Went for a drive today to listen to the entire record in one go. Just takes your breath away. I do remember hearing it for the first time around in 72. Who was that man doing those vocals with a voice better than Clapton's. Took time but I learned. The rest is history.
LOVED Thorn Tree in the Garden. Bobby was such a thick layer of sound in that band, And what a voice..Bobby, you were probably my favorite coming out of that album. ;) ;) ;)
I'm 67 and you have helped in a huge way putting the sound track to it all. Now listening to how you made the music and with who is a gift I can't thank you enough for giving me. Like reminiscing with an old friend. Yours was a life well lived with memories so crisp taking us all with you on that ride. Thank you so much for doing this.
I heard Duane Allman was asked to join the band. Although Duane wasn’t a member of the Dominos his name appears on the album as if he was, rather than as a ‘special guest’ - was that significant, to try make him think again about joining? If I could only have one album on a desert island, it would be the Layla album - absolute greatness from start to finish, a true masterpiece!
Thank you Bobby and CoCo. I have been listening to much of your interviews and just so happy to have such an open conversation on an album that I bought as a senior in HS back when it first came out. "Anyday "came on the local underground station in Boston and I turned my head and said...." What the hell is THAT????" Wow. Blown away. Went out and bought the album immediately and I still have it. I am just so happy to hear how Bobby is just a regular guy who happens to be an amazing musician and singer. Thanks CoCo for persevering as only you can to provide us with such a wonderful oral history.
Beautiful painting, I couldn't keep my eyes off of it. Two black Swans with the sun going down on Lake Pontchartrain is what it looks like to me. Amazing stories to listen to as well.
I absolutely love these videos, would love to hear a story about Peter green if he has one, thank you so very much for these, Bobby was and still is a legend
It’s early afternoon Christmas Eve 2021 and I’ve been listening to your wonderful stories Bobby, and enjoying Coco’s company also! Love seeing your beautiful kitty Oiya! . This is my first Christmas in 68 years without my beloved brother Richie. Hearing you guys speak and Bobby telling his life stories of way back when and sharing these precious memories of his with all of us makes this day pass much easier! God bless you both for the comfort you have brought to me these past months and even before that! You have no idea how much this means to me! Have a happy, joyful and blessed holiday season! Sending you gratitude and much love straight from my heart!🙏🏻❤️🕊✝️
Cathy,, I am so sorry for your loss just keeping listening to Bobby Coco and Derek and the Dominoes you will get through this 🙏 you have a guardian angel 😇 💙 watching over you now. I hope this helps you find peace in your heart and in your soul.
@@kathif17 thank you so much Kathleen for your kind and consoling words! Prayers for you to have a happy, healthy, and joyful life! God bless you!❤️🕊🌹🙏🏻✝️
The first three songs on the Layla record are just incredible. Your playing and singing are what makes the album what it is. For 50 years the Layla record has been a part of my life . Thanks for all the great stories about your life.
When Bobby talks about how it felt to record and complete such an amazing record, I can FEEL what he's talking about...a holy moment indeed. As I've said, Thorn Tree is one of my favorite songs of all time. It's such a joy to get an inside view of something that has had such an enormous impact on my life and countless others...thank you both so much. ❤️❤️ Beautiful kitty too, by the way!
"The guitar playing is phenomenal." Yes, that is true but the vocals are out of this world. Few albums have as much emotionally charged vocals as Layla. I understand the tortured state that Eric was in vis a vie Patty, but Bobby's vocals MADE that album. Name me one other singer that could have sung those harmonies, in those registers, with that power, like Bobby. And 'Thorn Tree' was the cherry on top...what a brilliant way to end that amazing record. (P.S. The 1970 'In Concert' album that shipped Gold? One of the greatest Live albums in the history of Rock and Roll and that CD has been in my many cars over the last 35 or so years...still is.)
It is really nice to hear how special it was to record it. Because this really comes through on the record. I’m sure talking about some of the bad stuff isn’t fun, but the real story is the only way to really tell it. Thank you. We all think there is some holiness mixed in that record for good or for bad.
Thanks for letting me hang out for these chats with you guys. I'm also 72 and remember those times like they were yesterday. I'm a player too, and there was magic in the air! Put another log on the fire, keep on painting and take care of each other. Cheers, Hal.
