    For all the folks who want to complain... Stu is the real deal. I've been watching his videos for years. He doesn't lie. Of you buy a keyboard from his recommendation, you will not be buying a bad product. Stu is maybe the most honest piano sales person on Earth. Just saying. God bless Stu.

    I love mine. I was planning to order a RD-2000 and was waiting on backorder. Last July 23rd I noticed Roland had released the EX in the USA. I checked the website I had my backordered RD-2000 from and the EX was in stock. I canceled the older version, ordered and received my EX the 26th and have been enjoying it ever since.

    I almost bought the fp-90x this month, but in the official stores here in Brazil the sellers informed that it will be updated soon, possibly for the EX expansion, and with that they no longer have in stock for immediate delivery. I'll wait for the 90x update to decide whether to buy it or the RD2000ex. This update of VPiano is the most realistic thing I've ever heard on a digital piano!

      If FP90X gets an expansion model, Roland will likely release a firmware update for current FP90X owners just like they have done with RD-88 and RD-2000 and the Fantom so they can update their keyboards via USB.

    I once owned an RD 500 from a gazillion years ago. I spent 2 years (on and off) meticulously gluing every single one of the fragmented plastic hammers back together with epoxy and fiberglass cloth. They had almost disintegrated, due to a material manufacturing defect. But I loved the PHA-4 keyboard so much in combination with Omnisphere's Keyscape C7. But today I am saving up this stunning baby.

      That is quite the undertaking, but, in cases where one loves the instrument, it can be a very worthwhile endeavour of course. Fingers crossed that you can get your hands on a new RD2000EX. They're magnificent machines! :)

    I wonder how the RD-2000 EX compares to the ES920 when the main focus is the piano sound. I don't need speakers. Would love to have the versatility of the RD-2000, but piano playing experience/immersiveness really is the deciding factor. It sounds like the EX could finally be a match for the ES920.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi there! The RD2000EX is a stage piano (no speakers), which compares more to Kawai's MP7SE (or even MP11SE to some extent). Overall, Kawai's SKEX samples have a warmer tonal profile, whereas Roland's samples are a touch brighter (without being overly bright and brittle of course). The best bet is to audition both options in person to see which one you resonate with more. :)

  • @MattJ-n8n
    @MattJ-n8n 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    Gonna be honest - with EX, there should be action upgrade to Hybrid Grand.
    PHA 50, although not bad, still has it limitations, especially in classical playing. I can't imagine dragging a heavy MP11 SE behind me on gigs. RD 2000 series is only one with relatively light form factor, out of perfroming keyboards, delivering this much high tech

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That would certainly put the RD2000EX over the edge! But, with that said, the inclusion of a longer key stick and different action may require the form and weight factor to be adjusted.

    H Brent, I asked more one month ago when you'll review the RD 88 EX, and you answered this topic was on the list of upcoming videos. But I don't see this subject yet. Considering some people complain about this upgrade on Roland forums (lost of one slot, piano sound level lowered), I wonder if there's something goofy with this instrument, and if you decided not to review it at all not to offense Roland. RD 88 is begining to disappear from vendors websites, so it will be great to see this review to know decision to make : run and buy a RD 88, or the RD 88 EX. Thank's for your answer

    I played the original RD-2000 at very great length (I had use of one at home). The sounds didn't quite hit the mark for me, but more obviously a problem (to me) was its local latency - in other wrods, it felt like everything was just a tiny bit (I mean maybe 7ms) delayed and I found myself tripping up in the midst of (virtuosic!) improvisations due to this disconnect between my nervous system and the response of this product. I am, admittedly, unusually sensitive to latency but this issue completely ruled out the RD-2000 piano for me.. I've heard the RD-2000 action described as 'heavy' but such comments may really be a misinterpreted response to the latency. I'll be interested to try this new version.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy the original RD2000 model. Your comments regarding latency issues is quite interesting to hear. I have played quite a number of RD2000 units (both old and new generation units) and have not experienced any latency issues. Based on my personal experiences with the product, I would be interested to see if you experienced the same sensation with other units of the same model.

