    This was the first "Thru-Hike" that Snuggles & I have done together since being out on the AT. I forgot how much of a Different Experience the trail is when you're with your Significant Other... Do you hike with your Significant Other? Do you always hike with a friend or do you go SOLO on the trail?
    👇👇Let Me Know Down Below!👇👇

      My girlfriend is not a fan of hiking... Sad but she understands my need to get out there and we make it work when I go solo 😃

      I normally hike solo or with friends, although I have finally talked my wife into hiking with me next summer (that only took me 30 years 😂). By the way, what pack was Snuggles rocking on the trip? I need to pick up something light for my wife. Great vid as always.

      Most of my day hikes are with my husband. My multiday trips have been with a friend or a group of women. I am hoping to get my husband to join me on an overnight soon. The plan is to get him addicted.

      I also met Darwin on the trail and remember passing your trail crew as well. Impressive that your crew (of men and at least one woman) were using a two man crosscut saw instead of chainsaws to clear the trail, with long sleeved shirts rolled down (😇) on a warm day. Thanks again for your hard work so visitors like us can enjoy the beauty of your state!

    • @OutandAboutWithDiane
      @OutandAboutWithDiane 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Savedcitytitan7118 Yes! You Could do Charleston Peak from South Loop to North Loop Trail. The Bonanza Trail from Cold Creek to Lee Canyon. You Could do the Hidden Forest trail to the Game Warden Cabin, Spend a night, Hike to Hayford Peak and Spend a night at the Cabin again. The Spring Mountains offer incredible hikes. Sometimes you have to get creative. I want to get more into traversing.

    • @Savedcitytitan7118
      @Savedcitytitan7118 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OutandAboutWithDiane yes i know most of these hikes. Trying to challenge myself more. Charleston peak is a day hike imo. Ive never been to the hidden forest cabin. But i just thought that was an overnighter. Adding hayford peak might make it a bit more challenging. Great suggestion.I have had a hard time finding mileage for bonanza. It only shows a 6 mile out and back but i know it can be longer if you pick it up from bristlecone loop. Arizona hot springs is a great overnighter also. I am working on some plans to do the tahoe rim trail but given the world situation might be a while

    • @OutandAboutWithDiane
      @OutandAboutWithDiane 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Savedcitytitan7118 yes you can do Charleston peak in a day but you can also make it into a backpacking trip. It just depends on what experience you want. If you are looking for longer trails, you can travel to the Rubies or the Toiyabe Range near Tonopah (4 -5 hour drive) the Toiyabe Crest is on my list. Its 100 miles.

    • @Savedcitytitan7118

    A friend and I did the Timberline trail twice. The first attempt ended at Cloud Cap Inn because we didn't feel like we could finish it. (IE: packed too much, went too fast and an injury occurred, and exhaustion.) We were disappointed that we didn't finish but we loved it so much that we attempted it again the following year. Last year, we attempted it again. We took our time, packed lightly as we could, and had the motivation to finish. Did it in 3.5 days (average is 4 days). We loved every minute of it despite a few points where we struggled and a scary stream crossing near Cloud Cap Inn. It was one of the most difficult challenges we faced but we both fell in love with the mountain, the trail, the adventure and the challanges. Now, we are both want to attempt to do the PCT in the next year or so.
    This video makes we long to get back out there and do it again (and again)! Thanks for bringing back those memories!

  • @memathews

    So glad you got the chance to hike my favorite trail, practically my backyard trail, and that you enjoyed it.
    Thank you, Snuggles, for filling out the free wilderness permit. I love Smokey too, so I volunteer on Mt Hood as a Wilderness Steward along the trail at least two weekends a month teaching Leave No Trace, that free permit is the basis for directing our efforts to maintain the wilderness environment. And, YES, I agree the Timberline Trail is delicious.
    Bearitos, bunnies, whales, and penguins? I've got to up my snack game!
    tl;dr
    CORRECTION: Darwin, please, the PCT joins the Timberline Trail for that section, at least according to historical references 😊. Of course, that's all debatable since the Skyline Trail from Mt Hood to Crater Lake was first marked in the field by a Ranger Fredrick William Cleator in 1920 and the Timberline Trail was officially created in 1934 by CCC crews. (Really trail-nerdy stuff: the Skyline Trail was first suggested in the 1880s by Judge John Waldo, who also suggested to President Cleveland that the entire crest of the Cascade Mountains be reserved as permanent forest).
    At 5:05 you mention the Timberline Trail continues away from the PCT and goes UP. The original 1934 trail went further up from the section where you mention this to an area called Yocum Ridge and then crossed the Sandy Glacier around 7,000', but winter snows continually blocked the route long into the summers, the glacier has hidden crevasses and ice caves that make crossing dangerous for less-trained hikers, and the trailbed was too difficult to maintain. So the trail was moved to where you hiked it and it links back with the PCT at Bald Mountain Junction.
    At 7:10 you talk about the trail acting as an octopus with the trail going in and out. That's a function of the trail following the timberline, the elevation where the forest stops, around the mountain (Timberline Trail, get it?).
    At 9:05 you had lunch in the Cloud Cap campground. The campground area was originally an 1880s vacation escape from Portland along with the nearby Tilly Jane campground. Across the parking lot from today's campground is the Cloud Cap Inn, built in 1889, which was a fancy getaway that brought visitors up from the Columbia River at the city of Hood River by steam locomotive and horse-drawn wagon (the train still operates as a tourist draw). The Inn was so fancy it was serviced by telephone as early as 1894--technology surrounded escape even back then. The Crag Rats now operate the Inn, a local mountain climbing SAR volunteer group, under agreement with the Forest Service and it's open a few days each summer for the public to view the interior.
    Yep, the Timberline Trail ends at a buffet. But an "alternate" route is doing the trail starting at Cloud Cap Campground and going counterclockwise to Timberline Lodge for an overnight in comfort and the final 14 miles back to the car after the buffet. I've done it a couple of times that way and it makes for a luxury escape somewhat like the folks in the 1880s enjoyed.
    So happy you enjoyed our backyard mountain and that you so regularly remind people to leave no trace, it's vital to keep the mountain and all our public lands as fresh as possible.

