The goth type thing started out as a joke in the 90's, and I think it's sad as hell that some people want to stick themselves into just one style box. I have been into both goth and punk music since the mid 80's and have always done my own thing. Being in a box is very limiting and stifles creativity. Also, you can wear what the heck you want and listen to whatever the heck you want without worrying about the music style matching your clothing style.

    • @vixenghoul

My styles are Victorian goth and nu goth mainly but sometimes I just wear cute spooky chill clothes or lounge clothes that aren’t goth or spooky at all. After watching the video I can say I have clothes in all these subcultures. I do not listen to classical music though but I listen to music that’s associated with these different subcultures.

You missed gothic lolita, but be careful with this style as it has many rules and the community protects them like the wolf pack :p
And recently gothic academia started to be a thing - darker version of dark academia, mainly for people who goes to the university or artists/scientists, it's also more about literature than music kind of goth, which places dark literature on the first place :) It theoretically grew out of the internet aesthetic, but I feel like it has a lot of potential, and it was around before this dark academia trend, but now it finally get the name. I think it's super important, because many of those people listen to classical music or do not like music at all, but the literature they are reading, their style and dark meetings in the cafes makes up for this. It has a lot to do with dark romanticism and writers like Novalis, Poe, Nerval etc. It's about admiration for genius and madness.

Gothic lolita really is just about fashion, it has no ties to music at all (some might say Visual Kei, but that's just because many vk bands wore gothic lolita, not the other way around!) and it's purely fashion based, like sweet, classic, and old school lolita.

I know this is an older post, but it's great to finally see another person say this.
Any subculture is a lot like a tree. Neither can survive without a variety of roots to help it survive the different seasons of life. And while everyone knows that Goth has a TON of flashy musical and fashion branches, it's weird that so many people will ignore the historical, economical and literary roots that has kept it healthy for 40 years.

@@caesarjg5304 Well of course there are the classics, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy.. I recommend watching the movie The Hunger since the beginning of the film is the music video for Bauhaus's Bela Lugosi's dead, and it's just an amazing vampire film... for some stuff that came post classic try some bands like The Cruxshadows, the Frozen Autumn, the Dead Can Dance.. Now if you want some bands that might be easier to start with, there are bands that skirt the border of gothdom or are just plain beloved by goths. For that we have bands like Depeche Mode, VNV nation (sorry if I'm going a bit nuts with this list I'm currently suffering from an aweful flu).... For some darker more electronic and industrial sounding stuff try Gary Numan post mid 90s, Blutengel, The Birthday Massacre. And then for more modern stuff there are bands such as The Angels of Liberty, Lebanon Hanover. Oh and here is the especially fun part of goth music, all these bands are still active, well ok, Siouxsie doesn't have Banshees anymore but I'm going to see her live in May regardless.. Hope this provides a decent start.. Oh one last musician so I already mentioned Bauhaus, but for me one of the things that got me started on goth music in the first place was the haunting guitar riffs of Daniel Ash, aka the Guitarist of Bauhaus, but who has done alot of stuff independent of Bauhaus, my favorite being "Burning Skies" by tones on tail...

Wow, that sounds extremely familiar! LOL.
When Goth started in the 80's it was simple; you listened to the music that reflected your melancholic mood and dressed in kind. You usually liked darker themed movies and read dark novels. Why? Because that was the way that we felt, how we coped and pushed back at a bleak, hopeless non caring no-future society. It was a form of rebellion. During that post punk time in history, we were primed and ready for it. It was that way back in 1982 when I was a young man, and now for me at almost 60, it's still that way. It's become far more complicated than it needs to be. Goth is a state of mind. Wearing black and listening to Goth music doesn't make you a Goth or Gothic. The music and the genre was birthed out of the state of mind that those who would become Gothic we already in. Ever notice that Joy Division never looked like a Goth band but was instrumental in kicking off the genre? It was because they were already a melancholic group of guys to begin with. Heck, 42 years ago Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division, took his own life. After battling severe depression, Curtis died on May 18, 1980. He was just 23 years old. Listen to the song "Love will tear us apart again". In some instances Goth was the only entity that understood us. Now it seems to have become a mere fashion statement.
Anyway, just my .50 cents worth. LOL.

I agree with this completely. I also remember that some of the bands like Bauhaus did not like that "goth" term. They liked "dark glam" and when doing "bela legosi's dead" Peter thought "sing like an evil David Bowie." also Nico. Robert Smith was always joking about goth. Personally, I refuse to be labeled, but I know what I love.

