    This system is so ideally suited to adapting vintage lenses - mad wonderful results

    With my Canon DSLR setup, I've tried shooting vintage lenses, but the focus was actually all over the place, but with the X-T1 manual Focus assists, it's a whole new ball game! (Split screen, doesn't that quite remind you of something.... ;-) used to have different screens for my old Canon AE-1)
    So I just got a Yashica 50mm f/1.4 vintage lens; and once I figured out how she wants to be treated, (like underexposing 1 full stop when shooting wide open, otherwise the focus goes reeaaallly soft) I got her to work just fine. Was really fun to shoot like back in the days, it really slowed you down and made you think before taking a shot.

    Hey John really enjoy your down to earth videos. I have an X-Pro 1 and X-E1 that I use with some Takumar glass. Whats really cool about it is these lenses were my father’s. And these are the lenses he used to take photos of my sister and I when we were kids. Now I’m 65, and using these lenses on my cameras 50 years later. That’s really awesome. They render differently than the Fuji glass in a very pleasant way. It’s like choosing the XP1 over the XH1, or classic chrome over provia. It all depends on your mood and what your trying to convey. Great fun.

    I only shoot my XPro1 and my XE1 with the old manual film lenses and adapters. I shoot mostly Nikon and Konica Hexanon lenses and also some old Russian lenses. What is really fun is to use a Mitakon Zhongyi focal reducer which I have for my Nikon lenses and to bring these back to basically full frame with an extra step of light is amazing.

    Had that 35 Color Skopar on my Canon P last year. Awesome lens, love the short throw on the focus ring. Would love to have that with my X Pro 1

    Really like the Helios 44-2 with my X-Pro1 and I adapted some old Canon glass that I stored at my dads from my youth... Only lens I kept was the 100mm FD F2.8 lens, but it gets little use... sold the 50mm FD lens as the Helios 44-2 has an interesting bokeh.

      There are some really nice FD mount lenses available for practically nothing these days.
      Did you have the 50mm f/1.4 S.S.C. lens with the gorgeous amber coating? I've never tried it on anything but my Canon FD bodies, but always love the results.

    Hi John, I have a lot of older film cameras and some excellent lenses. So on my X-Pro 1 (which produces a very film like rendition) I have an adaptor for my Leica Thread Mount Lenses - my favourite is a Canon 50mm f1.4 ltm which is permanently attached to my Leica IIIf and produces some fantastic bokeh. Also I have an m42 adaptor so I can fit my Pentax Super Takumar lenses. Good idea is to put a wider angle lens, stop down to f8, zone focus and shoot away. If you get a chance look up Jonas Rask, he is a Fuji X-photographer from Denmark, and has produced a series of articles about vintage lenses.

    I had used a Voightlander 58m f/1.4 and loved it, and also a canon FB 50mm f/1.4. Focusing is pretty clear through the view finder, and I probably took extra shots because I was tweaking the focus ring a lot. I think the legacy lenses are especially good at longer focal lengthens, since you more often use them in more slow paced, methodical shooting. I'd like to try a 24mm 1.4 lens from Canon, the SSC version. I hear it was really great, and had a radioactive element on part of the lens, that may turn yellow over time. They're pricy, but it sounds so curious and unique, I'd love to see pictures with it! I shoot on an x-t10 with the adapter.

    The two lenses I used the most on the X-Pro1 were the Zuiko 21/2 and 28/.8. The 21 is not cheap, while the 28 is. That pair gave wonderful results and gave me a perfect pair of street lenses. I traded the X-Pro1 but regret it and am thinking of getting another.

    Since I had a bunch of vintage cameras and lenses, I started using adapters with my Sony A6000 and found it to be fun. When I got the Fuji cameras I went out and bought the same adapters and found it to be just as fun. More for the different subtle qualities the older lenses provide but also for using some specialty lenses like my Nikon and Canon macros where I typically focus manually anyways. I do agree that the Fuji lenses are superior and sharper but that isn't the reason I shoot with the older lenses.

