    Great clip. I like how you have spent effort on sound and lighting ... best instructional material I have seen on XV builds. Thanks. Also good to see how you have addressed the upper lugs for the rear suspension. I was going to do that but found here in New Zealand the licensing would require a stringent recertification if the frame is altrered. It will be cheaper for me to install a 15" strut, rather than the YZ unit I bought for the job. Thanks again. Great resource for an amateur home builder like me.

      David MacGregor Thanks David. Although the voice over sound in this video is absolutely not the best. I recorded it in the wrong surrounding and never got it right after. I guess it's ok enough. We have the licencing here in Holland to. But I won't bring it to the government service after the rebuilt and take my chance. I'll just ride it with XV 750 Virago on paper.

    So what was the actual reason for “rebuilding“ the engine? Did you want to just clean it or did you want to go for a Performance upgrade ?

    • @chiefpepdesign
      @chiefpepdesign  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HerrCrazyMe Three reasons actually. First is for the Wetblasting (see previous video's). They won't accept a complete engine and the result wouldn't be as good. Second the painting of the cylinders. Third indeed the cleaning, inspection and/or revision of parts.

    Hi Chief, I installed the cylinders and the cylinder head and I noticed, after tightening them, that there is an air gap between the two, is this normal? Thank you

    • @chiefpepdesign

      Did you ad the gaskets? And did you tighten the nuts in a cross patern constantly?

      @@chiefpepdesign Thanks for your reply, yes, I followed the procedure as per the manual, I installed new gaskets, the strange thing is that this problem is in both cylinders, at the sides (in correspondence of the spark plug) they appear to be slightly raised by about 2mm. What do you advise me to do? What can be the problem.
      Sorry for the English, I am writing from Italy.

    Chiefpep as always great video. I am fallowing your series as I am also in the middle of xv920 café racer build. I have to pull the front cylinder apart as it is dripping oil into exhaust. One thing I notice, which is odd, is that the oil buffel is on the rear cylinder sproket and not on the front one. I guess someone must have done some work to it already. I checked the valve seals and they were fine, so I assume piston rings, right? Thank.

    • @chiefpepdesign
      @chiefpepdesign  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Woodworks, thanks for your reply. It doesn't really matter where the oilbaffle sits. In the instructionmanual it says the front, but you can also mount it on the rear. I used to have it on the rear for a short period on my Scrambler, don't really know why. But, to be sure, you better put it on the front cylinder. Yeah, if the exhaust gets oil, it could be your oilscrape piston ring, but, it can be many things. Check the seals of your valves aswell and if they really close and seal if they are closed (pressure test?!). The oil should burn if you have good firing in your cylinders. This depends on many things (even your sparkplugs). If you take off the cylinder, mind as well do the whole lot so make sure everything is all good when you put it back together. Good luck and luckily you now have handy instruction video's here ;) I'm going to continu my editing now for the next video ;)

    Did you hone to cylinder when you rebuilt the engine, or just replaced new rings on the piston?

    • @chiefpepdesign
      @chiefpepdesign  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only replaced the rings. The cylinders were in extremely good condition

    Are you sure the oil baffle goes on the rear? Another site shows it on the front.

    • @chiefpepdesign
      @chiefpepdesign  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Fluckiger it doesn't really matter. The instruction manual says rear. Which makes sense because the overflow tube should go straight in the frame where it has drain pipes on the bottom. These are all just behind the rear cylinder.

      Chiefpep yes I did thanks , could you give me the number of the oil baffle from the diagram as I can’t see it sorry . Yamaha discontinued oil baffles 2003 so out local Yamaha dealer told me . Great videos by the way very helpful . Is it absolutely necessary to have one on rear cylinder ??

    • @chiefpepdesign
      @chiefpepdesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@soulpower3107 Actually, it should be on the front... I know I had it on the rear before. This is due to the shorter hose you need then. But it should be on the front cylinder (called cylinder 2). I swapped it eventually. I am not sure if it really, really should be there. But since the hole is pretty big with a big hose, I guess some fumes and spoilage goes there ones in a while. So better be safe then sorry. Here is the number: product number: 20X1111H00

    Is there no gasket for the top ends of cylinders

    • @chiefpepdesign
      @chiefpepdesign  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Fluckiger yes there is. There was a cut in this part and that's why you don't see me adding it. Sharp of you noticing it.

      Ah dammit. For some reason my gasket kit only came with the bottom ones. If they don’t sell those which I doubt they sell just those. Do you think liquid gasket will suffice? I’m finally getting back to this. It took the cycle shop 3 weeks to put the valve springs in my heads 😡

    • @chiefpepdesign
      @chiefpepdesign  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Fluckiger why didn't you do this yourself? Yes, liquid gasket could work. Make sure you connect all the ends and there is no open piece anywhere.

      I just didn’t want to mess with it and it seemed important to make sure it was done right. They told me it would take a day or two. If I would have known they were going to blow me off for weeks I would have done it. I hate mechanics. I’ve never had a good one. I’m annoyed me $100 gasket set didn’t come with two of the most important gaskets. Anyway. Thanks for your help. I’m thankful for your videos. Everything went together good except now I have to redo it with the gaskets. I only did the rear one so far

    • @chiefpepdesign
      @chiefpepdesign  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Fluckiger it are big metal/aluminum type of gaskets. Important is the rubber one which goes around the chain guide tunnel. If you have that one you could go with fluid for the rest. I remember vague that in certain years that gasket was left out and only a ring type gasket around the piston/cylinder chamber plus the rubber one was installed...
