Dan, congratulations on your Montreal-Ottawa ride! I routinely do this ride, once or twice a year. As a 62 year old rocking a "Dad bod", my message to all your viewers is that if I can do it, anyone can! Some lessons from my experience: 1) For a ride this long (and not always near civilization), come prepared. Three water bottles, snacks, sun screen, patch/repair kit. 2) Starting early is great for less baking in the sun. In June, you have good visibility from 4:30 am onwards. If (like you and me), it takes about 40km to get off the island and through Isle Perot, you can start (with lights, on city streets) as early as 2:30, getting to the unlit country roads/trails as the sun rises. 3) Best way off the western part of Montreal island is by Hymus/Ste Marie. Hymus is an industrial road that is straight, wide, with no parked cars and few intersections. Ste Marie leads straight to the bridge off without the challenges you faced.
The trail from Rigaud to st Eugene is being paved... Two weeks ago i was there talking to the Rigaud town workers who where paving with a new type of special recycled pavement. They paved a small strip and will see how it lasts during the winter, Then will be paving all the way to St Eugene.
This video was a real nostalgia trip for me. I used to live in the west island of MTL, moved to Vaudreuil in my teen years, and now as an adult live in the outskirts (east) of Ottawa. you passed through a few of my homes and this was soo cool to see from a perspective that isn't my car windows. Great video!
I did that 42 years ago (with my sister), but it took us 2 days, and we spent the night at my uncle's place in Rigaud. Unfortunately I played video games all night, and the next day woke up late and we got to Ottawa at midnight. The trail didn't exist, we took the road along the river. Funny thing, our first day along the shore of the West Island was also very windy.
I can't imagine how different it would have been to do the trip 42 years ago. A great adventure to take part in with your sister. Thanks for sharing this memory!
OMG! I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. The way you ignored the loud protest on Parliament Hill as you celebrated your achievement completely exhausted, priceless. Love the content!

Thanks for the awesome recon video. I've been toying with the notion of riding from Ottawa to Montreal but wasn't too sure about the condition of the trail until now. 😎
I just came across this video. I am a Vaudreuil local and know some areas you cycled in very well. Some parts of the road along the Lake of Two Mountains have recently been repaved, but a lot of it is in poor condition. Also, I could have told you about the trail in Rigaud :) It is somewhat manageable in Rigaud if you get on a bit further, but there is a nicer road leading up to the St Eugene pavillion, where the real Prescott Russell trail actually starts. I have only gone as far as Vankleek Hill though, so thanks for showing me the rest of the trail. It is a trip I want to try one day. I admit that the part where the trail ends and the roads around Ottawa are making me nervous.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's had issues with the bike trail in the Rigaud area. I live in Ottawa and do Ottawa-Montreal once or twice a year, but I now prefer taking a ferry in Cumberland and cycle on the 148 for a large portion of the ride. It's a bit longer, but I love the scenery.
Dan, loved the video, I’ve always wanted to do this trail and it looks great! Not sure that I could do the full 200k tho! Would love to but you a beer but instead enjoy this! Thanks!
Wow, thank you so much for your comment and the super thanks - that’s my first one! Really happy to hear you enjoyed the video so much. It’s indeed a fantastic trail and I hope you get the chance to try it for yourself one day, even if just a part of it. Cheers 🍻 and have a great day!
From ottawa, the last leg of your journey near the geegees field is a staple of my weekend rides. Good hustle on the journey, hoping to try it myself someday to visit my friend in mtl!
I'm a long distance cyclist myself, and have been on parts of many of these trails, but I was exhausted watching you! Hahaha! Great job! Enjoyed the adventure!
Congrats for this landmark ride and new personal distance record. And thanks for recording and sharing it. On your bike going to Ottawa you overcame construction, wind, poor pavement, the abandoned trail between Rigaud and St-Eugène, a dip in energy, and overall soreness. But it was the drive back to Montreal that was more challenging. You did have two spare tires, just not the right size LOL. Well done. Log live the craziness!
I love biking in summer ! I usually look for the most beautiful scenery gravel trails , It's great cardio, and you get to see and hear the beauty of nature ..
I've been thinking about doing this path for a few years but had heard it wasn't well maintained and let go of the idea. I wish I saw this earlier in the year, maybe next year I'll give it a go!
First big ride ive ever done back in the 90s when i was 16 years old. grew up in Laval, started there and finished at my friends house in Orleans. think it was 180ks, finished on my hands and knees. The headwind was annoying. Best ridden in the opposite direction.