Oh man! Bobby - that’s my fav shirt, so far!!! (I’m watching out of order) For me, this just pure gold. I’ve had a life in music - payed a mortgage thru it! - nothing on the scale of yours, but, my little corner of the world was very much like yours - tobacco country in southern Ontario. Other than Levon, all the Band members come from under an hours drive from my home! I knew Rick, and still know Garth (as much as anyone can know Garth) I started our local “ Great Lakes Blues Society” , presided over the “ London International Blues Fest” for seven or eight years, and did a University radio show “the Blues Never Die” for years, as well. Now, I’m still a half assed guitar player, but have become a great acoustic guitar builder/repair/restore guy! I listen to these shows of yours in my little shop. I’m currently installing mandolin frets on a fret- less Jazz bass ( like Sklar plays) for the bassist in my Wed night jam band. Life is good. You and Coco are making it way better, right now! PS - Coco is doing a great job as “interviewer” ! It’s a though skill to develop, as I know from my radio days! I can’t tell you guys enough about how MUCH I’m enjoying this stuff! Big gift! Cheers
I want to tell you, the falling stars story, made me shiver & shake 38 years after shaking the monkey off. So happy all is well with you two. Looking forward to many more stories.
You can tell how magical and how much this time meant to Bobby drugs or not and he us spot on ot is the best record I have ever heard. The words written the music the everything was a God given moment in time that will last forever.
A big Amen to the best album ever! I've said it before..Layla album is a ride for me..start to finish and every time ..even now..I feel it still...I had some remorse a time or two with drugs back in the day ..on a much smaller scale..the toilet thing..lol
Thorntree in the Garden is a sacred moment for us listeners too, Bobby. I saw you play this live at Brown University with your solo band in 1972 or 1973 and it was beautiful.
I've often played and sang Thorn Tree...people always asked where it came from and are surprized that it's from Layla...people just love the song..and I tell them I sing it as a tribute to Bobby...he's one of the biggest music stars of his time..a true musical genius...
Just to clarify, Bobby had to have seen Duane after the Layla sessions ended because Duane played with the Dominoes twice when they were on tour - once in Tampa(?) and once in Syracuse, NY (I was at this show.) Duane died roughly a year after the Layla sessions ended.
Cool Cat... I love that new painting too! These videos are great and I'm really enjoying hearing true stories about all these amazing people. Some have been musical hero's of mine for over 50 years now. I hope you guys have a great night.. Keep safe 🎶🎶✨
Beautiful painting. You should do a book of your paintings. I have three copies of Paul McCartneys painting book. I wish I could give you a copy. You and Coco have given me and the world such love and laughter. Have a great Sunday and look forward to more videos.
I bought the Derek & the Dominos Layla 33 1/3 album & a juke box 45 of Tell The Truth/Let Rain. The 45 seemed faster than the album, so I played the 45 at 33 1/3 speed. It sounded like it is the same take as the album. So I played the album at 45, & bingo. These two songs work at either speed, on both formats. Both these songs, (Tell the Truth & Let it Rain, ATCO 1970), were on my ATCO original LP. My friends had Tell The Truth/Roll it Over 45s, Atco Records 1970. Interesting stuff.
Weed for creativity, nothing wrong with that and a nice jam, Except for the time 40 years ago when I played Johnny B good in the Key of B instead of C in front of a crowd....ouch. Blow and jamming, could not see that. Great humor Bobby!! love it! Oh that Little Martha is golden! What I think fans would love is a listening to a song with Bobby as he explains a song (without getting a YT strike). FYI:: I just bought Raw Velvet vinyl, and so excited to have it.
I saw Clapton talking on the just released Bee Gees movie / doco. I bought and loved Layla ( and the 60s Clapton ) and same the with Saturday Night Fever and early Bee Gees. There's plenty of musical snobbery around ! Even as I was leaving the movie theatre a guy was saying in a loud voice " well of course i was really into Led Zep back in those days ' :)
I wonder if Bobby ever had any contact with Lonnie Mack, who had a big influence on Duane Jeff Beck and of course Stevie Ray Vaughn. I'd assume on Eric Clapton too. I was friends with Lonnie and I loved his playing and his personality. He had some great road stories about lots of 60s and 70s rock and roll stars
one of the most epic recording in rock history i wish they wouldve kept goiing its great hearing Bobby share his experience i had to pull out lalya and sip it like a fine congac cv
...the whole"peach" thing began with a radio interview...Duane was asked what he was going to do when he got home to Georgia...he said "i'm gonna eat a peach"....
