@@Cam.co17776 the family didn’t. And sadly I know for a fact that a lot of college age kids couldn’t tell you any of that information. As a matter of fact, at a previous job I held last year, I worked with a lot of these people. I asked them basic questions: “Who fought in the Revolutionary War? “Who won the Revolutionary War?” “What war took place in 1812?” and since we live in Texas “Who won at the Battle of the Alamo?” Most of these questions and others like them were answered with “I don’t know.” ….
@@officerrebar3839 I’m Filipino and I appreciate the facts. The Philippines and the U.S. has a long history since the Spanish-American war and I am interested in learning the history of my country and yours more.
As an American myself, I find it interesting when people from different countries learn about our history and their reactions to it.

I've been to the famous bridge in Lexington where the "shot heard around the world" took place. There is a memorial to the British soldiers who died there, which I found very moving.
I live not to far away from Lexington and went there to!
The British response was literally “The Empire Strikes Back!”

As an American, I even laughed at the gold everywhere statement.

Amusingly enough, the gold everywhere helped to create modern economic theory and the idea of inflation. Spain stole a couple tons of gold and silver, but not much in the way of grain. So they had lots of money, but the same amount of bread, and bread prices went up accordingly.

The natives on the island where Columbus first landed had gold on them that they were trading for their brass hawks’ bells and other things carried by the sailors. When the "island chieftain" as he called him in his journal, saw how excited the gold made them he told him that it could be found in abundance nearby and gave him an impressive mask inset with large pieces of gold.
I gotta return the respect and learn some NZ history.

John Adams' brilliant wife basically said that people in the future would never really understand how hard they worked and suffered to pull this Revolution off. Nadine you were right, nothing worth fighting for comes easy.
This is why I love the American Revolution more than most other engagements in history. The sheer effort, grit, luck and skill of everyone involved led to victory over a more experienced military nation. It's David vs. Goliath.
We got lucky. England and France's relationship was strained from the beginning. The French saw this as a way to make the British fight on at least two fronts. Combine this with the increasing distaste for the war among the English people, and we gained our independence. It was a very close run thing.
Its because of that strained relationship that we had war...it wasn't just the lack of representation and taxes...tax structure wasn't like today...those taxes effected mainly the well off...but the proclamation line of 1765 which was the result of the French and Indian war effected those seeking to settle to the west of the Appalachian Mountains and seeking to farm land of their own...the French and Indian war is what put England and France both in debt to start with...

the Original colonies were 13 in number, by the time of the war of 1812 between the US and the UK there were 15 states, the Star Spangled Banner was written at that time and there were 15 stars and 15 stripes on the flag, they soon realized that if they added a stripe every time the added a new state the flag would soon look like a scroll rather than a flag, so it was decided to only have the original 13 stripes, and just add a star when a new state was added. 😊
The war of 1812, first major US loss, they got their asses handed to them and their White House was burnt to the ground. Check out how they went attacking the Canadians, it's hilarious

Fun video. Good wishes from just outside Boston. Fun fact, John Adams the 2nd President of the U.S. was the lawyer defending the British troops of the Boston Massacre. And he was a member of the Sons of Liberty but he really believed everyone should have a fair trial.
The amazing part is that most of these men were in their 20s and 30s at this time. We have their portraits showing them as distinguished older men, but at the time of these events they were much younger. I have an ancestor that was recognized by Washington for his heroism at the battle of White Plains NY.
The entire revolution was based on the simple matter that the Americans - or colonists as they were known at that time - were requesting representation in the parliament that was levying taxes on them and they were denied. Hence the phrase “No Taxation Without Representation” being so prominent in the American lexicon. I enjoy your family’s videos and am looking forward to part 2. And to my fellow Americans, have a happy and safe 4th of July tomorrow.

Bc if they got representation they still would pretty get 0 say bc their representation woukd still be extremely small. No, it was not about “no taxation without representation,” that’s the propaganda they teach kids in government schools. The revolution was about liberty from tyranny, everything fought for in the Bill of Rights. Freedom from kings.

13 states at the revolution War in 1776. The number of states at time of star spangled banner in war of 1812 was 15 states.

