    Thanks for your video...A couple of thoughts about rapid-o-graphs...I use them all the time and they do not have to be cleaned every time. If you keep them filled and closed they are good for a while. I usually clean them after a few fillings. BTW you NEVER want to take out that pin from the inside point! You can easily bend it and this destroys the point...They sell a bulb washer in a kit and the point can be screwed into the bulb and you suck water into and out of the point until the water runs clear. them dry and fill. Check it out...I only use the cleaning fluid if a point won't work after cleaning...thanks for your videos...Keep Drawing!

    @SongwindGlobal I think there's some kinda vacuum thing going on in the ink cartridge that gets broken once you plug in the tip. Not sure if refilling it will create the same vacuum effect, but I can give it a shot when the ink runs out.
    I've used Microns, Zigs, the fancy pants metal Staedtler, Copic liners or whatever they're called. They're all great initially. But eventually, the tips dull or fray or smoosh or just generally suck so you have to use more pressure to get a good line.

  • @TheJamieNoguchi
    @TheJamieNoguchi  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @SongwindGlobal Also, I don't have to use too much pressure when using the rapidographs so it's easier on my wrist and hand. When the felt tipped technical pens get a few weeks old, I gotta press down a little harder.
    But yeah, unless you're doing a lot of hand lettering or architectural drawings, I can't really recommend any rapidograph solution because of the price.

    Staedtler also used to make them and they were really good, I still have them to this day and it's been 20 years. I also bought at the time their ultrasonic cleaner machine and it solved the cleaning problem altogether. I wonder if all this is still available?

    the jewel tips are used on drafting on mylar or drafting film. The stainless steel tips tend to melt under the friction created when drawn across the harder surfaces.

    Excellent review - haven't used these pens for years - used to do all the cleaning you were talking about with the same pen you borrowed from your Grandfather - very useful to see the updates. BTW, when shaking the pen to activate a refill or cartridge it's recommended you do it horizontally because of the nib design and the capillary action.

    Here in England they are pronounced ra-peed-o-graf. The rotring pens are the original rapidograph pens. Koh-I-noor is a U.S. Subsidiary of Rotring. If you want pens that use ink rather than cartridges then Rotring make the Isograf pens - same price, same nib sizes available.
    If you use your pens a lot it is possible to put the Rotring bottled ink into an empty cartridge. I used to do this a lot in college to save cash. It's tricky but very possible to do (make sure you have a lot of cloth around in case of spills)

    • @fuzzypiglet
      @fuzzypiglet 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fellows Automobile According to Rotring they acquired KOH-I-NOOR Hardtmuth SpA in 1984.
      That company was originally Austrian and they relocated to an area now belonging to the czech Republic and after WW2 it became state owned (so it became Czech by default).
      Somewhere they were swallowed up - as were rotring, by larger companies. I think both companies are owned by larger american companies now. A bit confusing.

    • @ArtAntiDe
      @ArtAntiDe 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Even more confusing: Rotring purchased "KOH-I-NOOR Hardtmuth S.p.A. in ITALY". It seems they have/had sub-companies in every single country :) The Rotring website says that they actually produced the pens for the american market in the USA. Some other video on youtube said that this is discontinued however.

    I have the REALLY old piston-filler types. I never have any trouble getting them started-- you can use the piston to put pressure on the ink feed from behind, and I think dipping the whole tip in ink before pulling the plunger primes the feed or something. Never had them get clogged on me either. Not sure if I'm just lucky.

    Very good review! Thanks. I have the refillable Faber-Castell ones. I saw the rotring rapidograph cartridge ones online and they are expensive. I tell mine one every couple of days and although the cartridges look big, I can see how it would be rather expensive for my doodling use. Maybe I'll get one, dunno, but good review anyhow.

    I've only used regular water to clean out the rapidographs. I unscrew the whole assembly and then wash it all out and put it back together. Although, with the Rotrings I don't really need to clean them.

    Legendary artist Alex Toth used these alot when they first came out in all the different line width. BUT he would also file some of the tips down to get a nice calligraphic line with the pen. Saving my dough to try it out because I like what I see here so far

    • @TheJamieNoguchi
      @TheJamieNoguchi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's pretty cool! I didn't know that about Toth! I've moved on to a mostly digital workflow these days, but the rapidographs were great for lettering and small details like panel lines or some background stuff. I should get back to traditional media sometime.

    Good and informative review! I own the .13 Rotring Rapidograph (smallest tip) and it's DEAD. It stopped writing a consistent line so I flushed it with cleaner, still didn't work. When I shook it, a small globule formed at the tip, but still wouldn't write a line. I disassembled the insides and there was a super thin wire which was bent. I can't get it back inside correctly so it's worthless now. I don't imagine the larger tips fail, but I warn anyone with the .13 watch out.

  • @TheJamieNoguchi
    @TheJamieNoguchi  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Haven't used them myself, but Stadtler makes some quality drafting tools. I use a Stadtler lead holder for my penciling so if that's any indication, I'm certain the 700 series rapidographs are excellent.

  • @therealbigtasty
    @therealbigtasty 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You just kinda have to plan on the .13 size failing. Been using them for years, I just have about a dozen that I send back to Koh-i-noor for repairs. The Rotring ones don't really have a return for repair option.

