    I'm a 14 year old gardener and your videos help me out a lot I've been gardening for 2 years now and one thing that I wanna share is that swiss chard is just as good eaten raw I just eat it with ranch and eat it like carrots I prefer the stocks of swiss chard over celery but thank you for the videos keep up the good work

      +Mark Lockit I'm 53 and just recently learned this, as I've always eaten Swiss Chard steamed or sautéed... My sister-in-law uses the greens in salads, so I tried it myself and it was delicious! I just substituted Swiss Chard for Spinach salad recipes... You're a wise young man, and the best part about gardening, is you continue to learn new things and teach others over a lifetime..

      Thank you for this comment. Really good to know. I have chilli plants in pots that I have been over wintering in my greenhouse for 3 years now. Ghosts, Habaneros, Jalapeños, Lemon Drops & Purple Tiger so will do the same with the Swiss chard.

    Great Video,I do all container gardening here in South Florida, and your videos have been excellent tutorials.. I am growing Bright Lights and Ruby Red Chard.. When people see my garden it is the first thing they notice, because the plants are beautiful and colourful.. Most people have no idea what it is or how delicious it tastes until I give them some.. I have 4 friends now growing Chard in containers.. You Eggplant and Zucchini container videos were also very helpful.. Thank you for posting them.

      +Robert Ciulla Thank you! Nice to know the videos helped you. Yes Swiss Chard are amazing looking plants. You are absolutely right about people not realizing how delicious Swiss Chard is. I have had very positive responses when people taste Swiss Chard for the first time :) Happy Gardening!

    I have had good luck with growing Swiss Chard 'Bright Lights' in "Grow Boxes", they are in 2 parts, you fill the lower resivour with water, then place the other container on top & fill with a good mix (like Miracle grow, etc). It wicks up the water as needed. My chard is 2 years old!! It has started to bolt due to an unseasonably warm period. These boxes are on the edge of my patio. I have gotten so much from this chard, from soups, smoothies, salads, stir fry. I will top off the soil with compost & interplant with more seeds, & actually have sweetpea flower vines climbing on one edge with wire support!!

    • @ekeanorroberts823

      +YVRSURF Mine get about 6 hours direct sun, off the patio, but can also be in direct sun. I now have to plant more, as mine are bolted.

    I wanted to pass along how I did with your suggestion regarding trying Ruby Red variety Swiss Chard... I couldn't believe how large, attractive, and prolific these plants were.. I've grown several other varieties, but Ruby Red was by far the best.. I grew them in plastic half-barrels I bought at LOWES, and was able to grow 5 plants per barrel.. I had no issues with blight, disease, nor pests.. Even those little White Fly Devils left them alone.. Very easy to maintain.. I just gave them high nitrogen fertilizer after picking outer leaves.. Thanks for your recommendation..

    Have you tried making Patra with the leaves? I used them instead of Colocasia or Taro Leaves and they are delicious! I have about 9 plants and my family loves it!
    Thanks!

      Patra is a personal favorite as well. I'll try adding it to dhals as I like the taste of spinach in dhals. I'll have to try your lentils recipe as well! Thanks for the tip!

    Can I use bonemeal for Swiss chards? Also is 20-20-20 NPK is good for Swiss chards?

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can, however a balanced fertilizer like 20-20-20 is better for Swiss Chard as its mostly leafy greens

    Does this apply to rainbow chard also?

  • @Darkfalz79
    @Darkfalz79 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I grew perpetual spinach last year - tried to grow some other chards too but they never got very big (bed was choked with tree roots). I am starting again this year (rainbow chard). Interestingly I discovered that the perpetual spinach was about 20 plants - I took the two smallest and re-planted this year, I hope that despite it being a bi-annual, these were so small they don't go to flower this year.
    I have five rainbow seedlings ready to go out, I hope they are different colours.

      @CaliforniaGardening  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Darkfalz79 Rainbow chards are amazing, I have grown them and got success every time. In SoCal weather they can grow easily for two years. Most of the time the plants had to be removed only because they were infested with aphids to a point beyond getting rid of them. Keep growing!!

    • @Darkfalz79
      @Darkfalz79 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +California Gardening I've just realised my "beetroot" is actually swiss chard (looks identical to your ruby red). I pulled out the wrong plants! Another failure to label properly mistake. Ah well, I guess I'll eat them as I have more growing now in another area. Or I could transplant one.

    A question when you have the time to respond..I am in South Florida, and started some Ruby Red Chard seeds... I have searched the Net for growing tips as well as your helpful video... I got a lot of info, but the one issue I couldn't find much on was thinning... The seeds seem to be a mini cluster of 3 or 4 seeds stuck together as one.. I planted seeds, 1 per small Styrofoam cup... Each cup has 4-6 3 inch stalks which have sprouted... Should I leave them to grow as one cluster, or by thinning, should I trim these seedlings down to 1 stalk?

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Ciulla Thank you, glad you like the videos. You may separate the four stalks carefully and grow them as separate plants. That will give you maximum sized leaves. Good luck!

    Okay I'm dumb af. The little seedling plant I bought from the grocery store said to plant each plant 4 inches apart... i thought that meant to break apart each chard and space it out...

    I don't even know where to start...Did you start with just 3 seeds? The plants in this video is already grown. How did you even start from the beginning?Just planted directly in that pot? Did you mix the soil with fertilizer then? As you can see, I know absolutely nothing about gardening...
