The Way She Gave The Auntie Praise 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 I’ll Always Support Her Because She’s Simply Her 💕 And Kinda Made Me Check Myself And Realize We’re All In This Together
Great interview! I just love the way she thinks and see the world, she's a very light spirited and down to earth person, it's always nice to listen to what she has to say :) Thank u for posting!
Wise beyond her years. I would say she had a very good upbringing. Expresses herself so well. Very impressive young lady! She seems to have a very respectful attitude and more common sense than most ppl twice her age. Not a bad singer ether!
I think there is a huge difference between Iggy Azaela culturally appropriating the African American culture to her expense and joss stone. joss stone came on the scene as a soulful singer which I remember back in the late 90s early 2000s her whole "package" on the radio was that she was a love child of Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin. There were so many white, black and other nationalities before even Aretha and Janis that had a smooth and soulful voice. Iggy intentionally changes her voice in a "rap" song or when she is around African Americans. When the shootings were going on she still did NOTHING and she was by then a "rap artist" who was situated in America. The way I see it (and I hope many), singing and being soulful has no color, but rap and hip hop originated from the African American urban atmosphere in both LA and NYC. There is a HUGE difference.
your comment is a bit more nuanced and this is how a lot of black people in general would view this. i had to look closer to determine whether behind that beard and the Mustachu look you were really white because in real life i don't think most white people are fully equipped to grasp these nuances. they go on fight mode almost immediately. Before Joss there was Teena Marie. you should listen to her. Chile, i have no idea why white people slept on her.
Gate-keeping music based on race is a symptom of a bygone segregated era. To think lines should be drawn where something "originated" is the most stupid, outdated, ego-driven BS ever. Imagine telling someone they shouldn't straighten their hair, or should give "props" to all white people when they do, if they straighten their hair. Imagine telling Africans they should give "props" to the Western world just because they use smartphones. Imagine telling people they shouldn't drive a car because it "originated" somewhere else. It is a disgusting "us VS them" TRIBALISM mindset, which is in complete opposite to the melting-pot world we're supposed to be striving for. You cannot have equality if you engage in deliberate exclusionary practices. Disgusting.
she's great and I wish we all could see the blurred lines like this beautiful talented young lady😍 don't be mad cause she spoke her truth she's not from America and doesn't really get this whole hate thing that goes on within this country. people are sensitive and some have good reason but don't knock someone that wants everyone to live in harmony. call her privileged all you want but the girl ain't got a racist bone in her body. just had to say that because of some of the comments on this post. she's worked with all the great black soul artist and always gives them credit and they love her because she's genuine so don't set her up with a question then get mad because it's not what you wanted to hear.
ll she never tried to act like something she is not either, she is just joss a hippy chic from her little farm house in England who loves to make music of any kind. What I like is she doesn't want to change cultures but just appreciate cultures, she is very British. For one I love her new album best of all and think the world needs more of her mind set. Being an American I wish people would stop trying to change our culture to fit their own and let us be. I agree there is far to much judgment in this world and far to much hate. As she said once as long as your not hurting anyone then it's all good.
Where I come from (Ireland), we call it respecting other cultures when you embrace them and get inspired by them etc., we don't see it as Cultural Appropriation - seems to be a very US mentality due to their issues with race.
Follow Keith exactly! Here in the UK too. My parents are south Asian and I LOVE when I see individuals from other cultures embrace mine. I take curries to work ALL THE TIME!! and it's loved and I think it's great when my neighbours come over and ask my mum how to cook certain curry dishes. It is embracing other cultures and being inspired. I don't understand why anyone gets offended when it's out of love.
Cultural Appropriation IS A BUNCH OF CRAP. BLACKS HAVE BECOME SO WHITE WASHED THAT THEY LOST THEIR SOUL. NOW, THEY ARE ANGRY BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE FOUND IT. They need to feel proud that these great artists did not let the culture of SOUL MUSIC DIE!!!
Joss is a very smart woman as well as being beautiful and down to earth. Not in the least bit ""Precious". The US seems to be a very confused place in many respects.
