    Your videos are the most helpful I have seen in a long time! Thank you! I grow ALL my greens. I have more than 12 fruit trees just outside my front door in what was my front yard. Now I don't have to mow, and instead get to harvest nearly every day. I have Moringa, Mango, Mulberry, Strawberry Tree, Soursop, Katook, Avocado, Turmeric, Ginger, Longevity Spinach, Strawberry, Aloe, Spearmint, Acerola Cherry, 3 kinds of Sweet Potato, Okinawan Spinach, and more in 19 large totes all in my front yard...
    Then there's the back yard: Florida Peach, Loquat, 2 Orange, 1 Key Lime, 1 Myers Lemon, several Suriname Cherry, 2 Banana, Blueberry, Fig, several Pineapples, Spanish Oregano, Katook, Longevity Spinach (tons), Parsnips, Tomato, Sweet Potatoes, Strawberries, Sweet Mini Bell Peppers, Papaya, etc. All because of God and his providence! Thanks again for your great video work. It's valuable to thousands of us small spacers!

    Right up my alley. I only have a small front yard with a big shade tree and no back yard. I have about a 2 foot by 3 ft garden and grow tons of lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, herbs, green beans and cucumbers between the tiny garden and pots on the patio.

    Well Done! This year, I have permission ( I garden at my mothers, she is very traditional) to make the garden pretty. Yeah, interplanting queen, thats me! Each pepper and tomato (staked) will be interplanted with basil, marigolds, and white alyssum. I cook with the marigolds and basil, the alyssum draws beneficial insects. oh, and lettuce plants stuck here and there that gets harvested out as the flowers grow.

    I've had very good luck growing Mesclun lettuce mix in the shade. It grows well in most types of soil and requires very little care. The seeds are cheap and easy to germinate. I usually plant 2k at a time in a 6 sq ft patch. This way I am able to regularly harvest the ten largest plants for about four months.

      You can do it! I need to get a seed starting video put together. A few common mistakes are burying the seed too deep (plant aproximatley the depth of the seed itself so things like lettuce are surface sown while beans are buried an inch or so), over water to the point where the soil is soggy (there should never be standing water in the pot or tray), or not giving the seedlings enough light (if they are leaning the are looking for light). Hope this helps!

    The HOA in my neighborhood prohibits growing any food in the front yard, and that includes having any kind of fruit tree. Wish the legislature would change that like they did with the Florida Friendly Landscaping act which was passed about 12 years ago. That included ALL homes in Florida, including those in HOAs, so homeowners cannot be required to grow a water-thirsty lawn but can put in any kind of plants - they don't have to be Florida natives - that are more landscape/environmentally friendly, so, for instance, ground covers. They typically don't require as much fertilizer so there isn't the drainage into the water table. Also, if your HOA insists you only have sod, you can file a complaint with the state because the HOA will have broken the law. If you want any help in understanding this act, just call your local state representative's office and they'll help you! [I speak from experience!]

      I had a frightful time with my HOA. Among other actions, they had their attorney sent me a registered mail threatening me with legal actions. I replied in email promptly and thanked them sincerely for their hard work and persistence, explaining I had prior approval with modifications due to the circumstances. In the end, they agreed to leave me in peace with adjustments. I’ve been growing happily ever since. 20 fruit trees and berries in 100’ by 75’ space. In this pandemic, I have my last laugh. I bet none of the HOA members had what my family enjoys just out in the front yard.

    Just incase you want to try, I take the root ends off of celery and onions and root them in clean water with a little cinnamon to keep knots put and when rooted I plant them in clean of plastic tape cardboards boxes from Amazon, Walmart and wherever by putting a plastic bag around the outside to keep from falling apart and when I need to plant in ground I make a hole slide the box out of the bag and into the hole then the cardboard breaks down in time to compost …. If you don’t have ground to plant them in they grow well in the boxes …recycling shredded paper makes a good ground cover for these bags also. Plastic pop bottles with the cap off and pin holes around the bottom make great waterers especially if you need to be away from your garden a few days. Just place them around the top of the planter and the water will soak in if you don’t want to have them buried in the soil at all.

    Thank you for the information on growing more in a small place. Your garden looks healthy & happy. We moved into our home in the fall and started our new spring garden over clay sandy virgin soil. We’re using raised beds as we have climatic challenges of lots of rain, heat & humidity. Though some colder freezing temps in the winter. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

      Build your soil fertility by sheet mulching: th-cam.com/video/cql-AMD4LaM/w-d-xo.html. Start composting, aim for hot composting if your able.

    I knew a Pastor that hosted a Pastor from Haiti for a week. At the end he asked his opinion about what he saw. He said he was surprised by the amount of time and money we spend on yards that produce no food.
    Everything I plant should be edible 😁

    Thanks for these tips, Elise. I would like to find a source that gave how close to the house we could plant certain fruit-bearing trees. I have some crepe myrtles in our front flower beds and would love to replace them with fruit trees, but definitely don't want to damage the house's foundation by planting too close. Do you have a resource for this information?

    • @TheUrbanHarvest
      @TheUrbanHarvest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nothing in particular I would just look at whatever fruit tree your considering then searching root habit or something like that. You could always do blueberries too which are more shrub like with smaller root systems. Hope this helps!

      Watch tree roots close to water and septic line. They will invade over time.
