time. It has its limitations and advantages. Also, it is one of the hardest weapons to master. You can slice of your hand or feet rather fast if you aren't a master.

Urumi was used mostly as a duelling weapon. And both the participants of the duel will carry the urumi. There is an entire folklore around it. It has been barely used in the battleground. And the other thing is it extremely difficult to use. In the martial art of Kalari, urumi is the last weapon to master. It takes a lot of years to get to urumi training itself. And only the warriors carried it around(Think of the Katana and samurais).
The legend is you'd whip the sword and it'll wrap around your opponent's neck. When you pull back the head will come clean off.
PS : I'm not an expert in these things. I just happened to live in the the place it was originated (Northern Kerala).
Dueling? From what I have read about it, it was a melee weapon and certainly makes more sense as a melee weapon. A surprise weapon to get out when ambushed by a group.

if you understand why the Urumi was invented, you will know everything about it.
in ancient times, if you had to carry a weapon around with you,it would usually be a sword or a spear which would not only be heavy and cumbersome but also visible.
if you carried a dagger it wouldn't be visible, but you couldn't defend yourself against multiple enemies.
a whip you could carry tied around your waist and had a long reach, but once the enemy closed the gap, it would be ineffective.(that was a problem with axes as well which is why swords were invented. among other things that make swords superior to axes is that they have sharp edge right up to the hilt).
so to overcome all these challenges, the urumi was created using features of other weapons- 1)the body of the whip gave it long reach and it's flexibility to wrap it around made it invisible and easy to carry around.
2)the sharp edge right up to the hilt was again why swords were invented, to defend against an opponent up close.
once unleashed (pun intended), one could swing it around and cause slashes and cuts to anybody in its range. nobody could get within 6 feet without incurring damages.
However all these multiple advantages meant the urumi could not cause killing blows because it was too thin. If it were not thin, then they could not have been folded and easy to carry around.
this was a self defense weapon intended for civilian use.
however wherever it would hit, it would make lacerations and cause severe bleeding and effectively put that opponent out of the fight. moreover, the sheer dramatic effect of the snake like weapon swinging around, making scary sounds when cutting the air would dissuade most attackers. and those multi bladed urumi....😰

if im not mistaket urumis were usually carried as a bealt, the blade would wrap aroud the wearer's body and the hilt would work kinda like a belt buckel

What if you just use a bow?
I first heard of the Urumi from a Sikh guy at a gym in Coventry, England. When he described it I was highly sceptical about its actual efficiency. He described it as a ceremonial weapon (where we all know that ridiculous is perfectly fine) and as a last resort. It was the latter that intrigued me. He brought his Urumi (no edge) to the gym and attached it to his belt. We heavy sparred with training knives 6 v 1. When we got close he unclipped the Urumi and let loose. We all had full guards on but the effectiveness of it, to displace or fend off a number of attackers was good. The speed he went from knife to a spinning wall of 5 spring steel ribbons was around 1 second. He then returned to knife for a single, controlled attack. And repeat. It'd be easily overcome with basic armour but that wasn't the context of its use. I also attempted to use it and was far more grateful of armour than when I was on the other end of it!

Tony John urumi is practised in martial art of Kalaripayat in Kerala in South India
in Northern India, the Sikh practice it in the martial art of Gatka and the Urumi is called Aara.

I think I remember watching a documentary that had a urumi in it, If i remember correctly, the Urumi was never meant for any form of warfare, it wasn't even designed to fatally harm people. its was specifically used in 1 on 1 dueling in order to settle disputes. they would duel until one gave up.
RustedCrown11 it's the final weapon they teach you in the south Indian martial arts discipline kalari. Historically soldiers do not generally train to such an extend. Besides in a war it would be unpractical. However champions (anga-chekavar) used to use it as you said for settling disputes and also for fighting exhibitions

I think _Deadliest Warrior_ did a test against a pig carcass with an urumi, which they called an aara. It was _Season 2, Episode 6: Roman Centurion vs. Rajput Warrior._ If I remember correctly, it only did superficial damage.