Chiqagolil Kelly You’re an idiot. Shame on you for your ignorance about the plight of black people in the world. Whites have stole EVERYTHING from blacks and other cultural groups and tries to claim everything as their own. You know this. Go find YOUR culture. Oh I forgot, you don’t have one!
She is very naive about how other people might perceive the borrowing of their culture. But one thing that CAN be said is that she DOES show appreciation to the black people who pioneered her sound. Constantly giving props and tributes to Aretha, James Brown, Betty Wright, Lauryn Hill, etc. and outwardly saying she doesn't claim any rights to that herself.
Either you have soul or you don't. Joss has soul, I could tell you that with out ever seeing her. Cultural appropriation is just one person taking credit for another's talent, and in its self racist stereotype. See past the color and free your mind. I love you Joss, you keep it real.
I just love Joss Stone and more people in this world should think and act as she does. She is REAL - and who would want anything different than that. She has a truly beatiful soul and I truly admire who she is and really would love to hang out with her as, she is my kind of people!!
Aww she doesn’t even know there’s a line 🥰 she sang the way she love ❤️ I love it! There’s shouldn’t be any kind of norm in anything! She’s absolutely beautiful
Music is beautiful , it brings people together. Some lose the msg within the song because of their thinking .why can't you appreciate the song, dance , laugh and be happy . Instead of being close minded
Good interview! The words Joss shares which reflect her not thinking about any colour or creed until later in her life, how the lines between who is 'allowed' to sing what may be growing to be less important, notions of food and fashion fusion and more generally of cultural appropriation are really something to think about and I like how Joss explains what this all means to her. Good interview! X
I absolutely agree with her completely! Have nothing to object to it, maybe only a few things to add. I don't believe in the concept as something fundamental either. Culture is something naturally organic. I truly believe you can't build walls between or around cultures.
aside from that, this was yet another lovely interview i've seen of joss. she always comes across like a sweet and gentle person no matter what interview i've seen, and i know this interview is 3 years old but still, i've seen her latest one and what i said still rings true
Good interview by Chris, he got her to open up and speak fluidly about many subjects. I did feel that she side stepped the cultural appropriation question as (in the right context as it's a bigger issue) it is relevant to her. Overall a good chat and interesting all the way through. ...(", )
+TufKutBIP I agree although I don't think she side-stepped it, I think she just answered how she thought. She said she had only just heard of the term. The interviewer should have pushed her with another question really to narrow it down to the real issue. Ultimately it's more record labels than the artists, you can't stop white people singing 'black' music anymore than you can stop black people singing 'white' music. I think it's just something that will be solved with time in the end. Also it's like the Iggy Azalea thing - whatever you think of her music, maybe ultimately she is creating more an audience for black artists by getting young white girls into rap who would have never got into rap in the first place anyway.
Please don't compare this beautiful spirit called Joss Stone to the fake Oprah Winfrey ... Joss Stone is authentic and an original ... she doesn't blurt out pious slogans like Winfrey.
Cultural appropriation …. The answer Joss gave him was so on point. A while back someone said to me " I don't like when white women (referring to Joss) sing like blacks". My answer was "Oh, but is ok when black women sing like white people? I mean that is like saying if one is from Italy, Spain or where ever he should never sing a song in English if he comprehends the language. That is rediculous. Joss is so true to herself and will surely remain so …. Respect!
I love Joss's voice and I think the rap she gets from some on here is just unfair and without real cause. She sings like she does and she does what she does very well. She has had a lot of exposure to great black soul artists from the beginning of her career and they supported her because she had talent and did justice to the music.I think Joss deeply respects the music and its origins and is certainly not ignorant of many of the issues black people may face in the America and through other parts of the world. She gave up a lucrative record contract to do her own thing and make the kind of music she wanted to.She is touring the world bringing other peoples music to all of us.She is involved in many great charitable causes and sings with soul and conviction. It is just too easy to drag other people down and criticise all the time. There is too much other shit going on in the world to waste energy on criticising someone who is doing their best to be a positive force in the world.Let her do her thing. She has had much endorsement from various black artists including Damien Marley who was the one who suggested she did a reggae influenced album and she was reluctant to do it because she knew all the flack she would get.She has worked closely with many african american artists like Raphael Sidique and I am sure they have enlightened her on many of the issues of what black people suffer in America. They are friends and artistic collaborators of hers. She has her talent and she uses it well in my opinion.
