Nehushtan: The Bronze Serpent [Beyond Belief]

- Dive deep into one of the Hebrew Bible's (Tanakh) most mystifying tales, found in the Book of Numbers. In a world where consequences befall the rebellious, serpents strike the Israelites, bringing venomous pain and agony. But salvation comes in an unexpected form-a shimmering bronze serpent, raised high on a stake. One mere glance at this metallic "serpent" brings healing and life.
But, there's more than meets the eye. This tantalizing tale resurfaces later in the annals of the Hebrew Bible, intertwined with the legacy of one of history's most righteous kings. Not stopping there, its traces are even found within the Apocrypha. And, for those familiar with the New Testament, a peculiar connection arises as John's Jesus draws a parallel between this enigmatic snake and his own role. Don't miss this one!
So love the image
I have always thought of this passage in terms of people who have been traumatized. Sometimes people who have been traumatized are so overwhelmed that it’s too hard to think back to the traumatizing event, or sometimes they prefer not to and bury it inside themselves. It seems to me that people who are strong enough, or develop the strength, to look at the traumatizing event are healed. But that’s just my interpretation (because it works for me.)
Why would Yahovah tell them to look upon an idol for healing?
rabbinic tradition of gematria also connects the word nachash with the word moshiach as they have the same numeric value for whatever it’s worth.
IMO, Nehushtan was a test of Moses.
The rebellious people turned to Moses for deliverance not YHVH. Moses then went to YHVH, and YHVH instructed him to build the idol - the image of nahash on a pole.
We know the people WORSHIPPED this as Hezekiah destroys the image because of how bad that worship gets. What Christians fail to realize is how often YHVH will test us. Remember right before this event, YHVH tells Moses to speak to the rock and instead Moses hits the rock. He failed the test, so YHVH does what?
Tests him again.
None of those who looked upon the bronze serpent, were healed by the idol entered into the promised land.
None of those healed by the NT idol, that refuse to destroy it and serve YHVH alone will enter the return (Deut 30:1-6) promised by YHVH.
@charlesm72 Absolutely brother - they don't see that Deut 18:15-19 was also because the people cursed themselves:
[Deu 18:16 LSB] "This is according to all that you asked of Yahweh your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let me not hear again the voice of Yahweh my God; let me not see this great fire anymore, or I will die.'
They _refused_ to shema (hear) the voice of YHVH, and this is why they what?
[Exo 20:19-20 LSB] Then they said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself, and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, lest we die." And Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may be with you, so that you may not sin."
THEY SINNED, because they WOULD NOT SHEMA YHVH.
So this promise of a prophet like Moses (whom was Joshua son of Nun) was because of their hardened hearts. I know many Talmudists don't want to hear that because of Jesus perverting Deut 24:1-4, which was not due to the hardness of their hearts, but Yah's mercy.
Likewise - Deut 18:15-19, is CLEARLY telling these people that refused to hear the voice of Yah? That he will provide another mediator for them.
Remember what Joshua told them?
[Jos 24:19-22 LSB] Then Joshua said to the people, "You will not be able to serve Yahweh, for He is a holy God. He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your transgression or your sins. "If you forsake Yahweh and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and consume you after He has done good to you." And the people said to Joshua, "No, but we will serve Yahweh." And Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen for yourselves Yahweh, to serve Him." And they said, "We are witnesses."
They will not be able to serve him, and that's exactly what happened. They turned to their idols, they turned away from YHVH to serve their idols and MEN.
[1Sa 8:7 LSB] Then Yahweh said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them.
They reject the living God for men, whether it be any form of those following the NT or those following Talmud - they still wait for a man to fulfill their needs.
In ancient times , during Exodus, Moses instructed the Israelites to worship a The copper serpent, Nehushtan, fiery serpent named Nahushtan. Interestingly, the name Nahusha is also mentioned in the Mahabharata. One of the Pandava brothers' ancestors was named Nahusha, a great king who performed many sacred rituals called Ashwamedha Yagna. Due to his meritorious deeds, Nahusha was given a temporary post to function as Lord Indra in heaven, but he made some mistakes that caused Sage Agastya to curse him. As a result, Nahusha fell to earth and turned into a large python. The word Nehushtan is similar to Nahusha, which means "the place of residence of Nahusha" in Hindi.

The image of the serpent cross looks like an Egyptian Ankh, which was for them a symbol of life.
That makes a lot of sense.
[Isa 36:6 LSB] "Behold, you trust in the staff of this crushed reed, [even] on Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
Very accurate my dude.
Thanks
Thank you Victoriah!
Maybe the idol could take back into itself the venom of the serpent, but then worshipping it blindly would be like worshipping a vial of venom. Copper was known to extract the extra body heat in olden days.
How about ‘make a Seraph’ means make a great heat or fire? To make the bronze
May I remind you to Ex.4.1 and 4.17 !?
Could you guys do an episode about the graven images? We're questioning what it actually means. We've gotten rid of stuffed animals and other forms of animals and people and I've put away certain fishing lures that were close to being shaped like a fish. Are we over zealous or are we being obedient? Please please consider an episode on this topic.
Shalom
The two snakes of the Caduceus are named e.g. IDA and PINGALA .... more to be found in Kabbala Tree of Life and also in the Kabbala related NADIS Yoga teachings!
This Caduceus is also to be found on Uniform epaulettes of pursers of the trade Marines.
Hor is another name for Sinai/Horeb, maybe?
You are not understanding the commandment, it's you shall make no image of anything above the earth on the earth or under the earth, you shall not bow down to it or serve it.
The issue isn't making images, the issue is bowing to it and serving it.
Which is not what happens in the desert, they are merely to look upon the brazen serpent, which is not an act of bowing or serving.
Issue isn't images it's how you treat them.
