FOMO. It's real and scary. Look at drivers around you when you're at a red light (unless you yourself are one of these) - most people have to check things on their phones. Just yesterday actually saw a couple in their vehicle scrolling their feeds (yes, including the driver) while going down the road. Of course, driver's attention wasn't given to driving and he kept slowing down, speeding up and weaving. It's scary what we've become... Even at dinner time, in restaurants, families, people no longer interact with each other - they have to scroll to see what they may be missing when what they're truly missing is who is in front of them...
I was born in the 80's, and am definitely a child of the internet, but I've never really found myself doomscrolling. I deeply resent intrusions of privacy, and being "the product," so I just don't have the usual quartet of social media. I tend to use the phone in public more for times that I don't want somebody awkwardly attempting small talk with me.
The societal shift to digital interactions is truly scary. If you slightly comment on that, you'll get mad comments. I say that because my personal experience has always been negative even when I ask somebody "may you put away your phone?". I'm always against close-mindedness, but in this case, I wish I had some likeminded people around me 😪

Yea it's true but you don't take in most of the info as our brain doesn't work that way ,if you actually want to learn something, take notes ,and go through them untill you remember it properly (neuroplasticity)
TH-cam works in a different way. Watching a video recommended to you feels like you learnt something, but actually the knowledge is often cannot retain well in your brain because it does not get used.
I know what you mean and in terms it's correct but don't let the slightly better feeling that you learned something fool you. After some struggles I was able to delete everything besides TH-cam and also don't watch shorts at all anymore. But just because informative Videos with good production quality feel better, we often jump around and don't actively try to learn the stuff we see. So if this falls flat we're back at the beginning and just spend time being passive instead of active, maybe even worse than before. I mean 60 min tiktok? Hell no what a waste of time but 3x20 min vids on TH-cam? Easy! But just passive consumed it's not really better unfortunately
I'm glad he talked about comment sections on twitter being just more feeds and not actual comments idk when it changed But it has been like this for like half a year or something it's so unsettling to the point that even in the comments there are comments commenting how the comments are just more videos instead of actual comments.

