What comes to mind when we think of the Tudor court? Splendor, drama, power? Artists like Hans Holbein and Nicholas Hilliard have indelibly shaped our image of this tumultuous time. During this conversation, hear from a scholar whose recent discoveries in British archives have transformed our understanding of these artists and their royal sitters.

English monarchs for hundred of years moved all over the country - it was normal which is why they had so many palaces strategically placed. It was not unique to Elizabeth - her father Henry VIII not only had dozens of palaces but used the richer monasteries which had 'royal apartments' as hotels and the regional homes of the wealthier aristocrats. The monarchy was not London based as it has been in recent history. Indeed in earlier centuries our Kings live more in France than in England!

That was really wonderful, I felt so immersed in the world of Hilliard and Dudley, and more. Fortunately, I have been able to see the exhibit.

Wonderful presentation. It was a revival of my visits to Hampton Court two decades ago. Greetings from Peru

Great interview. I have read quite a lot about the Tudors and court favorites but nothing mentioned Robert Dudley’s art patronage. Beautiful, opulent exhibit.

Please tell me the name of the opening painting in your video? It is an oval portrait with a blue background. It seems to completely disappear after seconds. What is the significance of the painting and name of the painter? Why does it completely disappear and become unfindable even scrolling to the opening of the video? Why can one not find it, scrolling backward or forward or in the video at all? Thank-you.
