The reason why you don’t hear groups covering Bee Gees music is that NO ONE can match their harmonies and falsetto. The genius of Bruce Springsteen is that he knows this and is smart enough not to even try. He uses his creativity and puts his own spin on the song and pays homage to The Bee Gees with a beautifully unique rendition of Staying Alive, absolute genius!!!
Well observed..And that's thing with 'covers' either the piece of music has to be performed perfectly the same(which is o/k,but ur not really learning anything new),or a artist has to put their own fingerprint on it!..
That's exactly what I said. I saw him cover Purple Rain once and I've learned he's very good at knowing what his limitations are. When it came time to do the guitar solo, he turned it over to his guitarist. He can play guitar, he can't play like Prince can. He can sing okay, He can't sing like Barry. He's learned to take the song and make it his own within what he can do.
Totally agree with your take on this. Being a Bee Gees fan I was just thrilled the crowd went wild when he began to sing, knowing the song and, in a Rock n' Roll setting, dove into the energy of it. I love how you stated that he was smart enough to not even try to match the original vocal formula yet maintained an honor to the Bee Gees in this rendition. I loved it!
You don´t hear groups covering Bee Gees? 😮I think very few groups in history have been covered as much as The Bee Gees. Take songs like Words, To Love Somebody, Morning of My Life, How Deep Is Your Love etc. and you will find hundreds of cover versions by great artists. However, I do agree to Bee Gees harmonies and vocals was something truly great. Bruce Springsteen is a great entertainer and I would love to see him live one day!
Without a doubt this is one of the greatest covers of any song I’ve ever heard , the fact that it is live and the arrangement with the band is absolutely unreal
Agreed. This is so different, I don't even compare it to the Bee Gees. The middle section with all the brass gets a bit loud for my tastes, but it's a very good stab at a different take on an iconic disco track.
In a strange way, Springsteen's version better captures the essence of the lyrics, which are actually all about desperation and adversity. It's a shame most can't look past the Bee Gees big hair and 70s garb and see the song's original intentions. But all credit to The Boss for giving this song this new life.
Luc Knight It’s not getting past anything. It’s just I could never make out the lyrics until now. Also, I wish Tom Morello would cut those guitar strings. They keep distracting me. All I keep thinking is someone’s gonna lose an eye.
So true. I just found this now, and was blown away. I avoided disco back in the day, and have not really been a fan of Springsteen since around 1980. But here, Bruce transformed it into a masterpiece. The full rock ensemble backed by horns, strings, and soul singers makes it sublime. I'd say he not only gave the song "new life," he also gave it a much better life, and maybe a more meaningful one.
I saw a documentary on them, had NO idea their legacy as writers and producers, truly brilliant. Put them and Bruce together, even unintentionally, WOW, this is the magic that happens
This is the most extraodinary cover of a song by the BeeGees I have ever heard. It would have been a number 1 if released as a single on the charts. Only the Boss could come up with this work of genius.
This is a great great cover from one of the best there ever will be. That being said I just listened to Axxis a metal band that does a KILLER cover of this song also!
How on earth have I not heard this before!? Amazing performance. The boss truly owned this iconic disco classic. The brass section is simply out of this world.
Some context to the song: This was the opening number in the show and was a tribute to the Bee Gees who grew up in Brisbane, about 10 min away from the venue. The strings were on stage because he later played the entire album "The Wild, the Innocent & The E Street Shuffle" and used them for New York City Serenade (which was easily the highlight of the show for me). A special show.
I was there. Greatest show ever. In the wild woods of Brisbane catching the last train back to the empty Thursday night city after an almost 4 hour show...
That would have been beyond amazing. What a brilliant idea. Bruce is not only a great song writer but he's also incredibly talented at arranging and this rendition of a disco classic is a great example. How he uses the strings, horns, back-up vocals and dynamics add punch. His vocal fade at the end then...bam!...forte of strings. Spine-tingling.
At it's purest, this is a song about the crying desperation and cry for *help* from the main character (both in the film and in this performance). This is one of the best performances of any song. It pays respect to the original artists, highlights the pathos of life for Tony in that era, redefines the theatrical nature of the original piece, and then adds jazz, blues and rock and roll highlights. Wow.
Been listening to this nonstop after I found it ... back in 2024! incredible cover and what a musical joy. You truly feel how The Boss loves music and owns it, even if it is an iconic disco classic like Stayin' Alive!. Simply wonderful. Thank you!
I wouldn't mind at all if Bruce did a full album with only coversongs, the versions he makes are usually so incredibly good that they really deserve to be on record..
Haha: that's another thing I love about him: he never seemed to mind people taping his shows: so I'm pretty sure a compilation tspe of him doing covers could be made. Heck, I'd buy that album, too...

This is called “making it yours”. Anyone trying to duplicate the wondrous harmonies and falsettos of The Bee Gees would be foolish. This is why he is, and always will be “The Boss”!