Omg we should all be so grateful we survived all those years of using & abusing mass quantities of sleep repellent. For me it was the early to late 80’s. Left it behind 36 yrs ago & never looked back.Life is good
I read before that Duane did do one or two live shows with the Derek & the Dominos . How did that feeling created in the studio transfer out in front of an audience? Is that why Duane did it , out of musical curiosity in seeing if that energy that was present in the studio would show up on stage ? It seems to me that is a question that someone who had been involved in such an epic recording would want to know, and would not be satisfied until they had found for themselves , would it be the same live . Was the reason he only did one or two shows , because of the realization that the energy on that album was a one time single expenditure of power that had been released and trying to recapture it was just going to be a fruitless enterprise no matter how many times it was tried ? Thank goodness it was recorded for the ages . And thank goodness for your insightful and entertaining talks, Bobby & CoCo . Keep'em coming ya'll !
Please understand respectfully about the naming of one of history's most important albums. EAT A PEACH means " for peace " DUANE liked Georgia peaches....the fruit....AND the two legged kind ! THE KIND THEY GROW IN GEORGIA ! He swerved to avoid a stalled lumber truck. PHIL was all business for sure. But the album was titled out of respect for ole DUANE ! GREAT CHANNEL ! you two are awesome.
Duane loved his "Vitamin C" as he put it. Peruvian marching powder. I know the photo you're talking about, Duane looks pretty toasty with a cigarette or joint in his mouth.
Hello from Rocky Top, I think it is great that you played with Duane Allman. There is a lot of people that would like to be able to say that and can't! He didn't live long enough for it to occur ☮️
Funny stuff "Falling Stars" a true addict never runs out...according to Gregg from his book...the ABB or he & Duane owed the recording studio or whoever (in LA) 50K and so he stayed doing commercial jingles to work the debt off. Knowing it would come back to haunt them or the band later. It took him 6 months or so. He had financial ethics that perhaps the other might have said F*** It to or something to that extent. Another great shirt and why or how don't you have any hair on your arms but have such a great beard? Does it come with the territory? Inquiring minds want to know, haha! I mean all of this in the best most positive way. Kind Regards, 👍 🙏 Maximum Respect, and Peace ~ Loo 👊 😎
These are wonderful stories and I really love hearing them! My one issue would be that there is a mic placement and/or EQ problem with Bobby's voice. Coco's is fine, clear as a bell, but I think there may be too much hard bounce off the glass table top for Bobby, as when I listen there is a slight distorted loudness that is muffling, if that makes sense. I couldn't EQ it out.
Duane said in a radio interview when asked about what he’d do for the resistance (or movement or whatever) and he said he “eats a peach for peace every time I’m in Georgia”. I think that’s where the line came from for the title. It was something Duane had said. The truck he ran into with his motorcycle was a flatbed truck too. The peach truck was an awful myth. I would’ve loved to have heard what Duane did next. He planned on adding horns to the Allmans. They definitely fell apart without him. I loved the book his daughter wrote called Please Be with Me. I’ll mail you my copy if you like.
@David Taber by the band members own words, they were lost without Duane leading that band. His brother became a full blown junkie, Gregg turned witness and the band vowed never to work with him again (and he was with Cher making that album). They were all talented players, but they needed a leader once he was gone. They still made some great music, but they peaked with Duane in ‘71. Chart success doesn’t mean much at all compared to greatness and making history. I’m not saying they didn’t having bigger sales after he died, I’m saying that they tore it all apart without him as the center and the heart of the thing. You can disagree, but that doesn’t mean I’m wrong for thinking so. The fact that they carried on was commendable, but Berry destroyed himself after Duane died. I think comparing the band in ‘70-‘71 to what they’d become just 5 or so years later without Duane proves my point. Success, drugs and ego destroyed a lot of the creativity in that band. I’ll leave it at that. I realize that this is the internet and many people post opinions to piss people off, but that wasn’t my intention. I don’t mind having a dialog about music that I love and respect though.
bobby listening to all these interviews with you has made me pull out my layla album and look at all those pics inside the double album cover, and my question is who is the girl in the picture on the bottom right hand next to duanne?