    Your videos (along with Dixie's @homemadewanderlust) are what inspired my husband and I to hike the Colorado Trail for our honeymoon. It was an awesome trip and the best bonding experience we could hope for. As a professional psychotherapist, I can absolutely appreciate the way hiking with a romantic partner can strengthen your teamwork, non-verbal communication, balancing of each other's needs, pace (given the 1-foot height difference between us), etc. (as long as it doesn't go the other way and make you want to throw your partner off the side of a mountain...) Plus, there is something to be said for learning to embrace the suck (and stink) together.
    Thanks for taking us all along on your adventures!
    Would LOVE to see Snuggles' gear list for this mini hike, especially since we do more extended weekend/section hikes living in Chicago.

    Darwin..... Thanks for the recommendation . I drove down from Seattle the morning of Tuesday the 10th and started my hike at 11 am. I got to the PCT split and headed up the long ridgeline climb. Finally found a few creeks and a campsite. That was at 18 miles. I'm thinking the same as where you camped.
    The morning of day two I got out of camp at 9:15 am and took my time. I really enjoyed the higher elevation hike from rock marker to rock marker to rock marker. Finally heading down and back into the woods.
    Again I may have slept where you did. It was on the other side of a creek with tall sandy walls about 7 miles shy of the lodge.
    This morning Thursday I got to the lodge at 9:30 am and pigged out. I was surprised to see about a dozen PCT nobo's at the restaurant. They're playing it pretty late to be continuing north. I wished them all luck.
    Again.....thanks for the suggestion.

      john wimer I’m hiking it in a week. You have any suggestions or advice? Was water easy to come by?

      @@Munkeez There Streams of sufficient size to harvest water from quite regularly. not a problem. There were a couple crossings that will have your attention. Only one I changed shoes for.

    Beautiful trail! Ramona Falls at 4:23 is so pretty! I liked all the water crossings, I know Snuggles didn't. Maybe because I'm just watching and not actually doing it. The last little fall at 13:49 was gorgeous ! Thanks!!

    Fun video! Wife and I have done all of our hikes together. Only difficult part is having the patience to match each other's pace, aside from that we've always had a great time. Granted we've nowhere near the miles that you two have!

    I really like those falls with the bridge very cool! The views are insane too! Those deep valleyes with the mountains off in the distance just stunning! Mt. Hood is just awe inspiring! oodCondensation gotta love it! Lol i hate that crap im still drying my bag out from over the weekend. It has the ultra dry down thank god but it still gets a little damp overall and takes a few days in my launder bag before i can put it away in my storage sack. Its strange i really like down bags but after using synthetic most of my life and switching to down for a few years im torn! I may go back to synthetic it just seems to work better for me in the long run. My body likes it and with wetness aka condensation synthetic i dare say holds up better in my humble opinion. I'm thinking a enlightened equipment synthetic custom convert next? When i do get one im gonna A & B the crap out of them lol. Thanks for sharing your trip Darwin & Snuggles! Always great content man! Stay safe! Hike on!

    Hey Darwin, I'm 55+ and though I have car camped and explored all of my life and recently solo, I only started backpacking 3 years ago. I find your videos entertaining and valuable. I do want to say though, that if you want to continue to broaden your audience, leave your disdain for section hikers, day hikers, overnighters, etc., at the door. It is air-apparent in your videos. Everyone getting out there to experience beauty may have their own challenges, limitations, life obligations or more. Appreciate anyone you encounter out there, unless they are chasing a bear down a cliff for a selfie or something, and know that many of us are doing our best AND are learning from you! Take care and give us newbies a break. We're your audience.
