Who could have foreseen this coming? Let's see, WotC comes up with GSL for 4th edition and manage to spawn a competitor over a decade ago. WotC comes up with the (NOT) OGL 1.1 for 6th edition while simultaneously trying to kill off access to the previous OGL and will manage to spawn several competitors. Obviously, the bean counters at Hasbro didn't take into consideration that many of these "larger" companies have had a decade plus now in game design and game publishing and would rather keep their creations to themselves rather than sign off to a heartless mega-corp.

And don't forget that Wolfgang Baur, owner of Kobold Press worked for TSR and WOTC and has decades of experience under his belt. He also contracts and employees so many of the best names in the industry. The 3rd party industry is flooded with talented people. WOTC started a fire they can't control.

Real simple: *Corp heads, lawyers, everyone in on the 'One DnD and OGL 1.1' plans are arrogant, greedy, deluded, high on power. They look at fans not as customers, but as ATM machines.*
-- It is fine to want to expand, to have game evolution and improvements.
But saying or hinting that people who make add ons are "stealing money from us" is factually wrong and a horrible business and horrible game decision.
Just everyday players must ask: what exactly is it "we get" for WotC doing this?
For content creators, this is even worse, and they have no reason to work with WotC.
History if full of people who thought "I have all the power. No one else can oppose, no one dares go off on their own!"
Hasbro and WotC look at DnD as a monopoly on fun and the entire idea, thinking of customers:
"You have too much invested in us to change. You have no other choice. You will do as we say."

@@priestesslucy I don't know Paizo's personal financial situation, but it's an idea that will make Paizo far more resilient from Hasbro threats in the future, The Might and Magic IP is screaming out for a TTRPG adaption, and Paizo would be the perfect company to do it (With their publishing background) like I said .. I don't know even if Ubisoft would even sell.. and for how much, but now could be the perfect time for PAIZO to be bold as they have the momentum, and a crowd source for the money could be done with Paizo's popularity and Hasbro's hate.. (Currently Paizo is being chained to the Hasbro beast)
It's an idea.. and a good one.. and it would be less costly then taking on Hasbro in the courts.

Multiple companies need to create an open source system and try to get the community on one system. I hope Kobold Press avoids and tries to not overly monetize the way (wotc) is pushing with OGL, sin over sin type deal. Hopefully their Open Source Push is actually Open. If everyone notices all of these 3rd parties banding together like a boetia league type deal, a collective of companies to stand up to Hasbo/Wotc. That is only way they back down.

I will gladly play a system similar to 5e that has no ties to WotC. I will not play Pathfinder because of certain design elements that prevented me from getting into DnD during the 3.5e era and earlier. I find the idea of a mage that has limited amounts of magic they can do, and/or has to prepare every spell they're gonna use that day separately, to be a complete turn-off. I need either a mana system with recharging mana (or a way to steal mana from enemies), or a system like in 5e where some smaller spells can be used all day without using a resource and the big ones use a flexible resource.
If Project Black Flag gives me what I need, I will play it.

I think it’s good to explore new systems, but let’s be real here, the OGL was such a powerful tool and should remain in place indefinitely, as was intended by those who originally created it.
GM* Toolbox, I’d like to know, if the community were to band together and start a coalition devoted to preserving the OGL, would we have your support? Despite your decision to use a new system, would you be willing to help in the founding of a group that protects both the OGL and 3rd party developers, new and old, not just now, but perpetually? I think it’s time to get a few people together to talk about this. D&D has a huge fandom, all are very devoted, and I think there’s more than enough interest in saving 3rd party OGL content that we could raise money and have a legal team ready to sue the pants off WotC at the first sign of abuse.
It is my opinion that switching is a big move and I applaud it, but I would like to simultaneously protect those who don’t want to switch, protect those who still want to make D&D compatible content, and keep such a powerful tool alive and well as intended. I think saving the OGL (which would ultimately hit Hasbro right in their wallet), is just the right thing to do, and I also think it’s time to remind WotC who exactly is biting the hand that feeds who. They owe their current success to the OGL.

That is a bit more of a grey area than you may think. Game mechanics can not be copyrighted. However the various means by which they expressed may be. But to the extent we are talking about has never been tested. The idea of the OGL was to just take away that grey area. For example KP couldn't copy the spell magic missile and its description word for word. But they could make "force missile" and change the description a bit. But things like "damage" and "range" are too abstract a concept to copyright. I'm not saying this is cut and dry but it is possible.

I think part of the issue is that creating a whole new system is something that takes quite a bit of development time before you're in a position to publish anything... if paying staff (so that they can eat and keep a roof over their heads) needs to be a priority, then commiting to a new game system at little or no notice may be a step they cannot afford to make... Beyond that, this has blown up in the space of a couple of weeks, there's still time for other publishers to commit to systems of their own

    • @danieljacobson74
      @danieljacobson74 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MercenaryPen I get that. I worked in the book business for over twelve years. I got to wittiness the lead time to publishing a variety of books. That time is just a part of the business of building a brand, and bringing to market product. Its called development. And, anyone that bitches about how long it takes is really not willing to but their skin in the game to make money doing it.
Still, I am freaking annoyed that a lot of the DND community is losing their collective shit because the people that legally own the thing are asking others who have been freeloading to start paying to use or not use their thing anymore. And I won't get into any arguments about stifling creativity or people losing jobs. In my opinion those are important issues to cover but immaterial in the long run.
Lets by honest if these 3rd party developers were to make content for the Red Wall TTRPG Would they be making the same sales and be as emotionally invested in it. The only reason that there is as much panic and anger is that the people that have been riding the popularity of all that development time that others put into the product that is the DND IP are now realizing that they will have to pay money and potentially lose the ownership of their product.
An argument that I find hilarious because they are essentially doing exactly that. Taking the idea of someone else and using it... to make money.
My point is simple the whinging and whining fuscktards that are bitching about how WOTC is "stealing" their content should go and build their own brand. Actually prove that they have the creativity, business acumen, and know how to successfully make their own TTRPG or piss off.