Spot on mate, I called this 15 odd years ago! I was speaking with someone on the original dev team for Facebook who confirmed this even back then. The feeds are designed around slot machines, the refresh response times are instant and they implement that spinning wheel as a timer to create suspense to keep you hooked, just like you demonstrated with the monkey. It's no accident but all by design, they are literally made to be addictive like a drug which is why this one individual jumped ship. The level at which tech is used to psychologically manipulate us is actually frightening, just look at things such as Cambridge Analytica for example! I don't often buy into conspiracies but there are definitely incidents where it is being used for nefarious purposes! Some real Black Mirror stuff and yet here we are still scrolling away! 😅 One inconsistency though, as an electronics tech, the board you showed from a 'new' slot machine is actually something very old from around the early 90's! Old Intel i950 processor and erasable EPROM chips! 😁
The part around 10:00 is really interesting. It really shows how clever people just want to make technology easier and better, and how big companies take a run with it to just hook users and make more money.
Ngl I absolutely hate the new "recommended" notification on TH-cam I was like "oh look a new notification" and sees a short from a random guy I watched like 2 days ago Or they show shorts like "3 seconds ago" and I was like "I'm early" but the thing is that short has been uploaded for 9 hours
Thats why I have disabled all notifications from my phone apart from crucial ones and I still use buttons instead of gesture controls, it helps just to touch the home button rather than doing the left swipe. Thanks for bringing out this video
Aruns beard just randomly grew during the sponsor section, I know its because he either recorded it earlier or later but I just find it so hilarious for no reason.
11:15 so that's why i keep receiving facebook notifications about a friend commenting on another friend's post THAT I HAVEN'T SEEN YET! Great insight Arun. Well done. 👍👍👍
Scheduled summary is a great feature. I disable almost every notification besides important work ones, and then keep thing like news, finance, etc. until after work to be summarized.
When it comes to the user side, social media mainly serves two purposes: either it’s your job, or you’re trying to make it your job. The other purpose is to show that you have a superior or better life than others, and you want to display it and receive attention for it. Outside of that, it’s completely useless-who needs it apart from those two reasons? I use technology intensively, and I change phones very regularly. I love taking photos and videos, etc., but I don’t have any social media accounts.
Genuine question, if you’re creating art through photos and videos how do you share those experiences with others? Asking because I went into music to perform for others, not really with the intention of making it my job (which is why I didn’t do it after college lol) but art is much more valuable (to me) than doing something creative for a job.
Great video. Further proof of how much this design ethic is key for these platforms is the fact that even when you are disciplined about turning off notifications, the platforms will "invent" new types to try and lure you back in constantly. Facebook and Instagram do this very often, they give you tools to make their platforms less addictive but they also try to make them unpleasant to use.
Tried tiktok for a few days and got so bored I deleted the crap. Never understood why people like that app so much😂 I find what I want on sources that actually show videos the correct way so it can also fit my TV and can flip the phone sideways🙈 Vertical videos also makes me loose interest very fast. Annoying when videos are the wrong way.
It's good to see a clear explanation of these tactics getting refreshed attention. To add another example of where intermittent reinforcement is used: in domestic violent / severely abusive relationships. This is why the victim stays, even though outsiders think "why would anyone be dumb enough to stay with a DV partner?!". It's because the partner is only sometimes violent or cruel, otherwise they are the most amazing partner you can imagine. It's the good they do that does the most damage and makes it so incredibly hard to leave. Literally addiction. Even years after you leave them, you're haunted by the good parts.
I'm literally available in most social media apps (including tiktok) and get loads of notifications, yet i barely use these apps. I spent most of my time on youtube and even then it's only for like just over half an hour
This may be the most important and useful video you have ever posted. Thank you for concisely summarizing events and manipulations that have been happening for years.
I really love when you make videos like this that are slightly out of your usual niche of tech reviews. You do them very well and, as usual, keep them very engaging. These kinds of conversations aren't just very important but they also might be what save us from ourselves in the future. I'm looking forward to more content like this. I'd love to see your take on 'brainrot'.
My phone's battery was too low , then suddenly shut down, then I connected the charger and turned on the phone, as soon as my phone turned on it immediately flooded with vibrating notification and shut down again because of low battery and so much power consumption because of vibrating notifications 🥲 Btw, it was Samsung Galaxy S21 5G which has 4000 mah battery 😢
Here is what I do 1. Using browser instead of app for social media so it is not much user friendly. I kind of observed that ads/sponsored content will be less when using a browser instead of app. 2. Once in a while, logout and uninstall from social media for 2-3 weeks to check if I can control myself from using it.
12:09 i’m pretty sure the PIA column of this table is either outdated or just a lie, as far as i know PIA has unlimited devices and more than 85 server locations
0:40 this is exactly the reason i completely disabled the official facebook app on my phone (can't uninstall it cause samsung preinstalled it on my phone) and use a third party app where i have all notifications disabled, this way i can look at facebook whenever i feel like it and don't get sucked in with notifications
@@katycatjulius Strange, all Samsung phones released after that time should allow for Facebook to be deleted. Unless of course you bought one released earlier in the year, but bought it later. Regardless, fuck Facebook and their sea of notifications.
Color? Whats that. I have it in grayscale so nothing is “eye catching” I have been aware of the downfall of social media for a couple years which is why I have never scrolled on any useless short form apps. The only real social media I have is TH-cam. And yes I have been way too attached to TH-cam long form videos and I’m trying to stop it. It’s just tough given the fact that it’s always in arms reach. I am truly scared for this generation when people actually have to grow up and get a job for a sustainable life.
That dopamine rush happening when you anticipate! So true. When you order something from an on-line market, waiting for it to come then it arriving can be a lot more intensely pleasurable than when you open it and look at whatever it is. Especially if it's just a trinket you purchase just to say you've got one!
My biggest problem with this video: That really doesnt look like 6/10 lunch at 03:49. Rather more 2/10 and thats me being generous. Other than that, great stuff!
Another thing is that battery technology is improving therefore the battery power doesn't deplete quickly and therefore keeping you stuck in the doomscrolling.
What I really like about this video and the one about how mobile games keep you addicted is that Arun himself uses a lot of techniques to keep you engaged on his videos. This video has a lot of it, like screen shutting down when he beats on the table or fast cuts with lots of movements.
A lot of the Advice on stopping this reminds me of a book by James Clear called Atomic Habits. A good read not just to stop your own bad habits but also for ways to actually use this type of psychology on yourself to make positive change in your life.
Get rid of all social media accounts, you ain't missing on anything. I deleted social media 5 years ago, Life has been very peaceful after it, my anxiety levels reduced. My focus and concentration increased noticeably.
1:37 nah no way you actually just called it "X"... it's always been and will always be "Twitter" for me. Oh, and on the twitter algorithm... why not just use the "following" tab? That way you only see content from people you follow, not content from people you don't follow that could piss you off

