  • In 1979, when I was a 22-year-old college student at Chico State, I had the opportunity to interview legendary jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard for the student radio station, KCHO. My colleague John Teasley and I were met by Freddie at the sound check, who then then drove us (at high speed with an open beer) to his hotel where we spent about 20 minutes interviewing him. He was a very gracious interviewee to a couple of awestruck college kids. This interview was on a cassette tape for the last 40+ years. Several professional musicians who I have told about this suggested I digitize the interview and post on TH-cam. Here it is!

This great. I got to meet Freddie back in 1981 and he befriended me. We had lots of talks and beers, some cognac. He was a very sweet and funny man with a sensitive nature. He was a unique talent and left his place in music. It was a privilege to spend those moments when he is off the bandstand just being himself riding in a car, bus or ferry or sitting down eating a steak or spaghetti.

I am SO glad you took the time to release this. And even a mini shout out to Chicago, which was a treat for me. Thanks so much for sharing!

There's precious little documentation of Freddie speaking at this particular time. There's more interviews from his 90s era I think. For that alone thanks for this! It's a shame that 16 minute piece he's talking about (the orchestral piece he men lions) was never released. If anybody knows the whereabouts of it - I'd love the info.

Perhaps it includes "This Dream" by Ogerman, on Freddie's "The Love Connection"?
