With digi moni enabled the radio finds colour code TG and ID , great for listening to commercial freq when you don’t know that information. Had this radio a couple of months now and is solid . Still using this radio in vfo mode and have never connected the radio to a pc as of yet.👍
HI Jason thanks for the review, just put my hands on one yesterday, one month used for 100$ CAN, That is the model with GPS. I am impressed by this radio so far, which is a the same as an Anytone but in a smaller package. Will get it programmed over the weekend. 73, VA2DG
While powered off, Hold down ( number 1 key + PTT key ) and turn radio on. When screen says "DJ-MD5 TEST MODE" let go of both keys and allow to boot. Turn CH selector on top of radio, and select (Mode 11) for full 400-520MHz 136-174 Turn off radio and now the radio will stay in that band Mode, go to your cps software, turn on your radio and read from the radio again and save your new codeplug with extended frequency coverage, and work with that codeplug from now on. The Btech 6X2 & Anytones D868, D878 can ALSO extend their frequency/bands too, as they are exactly the same insides. This DJ-MD5 is the best of the 4, because it is the only one with 200 mw power output for hotspots. *edit my bad, i forgot to mention you may have to redo some settings, re-add channels back into zones ect... after each mode change. :)
I have the AnyTone AT-D878UV and it's antena is exactly the same as the one you showed on Alinco DJ-MD5. Also both models are 95% identical. By the way if I am not wrong both radios are made by AnyTone.

That is not a standard 2 prong Kenwood connector. Alinco has to be special so they can make money on accessories I'm sure. The plugs are slightly closer together and I believe the mic and audio jacks are flipped. I knew the Alinco speaker mic jacks were proprietary because I have an Alinco DJ-500. I bought this radio one as soon as they were released as well as the Alinco speaker mic. The speaker mic is small and cheap feeling and the receive audio is not very good. It's low and tinny. I've not had any complaints on the speaker mic transmit audio. Not my favorite radio but it works.
I will have to check on the reversed audio/mic jacks, but this connector is NOT the narrow-prong ones that other models use, like the Connect Systems radios, etc. And this model is fashioned more after the Anytone DMR HT than it is the DJ-500 or previous Alinco models. But I will test this connection with a standard speaker-mic and see what I can find.
I didn't measure the distance between the plugs, I just know the Alinco is slightly closer together. The Alinco EMS-76 speaker mic fits the DJ-MD5 and the DJ-500.
I think the biggest issue for me with this radio is you can't swap between channel showing your programmed alphanumeric name and VFO. If you set a side key to the V/M function - it will show you your channel # with freq and swaps to vfo when pressed, but not your name for the channel but only if you switch it to frequency display to channel under "work mode". Now set work mode to "Channel" it'll show your alphanum name for your channels, have no A/B functionality, v/m will not bring up VFO. I understand that the channel no vfo is for part 90 but darn wouldn't it be nice to have VFO and your channel name since it's an amateur focused radio - give us a 3rd option under work mode - Channel, Frequency, and Channel/V/M where A and B show - a being VFO and B being your channel select.
That is not a Kenwood SPKR/MIC connector. It is different. I use Alinco DJ-500T/TB and Alinco DJ-MD5TGP radios and they use the same connector for SPKR/MIC; it's an Icom/Motorola type which I don't remember off of the top of my head. One of the advantages is that an ear bud can be plugged directly into the SPKR line without any issue.
I'll have to go back and look, but I believe it was the same as the Kenwood connector (the Kenwood style will also allow you to plug and earbud directly into the jack) My Kenwood D74 isn't even a "standard Kenwood" connector any longer. The "standard" one used, that used to be a Kenwood style, is now primarily a Wouxun/Baofeng connector.
@@HamRadio2 Yeah, we might be saying the same thing. Usually, when people are talking "Kenwood" connector these days, they mean the "Baofeng" connector. The Alinco DJ-MD5/TGP, Alinco DJ-500T/B, etc do not use the "Baofeng" type connector. The plugs are physically spaced differently and electrically wired differently. I have a lot of stuff with "Baofeng" connectors here but use primarily our Alinco radios day-to-day and they aren't the Kenwood/Baofeng connector. Please check it out and post back on it. At one point, I figured out what the connector was being called at MFJ because I wanted an aftermarket SPKR/MIC but I have forgotten what the connector type designation. I think it was being referred to by a "Motorola" designation and it fit a bunch of ICOMs. I know my old Motorola SPKR/MIC for the original Motorola Talkabout FRS radios works with the Alinco DJ-500T/B and DJ-MD5/TGP because that's what I use on the rare occasions I need one. (I seem to remember the designation as "Motorola M2" or "M1"; or perhaps it was an ICOM designation???)
