  • Part 2 of the Lawn Boy reassembly, installing carb, adjusting points, adjusting air gap between coil and flywheel, installing spark advance, checking for spark. Waiting on parts will do a finishup and startup video when the parts arrive.

Nothing will ever be like a D400, the sound the smell of cooking grass on the muffler and 2 stroke oil burning man what a machine.

Yeah I still mow with the lawn boys, I even sneak a little bean oil in the fuel to give mowing more of an experiance.

Talk about being Lawn Boy nuts......I must be OCD !! I refuse to give up on my Lawn Boy #5238 model ( same engine ) That tip at 36:29 about the casket needing a small hole or it won't work was a life saver ! thanks a lot ........Tim ( air bleed hole )

Hello from New Zealand! I've just started adding a few of these to my small vintage collection, and still learning all their little foibles. They're somewhat different to the other mowers I work on.
To that end, I wanted to sincerely thank you for this series of videos. There isn't much on here regarding the Lawn Boy, or "Iron Horse" as we call them. So this was a huge help, particularly with respect to the ignition, governor and recoil assemblies. I could not for the life of me work out how to get tension on the spring! Now I'm all sorted! I find watching someone do it on video makes it a lot easier to grasp than trying to decipher grainy old diagrams and instructions. Thanks again mate!

Thank you for the kind words, yes I also noticed that there wasn't much on TH-cam about lawn boys. Decided to do something about that, hence the series here. I have more to come for the lawn boys. I am enjoying doing them, it's nice to be able to help folks out. I am by no means a professional. I learn from my viewers as well. Hey...thanks for watchin from down under, mate.

@@montana2strokeracer Sounds great, I'm sure there will be many besides me who will look forward to that. They're a brilliant wee motor. Sadly they don't build anything with this quality in today's throwaway world. Every time I see one that's reasonably priced, I can't help but snap it up. Cheers again bud! 👍🍻

Love this series! I mow all the time with my 1975 Lawn Boy 5024 Bricktop with the same D433 engine, or my 1973 Lawn Boy 7262 with a D600 engine. I’m gonna keep both of your videos saved for future reference if ever needed. Love my little green machines! Yeah, we Lawn Boy nuts are a special breed!

Hey thanks for the kind words and watching, there is more to come on the D-400 rebuild, still waiting for parts, and getting ready to release a video about machining a new throttle shaft for the carb. Yeah...mix up the gas and mow. We are indeed nuts.

There would have been a non critical coil wire retainer that is under one of the armature plate bolts.

I wish I could go back in time to that day at the engineer meeting on this engine design. "Ok, carb and reed plates look good, Johnson. Peterson, how are we coming along with that governor assembly?" ......crickets.
Hope you do more of these. Thanks for posting them.

Your right not too many Lawn boy engine rebuilds on TH-cam. Love your series. You should put some lite grease between the governor collar the washer and the plastic spacer. Also the coil ground eyelet should go on top of the coil. Keep the series going.👍

Wow, think you must be a real lawn boy pro. Thanks for the tips. I on the other hand just know enough to get in trouble. Motorcycles more my forte. I did notice the difference in the cylinders, the liner on the 600 goes farther toward the head. I think someone did the ole switch a roo on me when I bought that cylinder, it came in a box with the right part number, but looks like its not. I looked it over pretty good while I was deciding about trying to sleeve my worn out one.The sleeve portion is about 3/16 longer in the NOS one, if I remember correctly. The piston and rings seem to be operating in it ok, so I think I will throw caution to the wind and give it a try. Maybe the newer oil we have today will keep me out of trouble. Hey thanks again for the pointers. Thanks for watchin.
