These guys were SO damn good. Of course some 80's listeners didn't like them. It happens. The Smithereens were not flashy, there were no gimmicks, they didn't have that 1 "stand out" musician like Eddie, Tommy, etc...... These guys would play live and sound like their records! That is called "talent". They were a group of musicians who did not "overplay" their instruments, they inter-played among the song in such a way it came together as a cohesive whole. They had clever lyrics, they were tight and there note structures, timbres and rhythms came together to flat-out kick ass. To this day they are one of my very most favorites! RIP Pat. The great ones go too soon....... You and your band-mates made a huge splash in the musical landscape among listeners bright enough to tell the difference between true Rock Music and the drivel that was being called Rock.
I don't agree. They got a lot of MTV airplay and were popular. I remember during my band days walking the rock clubs in Fort Lauderdale and they were always coming on. But not every band is an arena band.
It's not a biggie. My husband would be one of those people and guess what he's not into music at all.His taste is like AC DC basically only!!These people(my husband anyway)know nothing about music. The Smithereens were one of Kurt Cobains favorite rock n roll groups so there you have it!❤
I am still heartbroken. But I am thrilled that 'JIMMY!!!!' and Denis and Mike keep the flame alive....Rock and Roll will never die....NOR WILL THE SMITHEREENS!!!!....THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD!!!!!
I met Pat 6 years ago at a "Living room concert" in St. Louis.. I had the privilege of hanging out with him all night. He's one of the most amazing guys in the music industry,, yet so grounded and humble.. 101% AWESOME GUY !!!
Man, this band was tight! Jim's looking like the world is right, he's respecting it; Dennis looks like he's seated behind the wheel of a Ferrari toward the end; Pat just doing what he does, and Thrilla just impressing the hell out of me...great tune and great video...thanks!
Back when rock n roll was going to hell the SMITHEREENS came along with the muchh needed heavy guitar sound. We cranked up our FM radios and rejoiced! Still rocking and still great!!
Love this song. Nice kiss off song. Incendiary lead. The whole album is solid. Glad to see they toured with Tom Petty. Rest in Peace Pat. Thank you for the songs.
Great show in Wilmington Delaware last night. Guitarist Jim Babjak's son told me this was a great song - And he's right. The whole band has class. Great meeting you guys . Mike P
You look at these guys, and how easily they float along as they play their instruments with such ease and confidence, and you can see the fruition of the decades of experience they've had. They're true musicians. They have a true love and friendship for each other, and despite his predicament, Pat is completely at home in a business that dictates bodily appearance and has no fear. Despite what some will say (and have said) Pat's heart will always be the biggest part of him. I hope these guys have many more years together!
My band had the honor to open for these guys a few years ago. Gentlemen all. Pat was the sweetest guy ever in Rock and Roll. He was a brilliant singer and songwriter and his sense of melody was impeccable. I wish I had that ability. They are all professionals, but they dig in like nobodies business. They beleive themselves to be a metal band! True! Jim B. and I polished off a bottle of Scotch together late into the night. Long live Pat Dinizio and The Smithereens!
Sheer rock-and-roll mastery! One of things that distinguishes the Smithereens is their big, thick guitar sound and their ability to subtly vary the rhythm at different points in the song, giving it an agile, "cooking" feel. These guys are awesome.
Nothing flashy....just good old rockin and rollin. And one of the best parts is they are watchable. For the most part, one really can't say that when it comes to the world of rock. So many thanks for sharing these guys.
the Smithereens - on of the greatest Rock n roll bands of the last 40 years - Pat DiNunzio - one of the greatest Rock n roll songwriters of all time - Period.
I have loved these guys since the eighties. I remember playing Green Thoughts on cassette, driving around the campus where I was at law school. This song is absolutely fantastic!
So good and so many memories, backing up Pat in Portland and at the Stone Pony, hanging backstage at the Blue Ocean music hall, man, singing their songs got me through college and they were great to the very end. RIP Pat. Pete from Portland.
The only time they appear on radio these days is on The Mike Francesa Show if he's doing a live remote somewhere. They are one one of rock's most underrated bands of the past three decades.
After over 30 years in the business you can tell they are really having fun now. What a great sound and the writing is A-1. It makes me happy, and I want to dance. Thank You Guys.
As a member of another middle aged band, I can say rock on! We seem to be the only ones that understand rock and roll. The bands today just seem full or rage, pathos, or stupidity. Thanks guys for keeping the music alive.
Saw them in Johnstown, PA last weekend and they were phenomenal!! Played for nearly two hours long and the crowd was just rocking the entire time; in fact, there was just this guy, around 70, who was at the front of the stage with his cane in one hand, raising his fist and just flat out rocking!! Jim was stellar on guitar and Dennis is still a beast on the skins!! Incredible show, so glad I got to see them.
this track should be pumping out of every car this summer. it's great to have a new collection of Smithereens songs; let's not have to wait twelve years for the next one.
Great song and the whole album or disc is strong ! I am 54 and I have listened to all the classic rock. The Smithereens are in my top 10 of all time. I just love that poppy well crafted sound they have. Let's hope they are working on another album release SOON !!!!
Mark R I saw these guys at the Stockton Asparagus festival. Nobody was there. I would have been pissed but it was like I had the Smithereens all to myself. Love this band and their music.
I've been a Smithereens fan since 1989...my senior year in high school, when I first saw the video for "Only A Memory" on MTV (remember when they actually played MUSIC VIDEOS instead of "all reality shows all the time"). I had their "Green Thoughts", "11", and "Blow Up" CD's, as well as a greatest hits CD. Love the Smithereens' music...simple, basic, and real. You don't need a synthesizer and/or auto-time when you've got real talent.
Damn, how could i have been so stupid?I had only ever listened to "Blood and Roses"...I could have been enjoying the rest of their music all along.Oh well,I was late to the party but I got here eventually!
such a catchy great song Pat was a master of the great melodie one of the best underated songwriters in rock history may he rest in peace. I agree Rich some music fans are just stupid The Smithereens were so much better than a lot of crappy rock bands who sold more records in the late 1980's or 1990's.
Once upon a time, rockers who were unattractive STILL could be appreciated for their talent. I miss those days. Now, it's all about how attractive the lead singer is, and whether or not record labels can get teen girls to listen or buy the image of a new band. RIP Pat. I learned to be a romantic guy from your lyrics.
WOW! I didn't even KNOW they have a new 'album' out! Very 'hooky', energetic, fun, and youthful! Real live bands like 'The Smithereens' are carrying the rock torch with aplomb! My cheeks and neck HURT from smiling so much while shaking my head back and forth after watching this video about 20 times! I just ordered the CD.
Just heard this for the 1st time on WFUV's top 100 of 2011 ... I love it. If they hadn't written these lyrics, I would have! I'm now a Smithereens fan :)

