My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

    FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off TH-cam? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux

Thank you so much Jay! I have been coming to Paris for the last eight months as an airline pilot with lots of layovers. I have navigated Paris literally by watching your videos. How to use the metro, what to say at a restaurant, where to go, how to visit the sites and Bike About Tours! I arrived Friday, August 14 for a four-day layover with plans to visit Les Invalides today. Low and behold, I woke up this morning and you had a video on it. It was very easy to navigate after watching your video and not to mention which entrance to go in! Thanks for all that you do!

The multiple images of you and Sara on the cannons---fantastic! You are really far ahead of most (if not all) people posting on youtube. You accomplish a great deal with the video quality of these videos.

A propos an earlier conversation of ours... on the top level under the dome, just off camera is the tomb of Maréchal Foch - generalissimo of all allied armies from March 1918 onwards - the soldier who stopped the German advance at Amiens, brought WW1 to a close and officiated at the armistice 11th Nov 18. He left his mark on history though I'm not sure how many remember him today. Gives at least one more reason to visit Les Invalides.

Team Iphone here. I've owned iPhones for years starting with the 4S and now in the 11 Pro Max the learning curve is hella steep. Most likely you'll never get what you want using it with the settings out the box. The camera is a savage beast which must be tamed but worth every minute of the guts and glory.

Next time you make it to Les Invalides there is a section in one of the top floors, might be a huge attic, which has an exhibition with old scale models of French cities where major battles occurred. My family and I visited it last year. Les Invalides is a pretty cool attraction in Paris that some times doesn’t get as much mention as other sights. Thanks for posting!

    • @winkprince1875

Not really a collection of where battles occured, but rather a collection of models of all of the french fortified places, comissionned by King Louis XIVth who wanted to be able to inspect his fortified towns and forts without having to leave Versailles. The musée des plans reliefs (that's the name of that part of the army museum), only exposes a very small fraction of the entire collection though, with many being on loan in other parts of France.

#“World’s nerdiest bachelor party.” 😂 and another one #we want more of Sara, she is great addition to you content, she wants to be on camera, participate, doesn't mind to be silly, talks on camera. she is great, go for it. ( sorry, not sorry, to be nosy, but you are a great guy and you deserve to have somebody who support your efforts ). on the other hand love this museum, I had it on my list as a historical place for my children, but I believe this museum so interesting, Louvre has its own of course, but this one is sooooooo great,

A quick scan of the comments shows no one has mentioned it, but to get to the camera faster than unlocking it there are two options: press home the swipe left, or press home and swipe up then tap on the phone icon. When swiping up these are the widgets, and you can customize them and include the camera. The press-home-swipe-left is obviously faster, and might be something you need to set up in settings. Of course, since I'm behind in watching you may have already gotten that sussed out. Now to continue the video and look out for the doctor who reference (yay).

For people who don't undestand the "deification" of Napoleon, he was among the most important figure in human history, being a head of state and a great conqueror. Only Alexander the Great and Julius Cesar before him reached this level of power.

This is so cool! I spent hours in this museum with my son when he was 12, almost 13, and he came to visit me in Paris. He was (is) way into D&D and loved the Medieval section you were in. It is very impressive. We also enjoyed seeing Napoleon’s resting place. The music was completely on point as was the observation about Weeping Angels. Don’t get stuck in time like Rory and Amy!!! 😬😬😬 That is definitely one of my most favorite museums anywhere. I’m loving the iPhone footage, too. But I’m partial. It’s super crisp IMO, though. Sorry some of the files didn’t work. Maybe it’s something fixable? Maybe get them from the iCloud instead? Thanks for this- it was great! 🙏🏼👏🏼✨

iPhone tip 1: You can change the camera settings and select the last used feature, either video or photo, but I recommend you to not to do that. Keep it in photo mode, and whenever you want to shoot video, you can hold the shutter, and it will switch to video automatically, and you can even drag it to lock it in video mode. Pretty handy. iPhone tip 2: While in camera settings, you can change the shooting format from High Efficiency HEIF/HEVC to JPEG/H.264. The advantage of using the former is that the file size is smaller, so you'll have more storage space, but you'll have to deal with format conversion. Remember that you can't put an microSD card into an iPhone, but you can do download footage to an USB stick, with a proper adapter. Let me know if you want to learn more about that feature, and I'll contact you through Patreon message.

