    My job entails a lot of large software builds, integrating software written in multiple languages and complex docker container compositions.I used to always pivot around a static workstation I kept in my office, always using that as the main workhorse and re-syncing anything I did on my laptop(s) back to that. But not anymore. Since I moved up to an apple silicon laptop, that quickly became the main workhorse for everything. I soon only used the desktop machine for backing things up and eventually got rid of it for even that in favor of an actual remote backup service. Having this much portable power means I can do my builds anywhere. Anywhere I am is my remote office, even when connectivity is poor. That's a huge value add for me.

      It's arm based CPU, like a phone/tablet with all the storage/memory/GPU built in. It works well, really well, but comes at a price, money, and the issue with upgradeability. PCs have traditionally been cisc based x86 and configurable. Mac silicone computers are good if the apps are available. Windows is the most successful and widely used OS ever, doesn't mean it's the best, but for money, performance and availability it is ahead. Will MacOS ever beat it? Unfortunately the most used and professional 3d apps aren't available for MacOS: 3ds Max, Solidworks, Ansys, CATIA, Alias, Creo, Inventor, Siemens NX, Revit and D5. Many CUDA based renderers weren't converted for Metal. I think that for "heavy" compositing and video editing the Mac Book Pro is the best laptop available now but for 3d I would buy an Asus ProArt because you can plug an external gpu through the Thunderbolt port and leave the internal gpu working only for the display. I don't think you can leave a Mac Book Pro rendering for 24/7 days without melt fans, keyboard and ruin the battery. My Threadripper/Xeons/Nvidia cpus/gpus never reach 75°C while rendering 24/7. For video editing a Mac Book Pro M4 PRO is enough, the MAX version is not for 3d.

Some are still on M1 Pro, Max or Ultra systems and feel they do 100% of everything they need them to do. While this extra power is amazing and mind blowing there are also very few apps and tasks that really take full advantage of it.
    The important take away from all of this is that really there is no longer an advantage or disadvantage of either platform. Both are equally capable in the right hands. One does some tasks better while the other other does other tasks better. For the most part however they are both within spitting distance of each other.

Since most of the reviews only focus on the rendering aspects of these new chips, I am wondering if it would be possible to do a test of navigating inside of a heavy scene of any of the major 3D software's. Many of the comments from people are from the past few years, so it is possible that new updates might have fixed the performance, specially with softwares like Blender that gets updated often in contrast to other softwares releases. But it would be great if we can get tests that also showcases the overall experience of how snappy the viewport is with heavier scenes. Specially since these machines are quite expensive. Apple did this before when they worked with IBM and Motorola to make the PowerPC CPU, which was a.RISC chip. • @kurt9395
      @kurt9395 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kencollins1186 It was a bit more complicated than that. The problem was that each member of the AIM coalition had different priorities. Motorola's main focus was CPU's for cell phones which was big for them at the time. IBM's bread and butter was their server business with their PowerPC RS/6000 series. Apple was the only one using PowerPC for consumers, aside from game consoles, and given Mac marketshare, they couldn't drive the design changes that would benefit them. Intel, for their part, responded to the RISC threat with what was frankly a marketing gimmick, i.e. stretching instruction pipelines to enable higher clock speeds since most people back then associated clock speed with overall CPU performance. Annoyed that AIM's priorities were elsewhere, Steve Jobs reputedly told the CEO of Motorola, "I can't wait until we don't need you anymore." which sounds like classic Jobs.
      Fun fact: Apple was an early investor in ARM Holdings and used an ARM CPU in the ill-fated Apple Newton.

    So this comparison is kinda weird. Towards the end of the video, an M4 Max is 10-22% slower than that of a desktop equipped with an RTX 4070 in Blender. Am I the only one to notice that the 16core M4 Max is minimum $3999? And we all know that if you spec it with 64GB of RAM & 2TB SSD, you're looking at about $4900 after taxes. Building a PC with an RTX 4070 should cost around $1600, and that's what we're comparing?!? Also, did we totally forget the inherit value of x86 processors compared to ARM? (Such as, gaming, compatibility, servers, etc.)
    There are so many things that this video doesn't really address, and I find it upsetting that the audience watching aren't given the full scope of the picture, while on top of everything, having comparisons that favors the Apple chips.
    Disclaimer: I applaud Apple for their new chips. They're great for their use case scenarios,. They're power efficient. Their SoC is top-notch in the industry. However, when price is in consideration, they are slower than the competition, yet costs a lot more. They're slower than a 4080/4090, and Nvidia is planning on releasing the new 5080/5090 very soon. Why is this fact not considered in the comparison? I have no idea, but it just seems weird to me that we're comparing the recently released M4 Max chip against the RTX 4000 series GPU, which was released in Oct 2022. And not even the top of line RTX4090, which would be similar in price point.

    I can't stand Mac users sometimes. When it comes to specs, they’re quick to start trash-talking without really understanding the differences between macOS and PCs. But when I talk to PC users, they usually admit that Macs are good just with some 'buts.' Meanwhile, Mac users often trash PCs like it's some kind of competition. I have seen the opposite almost daily for well over a decade. Most Mac users I know pretty much keep to themselves. They tend to not be spec nerds that search for a fight. I'm not saying there may not be some out there but statistically if you look at the percentage of Windows users vs Mac users it kind of accurate to think they may be more negative Windows users bashing Macs. Just based on the sheer volume of users and how many of them are into the technical aspect of building computers and getting the most bang for the buck.
      A lot of Mac users may not even be able to tell you what the heck is in their machines. If you ask them they just say something like the 2019 one or whatever.
      What I have noticed for over a decade is just the fact that people are na coffee shop with a Mac seems to anger some PC users. Just seeing that Apple logo seems to trigger anger for whatever reason. I think they feel the users are being arrogant and elitists just by being there. It's a lot of very strange negativity.
      Hey I use both and it's all pointless toxic consumerism at the end of the day. People should care more about their own lives and future and not what gadgets and tools people use. To each their own.
