7:09 This is not exactly true from what I understand. The Leica 40mm is actually made in Germany and it was specifically made for the Leica CL, the only Leica M with 40mm frame lines ever. Minolta did not make the Leica branded lenses as far as I know. You should be able to tell from the "made in Germany" label on the Leica lenses. The Minolta branded lenses were made by Minolta, they are made in Japan. These were not made for the CL, but the later CLE which Minolta launched on its own when Leica abandoned the CL as it feared it would cannibalize M5 sales. The 40mm Rokkor is excellent. I would guess that it has better lens coatings than the older 40mm Summicron.
Hi Mike, Great video! Thanks for sharing. In the 70’s I used a Minolta CLE and I loved it. I now have found in Japan a new old stock 40mm Minolta for CLE ( multi coated vs the Leica version) It is an absolute gem with only 90 degrees focusing. Perfect with the M11. I have many 35’s ( cron non asph, cron asph, lux asph , ) but this little one gave me amazing photos! Paired with an M, almost invisible! Peace
I have a Leica one as well as the Minolta Rokkor version, and they are amazing little lenses. The Rokkor is a little more contrasty with better coatings, but they are about the same sharpness. The Leica is a bit nicer to use, but honestly, both are brilliant.
The 40 Summi is one of my favorites. Been rockin’ one with a CLE for 3 decades. I love it so much that I have 3. From my research it’s a Wetzlar design. While the Minolta version is the same formula, I much prefer the coatings on Summicron than the Rokkor. Especially with B&W. Some of my most printed images come from this lens. Regards
I selected the Cron over the Rokkor to go with the CL and CLE I picked up for the same reasons. I was thinking the Rokkor would be a little more sanitized look-wise.
The 40mm Summicron-C is a Leica made in Germany by Leitz. The Minolta 40mm is a great lens too, manufactured in Japan with different coatings. They are different lenses. It’s not like the Hassleblad XPan/Fujifilm TX-1 which were exactly the same. Think of the Minolta as the Summicron-C’s Japanese cousin.
It'll seem a bit of a weird person to pass it onto, but i reckon James Popsys, he loves a 40mm lens, and while he doesnt have a leica atm, he has had one/borrowed one on occasion
Nice video and your photos look great. I love this lens also -- I have a Minolta branded version that I got with a Minolta CLE -- but primarily use it on my M9 and my Lumix. Small size can't be beat. Reminds me a lot of the earlier 35mm Summicron v. 4, which is also super compact and produces great results.
My favorite lens is the Voigtlander 40mm f/2 that I use on my Leica FM2. I much prefer 40mm to 35mm, even though I think the optics in my Voigtlander 35mm f/2 are a slightly better.
This a great little lens Mike. My copy has the original Leica rubber lens shade which helps to control flare. I was recently in the South of France and used this as the only lens on my M2 and I loved it. It is equally effective on my M9 and M10 cameras.
Legendary lens. Maybe best bang for the buck on any system period? I love that these options exist. There's a few of them. Like the 90/4, for instance. It unlocks robust kit for just a few hundred dollars. After just buying Leica bodies, that can be super helpful!
Interesting point it is closer to 35 than a 50. I love my 35 Cron IV for the same reason, so small, and light. just mentally feels effortless. It performs well with a good bokeh. It gets the most use of all my M lenses.
That duck shot is so freakin good 🤘🏽 I picked up this lens 2 months ago but should have it serviced as my focus throw is a little stiff, otherwise a great lens.
Hi Mike, 40mm is one of my favourite focal lengths for street. Does the M11-P have a gridline matching 40mm? I am using a Voigtlander Bessa R3A which has a 40mm gridline, together with the Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f1.4.
Really nice images. 40mm is my favourite focal length for street photography. Those old Leica lenses are amazing. I have a 1970 Summicron 50/f2 (v3) and an Elmar 90/f4 from the 50s. Bargain prices and lovely results, so much depth and character to vintage Leica glass -
I totaly agree with every thing said. I own one myself and love it - ultra small and light, but still very operatable, sharp and contrasty but still has a lot of caracter in my oppinion. I prefer it to my 35mm cron ASPH
Excellent shots. This was the first Leica lens I had ever owned and I miss it a lot. I took some awesome street photos with it in Memphis years ago. I think I’ll pick it up again and this time not sell it.
The only real differences between the Minolta M-Rokkor 40mm and the Summicron-C 40mm are the filter thread sizes and the price. The Leica gets a not-insignificant bump in price.
When I researched this before at least the v1 of the minolta is just a leica with minolta slapped on it . V2 was the minolta version with different coating.
Nice shots! The 40mm Cron was my entry into the Leica world along with a CL and CLE. It’s such a great lens with its own distinctive look. Still have it paired to a CLE for those days I want something smaller than an M.
I think that the best 40mm that I have is the one on my Olympus RD, the superb F-Zuiko 40mm F1.7 . These guys were designed for the Leica/Minolta CL film cameras as the Ms do not have a frame line for 40mm, you just have to select the 35mm and work inside that frame. The filter sizes are very strange and filters very hard to come by and expensive. The Leica version is more rare than minolta because Leica just pulled the plug on this lens without notice in 1976 after just three years of production.
Great video. I love older lenses. I have my new lenses and camera bodies for work and assignments but then love to experiment with different vintage lenses for character and rendering on my XE4 aka budget Leica. ❤
Interesting video Very nice lens and interesting project to let the lens travel the world and collect images shot with it. Just a tip, with older lenses (vintage) set your camera (in your cases) to 18 or 36 MP. They are not performing optimal on high MP sensors M10 - 24 would be the better camera for it. Never the less, some amazing shots you took with it. And again thanks for sharing them !
How do you find shooting your M11-P with liveview on? I love my M11 to death and use liveview frequently, but there's a perceptible lag for me with LV that makes capturing the decisive moment difficult. No such issue with LV off.
Mike, I would love to have a go with this lens before you pass it along to someone in another country. I am based in London so it would be easy to meet up and pass it along, Michael
Great idea for a project passing the lens around. Be careful getting into vintage lenses, it's a slippery slope!😂 I love how they all render slightly differently and the different bokeh you get from them. So much nicer than modern glass.
I'd love to hear from someone who knows lens design why pancake lenses are often (usually) 40mm or vice versa. Anyone? I'm just curious as to the design elements. Takes fewer pieces of glass to do a good job at that focal length based on RI?
If I had to venture a guess, 40mm is the closest to real life. The lens elements are effectively windows that don't need to bend light as other focal lengths.
Hey, Mike. Love the video. It coincides with my own views of the lens. I have one for sale that's recently been CLAd and looks like new. You mentioned you're looking for one, so I sent you an email to give you details. Please check, in case it went to spam.
Yeah! I'm really digging the images you're pulling out of that little lens. Thanks so much for being a part of the project!
My pleasure man! I’m loving it haha

