  • This is a short tutorial video on how to replace your radiator drainage plug. Mine snapped off because it is plastic so I had to figure out a way to replace it.
Vehicle: Used a Ford Ranger but process can likely be used in many scenarios.
Supplies needed: Needle nose pliers, bucket, replacement plug.
    Process:
    1)Place bucket below drain
2)Apply pressure to innards of the drain plug
    3)Twist out plug
    4)Collect coolant
    5)Twist in new plug
    6)Enjoy

Good job and nice to see I am not the only one to get sprayed by some kind of engine fluid, while doing maintenance.
    Good attitude, man.

Just broke mine today off my ford edge. I bought a replacement but not enough sunlight to change it out. Have to wait till suns up. I was worried because replacement looked different than original but, after watching your video I'll go with it! Thanks!

FYI as a Master Tech, keep in mind that the radiator drain cock, usually does not seal after you open it up. The "0" rings tear or break, so that when you tighten it back, it drips...Its best to have a new drain valve when you do this, unless you have new "0" rings to install on the old valve. Especially on the Dodge diesel trucks like the 2007 3500

This just happened to me today! Thank you for the info. I also used the tool given out with cans of paint to start the turning of the plastic plug! That tool made it possible for me to finish it off with the needle nose pliers. Replaced it for a '97 Jeep wrangler same part too 61127 from autozone.

Just snapped off the plug head on my Ranger last night. Backed it out somewhat with an allen wrench, but there's not enough "meat" left on the plug to get a good enough grip to get it out the rest of the way. Thanks for posting this video. With needle-nose pliers and some well-chosen expletives I hope my experience is as good as yours. What I don't understand is why these plugs have the split tail with barbs kind of like toggles to keep the plug from coming all the way out. If it comes halfway out you're going to lose your coolant anyway, and the barbs just make it harder to remove the plug.

I completely understand. The radiator plug ended up not being the reason i was losing fluid but it was nice to knock it off the list. Let me know if this method works out for you!

next time don't mess with those drain plugs just to pull off the bottom radiator hose next time it's faster and easier and you don't have to worry about breaking those plugs off

You are the only one who showed the actual removal and tightening of the drain nut. Tighten clockwise and loosen counter clockwise. On my car its not loosening when turning counter clockwise. Do you get such nuts that work the opposite way to your example? Thanks for a useful clip.
