@@mlb12041998 The 90s TV version of Clark said, "Superman is what I can do. Clark is who I am." He WAS Clark Kent (Jonathan and Martha's son) and wanted to be liked for the "real" person - which is why he didn't want to tell Lois he was Superman during the time that she was in love with Superman and dismissive of Clark (and later she actually starts to have feelings for Clark.) But on the other hand, given what we know about his powers, he obviously doesn't really need the glasses, so the only reason for choosing to wear them is to make himself look nerdier and hide the resemblance to Superman. Actually, in the 90s show it seems like he had glasses before he even started being Superman.
They don't recognize him without the glasses because he plays 'the attitude' in such a convincing way no one can make the connection, what a master !!!
I've always thought that George's vision of Clark Kent was spot on as a guy you'd want to shoot pool with on a Saturday night. For me, it was Clark's natural, quiet confidence that showed he didn't need to do the fumbling buffoon routine to hide the fact that he was Superman. Kent's being just another guy was understated just enough that most people wouldn't connect him to Superman. Thanks to George Reeves, Clark Kent was no punk. It is heartbreaking to no end that George didn't live long enough to see how genuinely beloved he really was. I miss him.

Not to be a purist by from the very beginning in the comic books, Clark Kent was portrayed as a weakling who fled from every fight. Even something mild like a gangster cutting in on Clark's dance with Lois depicted him giving in and earning her scorn. The dual character of Zorro was the same: Feign weakness to divert suspicion. And yet... somehow, some way, George Reeves made this more confident version of Clark Kent work with his easy charm and likeable manner. These episodes are a delight thanks to him and the cast.
That's similar to season 5 of the Incredible Hulk in the two Godmothers episode where Bill Bixby gets his hand crushed by a falling Boulder and transforms into the Incredible Hulk (now Lou Ferrigno ) and his hand is still crushed.
How and why would Superman pretend to be a regular Joe like Clark Kent? He's basically a god. Clark and Superman just happen to look similar. Irony aside, the glasses actually work. One of the unique features of The Adventures of Superman was the portrayal of Clark Kent as the hard-hitting crime-beat reporter who hung out with the chief of police, rather than the ineffective character in the comics (and later portrayals). This worked for the series because Clark was on stage much more of the time than Superman was - itself a wise decision. Save Superman for the special times he's needed.

George Reeves was the best Superman, so much like the comic books especially this particular episode,, love the look on George Reeves face when he knocked the Bell off the strongman Sledgehammer strength test. This particular show at the circus could have been in Adventures of Superman comic book.
Thinking the exact same thing lol. Three ace reporters, especially Perry White, who's only been in the business 40 years. What a sympathetic boss to work for he is,! And Lois, who always suspected Clark was Superman anyway! Way to put 2 + 2 together guys, you deserve raises all of you! To $30/week!! Great Caesar's 👻 Ghost!
This was before meeting Superman up close so they really didn't know what he looked like. But it's the not recognizing him later in the series is what baffled me.
I watched this when I was 5 or 6 I am 68 now and it is shown on Heroes and Icons Network on Sunday mornings and I still love to watch it. As I got older and watched in reruns, then George Reeves became my first crush.
To all those who ask, why can't they see Clark Kent as Superman without his glasses. That question was answered in an old Superman comic book. The mind control is almost the answer. When he looks at people through his glasses, it has a hypnotic affect on the person he looks at. They see him differently than what he really looks like. It's the effect of the lenses. They were made from the window of the spaceship that brought him to Earth. Like his costume, indestructible because it was made of the blankets he was wrapped in when he came to Earth.
Manuel: I was going to provide the same information until I read your comment. There was also a time when people kept asking about how his x-ray vision could create fires. Then, DC comics just started referring to an additional power of "heat vision." When people were wondering about what he did with his Clark Kent clothes, the explanation was he compressed them and kept them in a pouch inside his cape. Over the past few years I have purchased all of the Superman Silver Age comics from October 1960 up to November 1970. I also have every Action Comic from June 1960 up to December 1970. Needless to say I had to pay far more than 10 cents, and then 12 cents per copy.
Although the premise[that no one recognized Clark's real idendity] was absurd--yet it was also humorous.. I loved the series and watching the episodes reminded me of my happy childhood[I grew up in the 1950's]
Wow just seeing the late murdered George reeves and the late Noel Neil working together just as they did 66 years back to today is the best and cleanest possible way to have TV in black and white and 3 years later technicolor itself too bad all the Superman characters are dead including Christopher reeve (dead at 52,2004) and Margot kidder (dead at 69,2018) that is too bad we'll miss them forever forevermore oh well but their performances and characters live on in our hearts and minds for years to come hopefully that simple peace and blessings to you all.
I just discovered this and the very first episode of Superman. Today is 9-11-2019 18 years since we needed Superman. The captian went on to play bad guys in the old westerns. Steven Brant Yeah and unlike Chris Reeves, he acted the same as Kent as when he was Superman, no real change in attitude, voice, posture or goofiness. Sorry, but I always felt he had no interest in Lois, liked Jimmy better, in these old shows. IN that one clip I would have thought Supes was being an ass not saving Clark immediately- yeah, OK you're drowning hang on, I'll get to saving you, be patient ! - WTH.
