    I'm 99% convinced Paulie definitely rescued that painting from the trash and it's just sitting around in his house somewhere.

      You can also make the inference that Tony returned it by the way he looks and glosses at the painting. Coming to the realization that Paulie is right

    • @sleepy_jean
      @sleepy_jean 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@georgeyacoub2075 What? The look was unrelated to the painting, it was related to his current situation. This is immediately before he personally kills his cousin. His eyes locking on the sword is the most significant part.
      Another big thing is the situation in which Paulie rescued the painting. You see Paulie sitting there looking afraid of the painting of Tony before getting it touched up. That's because this was immediately after Tony killed Ralphie, a captain, over nothing. I think the painting was a symbol of how other captains started to fear Tony after realizing no one was safe.

    There is meaning behind this. Tony was angry when he first saw it because he though he was being mocked. When he threw it in the garbage it was outside and he saw the true colors of the painting showing that it was painted out of honor and respect. Art always looks different outside sometimes better and sometimes worse. That is why art studios usually have "true color" lights so your painting does not look different outside.

    This was a direct reference to Napoleon I think. If Tony fucked with New York (like Napoleon invaded Russia) he would lose his empire just like Napoleon did. He realized he had to be a leader and deal with his cousin if he wanted things with New York to stay healthy. Even though he pissed off Phil by doing it himself, he still did it himself and things stayed OK with New York for a while anyways. I suppose in the long run Phil still held a grudge.

    I can’t help but feel heartbroken for Paulie in this scene…Beansie said it perfectly You are all he’s got…Paulie isn’t exactly the type of guy to spend money when it’s not needed and can sometimes be the quintessential example of a cheap skate so when he took the time and money to go over the painting and spice it up you know it truly means a lot to him, Paulie sees Tony as his general and someone who can give him orders to give his life some meaning, Paulie wanted to represent his general by hanging a state of the art painting of him…And instead of realising this Tony just immediately assumed it was some sort of sick joke or making a mockery of him…Paulie is no angel by any stretch of the imagination but my heart really broke for him here.

    There's often a lot of confusion why Paulie took the painting. Was it because he killed Ralph's horse, or to honor Tony? None of those things are correct. Actually the horse meant nothing to Paulie in the picture and only Tony himself did.
    Paulie probably first did take the painting, because of how much it cost, he made reference to it.
    Then he got the idea to hang it up in his home, and change the painting. Because it was Paulie's way of wanting to feeling important. Look at Tony in the picture, he looks like he's giving homage to someone. And I think that's what Paulie liked about it.
    Paulie changed it to a Napoleon like, to feed his own ego. That Paulie is this great soldier, part of a great cause, serving for a war general like Napoleon. So basically, it was Paulie trying to hold on to any image/feeling he's part of a greater good (when in reality he wasn't).
    The photo was meant to honor Paulie, in his home, not Tony. It had zero to do with Tony himself. That's why Paulie keeps starting at it, randomly, like every time he looks at it, its paying himself homage, and it makes him feel good.
    He figured Tony would never see it. That's why Paulie changed the painting. It wasn't to mock Tony and had nothing to do with Tony, outside the fact he works for Tony. It was about Paulie wanting to feel worthy and needed. That photo was his way of playing fantasy, when reality, he was becoming an older and useless person.

      If you read the research papers Dr. Melfi reads, after Elliot outs her treating Tony to their friends, it says that violent sociopaths tend to care about little children and animals as a means of proving to themselves that they're a good person. Killing Ralphie to revenge Pie-o-my is Tony's fucked up brain convincing himself that he is a moral and empathic person, thus allowing him to compartmentalise his criminality. It's why he wants the best for AJ and Jackie Jr and goes apeshit when they fuck up. It's why he's so sentimental about Italy and his ancestors the stonemasons. If i had to guess i'd say he didn't love Pie, he just loved the status of owning a racehorse and conflated that in his head with love.

    • @farmalmta
      @farmalmta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@johndcoffee632 Tony explains to Hesh why horses have it made, because they have a life opposite of what Tony has. Owning Pie-O-My was a way of trying to own the freedom and happiness that horses represent to Tony. When Ralph had Pie-O-My torched, he symbolically killed Tony's dream of being free of all his misery. Thus Tony's desperate murderous rage.