  • @slothsarecool
    @slothsarecool 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have the official adapter as well for Leica/Voigtlander/Zeiss glass, but they all look much softer than Fujinon glass, definitely don't match Leica on a m240 that's for sure. I love manual focus and can't stand focus-by-wire though haha, I wish Fuji would make some nice classic lenses.

  • @fitou143

    this is a great camera to shoot with legacy lenses especially when you can pick them up so cheap like the Russian lenses, but as you say the Fuji lenses are so sharp, i nearly always shoot with the 18mm and with the 16 meg sensor its amazing but fun with the legacy glass.

  • @mudgie069

    I have quite a few old Minolta, Olympus, M42 lenses which I use quite often on my X-T1. Zone focusing works well if you use a dof calculator. I use a Samyang 21mm f/1.4 for my street shots and I know at f8 I get from 1.5m to infinity and at F11 1.2 m to infinity for my range.

  • @douglasdrumond

    Fuji adapter has a button to go straight into that manual lenses menu (also you don't need to enable shooting without lenses, the camera recognizes the adapter and automatically does that), but it's very expensive, only for Leica M lenses and it doesn't support every M lens, there's a compatibility chart.

    Cool video. You are right where is a bit of a process to shoot with a manual lens. The hard part is zone focusing. And you can't be in a rush to shoot. You have to think your shots through. I will have to invest in a Fujifilm lens soon to maximize a lot of the features of my Xpro1. I think I'll get the 18mm since I need a wider lens. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

    Apart from using Minolta and Canon FD lenses, I would suggest people check out the "Meike" manual focus lenses made for the Fuji XF mount. There are 28mm f/2.8, 35mm f/1.7, and 50mm f/2 versions. The advantage they have over the legacy lenses is that they were made for the fuji mount so there is no adapter ring needed, so they sit very flush with the camera... and they make my XE2 feel like a poor mans Leica!

  • @georgs5870
    @georgs5870 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Apart from some "special-effects-lenses" like the Nikon Ai 24/2 I tend to use only long legacy lenses from 135 to 300mm with my X-Pro1 (tripod-work).
    Shooting with XF-glass is just more convenient on a daily basis.

  • @stlmills911

    I actually have more lenses that I adapt that I do Fuji lenses. I really love adapting my super takumar 50 1.4 as well as the Minolta 50 1.4 other favorites include Minolta 28mm and 135mm. It's a lot of fun to manual focus and it really slows things down getting you more in touch with the photo you're creating

  • @fgj4990

    Great video,. I also use the pro 1 this way when I am in the mood. My style of street photography means I often zone focus anyway. For some portrait work I always manual focus and have found the old Nikon manual lenses and a 50mm Leica Summicron superb with this camera.

    Hi great video, I shoot with a Helios 58mm M42 mount and an assortment of old Olympus OM lenses on my Pro1 and T2. The Helios has surprised me by how sharp it is for an old Russan lens (1984 I think) and how soft some of the OM lenses are, but sometimes I like a bit of soft focus All good fun.

    • @djtoman6875
      @djtoman6875 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You must be stopping the Helios down to get sharp results. Can't say mine has ever been "sharp," but then I'm always going for the crazy bokeh wide open with that hunk of crazy glass.

    Hi ,I'm using adaptors on lenses I already had on old film cameras ,so only cost was for the adaptors . OM , M42 , NIKON , M39 , only prob I've had was focusing to infinity on some of the lenses , otherwise it is fun and good results .

