  • The Xk8 and XKR are amazing cars with awesome engines but they dont really advertise their power. For some that's a bonus for others its a fault. We look at why its so quiet and why its so easy to gain circa 20Hp with an exhaust upgrade. If you want to hear what an Xk8 sounds like with a full on sports exhaust follow this link

    I recently had my X308 00 build , on the bridge, and was amazed by the Quality of the exhaust, and still original !
    And just this week I see a Jaguar S-Type 1999 instruction Video, and they show how the S-Type had ..Voice Activation...never knew that !
    Greetings to all !

    Hi John, the large centre muffler is a straight through with no restriction. Its an anti resonance device rather than a muffler. For a better sound just delete the rear boxes (easy job). For a slight performance improvement replace the under axle pipes.

  • @volkris
    @volkris 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes! Definitely fixed.
    It's quiet because it's elegant. The engineers were able to mellow the harshness of the engine, and that's a really great thing.
    It's musical.

    I was tempted to consider changing out those over- axle pipes for more power before realising I don’t really need it😄

    Hi John,
    Happily, Jaguar placed the CCs in the vertical plane, making theft of same extremely difficult !!
    Purdy is certainly in good condition underneath.

      Yes You hear of plenty folk having low slung cats cut out while parked up. I recon our cars are safe even if they bring a team of 4 with trolley jacks and an angle grinder. Not easy to access quickly!👍
      Yes Im very lucky. And you can see why I was prepared to make the leap from PJ to Purdy despite her being even older.

    Nice one John, I've fitted several after market exhausts to my X100's and one very cheap upgrade is to fit XKR back boxes to the XK8. These are less restrictive and sound a lot better - in fact, they are almost straight through pipes. If you also replace the over-axle pipes and the centre box with a simple 'X' pipe - the sound is awesome for very little money.
    Incidentally, the centre box essentially balances the left and right bank gasses from the V8, which reduces resonances and evens out the sound between the two pipes. The 'X' pipe does this without any silencing so you get the full effect of this 'balancing act'. It's worth doing on the X150 too.

      @@ToTheGarage Great informative video John. This has made my mind up, my car came with a Stage 1 Adamesh conversion, after seeing just how restrictive the over axle pipes are, I am definitely opting to have the Stage 2 conversion as well. That amount of restriction is crazy- what where Jaguar engineers thinking of installing such a compromised system?

    Change the standard exhaust ( for those late boy racers) and the fuel economy is not so good. Back pressure from exhaust is important for engine efficiency. If you are driving regularly 800 km across Europe you are glad of the standard exhaust. On the XKR the Supercharger is the music.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hi Alan
      I agree that the standard system does a great job keeping the noise down but on a personal level I still want it more open on my XK8😁😁
      ~Re back pressure, Its important on 2 strokes for power but not on four strokes. a small amount on a four stroke can improve economy by preventing the exhaust gas drawing out any new charge if running extreme valve phase overlap but in the main, the most efficient exhaust would be terminated shortly after the last system link point (x pipe on our cars, which is inside the centre silencer on the standard system) and the effect of the x pipe is important as it creates a scavenging effect helping to keep the exhaust drawing the gasses out rather than restricting them,

    John, noticed the early XK8's only have a pre-cat and no post cat sensor, also no EGR, looks like yours is the same. Less to go wrong as exhaust is very simple (No EGR to block or CAT performance sensor). Keep up the great work.

    That big box in between the mufflers is the fuel tank right? I don't remember it being so visible on my xkr even at stock height

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kano. No that is the underside of the boot/trunk cavity where the spare wheel lives. The tanks on the xk8 and XKR are mounted internally above the rear axle and are accessed behind some carpet in the boot/trunk

      Yes. The fronts were new the day before i bought the car (But budget brand) The rears are so so for tread depth but 2013 manufacture and have plenty of cracking evident in the base of the tread.
      I would like to replace them with O.E. Pirrelli PZero as per my previous car, but I have spent so much lately (scissor lift and headlights) that it will have to wait a while😔.

    I own a 1998 XK8 with 65,000 KMs. I had a message saying my coolant in my radiator was low. I topped it off . About 1 week later I found a spill in the garage of antifreeze from my radiator . Is there an overflow ? This occurred only once which is odd . any suggestions as to what may have happened ?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi frank
      Yes there is an overflow and after topping up its common for little spill
      The tank you have been topping is a header tank which should be full. In the rear of the right hand wheel arch Behind the liner behindd the front wheel. there is an atmospheric tank that will send any excess to the floor
