  • Hello and welcome back
    I this video I finally get onto John's mid 1970s 2 door Range Rover.
    My brief is to sort the axles and brakes. Then the car will move onto another specialist for bodywork.
    Enjoy

    When I watch all this, I realise how lucky I was with mine.

      Indeed Andrew, but I understand that yours had been maintained in roadworthy condition over the last 45years or so, was also gifted with a warm climate and lack of salt on the road during winter
      This poor old thing would have been worth less than the shirt on it's owners back a few years back. That any 2 door Range Rover survives in this country is down to folk who just cannot throw them away.
      Under all that mess there is a good car chomping to get out. The start point is far better than the white 1972 car "alan" that I did a few years back. and infinitely better over project Bob when I started

    And so we see Richard suffering from the after effects of yet more cack handed gibbonry.
    Courage mon brave.

    Personally I pity the poor owner (me). The fact that he has had the perseverance to complete the car now (and not just flip it) given the number of ham fisted buffoons that said they had done work and hadnt or had poorly completed works is terrible in the extreme. Patience is a virtue they say - and Im lucky I found Richard. Keep following his vidoes to see how Im propping up his retirement fund......
    Yet to come are the old papermashy wing repairs being fixed.......etc etc

      😁 I need to set up a crowdfund to pay me my wages while I have a monster clear out. You do not want to see the workshop today. No spoilers but there is a pile of gearboxes, axles and engines outside!

    Mixing metric calipers and vented disks with imperial axles is a minefield. The holes in the calipers and the shanks on the bolts are close but incompatible.

    • @churchhouseclassics
      @churchhouseclassics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have yet to get into this world of pain. Getting new old stock imperial calipers is getting tricky now. I have a few complete sets of very used items for refurb, but that would only be for solid discs. I generally upcycle these on imperial axles.
      I understood that aside from fixings the key difference between solid and vented disc calipers was the spacer in between the halves.

    Nice to see the car is being saved! A little frightening this business of finding mistakes in the assembly, but I guess if nothing is damaged it will be okey...
    Do you rebuild the steering box inhouse? If not, who do you use? Looking forward to the next episode, Cheers

      Thank you Jens, this one definitely needs to be saved. I was aware that it had been thrown together but sometimes I need to dramatise the bits I find as a warning to those who think part finished projects are always a walk in the park.
      4 bolt boxes I buy refurbed from AEW Paddock Spares , I am about to refurb a 3 bolt box for a customer though, keep watching on this channel and I may do a video of it

    Looks like an abandoned project that has been thrown together enough so that it can be sold and trailered away.
    Must admit I wondered if there was a mixture of imperial/metric wheel nut/studs given how tight they were.

    • @bobuilt10
      @bobuilt10 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had a 1979 RRC fitted with white eight spokes which had thinner flanges than the factory wheels. As a consequence the taper on the nut bottomed out on the hub and damaged the first few threads causing similar issues.

    • @churchhouseclassics
      @churchhouseclassics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was thrown together, and I had factored that in when estimating for the job.
      It is a warning however to folk who think they can do a greasy flip on a part finished project.

    • @churchhouseclassics
      @churchhouseclassics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep I had something similar. In this case I just think that the nuts were wrong thread. Just no idea what

    • @churchhouseclassics
      @churchhouseclassics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You say that but we are kind of short of rust free 47 year old Range Rovers in the UK. As a project this is a superb base from which to build a great car.
      Did you see project Bob at the start of that project?

    • @Okierover
      @Okierover 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was referring to the shoddy assembly, mismatched bolts, and state of some of those parts. Rust free was not a goal of Solihul when they produced our beloved vehicles. I saw your "harvesting" video. If we dont do that, there wont be any left.

    Hi Richard, Thanks for another great video. I have a '76 D suffix Lincoln Green Rangie (and a '76 Stag btw) and wondered if you knew how to tell if it's the original motor and whether you think originality affects the value much or is condition more important? Thanks again from South Australia.

    • @churchhouseclassics
      @churchhouseclassics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it was built in Australia then it will be a CKD model and from here in the UK it is really difficult to judge as to whether it is original or not. Here in the UK low mileage and original mechanicals can add to the value but more often than not just make the vehicle a little more attractive to a potential buyer.

    Of course with the heat to remove the bolt the rubber caliper seals are now buggered :(
    Those swivel joints look like ostrich egg cups :)
    Oh boy you need a sand blasting cabinet.
    Painting inside engines (with the correct paint, Glyptal) aids the speedy flow of oil back to the sump, it is used a lot in racing cars for better performance..
    I know you get there in the end, but you do make me cringe when you don't use a vice and the correct tool to remove a seal.

    • @churchhouseclassics
      @churchhouseclassics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Had I used a gas axe then I would have agreed with you. The heat soak into the caliper body is quite efficient. I was also concentrating the blowlamp on the axle case mounting rather than the caliper lug. I am 100% confident that the cailiper seals - arf arf - survived.
      I do have a few dead units, I should make a sculpture and raise funds.
      I do have a blast cabinet but rarely the time to use it. Majority of the time my customer would like to see clean and tidy rather than pay me for the "looks new" approach.
      And yes 100% on correct paints, alas there are ham fisted gibbons who use enamel or any other paint that they can find. then they smother it 10thou thick over gasket faces etc

      @jagvette1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@churchhouseclassics OK great response, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that the seals are ok, I am sure you will test them on the Mulsanne straight :)

    I have a 2002 td5 defender what i bought 2 months ago its wiring harnass got more joints than a lenth of chain🤦dont know how someone can bugger a car up like that.

    • @churchhouseclassics
      @churchhouseclassics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to see someone bugger up a car just take a look at a brand new Defender, looks good, on paper it is outstanding, but just how far do you want to be from a main dealer?