@@pkdick1 Nope, it just gives it a different slant. And the crowd going wild the moment he began to sing it before the rock chords came into play, proves the song has dug its heels in and many across the boards love it.
Extraordinary to think that this rocking number is the first song of the show. Its the sort of performance a lesser band might reserve for the climax, to go out on a high, but Springsteen was just getting started for the night.
this is unfriggin believable! I wonder what Robin, Barry and Maurice would think. I know they would be boogieing with everyone else. This man is the best rock and roller by far. Sorry stones, and everyone else. NOBODY DOES IT LIKE THE BOSS!
Pretty sure they would like it with all that musicianship going on there. Wild to put that funky early 70s blaxploitation movie sound effect 1:27 with violins and horns! The Bee Gees's original doesn't have that. Great stuff.
What makes Bruce Springsteen even better than he is lies in the fact that he's not afraid to tackle anything!!! No one touches the Bee Gees but he gives it a go and it's great. Only man in the world that can make a cover to be better than the original version. It happens the same with Dream baby Dream or Don't Change (INXS). Simply the Boss.
Obviously I enjoyed the Bee Gees original. But Bruce's arrangement draws out a meaning I had not previously appreciated mainly because of the mixed down lyrics o the original. This version makes sense.
this is like a wonderful girl in a beautiful new dress. the song is the beautiful girl, and Bruce just gave her a new beautiful dress. Thanks Gibb (and thanks Bruce for the new and modern outfit)!
I have developed a habit. When I have a bad day I listen to THIS and somehow things don't feel as bad. I feel like staying alive. Bruce is often to magic in my life...Music, Music.... listen to music.
Man, I didn’t think anybody else could do a cover version of “Stayin’ Alive” by The Bee Gees and do a halfway decent job. Then I start watching this video of Bruce Springsteen, and he sang it like he had written it in the first place. Robin and Maurice Gibb are smiling down from heaven. Barry Gibb needs to check it out, then thank the Boss for turning this disco classic into a New Jersey rock anthem. Wow!
Was at this concert. Best night ever. Didn’t think it was possible but he just keeps getting better. They did The Wild The Innocent Album all the way through. Never thought I’d ever get to see that. Etched in my memory FOR EVER!!!
Love it or hate it, doesn't matter. I love Bruce for trying new and different things from his own stuff which is brilliant. Sometimes he nails the covers, sometimes not. Who cares, everyone's a critic. I'd be happy with a millionth of that talent.
the power in this version of that song is just magnetic...he transforms a disco-era piece into a raw rock'n roll performance. Bruce is one the best performers that ever existed.
An astonishing performance, and arrangement. The backing vocals and harmonies are heavenly, the trumpet inspired. The song has a meaning I never found in the original.
Boy, you got that right. Heard this for the first time a week ago. Couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to it. He has completely transformed this song for me, after all these years. Musical magic.
No matter what stage he steps in, his guitar signature is so legendary that everyone can easily recognize him even without seeing him. Guess who I mentioned?
Wow! We need this song more then ever now! Stay safe stay well 😷 Wear your mask! I love Bruce's version of this incredible Bee Gees song!! Thank -You Bruce and The E Street Band!! 🥰🇺🇲💗☮️🙏🥰🎉🎤🎵
This is one of the best cover song and musical arrange I hear in a long time. The boss is the boss. Not sure why people refer to the Bee Gees music as disco. This is R/B at his best...
It is SO super-classy for perhaps the most American rocker to cover the works of the Bee Gees and INXS when visiting Australia. And what a great arrangement it is.
Initially, I'm like this is a great cover. Then the horns and solos burst now it's heavenly status. Smartly done, Bruce n' Co. This is the dopest cover I've heard of any tune in quite a few years.
One of the best ever Bruce covers and he's done a few but always with his stamp but never losing the integrity of the original. The Boss one of the best of all time.
Awesome tribute to Bee Gees. For many who are unaware of this findada band in 1958 and went through all musical styles being a true music legends, now played by Bruce masterfully. Excellent musicians. Thank you.
I downloaded this entire show just a few days after the actual show back in 2014 and I still think it is one of the greatest concerts Bruce, or anyone, has ever played. An incredible setlist, including the entire Wild, Innocent, E Street Shuffle album, and a host of rarely played songs. A show that starts with a cover of a 1978 BeeGees classic and ends with a cover of a 1978 AC/DC classic is a absolutely incredible journey...
Well I’m surprised, I like how Bruce covered this. I never imagined Staying Alive without the high voices. 😮 This is an example of a very talented guy who could sing the phone book and have a hit song. I’m impressed.

Obviously I enjoyed the Bee Gees original. But Bruce's arrangement draws out a meaning I had not previously appreciated mainly because of the mixed down lyrics o the original. This version makes sense.
That's right up there with all the coolest things I've ever seen.
My favorite Springsteen cover he has ever done. Impeccable.
this is like a wonderful girl in a beautiful new dress.
the song is the beautiful girl, and Bruce just gave her a new beautiful dress.
