    +QRadde Yes, after your settlement generates a certain amount of scrap
    per item, it stops generating it. I don't have exact numbers for you,
    but just for example, let;s say that your settlement produces 3
    ballistic weave each day. After your settlement produces, say, 25, it
    stops producing that item. So there will be a point when your scavenger
    stations bring no return.

  • @oxhorn
    @oxhorn  8 ปีที่แล้ว +281

    +QRadde Yeah. I read somewhere that you only need 1 scavenging station.
    Any more than that, and your settlement does not produce more scrap.
    Worse than that, there is a scrap ceiling. Once your settlement has enough scrap of a certain type in the workbench, your settlers stop generating scrap altogether. The same goes for purified water and food. This means that if you want to get full use out of your settlements, you have to empty each settlement's workbench every other day or so, to keep the settlers working. Which is annoying as heck. What a stupid limitation by Bethesda.
    I plan to run another experiment to prove this one way or another. Stay tuned.

    • @GhostStalker1983

      So the limit for water is like 1-2 times the produce or something? Because I don't I have ever had more than the one time produce in any of the settlements that have lots of extra water produce. And it seems to take 2-3 days for it to produce again. Waiting seems to work for water at least, if I now remember it correctly.

    So.. There's scrap limits (caps) at each settlement, right? And same for purified water.. so, like, when you hit the limit, where do you put the stuff? I'm assuming if you put it back in a workbench it will just max out the limit again. So I suppose you could put it all in one settlement? and just have that settlement maxed out and have no scavenging stations there? Or move all the scrap into a container, but then you have to go get it every time you want to build something? Can you put it in a different workstation? does this count towards the scrap-cap? Aren't all the workstations linked?.. I'm confused...

    • @loosegasket
      @loosegasket 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I realize this is rather late, but... yes, you can leave it all in containers that you've made which can be left by the workbench if you want to dump things back in for easy crafting and yes, you would have to get it back out to craft something with it. Yes, you could also dump everything in one settlement so the others produce scrap endlessly, assuming you don't mind the tedium of all the constant trips. You could also put a vacuum hopper (or whatever it's called) next to your workbench and set up a sorting network that pieces junk, food, etc. out by type and puts them in conveyor storage devices or feeds them into scrap machines or production devices like the weapon forge and whatnot. You can also just leave it in the workbench and craft tons of stuff, which drains the resources and allows more scavenging, but this does have the issue of giving you little control over what workbenches are empties (at least to my knowledge.) Or you can get the Uncapped Settlement Surplus mod and and be a Settlement Tycoon. Scavenging stations just increase the effectiveness of scavenging, which unassigned settlers do automatically anyway. Generally speaking, having more than five scavenging stations is basically useless most of the time unless you like traveling between settlements and collecting and using the resources they stock. That's my experience anyway. Hope it helps.

    So if a settlement reached its limit on wood, does it continue to gather, let's say, steel, or do stations stop working altogether?

    • @loosegasket
      @loosegasket 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      According to Nukapedia, they stop working altogether. From my personal experience, it seems that scavengers (and unassigned settlers, who are also scavengers that just are not as good as someone assigned to a station) generate items somewhat randomly and if an item that you have capped out on is generated, then the scavenger generates nothing at all regardless of what else would have been generated. Furthermore, when it comes to junk items, it appears to consider the item ID (i.e. the items themselves) rather than the resources you can get for them. I've had settlements generate 100 desk fans, which for example work out to about 200 screws, before halting. It also seems to me that scavenging stations have diminishing returns, and more than about five or six produce little-to-no additional scrap. I believe a this was also noted in a later video on this channel (one about shops and money production, I think.) On survival mode, this cap is rather lower than the 100 of the base game (seems to cap out at around 25-ish, but others have reported it halts at 50.)

    We need a property experiment with consistent and repeatable tests.
    1. We need a control.
    Do a test with no Scavenger Stations. Exactly 24 hours ingame hours away from the settlement.
    2. A test with 1 Scavenger Station. Keep note of every item scavenged.
    3. A test with 2 Scavenger Stations. Is the yield double that of test 1? Are the items scavanged the same?
    Maybe multiple settlers can find more rare items.
    4. 10 Scavenger Stations.
    Is the yield 10x test 2? Better items?
    5. Test if there's a cap.
    Be away from the settlement for 5 days, then 10 days, then 30 days. Is the yield consistent every day?
    The important thing with an experiment is to always have a control. Testing with no Scavenger Stations first is vital. Some items might get into the workbench for other reasons. Brahmin on site produces fertiliser, water purifiers produces water bottles.