It baffles me how two people don't like this. Smithereens are a national treasure!
RIP PAT
I agree, I always wondered how they weren't more popular when they were better than most bands out there
It's not a biggie. My husband would be one of those people and guess what he's not into music at all.His taste is like AC DC basically only!!These people(my husband anyway)know nothing about music. The Smithereens were one of Kurt Cobains favorite rock n roll groups so there you have it!❤
I like them!!
RIP Pat DiNizio. Sing it loud upstairs!😥
I am still heartbroken. But I am thrilled that 'JIMMY!!!!' and Denis and Mike keep the flame alive....Rock and Roll will never die....NOR WILL THE SMITHEREENS!!!!....THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD!!!!!
My friends!
so many fantastic songs
Love this song so powerful
why arent these guys more well known? they should be mentioned up there with the greats. baffles my mind.
These guys kick ass.
The perfect pop song…
I love how these guys are just down to earth regular people who play f-ing awesome music....so raw and real !
They sound just as good as they did in the 80s! Not a lot of bands can do that through the decades...
Rest in peace, Pat. We will miss you.
The greatest drummer in rock and roll is right here--Dennis "Drop The Bomb" Diken (also known as "The Crusher From Carteret")!
Their sound here is the result of a lifetime of working on their craft and growing both individually and collectively. Beautiful.
RIP Pat. Met him at Milano's bar in NY, nicest guy in the world
I met Pat 6 years ago at a "Living room concert" in St. Louis..
I had the privilege of hanging out with him all night. He's one of the most amazing guys in the music industry,, yet so grounded and humble..
101% AWESOME GUY !!!
Pat is a team player, not a prima donna. Why spoil a good thing? Obviously these guys are the closest of friends as well as band mates.
missing you today, pat. xx
This track isn't just a song, it's a work of art
Man, this band was tight! Jim's looking like the world is right, he's respecting it; Dennis looks like he's seated behind the wheel of a Ferrari toward the end; Pat just doing what he does, and Thrilla just impressing the hell out of me...great tune and great video...thanks!