After a quick search, I think it is this connector: S1 - Maxon, Standard, Icom, Cobra. www.planetheadset.com/Connectors/S1.php#connectors www.planetheadset.com/listen-only-earpiece.php#ShadowChart
My Alinco doesn't have BT. I think this is a firmware update that I need to do. But find a video about connecting BT to the Anytone 878+ radio. Basically these are the same radio.
Tried to put my speaker mic that works fine on a Baofeng but will not plug into my DJMD5. I contacted Remtronix and was told to only use the ALINCO EMS-76 otherwise it could void the warranty. The alnico speaker mic is expensive, but I got it and it plugs in just fine. Bottom line is that the Kenwood plug style doesn't work.
I am researching first Analog/DMR Radio purchase. Currently looking at the Anytone AT-D878UV and the Alinco DJ-MD5. What are your thoughts on the Anytone vs Alinco? Thanks RL
Basically they are the same radio. Get the one that you like better. The Anytone does have APRS and Bluetooth, but I am told those will soon be added to the Alinco, if they haven't been already.
If you look at this radio and the Anytone 878UV... It is almost the same! I would say it is the same inside. The big difference ist that the Anytone has APRS (Digital+Analog) and two more programable buttons plus a Mode what listens not only to all talkgroups - it will listen to both TS at the same time also. So If you want this radio with APRS (and some more features) - get the Anytone (right now the "Masterpiece" of a DMR-Radio). I'm very happy with my Anytone.
Jason, nice review. I've missed a few(dozen) nets. How are you hitting DFW metro and Texas Statewide through your Openspot? Also, can you include some extended video of the radio's audio. Thanks!
Need an update on DMR radios and or reviews, most all reviews out there are 1 or 2 years old. With DMR being the hottest thing in amateur radio I would think its time for new radio reviews, and if there's nothing new out there than the hype about DMR is all for not. Thank you
I don’t know if you follow comments after a week, but I bought a TYT MD-2017 after you first reviewed one. I’m interested if this Alinco is better than the TYT?
Ham Radio 2.0 thanks. I appreciate it. I like the TYT, but there are improvements that could be made. Thanks for the great knowledge resource. I’m still learning and it helps. 73 from K9BSC
About the Alinco, do you happen to know anything about the enhanced and AES encryption of this radio? I don't seems to be able to the enhanced encryption. If enable the normal encryption it work just fine, bit the moment I enable enhanced, encryption stop working. Not to mention AES... I can't even find where to enable it on the radio or the programming software. Any idea?
Hmm, I noticed a nasty hiss on your audio, check your gain staging or add a noise gate? I wouldn't mention it except obviously you pay attention to your audio 😃 Thanks for the look at this sweet radio!
You made this video in 2019. How do you still like this radio? I have the MD2017 but looking at this radio as well because of front panel programming. KG5RIZ
I have now had the radio about 48 hours. It has taken me about that long to figure out some of the radio features. It’s a little complicated to start but I will say the front panel programming on the go is nice to have and to be able to program some local repeater frequencies and be able to just change the talk groups from the panel is also a plus. I really like it plus the size is nice as well. Not as bulky and the MD 2017 I have. KG5RIZ
Does it worth it's money ? For instance TYT MD-UV380/390 DMR twice cheaper and also more protected (390) and uses Double Conversion Superheterodyne inside and bigger battery. What would you choose Alinco DJ-MD5 or TYT MD-UV380/390 DMR ? And another question does the Anytone AT-D878UV is the clone of this radio ?
Alinco has more features, like VFO and FPP. Also it holds more channels and contacts in memory. The UV380/390 is good, but yes, the Alinco is a better choice.
@@HamRadio2 Thank. But I will ask more. If you have a present of choice you don't pay for what would you choose Anytone D878UV Plus or this Alinco DJ-MD5E ?
Any idea where i can get programming software for a Quantun QP2100? I tried the connect system CS750 software and usb cable and get an error msg saying it isn't connecting... Thanks!
