I saw Capt. Beefheart at the Troubadour in Hollywood CA, circa 1978. He verbally berated the sound guy because "it sounds like I'm coming through cotton." I have the performance on a cassette tape made on a stereo cassette recorder I hid inside a Wheaties box. Upon entry I was asked "what's up with the Wheaties box" and I told the guy it was snacks. He said "alright then, in ya go!"
He wasn't "freaking out" at all. I've seen a few singers freak out when they get a crappy monitor mix and this is actually a very tame reaction. Beefheart and his band might be putting unrealistic expectations on the studio's equipment going by the two mics taped together. Either way it's up to the sound guy to sort it out. Easy job when the gear is up to it. A nice monitor mix will massage any size singer ego.
@@gongbasher I always though the two mikes was because one was used for the band's mixer an PA and the other was for the people recording the gig so they could control the mike level for the recording, but could be wrong.
It may also be a technique pioneered by The Dead and later picked up by other artists, before the industry started adding the capability to all vocal mics. The mics are run 180 degrees out of phase and work to cancel out background noise.
Can you do that then@@vicente8705? Distort the image? I find copyright moronic. Allowing fans, of anything, to share what they have passion in allows that company to get to a wider audience and create a new generation of fans.
The Captain had his moods. He complained about microphone quality on other occasions as well. He did a poor acapella performance on the radio and complained that the microphone was "too small" - It was released as a short track called Black Snake Moan II on the Grow Fins Rarities Box Set.
My new band is going to be called 'The Captain Beefheart Microphone Freakout'. But we will not play a single CB song in our set. Just Hootie and the Blowfish covers.
you have to admit 'freaking out' isn't really all that accurate . that said, thanks for the upload. i enjoyed watching that. i'm no audiophile and i was curious to hear what CB thought was unacceptable
Is replacing the mic in its stand and calling the stagehand over to fix it, now, in 2024 considered "FREAKING OUT?" 🤔 What "woke snowflakes" YOU have become! 😮💨
Looked polite and civil enough to me. The man was a gentleman after all.
I’d hardly call it a freak out. He’s just telling the guy it’s not working.
that's what they call 'clickbait'
He quits in the middle of the song it’s most def a freak out.

we would love to hear the "cotton" clip if not the whole show!
You have an obligation to humanity to upload the set!
I want to hear the Wheaties Captain Beefheart bootleg
uhh sir/ma'am pretty PLEASE can you share the tape with us? by maybe recording it again digitally uploading to youtube?
Would love to hear it!
No freak out there, he barely got annoyed.
maybe he's freaking out because there is a picture of him from 20 years in the future behind him (yes..blue screen..etc)
At 0:35 he's either saying "I don't have any monitor" or "I don't have a pneumonia"...
After intensive research, I've found that he didn't have pneumonia at this time, so it's probably the latter.
@@ilikethisnamebetter keep up the good work!
Whoever called this a freakout never saw a fistfight on stage between Ray and Dave Davies
You got to see that ! I remember reading about their tour and their chaotic sets with the Davies’ brothers feuding . consider yourself privileged .

Never seen this. Thanks ❤
What a find, someone must have used a green screen to put a much older Don in the background, lol. Why?
I had to distort the video in order to get passed the copyright censors plus that’s a really funny photo of Don lol
@@vicente8705 Clever

he was right it sounded weak.. fix it and we'll continue

Well, it does feel rotten when you step up to sing and your mic doesn't cut it - pros can handle it, but personally I've lost it a few times!
Rotting in some new kinda cotton
@@idesofmarch1375with his throats sorin' and his low notes back n forgotten!
People get lulled into thinking Beefheart isn't an exacting and precise group of talented musicians. If one thing isn't right, none of it is right.
キャプテンビーフハートの動画を初めて見れました。ありがとう。
Boy gotta boogie!!
This is something you will never see with all those girls and boys who can't sing live and there are a lot of them.
Don’t mess with the captain 👊👊
I thought it sounded better when the mic didn't work and he walked away
Same thing happened at mother's in Chicago in the 70's. Wess reeves from the audience ran up and fixed it.
The problem there was that even two microphones was not enough.
Don Don Don Don Don rip 😢
lol that final shot

Wow
Mister zoot horn rollo...hit that long meaning note...and make it float.
I love it!
He liked it way too loud......sound guy probably didn't know what to do...🤔
So didn't freak out and just informed the stage crew the mic was faulty.
Oh, yeah! Total freak-out! Storms off stage! Oh... ok.
He didn't freak out. He just stopped performing because the microphone wasn't working properly, as any professional would do.
God bless the Captain!
he knew how to slow your machine right down!!
Zero freaking out in this video
IT WOULD PISS ME OFF TOO.
Its not like he was doing a cover version and he didn't seem to be giving the sound guy a hard time.Nice footage though😁😁😁.
I wouldn’t exactly call that a freak out.
The Freak, Freaks Out…
That hair though
What's he say " I can't hear " ?
Over exaggerative headline. He is just saying the mic don't work.
Potato Head Bobby was a friend of mine.
Was that in San Berdino?
Or Lancaster?
😅❤
Whoa, he really freaked out! I thought he was gone kill that guy and everyone within the tribe-state region! Whoa…
Freak out? Where? When?
Did he get shocked or something?
My God! I hope that roadie got some counselling!
Captain Beefheart looks like Fred Durst disguised as Captain Beefheart
pretty calm normal musician complaining about his mic. Quit click trolling.. side note... Down with the tyrant... Slava Ukraini! 🇨🇦🇺🇦
hey man!
coudl you upload the full video somewhere? it keeps getting taken down from yt
You can catch it here fb.watch/bukzF6nfE1/