    That's interesting. I couldn't be arsed to build up every settlement after I claimed them. Most of them are empty. The only ones with anything built in them are ones that I can't send the inhabitants to another one so they are self reliant. I have spectacle island set up as a gigantic farm with 4 large water purifiers in it with the max amount of settlers farming. I have sanctuary as my main trader hub with every vendor available there plus random stuff for them to do. Every one of them is self sustaining with food and water. I have a really rather oppressive "work camp/gulag" at starlight drive-in where I send all the NPCs I hate to where they only have a dirty mattress and a scavenger station next to it (along with just enough food and water to sustain them, but they are still somehow happy to be there) and everything is connected together with robot provisioners from the mechanist lair so I have access to everything at every settlement in case I need to use it. Jamaica plain is my player home which is an indominable fortress where I have my collection of like 40 power armors and every companion available in the base game lives, plus shaun's synth so I can swap them out as I please. Spectacle island produces and delivers tons of food and water, which is ultimately un-needed since every settlement has their own, but I did it for RP reasons, starlight drive in delivers assloads of scrap, sanctuary is where I come to collect caps and trade at all the level 4 vendors. My main character has done almost everything that can be accomplished on a single character (minuteman run) and I also did a brotherhood run, but I have a new file where I went straight to nuka world as soon as I hit level 15 or so, deliberately avoiding everything related to the main quest to become the overboss and see that DLC through to the end as the evil route. Since you can't really BE an evil raider type through the main quest (and that's not my style either), I plan to turn on the raiders as a "reformed raider" once I meet preston after I get tired of doing the raider stuff. Now that I know so much more about settlement building and game mechanics than I did from the first main run that has like 400 hours on it, I plan to set things up as efficiently as possible. I don't know if you or anyone who might read this gives a damn about my RP story but the angle I am working with is my "evil" character wakes up to find the world ended and thinks all is lost and goes raider in nuka world, and then when she sees hope and good people still exist, will make a turn around and go wipe out the raiders and I'll use the opportunity to play the game a different way than I did before. I've been watching a shitload of your videos for a few weeks now and I'm glad to see how much effort you put into everything on here. I love how deeply you dig into all the lore stuff. Really makes me think more about all the stuff I did and visited in the game.

      They did, but their coding makes your supplies be a part of the math for your chances of the settlement being attacked. Before Nuka World, they likely had it turned into a comment accidentally. After Nuka World, they fixed it. So, if you remove the limit OR put too many resources into the settlement, you can go over 100% chance, before the rest of the mat, by a significant amount. So much so that the lowering of the chances caused by your defenses and population doesn't lower it below 100%. Oxhorn found that out the hard way, and actually had over 600% chance for a settlement to be attacked every 7 days due to his no resource cap mod.

    When you empty it, what do you do with it? Use it for other settlements?

    • @CNSninja
      @CNSninja 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Remember in Skyrim (if you played it,) how there were certain "safe" crates or barrels throughout the world where you could store extra items without them being despawned each day? I wonder if there are any crates/boxes/etc. in the Fallout 4 world that work similarly, where you can store workshop materials so they don't despawn. The problem with creating storage in a settlement and trying to store it all there is obviously that it seems like all stored junk in a settlement are accessible throughout all the various benches etc.
      It could be as simple as setting up a steamer trunk or floor safe, or whatever your favorite storage choice is, and simply moving everything from the workbench into the steamer trunk each day.

    • @skyrimwithguns8112
      @skyrimwithguns8112 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CNSninja Theoretically yes, that's all you need to do. Build a container next to the workbench & periodically empty items your settlement is producing en masse, such as purified water. The workbench won't access items in containers for crafting, & I presume therefore that it won't count them when deciding if it's reached a "production ceiling" for a given item. Alternatively, sell your excess to merchants I guess.

      @METALFREAK03 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skyrimwithguns8112 but whats the point? if you are not using the scrap, then theres no point making it. Also if it was easy to gain scrap via the ai doing it for you, you wouldn't play the game and loot. The game is essentially a looting RPG, its based around loot. If you're not playing and looting, the game might and well be forgotten about and you play a city builder or something.

    • @skyrimwithguns8112
      @skyrimwithguns8112 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@METALFREAK03 I've reached a point where I can buy bulk building materials (wood/steel/concrete) with money made by stores, so I find I only need to salvage rare scrap items out in the world now.
      I use scrap stations because they also generate small amounts of rare scrap items. (I'm talking about things you can't buy from merchants in shipments). The most valuable of all (a combination of it's rarity vs usefulness) is aluminium.
      But, in generating a decent amount of aluminium, the scrap stations are generating surpluses of everything else. Eventually I'm going to start hitting that storage ceiling in my bigger settlements (production will stop), & will have to move/sell stuff in order to have space to keep producing the rarer stuff (aluminium, fibre optic etc.)

    • @oxhorn
      @oxhorn  8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      +Mateusz Kwietowicz I agree that is how it should work, but sadly it does not work that way. If it did, then every settlement would have the same resources.
      Instead, every workshop retains its own unique set of resources. All the supply lines do is give you access to scrap found in other settlements from any settlement.

    Hey all, I have a question: do settlers assigned to Scavenging Stations collect physical junk from around the settlement?
    For role-playing reasons, I like to keep or avoid scrapping certain junk items in my settlement for decoration or to bring out an effect. I have also dropped junk I gathered from other places to decorate my interiors.
    I am afraid that by assigning settlers to Scavenging Stations they might scrap those "junk" items I left out intentionally.

    ...but this did *not* prove that you have to actually play for those twenty-four hours. You, yourself, pointed out a third possibility, but never tested it in this video. You still need to provide footage of you using the wait function *somewhere outside of the settlement in question,* then coming back to check whether or not there's scrap. Because you spent all of that playtime outside of the settlement, it's still possible that the only requirement is *you not being there.*