Thanks Gibb (and thanks Bruce for the new and modern outfit)!
The Bee Gees were , are and will be a phenomenon.
I could listen to this a million times in a row!!!!!!!!
I love Bruce's respect for the artist he covers, a true professional. ...
I just did. :o)
Mike Olson cant stop playing this classic!
I have developed a habit. When I have a bad day I listen to THIS and somehow things don't feel as bad. I feel like staying alive. Bruce is often to magic in my life...Music, Music.... listen to music.
Bruce is a master band leader...others cover songs, Bruce makes it his own. His arrangement is fabulous!
Wow!
Barry covered "I'm on Fire" that year as an acknowledgement.
@@rogerwhittemore9950ciao Roger! 🙋♀️😍😘💘🌅
I'm a very bee gees' fan, and i love this version! I'll never be tired of listening to it!!
You are right... but I think he always nails the covers... example of what a garage/jam band does... they arent exact but who cares!
the power in this version of that song is just magnetic...he transforms a disco-era piece into a raw rock'n roll performance. Bruce is one the best performers that ever existed.
God damn Bruce. That was just fantastic!
Wow! The Boss, we salute you for gracing the art of music. 🙏
Bruce please play this song when you come to LA! I love your music and would love to see it in person on March 17....
An astonishing performance, and arrangement. The backing vocals and harmonies are heavenly, the trumpet inspired. The song has a meaning I never found in the original.
Amazing how a great cover/interpretation sheds new light on what was previously understood.
i can't stop listening
6 years later I'm still here. Can't stop
This is such a great version of the song. Actually, at this concert, he did some covers I thought were just incredible.
You got that right. Stone Cold Jam....
Boy, you got that right. Heard this for the first time a week ago. Couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to it. He has completely transformed this song for me, after all these years. Musical magic.
@@cantbethree check out The Ghost of Tom Had live with Tom Morello. Exhausting. Fantastic. Special.
No matter what stage he steps in, his guitar signature is so legendary that everyone can easily recognize him even without seeing him. Guess who I mentioned?
The Bee Gees have world class music in their legacy like Bruce. Beautiful boss, beautiful!
Wow! We need this song more then ever now! Stay safe stay well 😷 Wear your mask! I love Bruce's version of this incredible Bee Gees song!! Thank -You Bruce and The E Street Band!! 🥰🇺🇲💗☮️🙏🥰🎉🎤🎵
This may be the coolest man who ever lived!!!!
I could listen to this a million times in a row!!!!!!!!
Australia waited a long, long time for Bruce. When he got there he gave them one hell of a show. Props to you Bruce!
He covered the Saints “just like fire would” in Melbourne
Great song, great cover, great Bruce Springsteen, great Bee Gees
This is one of the best cover song and musical arrange I hear in a long time. The boss is the boss.
Not sure why people refer to the Bee Gees music as disco. This is R/B at his best...
it's the great Bruce mother fucking Springsteen.
It is SO super-classy for perhaps the most American rocker to cover the works of the Bee Gees and INXS when visiting Australia. And what a great arrangement it is.
That is just seriously mind-blowing.
Initially, I'm like this is a great cover. Then the horns and solos burst now it's heavenly status. Smartly done, Bruce n' Co. This is the dopest cover I've heard of any tune in quite a few years.
This sounds so reinstating of the Bee Gees disco legacy, on a different level, that I can't help feeling touched with gratitude.
Thank you.
This is how you should cover a superfamous track. Great homage to the Bee Gees.
I have been in love with Bruce since I was 15....he is The Boss😍
Why can't I hit like everytime I see this... Coz I'm watching it everyday. So in love with this 😍
I downloaded this entire show just a few days after the actual show back in 2014 and I still think it is one of the greatest concerts Bruce, or anyone, has ever played. An incredible setlist, including the entire Wild, Innocent, E Street Shuffle album, and a host of rarely played songs. A show that starts with a cover of a 1978 BeeGees classic and ends with a cover of a 1978 AC/DC classic is a absolutely incredible journey...
Where do I find the concert?
Was lucky enough to be there .... did the roll call and was close to the front of the pit. Simply the best show I've ever been to.
This IS LEGENDARY! ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS AND A LEGEND SINGING THEIR HITS! DAMN! #TheBoss #TheBeeGees 🙌🙏💜
Only Bruce could do that - and he did. Amazing! Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil.
Woww.. It's hard difficult to make a Rock version of this song.. But you are The Boss... Great performing
Love U Bruce ❤️🔥🤘🇺🇲
Holy crap, this is the first time I heard this version other than BeeGees and the Boss killed it. Wow~
Well I’m surprised, I like how Bruce covered this. I never imagined Staying Alive without the high voices. 😮 This is an example of a very talented guy who could sing the phone book and have a hit song. I’m impressed.
This is the greatest remake in the history of the known universe!!!!
Best cover of legendary song🕺🕺🕺
