  • Improving my cheap bar clamps with some pieces of plywood. Now I have very handy clamps for woodworking and, when I use these cheap clamps, I do not need to look for wooden blocks to avoid marks in the workpieces in my woodworking projects.

I bought a whole bunch of these cheap clamps a few months ago and I have only lightly used a couple of them. I'm so happy that I found this video before they broke! I will be making this fix to all my clamps to prevent damage to them. Thanks for sharing your knowledge to make your views lives better.

Thank you Sergio, not only do you have a great idea, your narration is spot on, just the right amount of detail. I really appreciate when you narrate without the shop noise, and tell us exactly what you are doing. For instance, " now I turning the small piece over to drill without tear outs" I've found that rubbing some wax on the bar and the threads is very helpful also so that I can use the clamp one handed. I have arthritis and not much strength anymore. I'm off to modify some clamps!

Great idea. I'm going to put clear, thin, but quite tough, shipping tape on the wood blocks to prevent accidental gluing and to maintain the squareness of the blocks.

Thank you sir, not only is this a worthwhile idea.. but your statement about buying a couple clamps each time you go to the home improvement store is a good one also. I always need more clamps..

What a great idea Sergio, so simple yet so effective! I will certainly make some of these. When I remove the moving jaw on my own cheap clamps, I drill a small hole in the bar near the end and put through a small circle snap-ring from an old keyring. This can be removed easily again if needed plus it can be used to hang the clamp on a nail. Cheers from Australia.

What a GREAT yet simple solution with the snap ring. And ESPECIALLY the bonus if it being used to hang it for storage Awesome

Ty for showing the Safety factor when you used hand saw to cut small piece rather than table saw. Yes it seams simple and common sense but young or new to woodworking individuals need to be shown the safety aspect of woodworking and that’s exactly what your doing SO PLEASE KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDEOS . And cheers from CANADA

I just bought 8 of these bar clamps and was not aware of the issues you pointed out about how they can fail. Thanks for educating me regarding this problem. Keep up the great videos.

This is such a brilliant idea - thank you for sharing. I love woodworking but hate the glueing. Holding clamps, holding the project, holding strips of wood to protect the clamps from the project, the glue makes the project slip..... And I'm always rummaging for blocks in my scrap box. Thanks Sergio!!!

These are great! i used to put two blocks (one up and one down) so the wood is not dented by the clamps... You had a simple and brilliant solution! - (Why did i not think of that???!!!) - I really enjoy your videos. I think the clear explanations of what you are doing and your 'thought process' are valuable. (instead of some silly music and no explanation of the process, materials etc. Thanks again, and keep up the good work.

Thanks. I wish I found this video a while ago. I bought a load of these clamps from ebay, and they caused so many problems. In the end I threw them away.
But your video addresses the problems that I had, having to reach for scrap pieces of wood so my work wouldn't have marks in it.
Great video, and maybe now I will buy some f clamps again and try this.

Excellent idea. I've veen using 1" scraps to pad the jaws where you need 3 or 4 hands to set everything up. Will start making these for all my f-clamps today. Thanks. Haven't viewed any other videos yet, my tip...a piece of crepe rubber will greatly prolong the use of any sanding discs or belts. Cheers from Nova Scotia.

  • @mictheflash

Really good idea. To stop the plywood sticking to the item that you're glueing, you can put packing tape to the inside face of the plywood, this will stop it from sticking... Even if the tape sticks to the item it is easy removed by light sanding and you can easy put more tape onto the clamps when needed. It works well for me 😊

Perhaps instead of grinding off the rivets on the clamp bar. You could saw out a slot (circular saw or router) for the bar in the block all the way to the end and carefully cut a slip of wood to glue in the unwanted extra gap and capture the block to the bar. It may be faster than drilling and with careful cutting; neater.

12/25/2018: Thank you. Excellent. You are truly interested in the viewer learning the process and product. Very Clear. Suggestion: use paste wax on the board where you slide your pieces back and forth and its backboard. This is like waxing the table saw surface. This will reduce the muscle power you have to apply and make the process smoother for you.
