Color #8 is my favorite Grant Stone Boot (Edward). I think it’s dressy enough with the black welt and stained midsole to be worn with a navy suit but also can be dressed down. The Color 8 color develops beautiful highs and lows.
Took the words out of my mouth. Have the edwards in color 8 and love them...the simplicity makes them dressier than the diesels imo but they also work well with jeans. Vaguely remember my diesels coming with leather laces and the Edward's came with round black which supports the look. Both are great boots but i give the Edward's a slight edge.
I am continually amazed at the ability amazed at GS’s ability to keep such a wide variety of boots, leathers, and sizes in stock while maintaining extremely high quality. The PNW builders could learn a few things.
Just to clarify, the boots are not strictly a 6 inch height. The shaft height ranges from 5-ish in to 6-ish inches I believe. So it depends on what size you get, but essentially the shaft height increases with size for the sake of proportionality. I’m not sure what the height would be with the consideration of the heel as well
Really like the simplicity of the Edward - and am glad you explained the difference between models, because I was thinking my next GS would be a diesel and you have helped me make a better choice for myself. Thanks..
I don't have any Grant Stones yet, so I appreciate your comparison and found it very interesting. I've been unable to decide which model I want between the Diesel, Edward, Cap Toe, and now the Garrison also.
My favorite of their designs is the Ottawa boot, which is basically a Diesel without the moc toe which makes it a bit more balanced. But if I wanted a plain toe I think the Edward looks cleaner overall with the lack of the extra heel seams.
I totally agree! I think the Edward's simple or clean design really tends more in the dress boot so I de, but so far I didn't see the boot in a leather that makes it justice. I really would like Grand Stone could make the Edward in less exotic leathers or more like dressy type: calf, Cordovan would be awesome, and some curve balls like natural cromaxel, minerva, and maybe Kangaroo? (only because I think they will look interesting and fashionable), and maybe more option on leather soles. Thank you for the video.
Great video, I got the black waxed Edward commander and I really like the loot. I'm not sure I would use it as a dress boot but I do like that it looks less light work boot so I can fit it in casual to business casual clothing. This gives a little more versatility because I can also use the tougher material as a travel boot if I randomly need to do some hiking, lol.
You need to review an Ottawa mate. It's their best and most underappreciated design , but it really is a lovely proportionate boot with just the right amount of details.
Really enjoyed this comparison and, having multiple pairs of both models myself , I think it was a great topic to discuss. Answers my wife’s question about these anyway 😅. Well done. Currently I’m trying to figure out the differences in the Caswell models. Please consider solving this great puzzle.
Exactly why I don’t understand the Edward. And returned them. It’s a dressier boot with more casual leather choices. Makes no since to me. Though I do love my black cxl diesel boots. The Leo last fits me perfectly.
I hopped on Grant Stones recent sale, purchasing the Diesel Earth for a boot I can potentially rough up a bit, and the Diesel Saddle Tan for my first leather sole boot, to keep looking a bit nicer on fairer surfaces. I’ve appreciated your reviews a great deal in making these choices!
That’s a really good point that the Edward feels out of place a bit. Cleaner look doesn’t match casual and exotic leathers, while also not differentiating from the Diesel very much. I still like the way the Loden suede version looks a lot though.
Couldn’t agree more with the confusing leather choices on the Edward. I think some calf leather options would be awesome (especially since they don’t use it on too many of their boots).
I have a pair of Diesels that I’ve had for like 4 years. It’s seriously unbelievable that they are made in China. Goes to show that if you implement the right standards you can get good to excellent quality made in China.
I like the Edward better, at least based on this video. It has a much more classic vibe to me. I also really like that waxed rough out on that particular example.
I own both pairs. I can say the Edward has a tighter instep compare to diesel. I tried to break-in my Edward for a month and it still hurt the top of my foot the instep. The diesel, i have no problem fits perfectly. Can wear it all day.
Well since you’re asking,I prefer the diesel because I can see the details on that boot ,compared to the Edward, where all I can see is the dark colored leather.
Personally I think the more plain aesthetic of the Edward makes more room for the leather's character to show through. This might reflect in their choice of more rugged leathers than will show off their character when they've been beaten up a bit.
What is everyone's thoughts on the new garrisons in bronze rough suede? I keep coming back to this (kicking myself that I didnt get the trumans upland in a similar leather, albeit darker) but hesitant to pull the trigger as I am not sure how versatile/what I would wear them with. Maybe just casual.