Congratulations. I ride an old railway bed from Cambridge Ontario to Port Dover on Lake Erie. My numbers matched your pretty close. -left at 5am rode 6 hrs and arrived in Dover [approx 50 miles] -rested for about 1.5 hrs -rode back to Cambridge, arrived at 8 pm 12 hrs solid pedalling, 10 minute breaks about once an hr, rest before returning 1.5 hrs total day was 15 hrs. On this day I just rode beyond my normal range and kept going. I didn't plan when I left the house to go further than my daily 30 mile ride on the same trail. I highly suggest to anybody to just go for and see what you are made of. It feels really cool to be a long ways from home.
Nice video! I did this exact same trip on the same trail, did it from ottawa to Montreal in 2 days, and slept at a campsite at Carillon. It was an awesome bike ride i recommend to everyone
I did Ottawa to Rigaud (Well, Voyageur Provincial Park) and then back a few days later. It was a lot of fun and beautiful but very flat. I sugar bonked on the way back and had to lay on the ground for 20 minutes to recoup energy, then ride 20 minutes, repeat x4. Eventually I got to a small town and bought a ton of junk at the convenience store
This video is really inspiring me to give it a shot next Spring - I am from Pointe-Claire but currently studying at the University of Ottawa. Thanks for the great video!
the prescott-russell trail is a favourite of mine living in the east end of ottawa, it might have been slightly longer of a trip but i would have recommended you do the ottawa river trail to get from blackburn where the P-R trail ends into parliment hill. avoids traffic and road riding down town, and has amazing views being right beside the river.
Congratulations, you deserve to feel proud of such an accomplishment. I have driven from Ontreal to Ottawa often and it was enjoyableto see the area again. The furthest I have cycled in a day wasjust over 100K, that was in Ireland on my way from Galway Bay to Dublin back in 1972.
Ireland is a phenomenal country, I cycled around Inis Mor about 15 years ago and I'd love to return for a proper bike tour one day. Thanks for watching!
I've ridden from Ottawa to Montreal 4 times, twice by that northern route and twice south from Alexandria to zig-zag towards the St Laurence, all taking about 7 hours. This is a great video!
I had similiar bikepacking trip with my friends this year starting from Ottawa. Unfortunately, both my friends and I got flat tire on quebec side (route 148) but fortunately both of our bikes are tubeless set up. And one of my spoke on the back wheel was broken when I was climbing on Mount Royale. After all we decided to rent an Uhaul from Montreal and drive back to Ottawa lol
I know this rail trail well, and have walked every kilometre of it (although never all at once!). Interesting to see it from a biker's perspective. It's always bothered me that it stops dead at the Ontario border, but the trail from there to Rigaud, as you discovered, is only maintained as a winter snowmobile trail, which is really a lost opportunity. Well done!
congrats, my girlfriend and i have a tandem bicycle, the further we have gone is a back and forth trip to Venise-en-Québec with a total of 117km in one day, but knowing that we can go to Ottawa on a bicycle is great especially with the bike trails network from St-Eugène, that will be a project for 2025 , thank you for sharing !

I would only want to ride the trail part. Have done many long distance tours in my younger past but no longer trust distracted drivers. I stick to rail trail paths in my area and quite enjoy it. Never more than 80 km. at 25 k/h average on a 34 y/o Bianchi. Sweet riding.
I've done a ride between Montreal and Ottawa 3 times! Not the exact ride you did, sometimes I rode the north side of the river. The strong headwinds along the canal on the West Island are typical, as well as the perpetual construction along the route, to the point where I've made it a regular practice to just catch the earliest train out of Montreal with my bike, and just start riding from Vaudreuil-Dorion or Deux-Montagnes. I tried that trail as well, my first time, but found it was too gravelly for my liking. I later found out, it's not so much a bike trail as it is a snowmobile trail in the winter. Also, it was pretty hilly, and I ended up having to break north to follow alongside the river. As a general rule I try to stick close to rivers when doing a bike tour, because that will be the least hilly route. Also for the return trip, I highly highly recommend catching the VIA rail train. I don't know if they're accepting bikes on the trains just yet, although the last VIA train car I was on this summer between Ottawa and Montreal clearly had a spot to hang bikes alongside the luggage racks inside the very car.
Congrats! I live in Ottawa and have always wanted to try this route in reverse. Incidentally, I know exactly where you were located when you found the groundhog, that guy is always there haha.