Yes. You are correct 13 stripes thirteen colonies. But the number of states at the time of 1812 was actually 15. Ohio and Louisiana were admitted to the union prior to the war of 1812 at the time of the star spangled banner
There were 18 states during the War of 1812. Vermont was admitted in 1791, Kentucky in 1792, Tennessee in 1796, Ohio in 1803, and Louisiana just a few months before the War started in 1812. I lived in Kentucky when I was a kid, and it bugged me a little that KY didn't get to be the first state after the original 13. I got over it.
“No taxation without representation!” was one of the statements made by colonists during that time which eventually lead to the idea of Independence.

I teach eighth grade in Arizona and I can confirm that Arizona's students are taught the foundations of our government. Whether it's enforced and reiterated at home is another story. Education is a team effort, and parenting is important.

My 5th Great Grandfather, Hugh Pierce, fought in our Revolution as part of the South Carolina Volunteer Militia.
I love your family, I've seen this video at least 3 times on my own but this was the first time I genuinely laughed at all the quips. You guys have such positive energy, I hope to have a family like yours one day ❤️😊
The colonist also used guerrilla fighting tactics they learned from the Indigenous tribes. Which the British thought was bad form. Wars were fought by soldiers standing in rows not by using the landscape. Hard to get a clear shot when they are behind trees and in the deep thicket.
Have you ever heard "The Battle of New Orleans" by Johnny Horton?? Guerrilla tactics that'll have you laughing.

It IS over-simplified...but it does give a lot of good general information.
In my hometown, houses have stars on them indicating the amount of minutemen who lived there
I drive right through the Concord, Massachusetts area every day on my way to work, and seeing all of the historical sights that were so integral to the nation’s founding never fails to give me goosebumps!
A couple of interesting points that got left out of this video: first of all, I read an article somewhere that said many historians agree that if the Continental Army had won the battle at Quebec, the Canadian colonists would have joined the rebellion, and there would be one big country in North America, rather than two. Secondly, in the original draft of the Constitution, Jefferson did actually include points that would have outlawed slavery. However, because it needed to be unanimously agreed upon, and the southern states wouldn't vote for it if it abolished slavery, those parts were removed in the final version.
Thomas Jefferson did manage to get an amendment added to the Virginia constitution that outlawed the bringing of new slaves into Virginia, considering the times I am still amazed he managed.
Also Georgia was settled to be anti-slavery because of the deep Christian beliefs of Gen. George Oglethorpe. Georgia remained that way for the 10 years Oglethorpe was there.
That's one prob I see with this simple version. Missing important facts

Living in suburban NY we are steeped in revolutionary history. From the battle of Stony Point to a restaurant dating back to the time of Washington where he actually ate. With bits about Benedict Arnold, Anthony Wayne etc.
When construction or road work is done people use metal detectors. On occasion where British troops were known to march or camp people find coins from that era.
That's so cool!
I have always wanted to visit NY, and that would be amazing to find!
im one of those metal detecting guys. i have found 5 coins, a few musket balls, a continental army shoe buckle frame and a few pewter regiment buttons. my favorite find is a Mass. 6th regiment officer button. from what i read it was led by marquis de lafayette, washingtons right hand man. holding that history in my hand is kind of mind blowing
Same here. My family has been in the Morristown NJ area since before the Revolution. My ancestor and all of his brothers who were old enough served.

Hello New Zealand family. It was enjoyable watching your reactions to the history of our great nation. You are great parents for educating your children on history outside of your native land. I was on the journey as well and although I knew in general a lot of the history, I enjoyed watching your reactions. I am a Korean- American who emigrated to the U.S. 47 years ago when I was a child at the age of 6. I am a proud naturalized citizen of America and appreciate the rich history of how America was founded. That was enjoyable to watch especially how it was humorously told with much laughter. Looking forward to seeing part 2!

After watching your family watch some of the history of USA it made me think of schoolhouse rock. Back in the 80s they used to play short videos in-between Saturday morning cartoons here to teach kids different subjects and America was one of them. Besides America, they did grammer, math, science. You should check them out.