I like how she says "record" lol, on the serious side, I knew who she is but never heard any of her stuff up until today, I watched interviews and live concerts and she really caught my attention.
Real quick. the point is she could have had the same talent, and have been black and underappreciated and looked over because shes just another black soul singer but for it to come from her its more appreciated because its unexpected and companies can make more selling her image. FYI HUGE FAN its not her fault the world is the way it is but still she has to know being blonde and beautiful singing like that opens more doors than would open for a dark skinnes kinky haired female. Its not a black thing its a real thing i.e. mac makeup native inspired line with native American motif but no native Americans. How you appreciate the culture but not the people
i disagree, were she Black, everything else being unchanged, (voice, style, influences etc.) she would still be successful because she is that talented, only difference is she wouldn't have to explain herself to people like this interviewer who clearly wants to make her appear as an aberration...
Why do these idiot interviewers always have to bring gender and race into it ... her genitals and skin colour have nothing to do with her humanity, her sweet spirit, her soul, her values and her respect for all that is good.
Joss, you're a great singer and you're self -aware. You're about to have a baby. I really hope you take this opportunity to maintain your health, your voice, and your child's health by quitting cigarettes. Mick Jagger told you to quit years ago. Here's your chance, wonderful lady.
she clearly gave credit and admit the sound and style of music shes thrived off of isn't of her invention, yet people still saying "stop taking and give back" like wtf, were you not paying attention to what she said in this very video!?! damn ppl are dense as shit when it comes to trivial nature of cultural appropriation. smdh
I've noticed that other cultures have never had a problem appropriating electrical generation. Don't be silly people, the good stuff is out there for all to share, or it should be.
As an English girl and a young person she does not understand the racial hate and discrimination that happened towards African Americans in the United States. A history of being creatively robbed, exploited and often demenaned for not being their own individuals. Can understand why people got so sensitive.
Great interview! I love how Joss is so diplomatic: "They are being precious". Translation - They think way too much of themselves and their culture. LOL
And Adele is another one not a good singer she had catchy songs but that's it she look ugly but people thinks she everything I don't believe the hype the only white people who I think is real is ones that don't try to hard and stand up for people who's being explordit.
Cinnamon83 Peaches. Its unfortunately obvious that you are the product of our American inner city schools. If you don't want to be stereotyped, learn how to spell. I shouldn't be able to describe you from what you write
If no one can say " this is my culture... mine mine mine" why can someone who's not a part of that culture say it's not yours, it belongs to everyone? She is really disconnected and has no understanding of how African-Americans feel and their experiences, which is odd because she spent so much time recording with them. They never had a conversation about cultural appropriation? This really annoys me, because there's a long history of black artists not getting credit for the music they created and white artists doing the same music and getting praise without even acknowledging its source. Blacks in America aren't against people of other ethnic groups enjoying their music and culture, they just don't appreciate when people do it without understansing the cultural and historical significance of it...and the willful ignorance against the originators of that culture. Some of you commenting here are so arrogantly dismissive even without trying to understand how my people feel about it. I'm really disappointed in her response.
Levar Mitchell. You can say a culture belongs to everyone for the simple reason that cultures, like languages, don't have owners, so the feelings of people about culture are entirely irrelevant. The 'significance' of something cultural is entirely subjective. And you don't fight racism but encouraging racism. The concept of cultural appropriation is racist. It seeks to create a kind of cultural apartheid based on skin colour or nationality.