I did fews year ago Gatineau to Montreal but use Quebec side by using the green route took me about 17h to get to Montreal I was leaving Gatineau a 7 am but sadly for me the days didn't go well got some rain during the trip so that's slow my ride also do too many stop too eat I finally arrived in 2 am in Montreal and then I didn't have money for hotel so I sleep in a 24h restaurant then take greyhound bus back to Gatineau
Quite impressive! I have done the opposite : Hull (other side of the river opposite Ottawa) to Montreal. We did it in 2 days. Love it except for one area where it was very sketchy with 90 KM/H road with only 2 lanes and no real room for cyclists. The rest was great fun!
Great video to show my neck of the woods with several laughs along teh way - I wich I could ride these roads again but in time I will. The weekend you rode is the weekend they had crazy rain I think. I rode in Gramby - Bromont on the thursday and the next day and area I rode along la route verte was completely under water... crazy weather changes. Keep em coming as I love teh history you share with us long the way. Multi-day rides you could consider are 1) petit train du nord and 2) route des bleuets. #1 on my list for late May 2025 (before les mouches noires arrivent) and #2 once I retire - May 2027 (before my wife and I decide to travel to areas we have been waiting to see) 😁
Hey Man That's a favourite trip Ottawa - Montreal. I've done it many times, always in the other direction as you are going, but I've always loved it. I have gone through St. Eustache a couple times. I did MTL to OTT on the Prescott-Russell Trail this past summer, and I made that same error of taking that mulch path that led to nowhere, but that's actually not the trail, the trail is parallel to the mulch path, but the entrance to the trail was VERY overgrown, very easy to miss.
That’s a bucket list ride for me. I live in Ottawa so it was fun to see what you enjoyed on the way in. If you’re ever looking for info on cycling around Ottawa, let me know!
Yeah, around Rigaud this path isn't maintained for bike but only for quads and snowmobile. You need to keep on the road until further st-eugene. The linear park website mentions it. Preparation pays off!
Hi Dan, very fantastic to find a countryside road. I watch many videos from Europe where they had this kind of road a lot. I just find this one near here. It will be fun if we had more instead of the car risky road in Quebec. Félicitations !!!
Merci, Marc! I also did a portion of the trail from Cantic to Norton Creek in the south of Quebec earlier in the year, it's quite similar to the trail in this video, and I'd recommend it too if you haven't been before. It would be great if there were more nearby trails like this.
I’ve done this route many times both ways, when I go to Montreal from Ottawa for short holidays. One way to cut the distance, which I usually do on the return trip, is to take the EXO train to Vaudreuil and start off from there. It shaves off about 50 km. One nice stop along the way is Beau’s brewery in Vankleek Hill - beer has electrolytes, doesn’t it? 😅
I was so close to Beau's Brewery too - I added it to my google maps list if iI'm ever in the area again. And yes, good idea to cut the distance and start from Vaudreuil!
I wanted to do the same SOLO ride but from Ottawa to Montreal maybe next year after careful route planning. I wish to use your map and perhaps, do some route changes as I prefer to use paved roads. I intend to meet my wife at the end of my route so I have a ride back home, thus, no need to rent a car. Great adventure video.
With the amount I've rode my bike in Alberta over summer picking cans in town and roads I must have rode close to 1000km and fix everything bearings brakes tires cause I wear them out

Wish they'd make the abandoned train track between Rigaud and Hudson into a Bike Path.

That’s a bucket list ride for me. I live in Ottawa so it was fun to see what you enjoyed on the way in. If you’re ever looking for info on cycling around Ottawa, let me know!
As someone from Ottawa I find it hilarious that as soon as u get here there’s another huge protest
The trail you were on before St Eugene is mainly for all terrain vehicles
I hear a great tail ride along the old railway line from Ottawa to Kingston. Believe it is better in the late summer due to bugs. Ride safe Dan.
Thank You because of your great video I know what kind of touring bike I am going to get
Cheers Philip! Mine's a Marin Nicasio 2 and I absolutely recommend it. Good luck with your purchase.
It would be great if there were more nearby trails like this.
next year's goal.
maybe. enjoyed this video.
Glad to have caught your vid..thanks..
200+ km mostly on gravel with headwinds. That's more like 300 km on pavement in ideal conditions. Well done.
How good is cycling. Love it man
It's so great, isn't it Mark? I'm sad though cause the winter is days away and the bike will soon be retired for the year
I walked Montreal to Ottawa in April or May, 2003, 8 days, 25 km/day. Someone described me in a major newspaper, but I never found it.
love it!
Well done!
With the amount I've rode my bike in Alberta over summer picking cans in town and roads I must have rode close to 1000km and fix everything bearings brakes tires cause I wear them out