Hi Jason, first and foremost I wish you a very happy new year. Thank you for this DJ -MD5T superb review which was of great help. I have been scouting for a DMR radio and came across a couple of sellers of Alinco products in New Delhi and Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). I had a look and feel of this radio. The screen looks impressive but I feel it is a bit thick though. The sellers claim that it has inbuilt gps as well as APRS. However, I feel it may have only the digital Aprs and not the analog Aprs. These sellers have been claiming that this is made in Japan while all Alinco products are of Japan which I suspect. The radio is priced at around USD 140. I want to know do I have to also buy a separate node/Hotspot something to this DMR work? Kindly excuse me as I am new to DMR. Can you also suggest if it is still worth buying this radio or if there are better ones to opt for. Cheers & 73s
Yes I do recommend this radio. Yes you would need a hotspot to use it with DMR, UNLESS you have a DMR repeater near you, and then you can use it on the repeater to gain access to the DMR network.
@@HamRadio2 Thank you Jason for your prompt response. At my New Delhi QTH there is a repeater which is compatible to DMR. The repeater id is VU2HUB-R with state-of-the-art infrastructure privately run by two enterprising brothers. As I am new to DMR, does it mean that if I am in an area close to a digipeater I won't need a Hotspot? And if I am away then would I need to be connected via Hotspot? Also would like to know if the Hotspot comes as a separate device with tiny external antenna that can be carried just like a mobile and handy? Between the Anytone AT868UV and DJ-MD5(EGP), which DMR would you suggest? And lastly, is the Alinco DJ-MD5 (EGP) made in Japan? Apologies Jason, for loading you with my silly queries but honestly, I keenly follow all your videos and livestreaming from Dallas and always consider you as one of the few my go to man for ham radio knowledge. I am currently here at Bangalore and will be staying here for a month before I return to New Delhi. Thank you again and have a blessed day ahead. 73s
Jason i have read a few conflicting reviews of this radio, seeing that you have been using it can you tell me if it does a channel scan in DMR mode? I have read about the digi mon mode, does that work only if you are one a channel and not in scan? please tell me about the scan modes on this radio. Thanks
Jason I'll stick with just basic 2 m and 440 I get lost with that too complicated to go through all that I don't comprehend that well if you know what I mean 😂😂😂😂
I'm interested in getting my first DMR radio and narrowed it down to the the Alinco DJ-MD5TGP or AnyTone AT-D878UV W/GPS, are they the same radio? If not what is the difference between the two?
The CPS and Radio OS looks just like AnyTone. The Alinco looks to be too fat for my likes. I put the 2100mh battery on my 868 just to make it slimmer. I like the knobs on the Alinco better than the AnyTone. If I remember correctly the AnyTone does that back/delete thing too. I wish they would fix that. The first time I saw it I thought it was going to erase what I had programmed in. I guess the HD1 is the only one who is going to do a speaker mic like the Moto XPR. The usb connection is a good idea. I only have one programming cable for my radio and I can't tell you how many times I've left it at work only to get home, redo my code plug and have an oh dang it moment hahah With DMR being the fastest growing. I wish Kenwood would give us a DMR version of the D74. Question. When you talked about programming in one channel and using the list to call up other talkgroups. That would be ok on a hotspot but would that cause issues on a repeater? I know some repeaters like to keep local stuff on Slot2 while using Slot1 for other talkgroups. Good review
I personally like the larger batteries which provide more life between charges. I liked that the D878 came with a 3100 mah battery. Kenwood has said they won't be a DMR radio for Amateurs because they are afraid their commercial customers would buy it for commercial use, instead of their high-priced commercial DMR radios. I don't see how it would cause issues with a repeater to always use one channel because you can edit the RX and TX frequencies, as well as CC, TS and then activate a TG in the other menu. It would be more steps, but still doable.
@@HamRadio2 Thanks. I didn't know Kenwood made commercial DMR radios but yeah that would make sense why they don't fo them for Amateurs. HD1 IMO looks commercial grade and I like the way the speaker mic attaches. The only thing that stopped me from buy it was I hate the way the UI looks. If they change the UI on version 2. I'd probably be in for one. I was just wondering if you was on TS2 and went through the List and keyed up a TG that the repeater owner said to do on TS1 if that would cause problems if you didn't go in and change the TS. Have you heard any updates on the AnyTone mobile D578?
Hi all, I have the DJ-md5 & it's a great radio, but? My Kenwood SMC-34 mic does NOT work. I can get the mic in to the radio but it's a VERY tight fit. As soon as the mic is in the radio, the radio is in TX, that's without pressing the ptt. Anyone else come across this problem before. The baofeng programming cable fits in perfect but the radio rally does not like the Kenwood smc-34
I got the GPS model as well. The latest software version 1.10 is out but will not allow users to update firmware. Are you or any one else having the same problem?
Scan lists are for channels you want to scan within a zone. Edit: You may be able to have scan lists that have channels from different zones, I haven't tried this yet.