Pretty sure next time you eat a burrito or have Chinese food you wont feel like that belongs to anyone. Love her music and her view on most things. "Can't we all just get along"
so, what with Clapton and many others and the Blues? If you knew a bit better the UK you'd see a wider picture, reggae, ska, blues... are part of local culture as much as afternoon tea
Hi! I am so sorry to be asking you this but I really can't help myself... I am a non-black person of color who happens to love soul/r&b/blues music. I love singing and playing these genres however I am also aware of the cultural and historical significance of these genres and and the unfair credit that many non-black (typically white people) get compared to black singers who are just as good and most of the time even better. this may seem silly but at this point, as a musician, I'm just asking around for what people think. I'm really making sure I do not disrespect the culture and music in any way. so if you could give me some advice maybe? I'm sorry for long monolouge but Im really just looking for answers....
Very nice Joss - I love your normal accent and I think an interviewer who comes straight out and says he's been a fan forever in this respects would do the trick for you even better Im sure. You have a nice warm hearted sincerety and sense of virtue that is a rare commodity in these times on stage. cia dear! see ya! Im showin you off here - hope you dont mind dear - musicfromrizzo.info/greatest_song_performance_picks_of_Ms_Joss_Stone_(musicfromrizzo).html - from time to time we've even had you on here: 10mostbeautifulwomen.com cheers!
Joss never appropriated the culture she’s sung rnb from the start and sung it WELL end of conversation. And yes appropriation is very real but no Joss has always been cool and I love her music. The Winehouse questions are a bit forward she didn’t know Amy why are you asking her about her...?
Did yall watch/listen to the same video I did??? Though this interview is culturally unsurprising...it's still a hard pass for me...Joss Stone doesn't acknowledge her white privilege at all, she is British white women. She wouldn't experience racism...ever. We don't just "share" culture...whiteness appropriates culture, whiteness literally steals culture and demands that this behavior be acceptable, it's not. Her comments are reckless and there's nothing precious about that.
They can't be original at all I can like or appreciate someone culture but I stop there I don't want to look like them talk like them are even do my hair like them,u can even fall in love with other cultures.I know for a fact blacks is often immatated but can never be duplicated.
Look st Justin fakealake I don't know how he still tricks people he is not a good looking guy he can't sing at all in he had the nerve to disrespect prince I would never buy his music.
No Joss you have to give back or at least give recognition, you don't just take take take, you have to give props back to the culture that you take from.
Right on man. I vividly remember how outraged I was when Miles Davis played Cyndi Lauper's "Time after Time" and didn't give credit to the white pop culture he was appropriating. 30 years ago and I'm still fuming.
she said she didn't want to take ay credit for the genre and also said she just found insipration in their music. There is nothing to be angry about when listening to good music
+plank she didn't say anything about the music "ticking her off" she said she has no real concept of the long history (and present) of discrimination and hate towards a culture just for being who they were/are. Isn't she lucky? It's true she has no actual idea of the issue so to label it as precious is pure ignorance=privilege=bliss= etc etc etc
Kerry Kennedy excuse me but I don't know if you know anything about joss or not but as someone who has followed her since the beginning and I do mean beginning lol she has always givin credit to the artist she was inspired by like Aretha and she even said their names in this interview giving them credit damn!
reneehunter56 yes Renee you are right ..but I was talking about her album that she won best reggae album our artist.. can't really remember... I can't remember if she gave a mention to anyone ..if she did please point me to where she did...as a small country with so much influence on music and a lot of other things..even if we don't appreciate them ourselfs...we should get a mention....Joss and others have taken reggae a far way...but does not give them the privilege to just not say nothing...bless up renee
I would not consider Joss a trailblazer, she has a great voice and has made the most of her talent.Amy Winehouse on the other hand definitely, she was in a domain of her own
It's curious how activism is also disconnected from What they pretend are fighting for, have you ever asked actual musicians how they feel about it and how black músic is a huge basis for World culture? In my country People like you want our culture to be kept in darkness and dirt because we ripped off our clothes when Carolina Herrera and other brands take inspiriation in our culture, but hey! Let 's keep it close and personal so anyone can let it Survive and let obvlibion do its duty when it comes to fairly erase a culture
Are you kidding me with this shit this bitch isn't no trailblazer she copies black music and sound I don't like her music or her voice she can't tell us how to feel.
