You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice th-cam.com/users/postUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

Very innovative using the clear material to show the detail of the cutting action. I have really enjoyed the high speed series. You mentioned not being able to see a blades exit cut on a table saw. It made be think of building a tablesaw top out of clear acrylic to see what it looks like. Thanks for the great content.

I have been getting some significant tear out from my miter saw lately; I've been using the stock blade that came with my 12" miter. I've wanted to upgrade and have been doing some research but this video has been the most helpful. Thanks for providing this information and all of your knowledge in general with the videos you post. I just purchased the CMT 12" Miter Saw Blade you listed below.

This was a great video. Both the visuals and explanation gave me a much better understanding of why the blades for rip & crosscut are so different.
I would love to see a high speed of the blades that came with my handmedown table saw from the 70s (or earlier). They are just high-speed-steel essentially with no carbide.

Great video Jonathan, stuff we've experienced but not seen, now we have a visual. Another rough analogy on the rip vs. crosscut is the effect of the chainsaw tooth during those cuts. The rip cut produces a much longer chip/shaving , crosscut is short shredded chips. Those long rip cuts can really build up those shaved chips inside the saw. Granted, the miter saw/table saw is circular while the chainsaw is primarily a straight bladed cut but it does accentuate the dynamics.

Ripping blades are the bomb. That's all I keep on my tablesaw now. Like you, my Forest blade gave me a lot of trouble with burning. My saw claims to have a two horse motor, but I'm running it at 120 volts and it's pretty easy to bog it with the thick Forest blade. I'm thinking about getting a new 3 horse Sawstop, so maybe I'll break out the Forest again and see how it goes.

I was once looking for better blades to fit, only to find myself gutted, as I could not find any blades worth buying. I felt I'm stuck with factory blade. Not bad, as it's new, but it won't be as good as dedicated blades. Deep diving into CMT, I have found they have rip and cross cut blades suitable for my saw! So chuffed about it. Thanks again

I've been called an "accomplished woodworker" buy more than two people (literally three) and I learned so much from this video. Specifically, seeing the way the chips fill the gullets made the light switch flip that blades are called rip vs cross for a reason. Idiot me, smarter than everyone else, assumes more teeth better cut - the rest is just marketing wank to sell me stuff I don't need. I'm getting a few blades from your link, thanks so much.

My woodworking took a big step in the right direction when I put a ripping blade on my tablesaw. Face it, the vast majority of what you do on a tablesaw is ripping. Most of my crosscutting is done on a chop saw, so the ripping blade almost never comes off now. I was amazed at what an improvement it was over a combo blade.

The color and grain on all of your projects looks awesome, unlike mine. It's probably because I did not yet find a suitable lumber yard for quality wood in my are. Can you talk about where to buy hardwood and tricks for picking good ones?

Would be cool to see the dust collector pull the dust on the mitre saw in slow motion. Awesome video. I'll pass this on because even experienced carpenters just grab whatever saw with whatever blade and cut away. It matters in framing too because replacing blades can become costly in a hurry.

I have sharpened my Diablo blades a few times. I haven't had much issue. I would like to try the CMT blades, almost all of my router bits are CMT and they are great.

Good info. I know I have to purchase 6 more blades. The New Camera allows better videos.

I have an idea to catch the tear out. Make an acrylic zero clearance insert, then get the camera or that long lens whatever inside the cabinet from underneath, idk sounds good in my head. Anyway I love these slow mo videos. Thanks again for another informative and entertaining video.

It's super cool seeing the difference in blades!
If anyone in Canada looking for a blade sharpening place you should checkout All Blades Canada. They seem to sharpen everything and also can custom make bandsaw blades for you.

Jonathan makes the case that cheap blades ( I like Diablo ) are not worth the $50 price tag if you can't resharpen them several times, or at all. The lowest sharpening price I found in Ontario for a 50 tooth combination blade is $56.00 . All Blades Canada may have a better price, but they are only in the province of Alberta, so any shipping cost back and forth would negate any sharpening price. Diablo's last me quite a long time, so I'm happy to replace them when necessary and use the steel of the old blade for something else.

@@chrisgraham2904 I personally use Freud for my table saw and I think Diablo for my miter saw and I bought them at KMS tools which I think is also out east as well.
Keep an eye out because they will sometimes be 50% off.
Freud says that they can be sharpened 5 times.
I think also that if you get the results you like and expect from any blade then there is no reason to spend more on a blade than you need.
I have a Dewalt blade that came with my used table saw and for a long time it cut better than some of the first blades I bought that were around the $50-$60 Canadain mark
Just return them if they suck :)

Would raising the blade more on the table saw affect the “angle of attack” enough to make a combo blade a little better at ripping vs a low blade height? Cutting more perpendicular(down) rather than parallel(through) the board?

Very interesting. Did you happen to do any video on a crosscut blade with a negative rake angle? Also, I've seen Roy Underhill use a straw broom to demonstrate the wood fibers and others have used a bundle of straws. Thanks for the video. Take care.

We rip and cross cut an insane amount of red pine at my shop. We have to send all the blades off for sharpening about once every month

It would be amazing if you and Destin (smarter every day) could collaborate on a video like this. Imagine how much you (and we) would learn tying you woodworking experience to his ability to teach us mouth breathers "science stuff".

The first blades I got for my table saw was actually the CMT Orange Chrome blades since they seemed to be of good quality.. I started with a 96 Teeth crosscut blade and a 48 Teeth general purpose... I mostly cut plywood panels at the moment, hence the blade choices. I've yet to get a ripping blade, but that was mostly due to me not finding a 12" one in the orange chrome series... So I'm making due with my combo and crosscut for now.
Now I'm just on the lookout for a decent 12" Rip blade.