One inconsistency though, as an electronics tech, the board you showed from a 'new' slot machine is actually something very old from around the early 90's! Old Intel i950 processor and erasable EPROM chips! 😁
3:20 we know you're thinking about dhrisha, but what we really wanna know is who milo is thinking about ?
He should have thought about Rick Astley
😂😂
The part around 10:00 is really interesting. It really shows how clever people just want to make technology easier and better, and how big companies take a run with it to just hook users and make more money.
I love the way that you put the ad in the end of the video. Also pls make more content like this because its very usefull and good for people

Ngl I absolutely hate the new "recommended" notification on TH-cam I was like "oh look a new notification" and sees a short from a random guy I watched like 2 days ago
Or they show shorts like "3 seconds ago" and I was like "I'm early" but the thing is that short has been uploaded for 9 hours
In 12:10 that information isn’t entirely accurate as Proton VPN has more than 100 different country server locations not 67
4:37 why did that feel like an ad intro???
Oh yeaaaa!
Social Media is humanities most anti-social creation.
Its like when you scroll on yt shorts for a certain topic and slowly the shorts transition away from that into something new and intresting...

Thats why I have disabled all notifications from my phone apart from crucial ones and I still use buttons instead of gesture controls, it helps just to touch the home button rather than doing the left swipe. Thanks for bringing out this video

Why didn’t you use youtube too for the examples of social medias’ bad practices?
Why do u think
Because youtube is still fine, unless if you open shorts.
u dont have to target everyone for everything bro
@@edk1124The search on TH-cam is unusable at this point and turning off notifications saves you from the constant bs the app pushes to you
Ig because TH-cam doesn't have these problems. It has big problems but those problems are different.
Deleted TikTok a long time ago and never looked back. That's a time consuming demon disguised as an app
Never installed TikTok in the first place, hehe
It's literally in the name tik Tok tik tok
Tried tiktok for a few days and got so bored I deleted the crap. Never understood why people like that app so much😂 I find what I want on sources that actually show videos the correct way so it can also fit my TV and can flip the phone sideways🙈 Vertical videos also makes me loose interest very fast. Annoying when videos are the wrong way.
Again, a high-quality video!! Always good content!
ARUN, this video is INSANELY GOOD
like INSANELY GOOD
Great Job Man, I love the perspective you took there
It's good to see a clear explanation of these tactics getting refreshed attention.
Social media is soooo bad if you use it wrong. I've been severely limiting my time on TH-cam recently.
I'm literally available in most social media apps (including tiktok) and get loads of notifications, yet i barely use these apps. I spent most of my time on youtube and even then it's only for like just over half an hour

1. Using browser instead of app for social media so it is not much user friendly. I kind of observed that ads/sponsored content will be less when using a browser instead of app.
2. Once in a while, logout and uninstall from social media for 2-3 weeks to check if I can control myself from using it.

Color? If you want to avoid random videos feeds on Home tab/screen, except your subscriptions, just trun off TH-cam watch history.
That dopamine rush happening when you anticipate! So true.