    What is your favorite Fuji AF lens on the xpro 1

  • @khronokraze
    @khronokraze 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have an X-Pro2 and I tend to feel somewhat the same way.. I prefer to go with the native Fujinon lenses than to adapt vintage lenses or other X mount lenses such as Zhong Yi Mitakon lenses.
    with the X-Pro2 specifically, I bought it to use with the OVF primarily. All of my Fujinon lenses are effectively usable with the OVF, which is between 18mm-56mm range, anything wider the frame lines are outside the viewfinder and anything to tele will just make a tiny ass framelines too small to use well.
    additionally, I like to manually focus and get confirmation of focus with the ERF in the X-Pro2 which also has real-time framelines adjustments as you are manually focusing (or AF).
    with non-Funjinon glass, manual focusing is not going to work with the OVF... the framelines will never change and you have no idea how to properly frame the shot. The only way is to switch to using the EVF, which I can, but prefer not to use as much unless it's critical.
    that being said, I am not totally opposed to using adapted lenses with the EVF occasionally.
    as such, my Stepdad recently gave me his Minolta film camera and collection of primarily Rokkor lenses. They range from 16mm, 35mm, 50mm, 58mm, 100mm, 400mm and a couple of zooms and macro lenses.
    Out of all, I think I'm most interested in trying the 58mm f1.4, 100mm f2.5 for portraits.. It may be interesting to compare the Minolta 58mm f1.4 to the Fujinon 56mm f1.2. I feel the 100mm f2.5 might make some nice portrait shots of I have the space to use the 150mm equiv. field of view.
    I also have yet to try the 400mm lens with a 2x tele converter which should effectively give me a 1200mm field of view... better get a tripod out for that one.

    I got Nikon 50 pancake and 28 mm Nikkor AIS
    2.8, I have to say that the colours and contrast of those lenses are far better than the Fiji ones , also the Pentax Super Takumar are amazing, that is my opinion of course.

    Super cool! What version of the Voigtlander 35mm F/2.5 do you have? I once owned the first version and used it with the few M6 and M6TTL cameras I once owned and thought they were very sharp, but the bokeh was nothing like the Leica 35mm Summicron, both the 3rd and magical 4th versions. But as you say, at just a fraction of the cost, a great choice for a 35mm lens! One thing to note and this may not be an issue anymore, but when I bought a few adapters to use with my M4/3 cameras and legacy lenses, I noticed the focusing distance was a little off. So I had to be careful when both hyperfocal and zone focusing. I guess a millimeter or two off in the size (length) of the adapter will make a big difference in that regard, but when focusing, since you are focusing off the sensor, focus point will be perfect. Unfortunately, the early mirrorless cameras really didn't have any focusing aids and zooming in took a few button presses. As you know, I look forward to your next video as the two Fuji cameras I am looking at are the X-Pro1 and X-T1! Take care.

    Hello, thanks for the video. I am considering to buy a x pro 1, but here is the deal. I have a nikkor 50 mm analog lens which I am planing to shoot with x pro 1. I am wondering if I can focus with optical viewfinder while the analog lens on. The optical viewfinder is the main reason I pick this model, so if I cant focus with it the analog lens I will search for another. I hope you have an answer.

    • @Nilly-tube
      @Nilly-tube 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't. The OVF doesn't do anything with manual, unfortunetly. The X Pro 2 has a picture-in-picture opton with OVF and a mini EVF on the bottom right for focusing, but it's quite a bit more expensive and has a different sensor - I haven't tried it out myself.
      I have an X-T1 with a Nikkor adaptor and it has become my favorite to shoot on. It has better Focus peaking or an old school split screen, which is my preferred way to shoot manual. Feels great in the hands too.

I've actually reached out to a Fujifilm rep I know to see if they can help out. I don't actually own this lens, more have I tried it out. That said, I can't imagine why that's not working for you. I'm a keen street photographer and am torn between the XT20 and the X-Pro1. The X-Pro1 is considerably cheaper but I think may now be starting to show it's age. I'd be interested to know whether you think the XT20 is a more worthwhile investment, although it is roughly twice the price of a used X-Pro1. Would be keen to know your thoughts. ;)

    Personally I think that all of this manual focusing with non fuji lens via adapter with focus peaking a bit overstated. I find manual focus peaking focusing even with fuji lens a bit tiring. Even in a properly lit room with contrasty subject my manual focusing is loosing to excellent xpro1 auto focusing. I guess photographers with 100% eye sights love it but I am not.

    • @douglasdrumond
      @douglasdrumond 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe you already have some lenses (I used to shoot Nikon before, and I have some Canon FD, M42 and Leica M lenses because I shoot analog too). Also, it's not always about the sharpest, sometimes you want a different look. For instance, there's a 50mm f/0.95 from Canon that's not the sharpest, but it's quite interesting with a unique bokeh.
