In today's lesson we are going to learn how to play "Plug In Baby" by one of modern rock's greatest bands, Muse.
Guitarist Matthew Bellamy opens up "Plug In Baby" with a riff which Total Guitar magazine readers voted as the #1 ultimate guitar riff of the 2000s.
In this Plug In Baby guitar lesson video we will learn that riff, which is quite long, as well the main chords used during the chorus. Those are actually the only two real guitar parts in the whole song.
The killer opening guitar riff is played multiple times throughout the song and is quite unique. It contains certain patterns or sequences within it that, as soon as you understand them, make learning the whole riff much easier. In this video lesson, while I am demonstrating this riff, I will show you how to see those patterns so you can memorize everything much faster.
On a technical level I would put "Plug In Baby" at about an intermediate level. That main riff certainly does move around quite a bit, especially after the band joins in. You will have to rapidly pick across strings, alternate pick through a few ascending picking sequences and throw a couple half step bends in there as well.
What is really cool though is that after you have the riff under your fingers you will find that it fits the rhythm underneath perfectly. It just simply grooves. Once you lock into this groove you simply won't want to stop practicing this hypnotic riff. So don't get bogged down with all the notes there are to learn. It will be well worth the effort when you are done.
As for the chorus, we have just a few repetitive power chords to play through, no big deal. Most of your efforts will be learning the main riff.
Muse is certainly not only one of the most successful modern rock bands, but also one of the most creative. Their style is a unique combination of everything from Queen to Metallica to dare I say it, Rachmaninoff.
So if your looking for a great song to learn with epic and challenging riffs I don't think you can do much better these days than "Plug In Baby".
Have Fun!
Carl...
Having trouble playing this song? Matthew Bellamy can play it while running. Has that helped your morale?
Sam Vimes While running AND jumping.
While running and jumping is nothing... You guys never saw him playing it while spinning around and behind his head without missing a beat?
But Matt Bellamy is not human!!
Puts things into perspective thats for sure. lol
You puny mortals. He’s obviously SCP 079 that hacked into a robot and created its own human camouflage!
coming back to a video that i already attempted and failed as a naive beginner and getting that hang of it almost straight away is a great feeling
Exactly what happened to me too
I’m that naive beginner 😇
One of the best feelings as a guitar player
I love that feeling 😅
why am i here i dont even have an electric guitar
Emma Vazquez Peasant
Me :,(
This song is a good reason to take one, don't you think?
same lmao
f
Deserves mo views. He's fast and straight to the point than others
I'm half filo and you're name sounds like too, so is that a "mo" as "you" or "mo" as in "more" but in a slang way?
lol nvm, didn't realise I just replied to an almost a decade comment 🤦🏽
I’m 8 I asked for an electric guitar for Christmas that’s why I’m here
Edit: also I love muse
Damn for an 8 year old your spelling is amazing (better than most ppl who are older) and you have an awesome taste in music!
IIaestheticxII rock on bro
Hope its going well bro
rock on little dude
Your best decision ever
PLEASE do more Muse!! :D Your lessons are soo great! I would really like a lesson on New Born, MK Ultra, Micro Cuts and Thoughts of a Dying Atheist
started learning guitar in lockdown 2020, but my music taste has completely changed since then. my mum also gave me her old electric guitar (which just so happens to be the exact one used in the video lmao) since she doesn’t play anymore.
muse quickly became one of my favourite artists, and i’m now trying to learn my favourite songs. i can play new born and feeling good on piano, so i thought i’d give guitar a go… and this is my favourite song so wish me luck!!!
muse is fucking awesome, glad you found them!!
Hahaaaaaaa I am not skilled enough. I’ve been playing for like a week now haha. One day though. One day I’ll play this killer riff
I have been playing just a freeking month and Im trying yo play this
did you play this killer riff
4:21 if your having tricky with this part try going from your first finger on B then middle finger to G and then your first finger to the D so your kind of walking your 1st and middle finger up the one fret. That’s how I do it.
I just barre that shit with my index finger

+ GuitarLessons365Song Can you please do a lesson of Muse "Survival" I promise that this song won't disappoint. Its a masterpiece. I suggest listening to prelude first because both prelude and survival connect. So if you have the time to do it that would would be awesome. And I'm only asking because your the best teacher on TH-cam:)
if u listen on .5 speed he sounds drunk
If you play it at 2x he sounds fast
Maxwell Cunningham LooL
😂😂😂
You don’t say?