Hello, have this radio for now somes months. Not very satisfied. Its a copy of anytone AT-878UV but without somes features and with some problems. Bigger problem is battery life, 100% for hours and 100% to zero in few minutes. No support from Alinco, no updates. Really the Anytone version is better.
Thanks for the feedback, I haven't had these issues with the battery though. I'd reach out to the the authorized Alinco vendor you got the radio from and see if they can provide support.
Why didn't they use any green color in the display? Makes it looks almost black and white. Also the antenna is way too long. Cancels out the benefit of a smaller radio.
Having a problem --Did the firmware update and lost the Volume Bar on screen -- any idea of how to get it back --or what happened --anyone else have this problem ???
There is a way to toggle that off and on. However, I just looked through the CPS and the radio menu but was not able to find it. It is there and the firmware did not remove it; I just can't find it right now.
Really it is made for commercial use, especially since it is Part 90 accepted, where you might hand the radio to a different person ever day. 250 does seem like overkill though.
A 20 minute video about a radio that you spent maybe 8 minutes talking about. You can do better than this bro! I was looking for info about the radio, not a Hamfest 1400 miles away or an Anytone radio (which we already know this is much the same radio). Anyway, I watched the whole thing...
I love Alinco radios but not sure what they did with this one. The screen does not match the size of the radio. It’s like the actual lcd was an afterthought.

After a quick search, I think it is this connector: S1 - Maxon, Standard, Icom, Cobra.

I ust got the GPS version. I've noticed a bluetooth symbol on the display. Any idea what this is for?
Bluetooth headset and speakers.
Ok so you know the next question.. how do you connect them?
My Alinco doesn't have BT. I think this is a firmware update that I need to do. But find a video about connecting BT to the Anytone 878+ radio. Basically these are the same radio.
Do any of them have Bluetooth?
Ok, now we are talking. My other TH-cam ID is Got Ammo
Hello: Is there a location on the net to download part or all the DMR repeater information? I'm finding the code plugs are difficult to set up.
I am researching first Analog/DMR Radio purchase. Currently looking at the Anytone AT-D878UV and the Alinco DJ-MD5. What are your thoughts on the Anytone vs Alinco? Thanks RL
Please help me. Alinco vs anytone 878? Thank you.
Basically they are the same radio. Get the one that you like better. The Anytone does have APRS and Bluetooth, but I am told those will soon be added to the Alinco, if they haven't been already.
Is this one programmable from the front panel? Thats like the biggest selling points for me.
Yes, I demonstrate how to do that in the video.
@@HamRadio2
The specs matches Anytone 878, Gee you think?
Not exactly because it doesn't have APRS.
what software are you using to program Chirp does not list this radio as being able to program?
Chirp doesn't support any DMR Radios, last I checked. You need the Alinco software that is made for this model.
Jason I have this radio and it holds 150.000 contacts one fifty thou
Thanks. As I said in the video, that info was somewhat hard to find, and HRO lists it as 160,000
@@HamRadio2 yes sorry i was abit premature in answer i answered as i was watching then noticed you had found the answer Thanks for sharing the vid
Alinco
I really hope that they will include APRS. I don’t see a technical limitation, which would permit this??!!
In case you have missed it, I thing the newest firmware added aprs on the model with the GPS built in...
Jason, nice review. I've missed a few(dozen) nets. How are you hitting DFW metro and Texas Statewide through your Openspot? Also, can you include some extended video of the radio's audio. Thanks!
I use HBlink to connect any mmdvm hotspot to the cbridge.
I try to follow all comments on this channel. Yes I would say the Alinco is better than the MD2017, but I also still carry my MD2017 and like it.
Any idea?
Programming menu looks alot like the anytone 878uv, to bad it doesn't have a bigger battery.
Hmm, I noticed a nasty hiss on your audio, check your gain staging or add a noise gate? I wouldn't mention it except obviously you pay attention to your audio 😃 Thanks for the look at this sweet radio!
Sorry, not hearing that. Might be on your end.
@@HamRadio2 hearing it here as well
How’s the manual? Good video. I really like Alinco products, although this one as you said, maybe an Anyone clone, but priced competitively.
Right, likely made in China. I didn't really look through the manual much, but it looked like a normal Alinco-style manual.
I want to put My Call Sign in the Radio, do I put it where it's says Radio Id?
DMR Radios don't take callsigns
@@HamRadio2 My Ham Radio is a Alinco DJ-MD5, I just Put My Call Sign N2MJF in place of My Radio,
You made this video in 2019. How do you still like this radio? I have the MD2017 but looking at this radio as well because of front panel programming. KG5RIZ
Still love it. This one or the Anytone, which are really the same radio, are my favorite right now.