I'm glad you finally made this video. I've been interested in medieval armor for quite some time and I have a small collection, but, I'm definitely NOT an expert. But, to answer your question, one armor historian noted that the cost of a suit of armor of quality was about equivalent to what a luxury automobile would cost today. The cost would be a bit lower for "munitions" grade armor, but, it would still be quite pricey. Of course, the armor at the Musée de L'Armée is generally high to very high quality, so one and a half to two Tesla model S's. As you suggested, armor was symbolic of status and had a strong element of "bling."
The more I read of French history, the more I realize that despite his "faults," France would not be the France we know, if it hadn't been for Napoleon. He, Louis XIV and the "lumieres" seem to have had a profound effect on French culture. So, given the complications surrounding him, visiting his tomb is quite an experience.
By the way, for the rest of you who are struggling to learn French and interested in French history, this website has some quizzes that will help you. www.caminteresse.fr/tag/quiz/

The colors are definitely less saturated than with the Samsung. The world looks like a brighter place with the Samsung, but I think the iPhone colors are more realistic. I'm using an external monitor with very accurate colors, so I think what I'm seeing is correct. I honestly can't say which I prefer. My Samsung TV color is also a bit oversaturated, maybe Samsung has discovered it's something that pleases people.

Hi David!🙋🏻‍♀️ yeah, I kinda feel like it's looking at the world in matte vs gloss. It's early yet but I prefer the Samsung so far. That slo-mo was horrible! But maybe I'll change my mind in a side by side comparison.

I had the same thought about the Weeping Angels when I was there...(TBH, any statue of an angel now kinda freaks me out since I saw that Dr. Who episode.). The music was extra good today, and seeing Sarah was bonus points.

Ok, one more, for the medieval armour over which I'm all 😍😍😍. I think the smaller harnesses are for princes, dukes, etc when they were kids, and for show. Non-knights would have worn a combination of mail and gambeson if I'm remembering correctly (a kind of tightly padded, layered, protective jacket). This guy (th-cam.com/channels/MjlDOf0UO9wSijFqPE9wBw.html) has a lot of videos about knights and medieval life. Also an OBE, as you do.

@@JaySwanson I will say that the punchy-ness of Samsung's saturation can look bad at times but the iPhone is dull and buggy, you will fret on its reliability on the daily. Recommendation: Samsung Note 20 Ultra, you can use the S pen as a remote to go straight into video. Also, it has some handy mic options that should help with wind and whatnot. Anywho, good luck and thank you so much for all your Paris content MERCI MERCI. Here in America missing Paris.

Curious to see which of the two are more useful for you. Note: yes you can default the iPhone to video I just dont know about accessing as easy. Awesome video and song 🙌🙌🙌 merci!!!
Ps: I would’ve loved to visit Paris now with no tourists 😃😃😃

  • @crowfoot1199
    @crowfoot1199 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Wow that tomb is something else. And I always appreciate a Doctor Who reference! 🤓 Re the phone, I prefer the iphone footage to the Samsung - that wide angle lens is something else - partially because I don't like things overly saturated. I'm sure you can change that in the app - but I'm not sure if you can get it to be the default. Weird little blue rectangular lens flare going on sometimes tho, but better than the massive lens flare on the Samsung. Interesting to see how it handles similar lighting conditions.
Regarding the wind - the mic is on the bottom so if you hold it with your palm cupping the mic maybe that would help (obviously not with your palm right ~on~ the mic lol). Same way you cupped the ozmo whatsit.

awesome! We have been there 7 years ago with a High school kids trip from Quebec Canada. We now live in Florida but can't wait to go back. We've been the early May but my question to you is what would be the best months/weeks to visit Paris? little to no tourist, not to cold or hot, basically the best time. We don't mind wearing a little jacket.

  • @tohism
    @tohism 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Really enjoyed that. I’ve had to skip napoleons tomb on my visits. I’ll have to visit when they let us. The iPhone looks better. The saturation on the other phone was a bit much. Love the Doctor Who référence. Now that there aren’t tourists around do you know if some of the Angels in Paris are moving around more throughout the city?

Wow, love your visit to Les Invalides, feel intimidated thru your lens, I can only imagine what is like in person. Anyhoo, the iphone looks better than the Samsung when it comes to colors both indoor / outdoor in my opinion but check out 2:35 - 2:37, the color shifted. It also happened on your first iphone video - go to Apple Store and show them the footages and ask for exchange ???? Have a wonderful day, stay cool.

The tomb of US President Ulysses Grant and former commanding general defeating the confederate army during the US civil war has a tomb in NYC that was modeled after Invalides. It has the dome, the statuary of his generals surrounding him and two sarcophagi, one for him and one for his wife, Julia. It is breathtaking as is this one.