And his why is this host kidding her ass so much I thought she fell of earth I always thought Joss Stine was a fake, and I bet she likes and only date Blackman too.
She's a little naive when it comes to race. Race matters. She has white privilege while portraying the idea of not have it or knowing what it is. Really....
Joss Stone is so true. We should not have to be a certain race to sing a certain way. Or eat a certain food or dress ect. Live free people.
The Way She Gave The Auntie Praise 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 I’ll Always Support Her Because She’s Simply Her 💕 And Kinda Made Me Check Myself And Realize We’re All In This Together

So very, very true, and very well put Craig M!
She is one wise young lady
I'm glad she put it that way... I don't care what race you are doing whatever, I care if it's good.

How not to fall in love with her everytime time she does an interview 😫😍
I run out of words to describe how talented, sweet, smart, beautiful, shinning this human being is...she is like a modern goddess
Speaks so well, genuine, intelligent, kind and funny ❤️

Nice girl a bit idealistic and naive though.
I love Blue Eyed Soul artists Like Justin Timberlake Amy Winehouse JOJO Teena Marie Michael McDonald Dusty Springfield and Joss Stone
You give credit back by singing that kind of song. Singing soul is the ultimate credit. End of story
Joss, you're a great singer and you're self -aware.

I've noticed that other cultures have never had a problem appropriating electrical generation. Don't be silly people, the good stuff is out there for all to share, or it should be.
She is a little green, on this topic.
As an English girl and a young person she does not understand the racial hate and discrimination that happened towards African Americans in the United States. A history of being creatively robbed, exploited and often demenaned for not being their own individuals. Can understand why people got so sensitive.
Well, Joss isn't robbing, exploiting or 'demenanded people for not being their own individual' so you're just being petty if her music ticks you off!
+plank nah she is just acting like a black woman
Paula Acosta
what does 'acing like a black woman' mean to you?
Get over yourself, every music comes from somewhere
delirous8 the same thing does go on in England you know.
That's one smart woman
Great interview! I love how Joss is so diplomatic: "They are being precious". Translation - They think way too much of themselves and their culture. LOL
And Adele is another one not a good singer she had catchy songs but that's it she look ugly but people thinks she everything I don't believe the hype the only white people who I think is real is ones that don't try to hard and stand up for people who's being explordit.
Cinnamon83 Peaches. Its unfortunately obvious that you are the product of our American inner city schools. If you don't want to be stereotyped, learn how to spell. I shouldn't be able to describe you from what you write
😍 sweet angel
Listening to ro this in 2024 artists arent allowed to say what shes saying omg
She still going? Not heard from her for a long time
She is indeed. Never one to make headlines but carries on steadily doing what she does best.
A lovely girl in all her ways.
STFU DUDE U SOUND STUPID AS FUCC ALWAYS GOTTA GO THERE
Levar Mitchell.
O shut up just because y'all came up with something doesnt mean y'all can be the only once doing it.
😋✌️❤️🎶🎵🎵😍❤️👧💙💚💛👧🧠🌎🌹🎵🎶💋🥰🤗
Wouldn't be an interview without bringing up race, huh?
Geeze, come on guy
I would not consider Joss a trailblazer, she has a great voice and has made the most of her talent.Amy Winehouse on the other hand definitely, she was in a domain of her own
Precious. She literally belittled the perspective of minorities as being precious. Goodbye.
That's just how she expresses herself, it's not condescension
Really....
She made a very thoughtful comment. I was impressed by it.
Wow I wish I grew up with that kinda white privilege. Good lord
itscooltobeyou whatever she is the sweetest nicest genuine person and it's got nothing to do with her race! stop being so precious 😍 spread love✌
ha ha that's my new phrase for 2017, stop being so precious
itscooltobeyou Oh shut the fuck up and stop blaming other people for your problems. The only person holding you back is you and your shitty attitude.
Shes a sweet girl.
Aretha franklin wasn't impresse.lol