Superman was always close to blowing his cover as Clark Kent on this show, especially when he speaks. In one episode, Superman rescues Lois and says, if you all excuse me, I gotta get back to the office. The office asks Lois,Yes, I gotta help Clark Kent write a series of articles. It worked, no further inquiry.
Lois is obviously the worst investigative reporter on Earth. I grew up with this show, and loved the entire cast. My kids hated it, Superman didn’t battle any aliens.
@@garycwelch6782 You also have to look at where American culture was at the time. Teachers and policemen were in positions of authority. Almost everyone trusted their government. Television never showed men and women sleeping in a single bed, and so on. That was the formula for TV programs then. Did you ever see any blood on people who got shot in a western? Rarely, if at all. And the Lone Ranger pretty much always shot the guns out of the hands of the bad guys. There is Hollywood fantasy and there is the real world. Big difference.
As a kid watching "The Adventures of Superman" it never occurred to me that wooden belaying pins on the pirate ship could be twisted into handcuffs by Superman as if they were metal. Did neither Lois or Jimmy ever see the remarkable resemblance between Clark Kent and Superman? No, not ever. Noel Neill remarked that if everyone wanted to keep their jobs nobody would ever notice.
07:32 The story goes that George Reeves was supposed to dunk Jack Larsen but that George impishly and unexpectedly yanked Noel Neill into the drink which explains why she, surprised, squawked like a parrot when she hit the water,
if that was the case they would've re-shot the scene. No, it makes sense the way it is. If you notice when George comes up from the depths he climbs the ladder but his face is still hidden to Jim and Lois while he's under the plank, otherwise it would've strained credibility to the audience that Jimmy and Lois didn't recognize him. [*Notice they don't question how Clark held his breath so long.] Remember before Superman departed he told them he wouldn't be coming back. The fact that he pulls her into the water solidifies his goofy or cowardly behavior, not to us in the audience, but to Lois. Just great writing.
@@deepseadirt1 Lois was beginning to suspect that Clark was Superman, but before she could complete the thought, he clumsily dropped her into the water and she forgot the whole thing.

This worked for the series because Clark was on stage much more of the time than Superman was - itself a wise decision. Save Superman for the special times he's needed.
There were several times when it was as Clark, that the crime was solved. That showed the real intelligence of Superman.
All class acts! Noelle and Jack both embraced the Superman movie franchise, respectively!
He was the best superman ever.
Lois: "Never mind Clark ... never mind ... it just couldn't be!!!!" Lol!!!
Lois was getting wet and Clark/Superman didn't pound Lois's pudding..
My wife was born in Japan and came to the States late 64 and I guess Seattle didn't show it. I am glad that I was the one to show her the show. Willie😊😯
i love old classics
R.I.P. George Reeves, Jack Larson, John Hamilton, Noel Neill, & Robert Shayne
Love the old SUPERMAN tv shows
I have the entire season's on DVD...Love it!
Noel Neill was so pretty.
Greatness here. Watching with appreciation and a smile on my face. Oh, and he was murdered IMO.
I always enjoyed Reeves' portrayal of Clark; quiet, but confident, capable and very much his own person, outside of the more obviously Alpha Superman.
George Reeves was the only superman I knew since I was growing up in the early 1960's, and there will never be another superman and there will never be another George Reeves who played superman until his death in 1959, R.I.P. George Reeves and all the actor's who played on the adventures of superman, god bless there souls. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
We need more villains like the captain at 4:22. Lol.
"Captain don't, you can't...."
"SHADDUP!!!"
LMAO!!!
Man, looked straight at the dude without his glasses on and didn't say, "He looks exactly like Superman without his glasses on! Hey, wait a minute!"
I know, I thought the same, this show was just terrible!! Just like that 90s rubbish with Dean Cain, the only Superman is Christopher Reeve as far as I'm concerned, he is the only one who who had it, that look, he really did look like the one in the comic, the others simply didn't have it.
@@thecelticdruid.6681 They both were good in their own way I like how George portrays Clark better than Chris and superman looked different back then compared to later years George resembles the early 1940s - version if he had got the role when he was younger he really have looked like superman I've seen photos of George when he was younger and he look like him
At about 3:13 you can see the entire crew's reflection on the side of the car.
I loved watching Superman, Batman, so many to name while growing up, was born in 1960.
Just about everything was better on TV back then thru the 70's, then came the 80's, PHF!
I'm an artist, did a 4' x 3' oil canvas of Superman Over Manhattan for my curator artistpatboardman.weebly.com The galleries like the DC comic characters, Batman, Joker, Catwoman
Great Caesar's ghost !
