The beauty of this song is, there's no point debating what you think it's about because i guarantee it effects everyone differently, and brings different feelings to each person. I can also bet each person listening to this song has a specific verse they love most. You don't know what you have in this cruel world until you know it's gone, so appreciate the beauty.
This song entered my life in first year university and I was not a pot smoker and this song in that time in my life still solved all of life's questions. Thank you Equalizer for keeping me well in 2000.
it's about that bohemian girlfriend you had when you were young who made you love life more than you thought possible. But then you figured it was time to get your life together and you broke up with her and stopped smoking and went and became a dentist or whatever only to realize that you're 50 years old now still thinking about that day in your youth where you decided to turn your back on pure happiness
Loved this song for a long time. God bless whoever started posting it on youtube. I could never find an official version, but this is just so beautiful as is.
I first heard it in the early 2000’s on livejournal. The version of the story I got was that the band broke up in the middle of recording their first album and copyright issues were not resolved. One of the sound techs thought it was a travesty that it could not be released and it sort of fell out of the back of the internet. I did years later see an album in a record store that was a solo album by (I think) the lead singer whose name I of course do not remember and it did have a version of this song on it.
Sitting Back outside at 1 in the morning to a clear sky, Nobody around, No Noise, Jus quiet, Smoking a few Joints, Listing to this song, laying back in a lawn chair staring at the sky puffing on a fatty....i honestly cant see any better way to spend a night.
My university roomate went to highschool with Equalizer's bass player and lead singer(they're brothers) at Lower Canada College and he told me that the song is CERTAINLY about weed and JA stands for Jasper Alberta (Mountain Town)
I knew Steve In the fall of 2003. This was his "One Hit Wonder" back in the 70's, and yes it was "Sweet Mary Jane". "When I knew Steve we used to call him "Stove Top Stove Top Steve" do to the fack that all he ever wanted to eat was Stove Top Stuffing and watch reruns of the Andy Griffith Shoe on TV Land....
I memorized every lyric to this song at 17, I'm 34 now, and basically based every decision I have ever made off these lyrics....I don't know if it'll work out, but i know where the mangoes grow
People just listen to the music take it for what you interpret don't force your opinion on each other. The music is beautiful as are the lyrics just listen and enjoy.
@losermonster Equalizer is a band hailing from my hometown of Montreal, Canada. Sweet Mary is the only song of its kind that they do, they are essentially a reggae band made up of some jewish kids that went to my old school. They broke up a while ago and the lead, Chris Velan, went on to start a solo career. Its a shame really, they only got to release one CD. Still my favorite song of all time
It's art... It's music. The artist wrote it about either a girl, or the spice, but deep down, it's about whatever YOU think its about. Nvm arguing about proving it, just enjoy it for all it means to you.
anick langelier hey but a little late to the party but I’m hearing it now it’s G-Cadd9 not C9 that Bb is what’s making it sound weird to G then D Then it changes to Em-Cadd9-G-D Then the boy when you first met me triplet part it’s just G-Cadd9-D and in between verses he’s just riffing from a G to a Cadd9 then lift your ring finger off the 3rd fret B string and let the open play out. That’s the best I can explain it without a guitar in my hands.
and you can smoke two pounds of cali herb by yourself then try to stand on your head no matter how high you get, you'll never forget the wonders of mary's bed my favorite part haha
the only reference to weed in the song is how much you can smoke to try and forget Mary, who is clearly a girl he met in a bar and left behind after a year to travel. Don't be brain dead and think the whole sentiment of the song is a about dope
Both on a subtle level and an obvious level Equalizer makes reference to marijuana, for example the chorus of the tune. You have to remember in 1976 in Jamaica weed could somehow makes its way into just about every conversation . "it was the year of our father 19hundred and 76 in JA, when I first met my Mary quite contrary to what my mother did say" However there are other references that are too humanistic to be references to weed. But 99.99999% of this song is a marijuana reference. To say th
@jennandselena what!?!?! did they get back together. I know a couple of the original members. I thought they broke up in like 2004 and haven't played since.
Well, that's just sad if you fall in love with weed, and then travel half way across the world because it's better than your family and you would rather live out the rest of your life high.
there are way more references to weed than just the chorus.. but no matter how many times you listen to it, you can never figure it out for sure. its a brilliant piece of writing and music.
2023, still listening to this classic.
Still listening in 2020. Brings back so many great memories!
This is such a beautiful song, it’s been forgotten about! Sweet Mary!!!!

True. But Mary's glad she didn't end up with a guy who wasn't willing to make it work. So it's all good. :-)
The last line is the best : You never know what you've got in this cruel world until you realize it's gone.
A cautionary tale. Don't let your insecurities and your mommy issues screw up the best thing you'll ever have.
seriously one of my favorite songs of all times. so beautiful.
This is my one of favourite Love song. This band is from Montreal, Canada.. Actually.
My "sweet Mary" will live on forever in my memories.....

Time just stood still!
I fucking love this song. 16 years and still a fucking tune
Sitting Back outside at 1 in the morning to a clear sky, Nobody around, No Noise, Jus quiet, Smoking a few Joints, Listing to this song, laying back in a lawn chair staring at the sky puffing on a fatty....i honestly cant see any better way to spend a night.

@donboyee Equalizer is Chris Velan's band, him and his brother formed the band in Montreal.
POV: you're a depressed college student in Syracuse New York circa 2001
Came here specifically for this lol
Depressed as hell in Canada at Sault College in 2008! I named my acoustic guitar after this song! Sweet Mary! Still have her!
I memorized every lyric to this song at 17, I'm 34 now, and basically based every decision I have ever made off these lyrics....I don't know if it'll work out, but i know where the mangoes grow
Came here to reminisce, not expecting fresh comments. Pleasantly suprised.
You based every decision.. like you refuse to make this stupid mistakes the protagonist made? Smart choice.
can someone please put this on Spotify!?
3:57 brings a tear to my eyes every time i think about a world without her.
thank you SO much for putting this up

great tune.. one of my faves....
It's funny how so many people are debating whether this song is about weed or a chick. Have you never heard of a metaphor or analogy? It's BOTH.

I just had to comment on this song.
@ruby2brenna do you go to kamp kanawana? we sang it multiple times every summer there

11 trolls don't have a heart, hating this song, what kinda trolls are they?!?!
@tkdmaster01 You my friend, have some great words there :) I love to see THAT in a youtube comment, not often that happens, thanks. :)
love this song!!! FUCKING LOVE IT!
I don't think the name Mary specifically refers to that. The song is about a woman.
There are way too many human qualities he gives "mary" for it to be weed, just listen to the whole video.
😊😊😋
i could never run 2 miles high.... i would die.
Mary = MARIhuana.. That's it, people..
Prop 19.

Pov: you're Ariel Helwani in 2001
Why all these Ariel Comments? :D
@@Bombwife he posted about this Song on twitter
@@barellaz ah okay. Thank you for the answer!
@EmeraldMalfoy1307 grade 9/sec 3.
no this song is about him loving a chick then his chick dies then the rest of the song is about him getting baked basicly :)
Well, that's just sad if you fall in love with weed, and then travel half way across the world because it's better than your family and you would rather live out the rest of your life high.
Your convictions would be better received if your grammar was correct.