Damn, Man, just when I’d chosen a favorite episode/installment... you go and make a better one - one that just grabs you by the fucking throat!! I am so in awe of your experiences - TRANSPLENDENT!
Hello Bobby, Hello Coco, I have been binging on your channel for four days, such a trove of information, I have to get that 50 anniversary record !!!( I got the 20 anniversary). Was Bobby around 461 Ocean bvld? Best regards from France, keep safe.
Come on guys! The idea that Duane Allman smashed into a peach truck is UTTER NONSENSE and has been reputably debunked MANY times. I am shocked that a person with so much knowledge about Duane would repeat such nonsense. It was in fact a building supply truck that was there, but most people think Duane never even hit it. He was going too fast on a downhill portion of the road as he approached the intersection and the bike jumped up and off the road. Furthermore, Duane had just gotten out of rehab in Buffalo a few days before, and had come from an early evening pumpkin carving event at the band's Big House in Macon GA when it happened. He was not wasted at that moment, as was implied. Also, Duane's death happened on October 29, 1971, over a year after the recording of the Layla album wrapped up. And Gregg was living in Hollywood in early 1969, not 1971. He was right in Macon when Duane died. And Gregg went back to California years after Duane's death, when he was married to Cher. If anybody cares, there are several excellent books written about Duane that discuss all this in great detail. But I do love and appreciate all the tales Bobby tells. Thanks.
Question. I was in Memphis working as a staff songwriter for Dan Penn & Eddie Braddock. Was Eddie your manager at some point there and do you have any stories about them or Beautiful Sounds Recording Studio that they co-owned? I was there 69-71.
Bobby...some of your shirts are awesome, but this one is my favorite. Love me some older ABB, but I understand you being tired of it. The shirt beats it all anyway brother!!
10:2918:16 So as we all know now, Duane ran into a truck carrying a wrecking ball, but the peach truck thing was the rumor for the longest time. Sad day and everyone our age knows where they were when they heard the news. It was one of those things. IMO the Alman band was never as good after cause everyone in Florida had seen them a bunch of times over the years often for free at some rec center or park, so you could tell.
I wouldn't sweat it too much about the experimentation with drugs. I think we all know you guys were partying. I would of too! It can be a sort of beautiful thing if you can control it...
That would be great if they did get together but I doubt it will ever happen, which is a real shame.. I think Eric has firmly closed the door on certain parts of his past.. perhaps because the Layla album was the start of the heavy drugs, and his passion for Pattie.. all of which came to an end years later in a big mess for him... It's like he doesn't want to remember. Who knows??!! In saying that, he did play "I am yours" & "anyday" about 15 years ago when he had Derek Trucks in his band... Plus he plays "Got to get better in a little while" quite often... Anyhow, I really don't know anything about anything so it's all just my imagination. I do wonder if Eric is watching these interviews sitting at Hurtwood whilst the UK is in Lockdown... A very different type of lockdown than his self imposed one back in the day.... And thinking to himself..."man that was a great band, they were great musicians...I really should get in touch with Bobby" We can but dream. God bless.
@@BW-CC you are so good with the conversational technique in your approach, you really excel in this. But maybe one day CoCo-maybe one day a few moments of you-you both are joy givers and smile makers on my TH-cam❤️
He’s talking about Layla only it recorded during a late night session and they were high at the time. It does go out of tune later in the song but Tom Dowd told them he would fix it later. It’s a brilliant song and I love the interplay between Eric and Duane . So its never bothered me I use to just crank it up and groove to it. Layla wasn’t necessarily my favorite song there were some many great songs on it Thorn Tree in the Garden was a favorite of mine its a pretty song.

Thorntree was the perfect ending!
Love the history thanks for posting. Listened to the album twice this week
Cat cameo. The Eat a Peach thing never occured to me.
Another great story & looking sharp as ever. Would love to know where Bobby get's his clothes. Always just killer shirts!
Thank you , All over the place
Please understand respectfully about the naming of one of history's most important albums. EAT A PEACH means " for peace " DUANE liked Georgia peaches....the fruit....AND the two legged kind ! THE KIND THEY GROW IN GEORGIA !
