Great instruction as usual, Tanner. That’s the best explanation of the Tyson McGuffin serve I’ve ever seen. You’re the first one who has bothered to explain the mechanics, and especially the grip technique. Thanks!
@@justinlee7748 I think this is called the western grip. It’s also referred to as the pancake or frying pan grip. Riley Newman uses it a lot at the net.
As a lefty, I love watching your instruction, as I do not have to think in reverse watching a right handed demonstration. Love the videos. Keep them coming Tanner!
Tanner… thank you so much. The unsheathing tip helped so much. I usually spray my serves everywhere and mostly out. Really appreciate it. My consistency/ power/ accuracy went way up
Hey Tanner, I tried your new serve tonight . . what a bomb!! my serve went from 4.0 to 6.0 in 5 minutes! Of course, I need more practice, but the force and spin are unreal.
Tanner. . . great pointers. This is very similar to a Jack Sock forehand. Coils the waist and pushes off the back foot to create that monster shot. thanks!!
TY Tanner. I tried the McMuffin serve a while ago and it was a big improvement. This video does a great job of taking apart the components of it in a way that makes it easier to understand why it's so good and how to make it consistent.
Love your videos and the way you clearly break the movements down, I have used many of your tips and suggestions and definitely have seen improvements in my game. Out of curiosity, have you ever gotten actual mph speed readings on the difference between the old and new way of serving? Look forward to many more videos!
I watched your video yesterday morning then went out and tried it yesterday afternoon. It worked so well right off the bat! At first I kept my regular grip and loved it. Then I tried switching my grip like you suggested and I got more speed and topsin, but I missed more serves low into the net. The original grip put a nice sidespin on the ball for another option. I'm a little hesitant to use the new grip because it's not as consistent, but I'll keep practicing with it and see what happens. Thanks for another great video, Tanner.
Hey Tanner watched one of your singles matches in Arizona, really enjoyed it. I was fortunate to win Silver w my partner in Men's 4.5, 50+. What a great experience! I will try your serve recommendations as appears to really make sense. As to Ping-Pong, I rarely ever lose so would be awesome to have a friendly game some day. See you in S FL tournaments!
I'm still using a bounce serve with brush topspin applied to the top of the ball. At 6'4" I get enough height on the bounce that this isn't a huge liability in generated pace. Before I saw this video, I had no desire to convert to a volley serve. But this actually looks like a technique worth the bother to learn. My brush topspin generates reasonably decent pace. What makes it work is that it is less familiar to most opponents, and the amount of topspin applied is almost impossible to read at paddle contact. Small differences in whip and timing make a 2x difference in the topspin that results. The resulting uncertainty is just enough to make the opponents hesitate before ball contact, and become less than thrilled about trying to run through it. But obviously, my bounce serve could only become a limitation much above the 4.5 level. It does generate less pace, and finally that will become limiting.
@@tanner.pickleball I tried. The grip is my only issue. I use back the slightly eastern grip. the power is almost the same as my old serve. (maybe haven't fully master yet) and didn't really go deep to the backcourt. However, it offers me to be more static after the serve and faster to prepare for the 3rd shot. I will try again in my next session. Thanks. At least I know a new technique of serve.
Question regarding where your hips should face: You were on the right side serving to the left side, and you’re loading your left leg since you’re left handed. Now when you are serving from the left side, where should your hips face, the right post or left post still?
Congratulations on your first Pro Bronze Medal! I see many local players serving like your old way, I think I am going to see your new ways soon on local courts. :)
@@tanner.pickleball I did try the new way of serving. I like both the old way and the new way. Need to mix it up when serving. Effective against different types of opponents.
I suppose that when you serve like this and get a weak 2nd shot return, your 3rd shot could be set up to do the same motion as the serve, especially if the returner has not yet made it to the kitchen line.
I use a continental grip for my forehand drive and drops. Do I switch it back to continental after the serve?Or practice with this new grip for 3rd shot drives and drops? Also I’m curious if Quong Dong use this grip for his 3rd shot drops. Thanks!
Funny enough, Quong uses this grip for ALL of his shots. I would recommend only using this grip for the serve, and drive. Other than that, I would use my normal continental grip if I were you!
Thanks for everything Tanner and congrats on your bronze! I have been serving using your old serve technique for a few months. However, with this new technique, I'm having trouble getting the ball over the net because the grip you recommend necessitates a fully closed paddle face when making contact (if I'm correct, the paddle face is almost parallel with the ground when making contact). How are you able to get it consistently over the net? Exaggerated wrist motion for more top spin?
will this work with a drop serve-I can't quite master serving from the hand, unless you have a suggestion on how I can learn to serve from the hand-thanks
Interesting video. I went ahead and subscribed. :) …and yes, I could definitely beat you in table tennis…:) …next time you’re in Austin, look me up if you feel lucky.
How do you explain that both Quang Duong and Federico Staksrud step inside the court after the serve motion follow through? Both Quang and Federico are two of the best servers on the PPA tour.
@@tanner.pickleball They do not, if you watch this match between Federico vs. Quang: th-cam.com/video/5YBVJvfv7vA/w-d-xo.html. I wish I would have shown that grip as a lefty. I am lefty. This is one of the reasons I follow you. Do u switch bach to the semi eastern or stay with the grip you serve with?
Wait, I thought you need to serve and stay. The return needs to bounce right, so what good is to immediately run to the kitchen line after striking your serve?
The foot only needs to touch the ground at the point of contact, right? You could still jump, just “after” you’ve initiated contact with the ball? Seems unlikely that you’d strike the ball after both feet are off the ground anyway.
I tried this open stance serve today and did not like it. Found it hard to control direction and trajectory. Current serve is closed like your old serve where I step all the way through the ball, only I stand about 3' off the line. I also use a western grip on my serve. Worth a try but did not work for me. 😞
Hey Grain! Make sure you are getting UNDER the ball. If you don't exaggerate that, your ball will go into the bottom of the net! Once you figure this out, the amount of spin is next level.

@wolf-xf6hf The correct title for the sport in the UK and most of the rest of the world is "table tennis". This is because "ping pong" is a trade mark, number 233177, registered by the London toy importers and manufacturers Hamley Brothers on 20 September 1900 for their version of table tennis manufactured by John Jaques & Son. Most people who take the sport seriously, such as training and playing competitions, will use the term “Table Tennis”.