Lmao why did this make me laugh so hard
I learned to play this song only downpicking...now I gotta do alternate picking fml
For me alt picking this song is way easier than downpicking
@@macdadydoo569 for me it's the fretting thats the hardest
@@londonwatson7342 fretting is super simple on this song. Its almost repetive with the finger movements.
@@macdadydoo569 way to be a cockhead to learning guitarists
Matt himself down picks, i think you're good unless you wanna practice alternate
Oh my GOSSHHH PLEASE PLEASE MAKE A LESSON ON THE GROOVE!!! PLEEASE
thanx carl, great lesson as always. matthew bellamy is a pretty amazing guitarist, too bad the newer muse stuff doesn't rock like the old muse. origins of symmetry and absolution were both amazing albums....
Drones is awesome :)! And awesome live too :)
+JJ Lille yeah ill check drones out, they kind of lost me with the resistance, that album had no balls aside from like 2 or 3 songs, which is fine but i like the muse that rocks! absolution is my favorite muse album by a mile, even the soft stuff on that album is amazing! stockholm syndrome is one of the most original and brilliant rock songs of the last 20 years in rock!
i love all their albums including the new ones. i guess u haven’t heard thought contagion, blockades, reapers, defector, etc.
Im a bass player but this is awesome, idc is a guitar riff, imma learn it on bass lol
I'm a guitar player, but I learned hysteria's bassline because why not
Here because of the Trash Taste episode about Music 🙏
I just realized the chorus is a copy of Bodies from Smashing Pumpkins! Wow... Love both songs, but didn't pay attention to the chorus in Plug in Baby.
On Pumpkins side it's core riff of the whole song, and they play it in drop C# (drop D + half step down) - so one can play the power cord easy with a single finger staying on the top 3 strings, and go 3, 7, 2 to play what would normally be G, B, F#, instead of the B power cord with root on A string. Also the drop allows the switch to 2, 0, 5 reaching the low D (or rather C#) power cord which isn't possible otherwise.
The songs are much different though, and that guitar part in Plug in Baby isn't as core to the song as the one in Bodies - in the former the guitar disappears in the mix with other instruments and voice being quite loud so it's not that obvious that it's practically a plagiarism (even down to the rhythm if I'm not mistaken).
I've been watching for five years!!! Your the greatest teacher in the WORLD! I owe you a lot of money, can I pay you with crypto?
hey carl! good job! whats the picking pattern for this song, i cant seem to get my picking up in speed. keep up the great work!
I'm sure you can do it however but I just do down picking and it works great for me
Are u a beginner? Because if u r that means your pretty much slow
I haven't attempted this song yet, but usually down-up-down-up picking us the best way to go! That goes for most songs actually.
It's alternate picking.
solid riff
That rise of your eye brows on 35 seconds in lets us all know this is not as simple as it looks at first! Oh well here goes. : )
Thank you for this tutorial. I learned to play this years ago and totally forgot how to play it. Now I want to re-learn the tune your guidance has helped me pick the tune quickly. Often, if I’m struggling to play a tune by ear this channel a first search for me. THANKS :0)
i tried learning this about 4 months ago, immediately gave up, and i learned it today with ease
You are amazing. You can’t imagine how much this helped me. This is the best plug in baby tutorial on youtube! Thank you.
the oral cigarette - kizukeyo baby
Great video as always. Keep it up! Just something I would add though, if you play it in drop d tuning you can play during the verse. What you do is set your guitar to drop d and then play the 6th 5th and 4th strings on the 5th fret, then play the same strings open, and then 4th fret and repeat. The drop d tuning also makes it much easier to play one really weird chord just before the chorus hits.
Thats just if you dont have a band and are playing by yourself. Great video!

Nice, personally I don't use the pinky on the 2nd note, seems more easy & smooth.
Thank you for this. How could I play the verses ? :)
Amazing lesson Carl, thank you!
Another Muse song that's for some reason ignored on TH-cam is Falling away with you, it's an amazing fingerstyle tune and I would love a lesson on that!
do the day that never comes, please
Hi! Thanks for the tutorial. I wanted to ask you what pedal are you using for distortion? Greetings from Chile!
The speed of this is the problem for me especially the sweep picking part
Thanks Carl, great lesson as always
I'm following Grant's footsteps
Was it succesful?
Doesn't he use a whammy bar or fuzz factory
le cambrioleur He doesn't have those.
Yes, Matthew uses a Fuzz Factory
Tiago Trindade Actually the Fuzz Factory is already inside his guitar, the phaser Mxr 90 too
Thank you real man! I understand all Parts !