After watching you guys have a root beer float, I got some vanilla frozen yogurt and diet orange soda (I'm diabetic so I have to choose lower sugar items and already had the diet orange) and made an orange float - it tastes like a vanilla and orange ice cream we call a Creamsicle. The cool float is so refreshing. Thanks for bringing back a memory. Now I'm ruined for the rest of the summer.

Those who are being homeschooled sure are. I know because my sis homeschools 3 and they are learning about true American history not that crap government/public schools teach now. And with me being their aunt, they are learning how to be a true American Patriot.🇺🇸 What the schools won't teach, it is up to us older generations to teach them. Or they will never learn.

I grew up in Lexington, MA. Ever April 15th they still hold reenactments of the battle at Lexington. The a big fun parade. Great memories.
Thomas Jefferson wrote anti slavery parts to the declaration but they were taken out so that all the colonies would sign. He also freed his slaves upon his death.
Jennifer: Jefferson freed only a few of his slaves in his will. Maybe a total of five and a couple before he died. About 200 slaves were sold from his estate. Some of those gained freedom other ways, I think. However, he did originally write a condemnation of slavery in the Declaration that was removed. He asserted it was an evil foisted by Great Britain on the colonies. The thing, for me, that is worth remembering is that although we can criticize Jefferson for his actions, it is difficult to do so without using language and ideas that he partially invented or was first to implement meaningfully, such as "equality." Glad you are thinking about these things. Please consider my remark an amplification of yours rather than a correction. Cheers.
@@dalecouch1995 I'll have to go back and verify, but I believe there were Virginia state laws that only allowed for a certain number to be freed in accordance to a last will and testament. The rest had to either be sold off as estate or passed to next of kin.
@@hk_802 I looked and it seemed during his lifetime he could have by law freed any slave he held between the ages of 18 (if a woman) and 21 (if a man) and 45. The fact that he only freed 5 slaves and passed over 200 hundred on in his will as objects of wealth means he either owned 200 people that were all younger than 18/21 or over 45 and kept selling the younger off before they reached 18 or 21 as to avoid having to make the decision to free them. Or only owned slaves older than 45 over the course of his life. Which... seems unlikely.
Jefferson said he thought slavery was evil but made an exception for himself because he and his family were economically or habitually reliant on slave labor. Not unlike a person who says cheating is a sin and yet when they do it they had "understandable" emotional reasons for it. Except for instead of cheating it is keeping human beings in forced bondage, forcing them to work for free, with no control over their own fate and giving them to your children to own when you die.
So he didn't even free his slaves until he died? Disgraceful.
Oversimplified is a great channel for learning history. If you want to learn about more major events, I recommend his videos on the Civil War, both World Wars, the Russian Revolution, the Cold War, and his most recent video on the Napoleonic Wars. The mini wars are fun too, and as New Zealanders you may be interested in the Emu Wars of Australia.

Baltimore born and bred myself-the colonies were Britain's Vietnam-long supply lines, too much territory to cover, too expensive to fight, never knowing which people were on your side and which were only pretending to be, hit-and-run tactics against superior numbers, and another country helping the rebels. The parallels are many.
The colonies had France and Spain on their side but yeah it was pretty impressive...
That the Americans could lie so hard in their declaration of independence.
Britain wasn't the superpower of the day. The british in the 1700s had little to no global influence, and they didn't have the best army, certainly not a bad one, but with the sheer numbers of colonists and the power of France and Spain bearing down on them there wasn't much they could do. Britain was yet to reach empire status and didn't hold territory in india yet, so yeah

Wow…this family is amazing! They had me laughing and I’ve known this history since I was a kid growing up in Baltimore, Md in 1964!
I am an American - when I went to Boston I stopped at Boston Harbor and took some tea that I brought along and sprinkled it into the water there! BTW, if you ever go to Boston, Concorde is not that far away so you can see all the original Revolutionary War sites and you can go to Walden Pond (go early in the day because it gets busy) and actually swim in the pond where Thoreau wrote his famous book. It's a great experience, and if you go in late August or in September the water is nice and warm too! You just leave your things on the shore and jump in!

