    Taiko no Tatsujin, or Taiko Drum Master here in the West, is making a glorious return on both the Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4. A cute and colorful rhythm game that's developed a cult following. However, I bet you DIDN"T know that not only does Taiko no Tatsujin teach you how to play REAL taiko, but also teaches about some of Japan's most important festivals!

      I've been watching your videos for about 5 years now and just started playing taiko when I got to college last year, and I just gotta say this video was super awesome! It's great seeing some of your personal life and finding out you're a taiko player just adds a later to how cool you are! Keep up the great work!!

      I actually wasn't expecting much from this what with my experience with this game in arcades, but it was actually really enjoyable! As a former taiko player, I gotta ask what you thought about the differences between playing taiko ensemble here in the states versus playing in Japan? I occasionally played with Kokyo Taiko here in Nebraska, but their style came from a very traditional playstyle in Japan. Whereas my college team at LMU (Shin Kanarazu Daiko) were much more influenced by the jazz/improv traditions of Japanese Americans. What's your experience with it?

    • @TheAyanamiRei
      @TheAyanamiRei 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      To be fair, it's probably that the Resource Management helps to create a nice break from all the crazy action. That or because of the Home Design aspect.

    • @vc101
      @vc101 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I feel like the Home Design aspect and the Type system (and the platform on which it is played) are all that separate it from Bayonetta, gameplay-wise.

      I think he more means the games are reliant on things you have to collect. Like in Azur Lane you have to collect junk ships as EXP fodder and also manage your oil (also your stamina) and gold so you don't use too much to buy more things for level EXP.
      Whereas the resource collection in Honkai is very minor, and has a cute aesthetic to cover it (the chibi Sakura is SO cute xd)

  • @safnhuo

    That's a pretty crazy coincidence that you mention Taiko is learned not through sheet music but through sound. Because that is exactly how I learned to play western percussive instruments. I also have my own personal noises I make quietly to myself for every individual percussive technique, when planning out a rhythm or beat. That's how I memorize them. I eventually was taught how to read notes, but still don't use them that often. I've always wanted to learn how to play the various Taiko drums, and now this video makes me want to learn even more. It sounds like it's right up my alley.

    I need to get this game! I got to watch a taiko drumming class that took place in my school (I couldn't actually participate because I was in a play at the time). It looks like so much fun and I love music and I need to learn how to keep rhythm better. OH MY GOODNESS talking out the rhythms reminds me a lot of how our choir and band directors would talk out rhythms that were difficult and that was also one of the main ways we learned rhythm to start with. We used Ta and Ti though. Like... it's so cool how cultures intertwine like that. :D

    I’m also a big fan of Taiko no Tatsujin. I started playing this in Japan when I was 16 which is also the time I started learning Japanese. I began playing on normal mode before advancing myself to hard mode which is my difficulty. I have 3 games, 2 from the DS and the latest in Switch.
    I never knew you started as a member of a Taiko drummer which is really interesting. It’s true that the game is quite easy if you know how the rhythm goes. A good number of people mentioned that this is like Donkey Kong Konga except the drum sticks. It’s a little similar between the two, but this one is really focused to the Japanese culture

    I actually remember getting this game a long time ago with the drum and everything...it was fun even though the US version had US songs but it was a fun game and pretty simple. I saw some live Taiko when I went to Japanfest one year which is a cultural festival in my state for Japan..it's pretty awesome. Also I knew about the mochi pounding thing some time ago but not from this but another game which GG has covered before...Okami. I loved the interaction between the Rabbit Celestial Brush Spirit and Okami-Amaterasu. She starts out helping and everything looks peaceful...then the rabbit notices she's drooling while looking at the big blob of mochi and tries to smash her with the hammer.

    Wow, you have officially gotten me more interested in what Japan's culture has to offer AND you're making me want to get the switch. I wonder if I can buy mochi from where I am... I've never actually tried it before.

    Oh Dude I completely understand. At one of my favorite conventions, the AnimagiC, an Anime and Manga Convention here in Germany, if not even THE biggest Anime and Manga Con in Germany, there is usually a Taiko Group and I listened to them and it was marvellous. I just listened to it, playing it must be a whole different level of amazing.

    Can we please actually get an extended version where you mention every little aspect of the culture from this game? I would actually love that

    My only experience with Taiko is from Osu!Taiko and a brief moment when I was in Epcot in Disney World (see next paragraph), and its one of my absolute favorite games ever. Its a super super simple mechanic of hit the keys according to the color face you see at the right time in rhythm with the music, but it gets SOOO complicated and you have to ramp your dexterity up FAST if you want to play harder maps. I just recently ordered the game for PS2 with the drum and sticks and I'm having a ton of fun between the game of the console and plugging it into my PC to play my Osu! maps with it.
    When I went to Disney World over Winter break 2018-2019, Japan Epcot had live Taiko drummers every 30-60 minutes, and in the shop there was a woman who played a Shime daiko at a live pearl clam opening booth every time someone bought and opened a clam. I asked if it was the real deal and she was surprised to hear anyone talk about it and instantly got excited about it as, come to find out, she really really really loved Taiko. She asked if I would like to learn some basics and I couldn't have been any happier in that exact moment to say yes and run around the counter to her side. She taught me the singing of Don Ka for, if I remember correctly, Don Ka DoKo KaKa DoKo KaKa Don Ka. It was so fun to be playing a real Taiko drum after playing an extremely simplified version on Osu! for so long. There were tons of people recording the event on their phones and whatnot. It was definitely an experience I won't forget and never want to ever.

    Good video. I drum in a batucada samba band but I wish I could join a local taiko group too! The rhythms are really cool.

    This video led to me looking more into Obon. As I researched, I was also doing a Spanish assignment to compare Día de los Muertos and Halloween, which caused me to compare those (and Samhain) to Obon. I had a lot of fun comparing these. While I looked into it more, I stumbled across someone who mentioned telling stories about Yurei during Obon. What are your thoughts on this?

    Man I remember playing Taiko no Tatsujin when I lived in Japan! The many times my boys and girls club when off base (which was like 4 times even 5 times a month or whenever the heck my family felt like it) and wed stop at arcades. I miss those times.

    This was quite a good, entertaining, and informative video. Good job! Also, if you wanted to cover any more lesser known games in the future, I don't think any of us would complain. Keep being an awesome teacher :D

    I think I saw a Taiko Drum presentation at Epcot one time. I'm going to have to check my tape archive to see if I recorded it.