Thank you for the info. I purchased the radio and waiting for it to arrive.
@@truesightgrabber the Anytone because it also has bluetooth
@@HamRadio2 Thank you. My 4 days brainstorm of selecting my first DMR radio are over.

Jason i have read a few conflicting reviews of this radio, seeing that you have been using it can you tell me if it does a channel scan in DMR mode? I have read about the digi mon mode, does that work only if you are one a channel and not in scan? please tell me about the scan modes on this radio. Thanks
Thoughts after having it for 11 months? Also, I dont have a computer, can it be 100% front panel programmed?
Still loving it after all of this time.
Technically you can do FPP, but it would be a pain to do it with more than just a few channels.
@@HamRadio2 Thank you for the reply. I think I'm going to pick one up today.
@@HamRadio2 fyi not a Kenwood K1 plug. I tried the speaker/mic from my th-f6a and the pin spacing is different.
Because it’s DMR and you are DMR fan 😊
Yup! Very true. I'm going to be doing some Fusion and Allstar videos soon also
Jason I'll stick with just basic 2 m and 440 I get lost with that too complicated to go through all that I don't comprehend that well if you know what I mean 😂😂😂😂
You know it actually a Commercial HT that was Converted to a Ham HT,
@@HamRadio2 haha I am impressed... you can speak indonesian/bahasa...
Whats the best DRM radio for hams right now?
Alinco or Anytone?
Can you talk on GMRS?
I'm interested in getting my first DMR radio and narrowed it down to the the Alinco DJ-MD5TGP or AnyTone AT-D878UV W/GPS, are they the same radio? If not what is the difference between the two?
Identical its a Chinese clone, anytone, btech, radioditty. The alinco has a nice case.
I only have one programming cable for my radio and I can't tell you how many times I've left it at work only to get home, redo my code plug and have an oh dang it moment hahah
With DMR being the fastest growing.
Can anyone attest to how rugged this radio is?
Hi all, I have the DJ-md5 & it's a great radio, but?
My Kenwood SMC-34 mic does NOT work. I can get the mic in to the radio but it's a VERY tight fit. As soon as the mic is in the radio, the radio is in TX, that's without pressing the ptt.
Anyone else come across this problem before.
The baofeng programming cable fits in perfect but the radio rally does not like the Kenwood smc-34
THE RADIO LOOKS GOOD,, I WOULD LIKE TO CHECK IT OUT. 03-12-2019.
its dicey to program
I want to know how I introduced the frequency in number 144 / 440 in number . I don't hear nothing in the radio . WP3NK .
looks like the D878UV mate :)

What's the cost ?
It varies. About $150 at HRO
Can it be charged with USB?
No it has a desk charger
@@HamRadio2 Thanks, that's a shame. USB is convenient
I got the GPS model as well. The latest software version 1.10 is out but will not allow users to update firmware. Are you or any one else having the same problem?
I'm not able to do a firmware update either
If the firmware is not user upgradable, does Alinco have to do it? Did you contact Alinco about it and what did they say?
It has 250 zones and 250 scan lists. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two?
Not sure on the color. But the antenna is interchangeable, like on most radios.
@@HamRadio2 I know but I shouldn't have to buy another one.
Promiscuous mode? Does anyone know if radio has promisuous mode? Is it easy to go into this mode?
Yes. Its called digi mon and you either listen to 1 or both slots if you choose
This Radio Is Made in Japan, the Battery is made in China, when it's boots it says Alinco Japan,
This radio is made by Anytone for Alinco. Anytone is from China
Alinco... still made by Anytone
This one is, yep.
Someone tackle these people! Who needs 250 radio IDs? We are talking about your DMR ID right? One?!
Really it is made for commercial use, especially since it is Part 90 accepted, where you might hand the radio to a different person ever day. 250 does seem like overkill though.
I wonder if this radio is built in China like the dj500 is.....
This model is really made by Anytone, so yes...
so basicly an 878 but cheaper
Can I listen to police with it
Likely not
A 20 minute video about a radio that you spent maybe 8 minutes talking about. You can do better than this bro!
I was looking for info about the radio, not a Hamfest 1400 miles away or an Anytone radio (which we already know this is much the same radio). Anyway, I watched the whole thing...
This video is 2.5 years old and I've changed my format several times since then
I love Alinco radios but not sure what they did with this one. The screen does not match the size of the radio.
It’s like the actual lcd was an afterthought.