Gone too soon Pat! RIP you will not be forgotten.
God Save The Smithereens!!!!! And to echo others' comments, talked to Pat after a show, and he is a super nice guy.
Great show in Wilmington Delaware last night. Guitarist Jim Babjak's son told me this was a great song - And he's right. The whole band has class. Great meeting you guys .
Mike P
Honest Rock and Roll. RIP Pat 1955-2017
You look at these guys, and how easily they float along as they play their instruments with such ease and confidence, and you can see the fruition of the decades of experience they've had. They're true musicians.

wheres the :"LOVE" Icon..Lucky you great story
Blue collar, working man's rock....I love it.
Sheer rock-and-roll mastery! One of things that distinguishes the Smithereens is their big, thick guitar sound and their ability to subtly vary the rhythm at different points in the song, giving it an agile, "cooking" feel. These guys are awesome.
I love all their songs and grew up listening to them ..the true rock band ahead of their times ready to rock the world 🌍
Awesome! What a great combination, the Smithereens and Don Dixon. I hope this album blows up the charts.
give em hell smithereens. this should be the song of the year.
Nothing flashy....just good old rockin and rollin. And one of the best parts is they are watchable. For the most part, one really can't say that when it comes to the world of rock. So many thanks for sharing these guys.
They keep making the same song over and over…but it’s such a damn good song.
the Smithereens - on of the greatest Rock n roll bands of the last 40 years - Pat DiNunzio - one of the greatest Rock n roll songwriters of all time - Period.
Great to see the Boyz putting out some new original material.... Sorry sounds like a winner.
This song should be a tutorial for new bands on how to write a decent song. Keep rocking Smithereens!
These guys always bring it. So fortunate to have seen these guys several times
no one creates power pop with consistent hooks the way these guys do.
I have loved these guys since the eighties. I remember playing Green Thoughts on cassette, driving around the campus where I was at law school. This song is absolutely fantastic!
GOD BLESS THE SMITHEREENS!!!!
Robbie Cadwell. you got that right
smithereens and social D on tour ,wouldn't that be a great show

been a huge fan since the beginning... always felt commercial radio underserved them!
The only time they appear on radio these days is on The Mike Francesa Show if he's doing a live remote somewhere. They are one one of rock's most underrated bands of the past three decades.
R.I.P Pat.....
After over 30 years in the business you can tell they are really having fun now. What a great sound and the writing is A-1. It makes me happy, and I want to dance. Thank You Guys.

This is fucking awesome. One of the best powerpop bands ever. Long live the Smithereens!
THESE guys have always sounded awesome. One of my Favorites pure and simple.
I've been a Smithereens fan since 1989...my senior year in high school, when I first saw the video for "Only A Memory" on MTV (remember when they actually played MUSIC VIDEOS instead of "all reality shows all the time"). darkfey1963 Not "stupid", just "not aware." It's never too late to find and appreciate the good stuff!
Thank you! My ears work and this is definitely good stuff!
darkfey1963 Many did not like "A Date with the Smithereens" It was a great album, though some of the songs were "dark"
I did the same thing...
I have been digging these guys for 20 years and can't get enough of them.
Totally rocks! This song has "hit single" written all over it!
Yet another GREAT Smither-Tune, and CD, to add to my ongoing collection! YEAH BABY!!! :)
Awesome. And teaming up with the legendary Don Dixon!
The Smithereens ROCK THE HOUSE!!
such a catchy great song Pat was a master of the great melodie one of the best underated songwriters in rock history may he rest in peace. I agree Rich some music fans are just stupid The Smithereens were so much better than a lot of crappy rock bands who sold more records in the late 1980's or 1990's.
Unfortunately I didn't dig the Smithereens until around 2010, they're a fantastic band. R.I.P. Pat, you are missed
Produced by my hero Don Dixon.... who has given us so many great songs through producing bands to their best as well as his own great stuff
great tune, great band and terrific live. Saw them in Old Saybrook Ct. and they Rocked !

I love it when us old guys come through!!! :0)
Just heard this for the 1st time on WFUV's top 100 of 2011 ... I love it. If they hadn't written these lyrics, I would have! I'm now a Smithereens fan :)
Missing Pat even though I never met him. RIP.
