This is my favorite song of his/theirs and the backstory in itself is charming. The story this picture paints and the melancholy, quiet urgency the tune itself molds is just ethereal to me. I’m probably going to make a series of drawings for this because as the days go my love for this song grows
THIS IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE VERSION OF THIS SONG AAH! I swear if they had just done the song like this would be as well known as Sound of Silence. The arrangements whisk you away with the rapid fire, poetic lyrics.
Wow.... this stripped down EARLY incarnation of such a powerful song becomes even that much more urgent, personal ... Thank you for sharing this. My mind is blown. ;-)
To all of us PSRT fans (a very broad subset of S&G fans), this song and the whole album are canon. PSRT captures their very best in terms of harmonies, playful yet interesting lyrics, and beautiful arrangements. Poem might be Paul's most visually evocative song. You can just see that bottom-dweller deep in the subway, scrawling his message on the wall. Paul's lyrics are excellent: "stony womb", "crayon rosary", "suckled by the night". The litany of the wheels clicking is poetry. Beautiful.
I know exactly what your saying, especially in this song, this version is awesome. But on the other songs like bridge over troubled water and april come she will would of nevrr been the same with paul singing them. But with that said, paul simon is a damn genius.
richard irving IMO, Paul Simon is an underrated singer: he may not have the more powerful voice but he is a very expressive and soulful singer and his phrasing is unique. Listen songs like Some Folk's lives roll easy or Kathy's Song ( he is better than Garfunkel for this one), no doubt, he is a great singer. And concerning Bridge over Troubled Water, he made a wonderful Gospel version on his Live Rhymin' album!
@@MajorDenisBloodnok Yesss. Fully agree. He does have a beautiful and - to me - very soothing voice. True, Art's voice had (certainly back then) that angelic quality. But I cannot picture him singing a song like this solo, it just doesn't suit his voice very well. And to people saying Paul's voice doesn't have power, I'll just say two words: "Silent eyes". Paul also has a beautiful falsetto that causes my brain to release some love hormone or something. I don't know. I absolutely love Artie doing "Kathy's song" though. That is exactly the type of song where his more specialized voice shines.

This one and the version in New York live are excellent. I think the one of the album is kind of over produced and loses a lot of the urgency
I feel the same!! The album version just feels a little bit empty in comparison, imho.
PSRT?
parsley sage rosemary and thyme
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme
I often think that Paul's voice alone gives much more power to his songs, Garfunkel's harmonies sometimes softened them too much.