But the tests themselves are sometimes (I repeat, sometimes; not always, not anywhere close to always, but sometimes) valid, despite the show's many flaws and inaccuracies. For example, a claymore would most certainly not have been used by William Wallace, but that does not invalidate that it severed three human neck analogues with one horizontal cut.
The person testing the Urumi had several minutes if I recall correctly to do as much damage as possible, and only did superficial damage. And this was someone trained in how to use an Urumi.
Matthew St. Cyr William Wallace did use a Claymore? The 'Wallace Sword' is the sword gifted to William Wallace. The Sword on display is a Great Sword with Claymore translating to "Greatsword". Although the sword on display has some differences to a standard Claymore it is still considered one. However it was thought he used a standard Claymore during his years of battle until he was given the Wallace Sword.

You can’t really exert all of your strength well with a flexible whip compared to a rigid sword, you’d have to be so much stronger than your opponent to entangle their sword with a whip and get it out of their grip
If your sword wraps around theirs, they could also go for the stab if you are trying to pull.

I actually had a friend who made a wooden mock up of a whip sword (though it couldn't retract obviously) and in sparing matches it was rather effective, provided that neither of us was armored. The moment any form of armor came in the weapon couldn't give enough force to do anything, just like you showed with the basic chain.
Also if I could dodge the initial swing, he would have to rapidly adjust his attack so he didn't nail himself with the thing, which gave me a great chance to counterattack. It made for a very dangerous (if unarmored) weapon, but it was a huge liability when it missed it's target.
The weapon locking was also problematic. The blades were bad to get caught on each other when wrapping around anything, then they had to be manually seperated. The second he locked my sword I would just drop the sword and go in for a kill with my sidearm. (usually a parrying dagger)
That's just my experience with this kind of thing.

Urumi actually have an interesting use as a weapon in that it isn't really meant to do lethal damage, it is meant to keep a bunch of people away from you and disable lags and arms to make it easier to deal with them in combat since it gets around shields and light legging armor and does so at length.

It's often struck me when considering (to put it in D&D/Pathfinder terms) exotic weapons, that the fact that they require specialized training actually is itself an advantage. Especially if you are from a technologically superior force battling more poorly armed enemies (Mughals vs Afghanis or Bengalis, alternatively an occupational force battling rioters or civilian militias), having weapons that they can't just pick up and use against you seems like a serious edge! The mob might be able to bring down one rajput with hurled stones but if anyone tries to pick up his urumi and swing it around at the remaining guards he'll cut himself to ribbons.

A good way to add stability in the sword form is to add interlocking hooks that connect a segment with the ones above and below it

I feel like a Kusarigama is the closest in reality to the feasibility of a blade and chain weapon.
Yeah that what was thinking when he was talking about wrapping the chain around the sword and getting control ,but then you lose the use of the weapon you need something else and I yelled in my head the sickle part of the kusarigam... wished he had talked about it in the video.
I own one of those. I enjoy wielding it (for freestyle martial arts), but it requires a lot of muscle warm-up. If you want to see one in action, Ryu Hayabusa uses one in Ninja Gaiden 2.

Well to be fair to Simon and the Belmont family. They fight monsters. Their whips are probably either drenched in holy water, or imbued with magic that makes the monsters explode upon death.
In the Castlevania TV show, Trevor's whip makes a monster explode. Everyone looks at him until he explains, "The whip's consecrated, for fighting vampires and [monsters]." He does use the whip in fights with humans though, but that's because he's never actually trying to kill during those fights. When he tries to kill, he uses his sword.
ArcticKaiju The Netflix animated series, Trevor after a monster disintegrates after being whipped, and the nearby people looking him with a "wait, what just happened", he just casually mentions "It's consecrated."

Not really though: harpoons are shot with compressed air, not shotgun shells (as far as I know of course)

@@Indicteronomy it does matter, a longbow string or compressed air is a slower acceleration than gunpowder, which itself is much slower than an explosive not designed to burn slowly (such as C4) or the magnetic rails of a railgun. A harpoon may not survive being accelerated that quickly, even outside of water. It may also make it less accurate as harpoon guns are much more accurate than a firearm underwater past a few feet.

@@ntroscorpio2513 That isn’t the point. They’re not claiming that games are 100% accurate (and truthfully, they don’t need to be, entertainment > realism), they’re just saying that there was one instance in a game where it accurately showed the flaw of a whip sword.

What would happen if that user was trained using training methods evolved over many centuries of warfare and the training was for a decade or more. Not to mention the metallurgy for this tool is forever lost just like the training methods and so are the deadliest warriors who wielded them. This tool is from parts of India that made the damascus steel. Hard to objectively evaluate today. Check out Mamamkam movie on Amazon prime, portrays the historical context in which this tool was used.

