I loved Megaforce when I was a kid. I was 8 when it came out. I didn't care about story or characters. Did you see how col those dune buggies were? Motorcycles with machine guns! These were the things that endeared this movie to 8 year old me.
I feel like a lot of early 1980s GI Joe toys were inspired by the equipment in this movie.
I had the same experience. I was the roughly the same age as you. Until now I couldn't tell you anything about the story, I think I was too young to realize it was supposed to be comedic.
Was a fun film, though I never realised it was intentionally a comedy.
The 'flying motorcycle ' at the end that enables the hero catch up with the plane.... ludicrous, but worth a giggle.
I always forget that Needham directed this.
I never saw it back in the day despite it's being advertised in every comic I bought. I finally viewed it a couple of years ago.

I remember all the young people back in the early eighties between 13 and 20 all saying "Have you seen Megaforce is the most awesome movie ever!" Many years later when you ask anyone about Megaforce no one claims to have seen it, even though every young man did.
Truth.
I had all but forgotten about this movie until a couple of days ago. Listening to an update about Ukraine, and they were talking about Russian forces increasingly relying on motorcycles to try and improve infantry mobility...and I thought, "Huh...did someone at the Kremlin stumble across a copy of Megaforce?"