    The price is surprisingly low (and back-ordered already). I've been on my Yamaha P228 since February and plowing ahead with it as I get back into piano but I would be willing to make this my next piano even now.. At that price? Just the sound and (I will certainly take your word for it) the keyboard are worth the price. Even on my laptop speakers I can feel the resonance clearly . I just play at home and dreaming of the day when I can take the headphones off and not fear annoying the neighbors so I don't need the portability and other professional recording features which make this a steal for pros. Will scaled down versions become available later? At an even lower price?
    Also an aside, my technical knowledge is not deep but I have no problem following and understanding these presentations. Gives me something to look forward to as I get a feel for what is available. And listening to Stu playing is a bonus.

      Thanks for tuning in! I certainly agree with the sentiment. The value packed into the new RD models from Roland are quite attractive and impressive. @@MerriamPianos Thank you for the reply. I am not worried about the affordability nor for portability. This new RD model is loaded with so many pro features that I will never use. I will never be a performer nor be recording (probably). I was just wondering if there will be more scaled-down models coming for those of us who are in it mostly for the piano sound and feel. If this is the only model that meets my needs, loaded or not with features I don't need, I would cough up the money without blinking. I have no complaints about my P225 but I am already discovering its keyboard limitations as I improve (it's happening faster than I expected... so far.). I'll take a look at the RD88EX. They are both exceptional pianos, but they offer different things musically. The RD2000 EX's core piano tone is a bit brighter than the MP11SE's. Furthermore, the RD2000 EX's action plays a bit heavier and stiffer than the MP11SE's. My recommendation would be to audition both pianos in person to determine which one you resonate with more. :)

      I know it might not be the answer you're looking for, but pricing is ultimately determined by a culmination of all elements. With that said, I think the CPU and all of the internal tone engines, sound libraries, and functionalities are what leads to a premium in the price point. Despite the price though, I would say the value proposition is excellent. This model is a powerhouse!

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi, Brent from Merriam Music here! Stu ended up parting ways with his NV5. In terms of suggestions between the pianos you've listed, they're all very different offerings from different categories. They're all excellent options in their own regard, but I think it would be helpful to filter things down to your core needs. Here are some questions worth considering:
      Do you require onboard speakers?
      Do you require portability?
      Do you require additional sounds/features? Or are you primarily using the instrument for piano practicing?
      From there, it really comes down to musical preferences. Roland actions tend to play heavier than Kawai actions (with the exception of the Novus series instruments perhaps). Kawai's core piano sounds also tend to be darker/warmer than Roland's tones.

  • @CoisesFoiledAgain
    @CoisesFoiledAgain 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Since this has the same action (I think both are PHA-50?) as the FP-90X, but I think not the same piano modeling engine (the RD-2000 EX still has a modeling engine that’s what - 2 generations older than the piano reality engine in the FP-90X?), it would be very interesting to get a comparison of just the piano modeling engines and their sound. Obviously the FP-90X has speakers, and the RD-2000 has far more sounds and far more flexibility as a MIDI controller. But if those things were extras and the primary use would be as a stage piano with external amplification... how do they stack up? Is the RD-2000 EX $500-900 US better? Is it even as good as the newer engine in the cheaper box?

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The FP90X and RD2000EX are both excellent pianos, but they are geared towards different uses despite there being some crossover. The FP90X is designed to be an all-purpose piano, whereas the RD2000 is designed specifically for stage/production use. The RD2000EX has more sounds and functionality as you mentioned. In terms of which option is the better proposition, it really depends on the context of use and personal musical preferences.

      Having a/b'ed the German concert expansion against the FP90x, the expanded RD2000 is much better. The FP90x is just a slightly boring, uninspiring sound, whereas the German expansion's Steinway character is very obvious to anyone who's spent much time with the real thing. It's not perfect but it is a big step forward. Roland really ought to upgrade the FP90x sounds to give more character, they are very underwhelming for a flagship instrument

    I’ve been waiting for this review. I can see this punching through the mix during worship with no issues. I wasn’t a fan of the sound of the rd2000, but what scares me is that it just has 128 more polyphony, i play some advanced pieces ands worry that i might have an issue with the polyphony. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos. I watched your video comparing the rd 88 with the s6000 and it left me leaning towards the Casio because authentic of your opinion that it had a slightly more organic piano sound and that is what is the most important to me. My question is does the rd 88 ex have the exact same sound as the rd 2000 ex. If it does then I would switch to the rd 88 away from the Casio, because I believe that the rd 88 ex now has an overall slight advantage. Thanks in advance.

      Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thank you kindly! We're glad you have been enjoying Stu's review/comparison videos. In terms of the piano sounds of the RD88 EX and RD2000 EX, there is some overlap, but it is important to note that the RD2000 EX has more tone engines and piano tone options. Here is a breakdown of the onboard sound generators between the two models:
      RD88 EX:
      ZEN-Core
      SuperNATURAL Piano
      SuperNATURAL E.Piano
      RD2000 EX:
      2x Independent Sound Engines
      Sound Engine1: V-Piano Technology
      Sound Engine2: SuperNATURAL
      SuperNATURAL Piano

    It's astounding to hear your improvisation! it must be really fun to play a tune in your head depending on your mood right at that moment! I can tell that you honed, practiced and defined your skill for ages. Well, went off topics but I just felt like someone should mention that. Regarding the topic... this machine can indeed make some warm, lush tone that's rather pleasure to listen to. I always hated that 'cold' simulated piano tune keyboards make back in the days. Amazing how far technology has come. One thing though. There are too many buttons, knobs, and sliders to comprehend 😅. Not against it, I'm just not familiar with.

    ok this video demonstrates great sound and of course exceptional playing of the RD2000EX, but my question is what speaker setup are you playing this board thru? i just bought the RD2000EX and mine doesn't sound as rich as you are demonstrating. I tried many different options such as 1/4 out to my Yamaha MG12xu mixer into my M-Audio BX8 speakers, tried using the XLR outs, tried by passing the mixer etc. Still the German Grand and others sounds seem a bit thin to my ear. I also have a Roland RD800 and an RD88 and both the piano sounds are more pleasing and richer on both these boards than the new RD2000 EX. What might you say in this regard?

      Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for reaching out with your question! Unless otherwise noted in our videos, we capture the sound of the piano via direct line out feeds. To ensure we offer as transparent of a tone as possible, we do not colour or do any processing to the sound in post-production. In terms of amps/speakers, the Roland KC series amplifiers are excellent. We typically use those in our showrooms to demo the Roland stage pianos and they sound quite impressive! :)

    What i loved about it was that you could start/stop a rhythm patch with one foot pedal and assign the other foot pedal to switch to the second/alternate pattern. It would do a fill each time you switched. I haven't been able to do that with the RD 2000

    Always a fun to watch your reviews. Mr. Stu You are the best! Amazing pianist and very technically sound. I am waiting for the Kawai MP11se replacement but it seems there’s no chance that they will launch anything in 2024. After the MP series I had 2 choices RD2000 & Studio Logic Numa X GT and same time my eyes on Fantom8. Fantom8 has a same Piano sounds and action like RD2000 but wide difference in the price on both the models. Just a 15 days back I bought the RD2000, I got the super deal but then after few days I show the new upgrade model RD2000EX which is same as the old model except the new V-Piano engine include but I am very happy because I can upgrade my RD2000 in EX just spending $150, Thanks to Roland. I am little confused because I am also getting a super deal on Fantom8 so I have decided to sell my RD2000 and go with the Fantom8 and obviously I will upgrade the Fantom8 in EX just spending $200. Frankly speaking I don’t like the other acoustic instrument voices in Fantom and also lacking of performance mode. Yamaha Montage and Kronos2 is better that way but in terms of Piano sounds and action I like Fantom8. Synth sounds on Fantom8 EX is impressive but they still sounds digital. I have a many better VSTI for synth. I am little confused whether I should buy a Fantom8 or not because in future I will definitely go with the new MP series and I am sure Kawai will offer the Grandfeel3 action and better piano sounds. In fact currently MP11se has better key action and very realistic piano sound than any other Japanese make stage pianos. I am getting a Fantom8 for 2800 USD which is a very tempting price if will buy Fantom8 then I can’t buy new MP series. It would be great if you can share your opinion. Thanks! 🙏