We could recreate, or even perfect the steel they used, create new training methods for this weapon that are more effective, and overall just surpass all those people.
But this weapon is mostly useless, so it wouldn't be worth the decade of training and the days of forging, because it literally only deals non-lethal but painful cuts, and can't be used against any kind of armor, or in an enclosed area. If you only want to defend yourself, grab a knife or a sword. (Or pepper spray, if you are a normal person, a handgun if American)
If you want to show off, use any other weapon, maybe even a normal whip, and it will be the same.
If you want to fight in a war, then of course this whippy sword would be useless.

Completely agree, nothing like a concealed firearm for personal protection if and when available and legal. But even then, if the defender is not able to clear a firearm jam or there is a malfunction then the resort is a backup knife. Even if there is no firearm failure, sometimes close contact means deploying a knife or dagger to first create distance and then deploy primary firearm. So at a time when there was no firearm, maybe Urumi served some purpose of asymmetric use of force by a well trained warrior against a small group of ordinary soldiers. I.e at that point in history, in those contexts.

Except we know we don’t know everything, and the OP never said that we knew everything, or behaved as if he thought that, he just made the remarks that 1) we know incredibly more on most if not all relevant subjects than the people that invented the weapon being discussed, 2) modern alternatives are just plain better in most scenarii, and there are many ancient alternatives that are far more versatile.
By the way, the current situation proves that we are right to be as arrogant as you think we are, considering that without current technology, communication ,hygiene standards, hospitals, etc, the virus would’ve done proportionally far more casualties.

Not all of Indian subcontinent is the same. There is disproportionately more difference between some Indian states than for example states in the United States. You should look it up. The obvious difference is language and culture but the more relevant one in this context(virus and urumi) is factors like education, male to female ratio, Human Development Index etc.. I tried to understand your points and see some gaps in your perception of reality. In reality, where I live now sheltering in place the official advise is to stay home taking tylenol till I am not able to speak two sentences without losing breath and then call 911. With the Urumi, try to understand what I am saying. Why is there is no competition in Kalaripayatu unlike competition in Karate for example. It is not wise to discard available literature and folkore on the basis of an "episode of deadliest warrior". I haven't used an Urumi, or seen one in action, but from what I know of from Indian martial arts is that it was likely used as a maiming weapon to take advantage of the soldiers' exposed forearms and calves to incapacitate them (these are the targets based on the armour design of most warriors). It couldn't have been used in close formations or on horseback for obvious reasons, however it would've been effective if used in both hands with the rowing techniques of many indian martial arts, that would prevent it from hitting the user by keeping it in continuous motion away from the user, as well as making it difficult to predict the striking pattern to for the opponent. In the martial art Kalaraipayattu that I had learned a bit of for a performance, the movements are so fluid that the weapons barely ever stay still. (I had to perform with a metal short sword and Dhall (a small shield similar to a buckler) with no armour as is tradition.

As a kid I made a whip out of an old chainsaw blade.....it was very devastating to watermelons but was only functional with horizontal and vertical Slash's was not very versatile using like an actual bullwhip send it to come back around and hit the back of the hand painfully 😆

It needs to be spring loaded so it can pull back effectively, and the blade segments should have a trigger loaded lock mechanism so you can choose when to whip and when to stab, also only a short to medium sized sword would be able to do this effectively. Also the spring loaded part will allow for quick drawing of the steel cable and quick deployment of the chain.
No battery required, simple clockwork mechanics all you need to do is replace the parts when needed. Also a weighted tip for velocity the rest being much lighter for movement