He swerved to avoid a stalled lumber truck. PHIL was all business for sure. But the album was titled out of respect for ole DUANE !
GREAT CHANNEL ! you two are awesome.
Absolutely. Bobby and Duane were friends don't forget.
"Eat A Peach" is slang for cunnilingus. I always thought it was supposed to be a joke of some kind to name the album that.
Can B.W. play with the Allman Bros. Band?
@@ronfrey5327 ABSOLUTELY! My favorite music to listen to and to learn to play. Kind Regards, 👍 🙏 Maximum Respect, and Peace ~ Loo 👊 😎
These are wonderful stories and I really love hearing them! My one issue would be that there is a mic placement and/or EQ problem with Bobby's
voice. Coco's is fine, clear as a bell, but I think there may be too much hard bounce off the glass table top for Bobby, as when I listen there is a slight distorted loudness that is muffling, if that makes sense. I couldn't EQ it out.
Oya should do more of these clips with you two!
Fell apart???? Ya right.
Was a double album the goal when they first went into the studio
bobby listening to all these interviews with you has made me pull out my layla album and look at all those pics inside the double album cover, and my question is who is the girl in the picture on the bottom right hand next to duanne?
Kay Poorboy
Damn, Man, just when I’d chosen a favorite episode/installment... you go and make a better one - one that just grabs you by the fucking throat!! I am so in awe of your experiences - TRANSPLENDENT!
Hello Bobby, Hello Coco,
I have been binging on your channel for four days, such a trove of information, I have to get that 50 anniversary record !!!( I got the 20 anniversary). Was Bobby around 461 Ocean bvld? Best regards from France, keep safe.
Salut Bernard, non
Didn’t Duane sit in at a couple of Domino shows?
Yes
Bobby...some of your shirts are awesome, but this one is my favorite. Love me some older ABB, but I understand you being tired of it. The shirt beats it all anyway brother!!
10:29 18:16 So as we all know now, Duane ran into a truck carrying a wrecking ball, but the peach truck thing was the rumor for the longest time. Sad day and everyone our age knows where they were when they heard the news. It was one of those things. IMO the Alman band was never as good after cause everyone in Florida had seen them a bunch of times over the years often for free at some rec center or park, so you could tell.
T~hats a great laugh at 2mins 30 secs
Love the cat!
TS&D, tootin,smokin,and drinkin.
Thoroughly enjoying the videos.
Not exactly how Duane's accident happened.
No peach truck involved.
We did find that out, after posting.
I wouldn't sweat it too much about the experimentation with drugs. I think we all know you guys were partying. I would of too! It can be a sort of beautiful thing if you can control it...
So...when are we going to get Bobby and Eric BOTH to sit at the table and pass around stories?
Probably never
@@BW-CC Ditto 👊
And thinking to himself..."man that was a great band, they were great musicians...I really should get in touch with Bobby"
We can but dream.
God bless.
Maybe you could post a video of how to play Thorn Tree. ?
We did,
Although I’ve watched many of these videos, I haven’t seen it. And, after I sent the message, I wondered if it had already been done.
@@johnmcbarron7282 is the Thorn Tree in the Garden video, although I don't recall him actually showing how to play it.
👍😎❤🖖
Love folks
❤️Miss CoCo let’s have BW interview YOU one time❤️ another Sister CC here
Hey Cindy, I'm not into quite honestly. But I do appreciate it. Loving ❤ thoughts beautiful lady.
@@BW-CC you are so good with the conversational technique in your approach, you really excel in this. But maybe one day CoCo-maybe one day a few moments of you-you both are joy givers and smile makers on my TH-cam❤️
The Duane out of tune issue...are you referring to one song or more?
He’s talking about Layla only it recorded during a late night session and they were high at the time. It does go out of tune later in the song but Tom Dowd told them he would fix it later. It’s a brilliant song and I love the interplay between Eric and Duane . So its never bothered me I use to just crank it up and groove to it. Layla wasn’t necessarily my favorite song there were some many great songs on it Thorn Tree in the Garden was a favorite of mine its a pretty song.
bye gatito
But it's actually very cool that it's out of tune.
I don't know why the out of tune solo on the coda works- it defies theory.
But it does.
The singer sang out of tune, but it's OK with me, really. CC
Amazing stuff!