Hi Teik! I really appreciated this video! I have been following your channel for a few months and your videos have taught me so much during my journey into high-quality footwear. I had a question about Dainite-style soles and hope this is an OK place for it. So far, my only goodyear-welt footwear is a handful of pairs of Thursdays. I plan to get more Thursdays, but the next brands I try will definitely be Grant Stone and Parkhurst. I have seen you and other folks in the boot community compare the hardness of the proprietary studded soles from Thursday, Grant Stone, and Parkhurst to the original Dainite, generally concluding that all three are softer than Dainite. However, I haven’t seen much comparison between these three proprietary soles, so I was curious what your thoughts are given that you have makeups with all three? I don’t have any boots with real Dainite yet, so my only point of reference is the Thursday sole. I find it fairly hard underfoot and I want to avoid curating a collection that is dominated by soles as hard as those. Accordingly, I’m trying to keep my sole types diverse as my collection grows, adding in leather soles, wedge soles, softer lug soles, and whatnot. But due to the popularity of Dainite, many Grant Stone and Parkhurst makeups I am heavily considering are only offered with the studded sole, hence my inquiry. Hope you are well and sorry for the huge block of text!
Are you asking which ones are hardest? IMO from soft to hard it’s Thursday, Grant Stone, Parkhurst, Dainite - but not so much as you’d notice. Maybe if used a Durometer. Also, two points to consider. 1. “Softness” under foot is camouflaged by what else is there, leather midsole, poron, sock liner…. 2. Softer outsoles wear out faster.
Planning to get my first GS boots, I really like how they play with the contrast vibes in Edward, sleeker looks but come with rugged leather option likes Dark Oak Roughout or Waxed Tobacco. BTW when you mention the quarter in Edward is larger than diesel, does that also mean when you pull/tight the laces, the wings of the boots where the eyelets are place will come together closer than Diesel? I saw a lot of photo/reviews (include your reviews), when pull/tight the laces, the Diesel has a nice space between each side of the boots meanwhile Edward has a closer gap and tinier space. Thanks!
yes, the Edward has less space between the laces than the Diesel when laced up. Just another nod to the "dressier" design of the Edward despite the unusual leather choices. I agree with Teik that it is very odd and a little confusing!
Same size in both and the Diesels are noticeably larger visually and on my feet. The soles on my Diesels are more comfortable though, for whatever reason. Ha, the rabbit hole we go down
Do you know how they keep the heel counter on the Edwards in place? I don't see any stitching around them. Great video by the way, I've been wondering about these two for some time.
Really torn between the Diesel/Edward and the Parkhurst Allen. I have a wider foot (10.5e) at the ball of the foot and the pinky. Would you say the the 602 is an inherently wider last than the Leo last? Have you tried the 602m last?
Some people have been complaining about the tongue of the new Garrison boot wandering so I figure this is also potentially common with the edwards boot, at least with some people. @@Bootlosophy
@@patrickmiao1698 many of my ungusseted tongues slip to one side and this does too but not to a great degree. I think the way GS line their tongues help.
@Bootlosophy definitely. I find myself enjoying the Dark Oak Roughout Edward with medium merino wool socks. Speaking of which, do you intend to review boot socks? I have not seen anyone touching this topic at all.

I completely agree - a dressier Edward model would be just the thing for business wear in Fall and Winter. Hope GS takes note.
Thanks!

I think the tightness is because of the larger quarters. They meet closer at the lace facings, so more leather on the instep.

Did you see grant stone just released a new Edward boot in dark walnut chromexcel ? Color look smooth and nice
Yeah, damn! I’d just put my wallet away for the year and then got the email.
@Bootlosophy I said enough is enough hen saw those and said wow they look good. I wonder if they will make it for the Diesel also.
Personally I think the more plain aesthetic of the Edward makes more room for the leather's character to show through. This might reflect in their choice of more rugged leathers than will show off their character when they've been beaten up a bit.
Hey Tek, the Diesel also comes in a 360 storm welt whereas the Edward has a 360 flat welt construction.
GS varies the welts with their different uppers on both models, for example the Diesel Tan Essex is a flat welt. So cool!

Grant stone is horrible for loose grain. Ive had 2 pair of diesel boots both with horrible loose grain right in the vamp
Interesting, I have 12 pairs and only one has loose grain high up the shaft. That’s why they call it a lottery
Another thought - don’t get confused between loose grain and the natural crease/break of some leathers like Essex and Vegas Tan