However, for a magical solution the best option would be a living sword, metal that can grow and shrink and bend on-demand, solidify at the same rate, etc... What about a "whip sword" with only two segments. The first makes up the bulk of the sword, and is just a fixed blade that can't do any swinging around, and the second is some length at the tip of the sword that can be released at an advantageous time for a whip like effect that happens to have a weighted, sharpened blade at the end of it. Then, while you would have some minor structural weakness from having a hole running down the length of the blade for the chain or cable to run through, you would essentially just have a regular sword when it comes to cuts and defense, so long as you aren't using the very tip for those purposes. And for a thrust, while the tip was retracted, it would be well reinforced by the blade behind it, so it should still be able to work fairly well without excessive tension on the connecting cable. Granted, it doesn't quite live up to the fantasy of a whip sword, but it seems like it would avoid most of the concerns you brought up, while still providing some potential tactical advantage, particularly if it were used primarily for one on one fights.
So, a bladed nunchuk without the main benefits of a sword OR the main benefits of a nunchuk

that buckler actually sounds prety viable, has sort of a batman feel to it I like that idea.
Strong electro-magnets might make a separating chain blade possible providing you can power them effectively without needing to carry a back pack full of heavy batteries, the downside might involve getting the blade stuck to yourself, your opponent or the environment.
The castlevania extending sword thrust is much more plausible if the sword is not truly flexible but acts more like the sword tip was a captive harpoon that could be fired forward using a blank round/gas charge but stays attached to the rest of the sword, once it reaches the limit of travel it hits a spring or similar recoil device which returns the blade back to its original position and chambers another round. Because the harpoon section can be built solid and to match the sword the qualities of a blade can be retained, might not be the best overall solution to all problems but being able to suddenly extend your thrust by a foot or so with enough force to pierce light armour would certainly be an advantage

The part about wrapping around another sword gets entirely summed up in the FE3H opening scene
When you were comparing chains, you said the smaller one would be less effective. Because when it wraps around you, only the tip hurts, and overall doesn't do much damage. I think that's the benefit of the "chains" being sharp blades, because when it wraps around your arm or torso it's slicing you up. A smaller chain like that is also less likely to stay wrapped around, since it doesn't have the big weight stopping it from unwrapping. But with blades, you would hope it would incapacitate your opponent when all the little edges dug into their skin (or parts of their armour). Not only would pulling it back cause more cuts around their body, but hopefully it could pull them off balance. So when you're comparing just a regular chain, the chain with the weight concentrated at the end is better; but if you actually had a whip sword, the effective part would be the actual blades instead of the chain itself. But all those points are still equally downsides, because any damage it can do to your opponent might end up happening to you... and since the entire length of the whip is bladed and much longer than a morningstar, you're probably in more danger wielding it than someone at range. Heck, even wrapping it around a close opponent might end with it going around them and flying right back at you uncontrollably.
im going to be honest I tried recreateing a whip sword myself any means necessary
I ended up with a whip sword but the segments didn't rotate they could extend because I used self retracting springs many many self retracting springs
in order for it to extend you had to swing it quite hard.

I did extensive two hour tests each day for a week before the springs just gave out and stopped retracting and just became literally just a bladed whip
in addition I will say that though it worked at extending and retracting cutting was a major fail for the first two days because id get the blades caught on the object via the space between the segments
it was better off cutting when it was retracted even then it would struggle
infact I made two one where the segments grooved up the other segments grooved down
o--- the second was better but again they both failed by the seventh day
it was a fun project but was not worth the time or the effort to do

There is also the flagrum. Sometimes called the Roman Scourge. A type of flog with whip like thongs coming of a handle intersected by flagellum (bladed/spiked bits of bronze or lead and sometimes nails). They would be used to absolutely shred back flesh in public acts of punishment and humiliation. I think these would be most similar to fantasy whip blades (rather than the urumi).

I already made a design for this, where the handle would pull extend and twist in order come together that was also spring assisted on the return, the blade pieces were made so they would force each other into the proper alignment each time. The problem I had was using a tethering material, as leather would stretch with use turns out metal cable does the same, Honestly I was more interested in Renji's Sword "Zabimaru" from Bleach - The reason why is it would be like a ribbon material connecting the pieces, but makes it impossible IRL to retract.
Weapon is total BS, but none the less is interesting.

Dean Natuno the Kusarigama is a sickle with a chain, how does that even compare to a whip-sword? That's like saying: Ball and Chain is like a whip sword. He even explained it in the video xD
*Dayvie,* I'm talking about the purpose of the Kusarigama. Instead of turning a sword into a whip and use it for slashing.
WHY NOT just use a Kusarigama and try to control the opponent's hand, neck, leg or weapon instead?
It's not that effective compared to a regular sword but it sure as hell a lot more effective than a "whip sword".

Things that wrap around don't actually tend to loose velocity, the inertia of the circular motion stays the same while the radius of the circle decreases. In fact, usually velocity increases.