It's sad how a part can consume you and leave you in ruins with no help in sight' RIP
1950s- When even the nerdy alter-ego of Superman was a manly debonair beast :D
Great scenes. 👍
7:58 love that smirk he gives that snarky broad
Somewhere in the 1950s two young brothers are watching a man fly through the air as he helps the desperate simultaneously taking down the bad guys. George Reeves was a real Superman to these children. Gone too early Reeves left his mark on generations of children.
Would love to return to tv of this era. Later, TVs Batman with Adam West.
They didn't add the episode where he really does expose his secret to everyone. They even watch him change his outfits. Luckily, he had a spritzer of memory loss spary handy to make them all forget
LOL at 3:14 you can see the whole crew reflected in the car. Love this stuff!
SpockBoy How in the world did you notice that ?
Good wax job!
Lol I never noticed that.
A 1953 Nash Rambler Convertible Landau. From 1951-1954, they used Nash cars. In 1955, they switched to Chrysler
George Reeves was the best Superman, so much like the comic books especially this particular episode,, love the look on George Reeves face when he knocked the Bell off the strongman Sledgehammer strength test. This particular show at the circus could have been in Adventures of Superman comic book.
No glasses on and they still don't recognize him. LOL
Hey, if you believe a man can fly, you can believe they wouldn’t recognize Superman. 😎
@@louisborselio8608 well, if they recognized him there would be no show. remember it's fiction folks
@@louisborselio8608 ok, suppose they expose him as superman. then what? no show thats what. its MAKE BELIEVE!!
Loved Superman with George Reves...
I watched this when I was 5 or 6 I am 68 now and it is shown on Heroes and Icons Network on Sunday mornings and I still love to watch it. As I got older and watched in reruns, then George Reeves became my first crush.
If I am not mistaken the Little Rascals also had a battle with that Pirate Captain too!!! Lol!!!!🤣🤣🤣
Martin Pasko created that fake explanation. It was established that several people looked like Superman, Jimmy & lois. Clark was one of them.
Back then,
All make believe,..
Thought their was a Superman...!
Science Fiction...
Great Adventures..
Unlike the Trash on today
2019
5:17 Every time this scene comes on, my heart leaps.
The best there was the best there was the best there ever is
Is was or ever will be
As many times I've seen this episode over 50 of my 59 years how can they not see superman in clark's bed.
Only on television wouldn't the others not wonder how Clark looked so much like Superman without his glasses.
I think George Reeves actually thought he was Superman. It was a fine show to grow up with now that I am 62 and just finding one of my fav shows!
The way Mr. Kent loses his disguise and gets away with it was part of the fun.
George was murdered straight up
@closeupman I mean Tony had connections to thob
ya didnt seem right he died
He didn't seem like the suicide type.
"Wonderful" compilation of the times when Clark's co-workers could have (or should have) thought he was Superman. I forgot how many times Lois saw Clark without his glasses on! :-))
I never saw these episodes.
Shouldn't they know Clark is Superman without his glasses????
I was a child when I saw in tv in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 but I can not remember these chapters. Anyhow I love Superman in any era.😀
Steven, the idea is so far fetched in their minds, until they just can't conceive it.
Hey Steven brant you look like Clancy brown (voice of lex Luthor from Superman the animated series 1996-2000) and could be his doppelgänger just like Steve Harvey is the doppelgänger of the late Richard Pryor (dead at 65,2005) cool and you're right the late George reeves and Noel Neil are the worlds best Lois lane and Clark Kent/Superman just like the recently late Margot Kidder and late Chris reeve and Brandon Routh and Kate bosworth who are still alive peace and love my friend you can comment me back whenever you get a chance asap thanks pal peace.
Still great to watch!💝
Love George Reeves
Watched George Reeves in all the tv episodes. Good plots.
Ok. Jimmy, Lois & Perry are in Clark's apartment. Clark is sick in bed with his GLASSES OFF! How is it that they can't recognize SUPEERMAN???
It's a television show. Not reallife
Lois is obviously the worst investigative reporter on Earth.
I grew up with this show, and loved the entire cast.
My kids hated it, Superman didn’t battle any aliens.
Jimmy saw Clark’s happenis and Lois wants to see Superman’s ain’t life unfair
Sometimes people do not want to see what is right in front of them.
I swear that sometimes people can be so oblivious to see that Clark & Superman are 1 & the same.
I am surprised when Superman arrives that Lois says "Hahaha. Clark, where did you get that Superman outfit?"
Just great writing.
..
@@deepseadirt1 Lois was beginning to suspect that Clark was Superman, but before she could complete the thought, he clumsily dropped her into the water and she forgot the whole thing.
What a great franchise, as a kid I was clued to the tube when this came on every afternoon
Ah...there's a Superman in so many men: outwardly clumsy, shy, unappreciated, confused but inwardly made of steel; not able to bonk the girl we love. Sadly we are missing the X-ray vision. LOL
Jimmy @ 5:06 was so scared for Clark’s life...thankfully Superman showed up when he did!
Christopher Reeve was my favorite version of Kal-el. George Reeves was my favorite version of Clark Kent. R.I.P. to both of these talented actors.