    Is there any way to replace just the little tube in the tip that encloses the needle like wire ?

  • @EricHonaker
    @EricHonaker 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could you refill the ink cartridge using a syringe or something?
    I am currently lusting after a Rotring "art pen," which is basically a crow-quill type pen with an internal ink supply, with a refillable piston available to replace the cartridges.
    Have you tried any other technical pens, like a Staedtler or anything?
    At this point I think I'll stick with Microns or a Copic multiliner. I just don't feel any urge to do hand lettering at this point. :)

  • @TheJamieNoguchi
    @TheJamieNoguchi  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should be good. The ones I show in the video are older than that and work fine with a good cleaning. Certainly newer ones will be all sexy and such, but the old ones should work just as well if you care for them properly.

    Dude, Rapidograph is far beyond Microns. Professionals spend the money on professional instruments.

  • @aikanae1
    @aikanae1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What sizes are good? Can you refill cartridges with a syringe? I used to use 000 size in Koh-l-noor and would like to replace it but don't know the equivilant.
    If someone does a lot of inkwork, the rapidographs are more economical. The Microns wear out fast, I can see a difference in line width with every stroke and I find them very frustrating even trying to use them gently. The Microns are not cheap when needing to buy new all the time. They also feather more and don't produce as sharp of a line. Just wait. You'll get spoiled with rapidographs.

    • @TheJamieNoguchi
      @TheJamieNoguchi  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      aikanae1 Microns can be really infuriating sometimes. Although, I do like the line weight variation. It suits what I usually do with my ink work.
      That said, rapidographs definitely last longer. I'm also amazed at how many comments this video is getting! I did this so long ago! Not sure about your question about sizes or refilling with a syringe.

  • @farben_
    @farben_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really old video but do you know if you can put the nibs from the old Koh I Noor pens into the new style pens? I saw some old points on eBay that are really cheap but don't know if they will fit.

    • @DrawJam
      @DrawJam 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Answering from my art channel since I'm already signed in. I thought I lost track of my pens, but good news, I found them! It seems like the pen tubes have the same screw thread diameter so the old nibs will work in the newer tubes and vice versa. I don't think the needles are exchangeable, but the tubes appear to be cross generational.

    • @farben_
      @farben_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DrawJam That's amazing thanks! Yeah the screw thread seemed the same but sometimes a single groove is different and it no longer fits. My 00 pen is new style but is different from the current modern models, the nib is all metal but the threaded part is plastic.
      I want to try different sizes to find out up to what size the pen has to be perpendicular in order to make a line, the smaller sizes can draw at an angle but the larger they go the more vertical they have to be held, so buying the cheap tips would save a lot of money, a single tip on Amazon costs more than my KIN Rapidograph did.

    • @DrawJam
      @DrawJam 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@farben_ the one thing I don't know is if the ink will flow properly or just make a big mess. I don't have ink around to test that out, but I could see that being sort of a problem.

  • @dumpywhite
    @dumpywhite 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, great overview! I have sort of a silly question regarding rapidographs... more specifically a question about inks. I'm currently going back and forth between koh-i-noors "Rapidraw" and "Ultradraw" India inks, which work well; however, they dry to quite a shiny finish. Do you know of - or are you aware of - any inks that work well with Rapidographs and also dry to a matte finish? I find it sort of annoying when my details and my pure black fields dry antagonistically. Thanks!!

  • @peasubbage1639

    Umm what is the difference between a rapidograph pen and a regular fine liner or felt tip pen? Thanks

    • @TheJamieNoguchi
      @TheJamieNoguchi  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The width of your line will vary depending on the pressure you use when you work with a felt tip fine liner type pen. With a rapidograph, there is absolutely no line width variation no matter how hard or how light your press while drawing.

  • @nokiot9
    @nokiot9 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    So you can actually leave ink in that rotring? For like days on end without it clogging up? I don't believe it lol. It'd have to keep 100% of the air out of the ink chamber and nib system. How it snaps in like that might do it.

    • @DrawJam
      @DrawJam 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tommy Ohlrich As far as I can tell, when you snap in the cartridge, it creates an air tight seal which prevents the ink in the tube from drying. I haven't tried refilling the tube once it's been popped. But yeah, very little cleanup.

    Hey Jamie, good video. I'm currently lettering with Staedtler pigment liners (size 0.5), but they tend to give me a flourish at the end of horizontal lines where I lift the pen (which may be my fault). So I'm looking for alternatives and a rapidograph sounds fine. Just a couple of questions: Why do you use a size 1.0? Isn't that too wide for regular lettering? And since when is Koh-I-Noor producing in America? I thought they are from the Czech Republic.
    Anyway, looking forward to the next video!

    Unfortunately, I'm not too well versed on Rapidograph ink. I just use what's in the cartridge which has a glossy finish when it dries. Doesn't seem to make a difference when I scan it, but I can see where that would be annoying for black and white pieces. They r the moodiest pens I've ever used...sometimes they work, sometimes they dont. I use the smallest .01 and the wire is so small the smallest ammount of ink flow problems and it skips. Then u start flicking the tip, shaking it, making the ink come out heavier than normal. When they work good they r great, but they only work good 1 out of 5 times. I just went back to dip pens, but still have hope I can use my rotring rapidograph pen someday when I learn what I'm doing wrong with it lol