One of the all-time best Washington moments. Washington is a very underrated politician (his Farewell Address with its warning against European entanglements is another such example of his political instincts).
That was a theatrical and unbelievably important moment in American history. Had that meeting gone in a different direction, this country may have fallen apart before it ever had a chance to grow.
There are a few thing to understand about the Boston tea party. The tea in Boston harbor was not just some boxes of loose tea but processed tea that is compressed into small bricks. The bricks are shaved into hot water to make tea. The bricks make for much more efficient transportation of the tea. The boxes on the ship and subsequently destroyed when thrown overboard constituted 46 tons equating to 18.5 million cups of tea. Literally years of tea tossed overboard.

The awkward moment? Abraham Lincoln was self educated. He didn't let a lack of knowledge stop him from doing great things. Maybe it is more self realization that one needs to spend time on learning ones history. Try looking at Hillsdale College for American history. They are a Patriotic college and offer free classes. Also, Christian Books have American history books just to read. Check both sites out. What could it hurt?
@@jessiceeoriginal You misunderstood my statement. I didn’t say myself, I said Americans in general. I myself am a huge history nerd and cant get enough of it. There are a lot of American individuals who couldn’t even tell you what year the Declaration of Independence was signed and frankly dont care which is a shame. I respect this family for looking into what our own countrymen wont spend the time researching.

Fun fact about Minnesota - the temperature ranges wildly here. The highest temp ever recorded in the state was 115F (46C) in 1917, and the lowest temp ever recorded in the state was -60F (-51C) in 1996.
Great history lesson! I am a descendant of 12 documented patriots of the Revolution and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
This should be how history is taught in school.
William Dawes and Samuel Prescott were 2 of the other riders with Paul Revere. Of the 3 Prescott was the only one that completed the midnight ride, Dawes lost his horse and Revere was caught, questioned and then released.

BTW I'm thrilled to see someone from another country who is fascinated by our history and culture as much as you guys. It's very refreshing. Oversimplified is like the perfect way to teach history. Short, entertaining, and packed with the most important bits of info. Only would need a tiny handful of changes to be 100% kid friendly.
Thank you so much for your interest in our country. We've been so blessed in America and are genuinally interested in the freedoms of others. The wars fought by the US are typically described to be for oil, power, & land (which we already have) but in fact are to lend a hand to those thirsting for freedom. Civil War, WW1, WW2 , Korea, Vietnam, Iraq.... If you really stop and think about it what did the US benefit from any of them? They were fought to bring freedom to those whose backs were against the wall and could not do it for themselves. We see ourselves as the big brother by God's Providence and we take this role extremely serious. To the point of dying. It hurts to see some cheapen the death of all our fallen soldiers by saying it's all about oil. We have more oil than we'd ever use already (Texas, Alaska, Gulf of Mexico). Yeah we're loud, brash, and annoying but at the end of the day "Greater love hath no man than this. To give his life for a friend". You cannot begin to understand the mindset of Americans without starting with its Christian roots and their relationship with freedom. i.e. The Puritans.
Anyway, love the channel. My wife and I have been inspired to watch some NZ vids with our kids.

I wouldn't include the Iraq and Vietnam wars though. Sure taking down Al Queda was a good reason but the moment Bin Laden was dead and the group scattered we should have been out of there. They continued the war because of supposed nuclear weapons that weren't even there. Plus many Americans also protested the Vietnam War because they knew it was wrong.
I think right now US needs to become the savior of his own continent people specially in some countries in the Americas that doesn't have the best luck because of the corruptions, drug cartels, lack of industrialization and development and make best relations with their continental allies as Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile, and all of the sovereign nations of the west because all of the continental Americas from Alaska to Patagonia in Argentina needs to become developed countries before Asians control every aspect in economic and power terms. China right now has so much power in his hands and the are gaining allies in Asia and the eastern world and the future in 30 years would be another so the western nations including Europe, Latin America, The US and Canada need to become one to stabilize the power concentration in one side.
After part 2, it would be fun to see you react to the Civil War by Oversimplified.