      Hi! Brent here! Thanks for reaching out! We have not heard any updates from our Kawai reps regarding an MP11SE or MP7SE update. I suppose it comes down to a matter of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." It still holds up as an excellent, top-tier stage piano. I am sure once Kawai has new technology developed for their tone engines and actions, you will see an update to the line. In terms of the FANTOM-8, it is important to note that it is a very different offering with a very different intention. It is a full-blown workstation that allows users to do full production and sequencing onboard without even having to touch a DAW if they desire. The RD2000 EX is a bit more of a direct competitor against the MP11SE. They are both feature rich models, but they simply offer different instrument tones and action feels. For me, the RD2000 EX has a stiffer, heavier action and brighter piano sounds, whereas the MP11SE has a slightly bouncier, lighter action with warmer piano sounds. Thanks and hope this helps!

      @@MerriamPianosFirstly thank you so much for your reply. Really appreciate 🙏 I will wait for Kawai MP11se’s replacement because for me action and piano sound is very important. I have canceled the plan of buying Fantom8 because for music production I am using a Logic and I also have many VSTI so buying Fantom8 will not make sense to me and practically I don’t need all control facilities which Fantom is offering as I am not a hardcore programmer. I love the Kawai piano sounds over Roland. Kawai delayed so much to replace the MP11se, In fact they have discounted the MP11se long time back, If I am not wrong. I guess they will come out with the best model to maintain the standard like you said, Better action better piano sound may be they will offer 3rd party piano sounds. Thank you so much again 🙏❤

It was obvious from the specs though that the major update was to the stencil they use to print stuff on the piano...to add "EX" to the name :). They are certainly worth consideration if you are in the market for a top tier digital piano. However, it is worth exploring a few options. The new Roland LX models are comparably priced and offer an amazing musical experience as well. They simply present a different feel and tonal profile than the Kawai models.

    Is the Rd2000 a triple sensor keyboard like the CP/YC 88 boards from Yamaha?
    Can we play the Prelude at 95%/100% of the actual speed, which is pretty fast. I can do it on my old Kurzweil PC3 which is semi weighted, but would like to know if it can be done on a weighted 88 triple sensors keybed from a digital piano.

      Hi there! The RD2000 uses the PHA50 action, which is a triple sensor action. To that point, even the more affordable PHA4 action is a triple sensor action. Also, you should be able to playing any piano you can on an acoustic piano on this model with sufficient practice and technical development.

    I hear a lot of complaints why Roland "recycled" their RD 2000. But this was always one of my biggest complaints about hardware vs Laptop + VST. If I wanted to expand the sound of a stage piano I had to buy the whole hardware, although keys etc. were still good. So in my opinion this is a good move as processing power is still powerful enough for the new sounds.

      The PHA50 action on the RD2000EX has a bit of a stiffer feel compared to the MP11SE's Grand Feel I action, which has a bit more bounce to the key motion. The pivot length and overall weighting is fairly comparable though. It really comes down to a matter of playing style and personal preference.

    Ok, so I've asked this question and cannot find any answer as yet.
    If you take an existing RD2000 and buy the upgrade for $199 (both the GC grand and Upright v-pianos) is there any difference between the upgraded RD2000 and the RD2000EX?
    If not, in the UK, people should buy the original RD2000 and upgrade it because that's far cheaper.
    In the UK
    RD2000 = £2000; upgrade = £158
    RD2000EX = £2400-£2595
    If there is no difference, then dealers are taking £242-£437 more when you buy the RD2000EX for no extra benefit unless you value a sticker.
    So my question is: what is the difference?

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To my knowledge, there is no difference between an upgraded RD2000 and the RD2000 EX. With that said, it is important to note that the price points vary in different regions/markets. It sounds like going the direction of upgrading the original RD2000 model is the more cost-effective approach where you are. In other regions, this is not the case. I suppose it is also contingent on you being able to find a non EX version of the RD2000 from a dealer, given that the original RD2000 won't be manufactured anymore.

    • @dougmarkham
      @dougmarkham 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Does your Fantom 8 come with both expansion packs? How does the sound compare to other popular boards: MP7SE/MP11SE, Nord Grand (White Grand), Korg Grandstage 2 and Casio PX-S7000?
      Is the new V-piano modelling setting a new benchmark or would you say just different?