    • @chameleon47

Goth is a music genre and a subculture based on that music genre. The only "state of mind" is that which is created by listening to goth music, and is drawn to this music. Just listening to a goth band or two does not make one goth, but loving goth music above all other forms certainly does.
Joy Division was instrumental in starting several types of music. Like The Jesus and Mary Chain based their entire sound on "Ceremony."
I forget which song it is that was proto-darkwave. Guess I will just have to listen to all of their stuff again. Oh, the horror.

You forgot Steampunk goth or Steamgoth. I’m a Victorian goth and a steampunk. I love the Victorian aesthetic. Also I’m an obsessed Alice in wonderland and science fiction fan. So I guess I fit the steampunk cliché? No I don’t just wear brown 🙄. Or black for that matter. I wear both with other colors. I listen to all of the bands you mentioned and old punk bands but mostly classical music. I’m also a devoted Abney Park fan. I make or modify just about everything. I collect antiques and make Victorian dresses. I’ve been into all of this since the mid late 80’s so I guess I’m an elder goth? Or elder steampunk? Whatever?! Too many labels! I think the main things are music + fashion and DIY or modify make it your own. Oh and yes I drink tea from an antique tea set. If anyone has an issue with this I challenge you to a Tea duel!

What you wear is irrelevant. Goth is a music-based subculture. If you don't listen primarily to goth music, you are not goth- you are just into fashion. None of these are gothic styles, btw.
These styles were all made up as a joke in the 90s by goths making fun of people.
Steampunk is a fashion/art-based subculture, and thus does not fall into the goth category, as goth is music-based.

First of all, I applaud you for taking the time & interest in looking all of this up and finding pictures to tag on. And I think you have a great TH-cam video personality. Keep rocking!
Moving on, so gothic clothing didn't start in the late 70s/early 80s, it was, however, trendy at that time. Furthermore, punk and rock goth styles were born with that genre of music, which also reflected current events. What's really interesting about gothic style is it evolves with the current events. For example, the Middle Ages were a period that began at the end of the Fall of the Roman Empire. Many civilizations were trying to rebuild their economies, and lift their spirits, after hundreds of years of war. During that time gothic architecture was extremely popular and mimicked the rigid policies, gothic art mirrored the emotions & phoenix rising out of the ashes -esque scenery, and gothic clothing reflected the available materials mixed with social or anti-social constructs, emotions, creativity, etc. I love it!
I'm certain there was gothic before then but I haven't found any documents about it. I can imagine a prehistoric, tribal goth! If that's not a thing I really want to make it one!

I have a question; what is your stance on the whole mall goth thing, I personally love a lot of the alternative metal bands and stuff that were labeled as mall goth, I acknowledge that it isn’t really tied to the goth subculture’s history, but do you know what subculture it actually is or a different label for it? I also love the fashion for the 90s mall goth stuff too it’s very beautiful.

@@lnbni I am so glad that I was already in my 20's when the whole mall goth thing happened in the late 90's because in the late 80's/very early 90's my friends and I would go to a local mall to hangout because there was literally nowhere else to socialize if you were under 21. You could go to Denny's but that required money. Going to the mall and sitting in air conditioning was free. Lots of people from different subcultures would go there. My BFF and I were into both goth and punk music and looked like it. It's funny but I met quite a few hardcore punks there. This was all before Hot Topic. The only store in that mall that catered to us was Contempo Casuals, which was a nationwide chain of clothing stores that carried very weirdo friendly clothes and the quality was really good. I had a bracelet from there that lasted over 20 years and they sold really nice crushed velvet leggings. I think it is kind of strange that teens have latched onto the whole mall goth thing, because of the history of the term.I was a goth in a mall, not a mall goth. LOL

What a wonderful, gothically cheerful video, thank you. I came here directly from a video that basically said the exact opposite; "there are no subgenres. Goth is Goth!" Personally, i fit into 3 or 4 by nature; Romantic, Victorian, Vampire, & Corporate. My personal style is a mix of these. I am fascinated by poetry, calligraphy, graveyards, the occult, & of course, bones. Musically, i listened to Depeche Mode & Gary Numan when i was a teen, but i also love Nightwish, Symphonic Metal, & of course, I am most at home with Classical music; especially 17th-19th centuries.
As for people who say, "Don't put yourself in a box..." mine are rosewood, with brass adornments, & lined with sumptuous crimson satin. I'm very comfortable there, thanks.