Try out the Summarit 40mm f2.4 in the Minilux, or even better look for a new housing and transfer its lens.

Great lens for travelling, currently have it on my bessa as it’s got 40mm framelines originally got it with my CL

I’m here to learn about the lens but got a lot of tips and tricks from you for street photography! Liked and subscribed!
I like a lot the comments of the photos you took. Very instructive. Thanks.
I have it for 6 years now i really love this lens. The bokeh is sick !! Love it

Check out the Voigtlander 40mm Heliar. Modern lens and it is even smaller!

Voigtlander 40mm in M mount is easy to find and great.

Love the three 🦆🦆🦆
And what a lovely gentleman on the food stall 👍
Yeah that falafel was delicious
1:17 - Wowww thats a great one
The guy giving the free falafels is so nice tho!
I agree with you about 40 is closer to 35 in composition than 50mm. And I’m kinda prefer then 35 now.
Great video. I love older lenses. I have my new lenses and camera bodies for work and assignments but then love to experiment with different vintage lenses for character and rendering on my XE4 aka budget Leica. ❤
check out the 28mm f5.6 summaron, it's the most compact Leica lens I know of (produced by Leica)
Interesting video

I have the 28 Elmarit and would love a 40 with the same dimensions.
do you usually use the rear screen or the rangefinder patch?
Bagged one for £500. Paired it with my M9-P. Enjoyed using it.
Nice video and super results !I’d love to get this lens and use it on both film & digital M bodies!
the music makes it like you're on a mission. lol

Check out the Nikon 45mm GN lens (F mount). .
Great idea for a project passing the lens around.
Be careful getting into vintage lenses, it's a slippery slope!😂 I love how they all render slightly differently and the different bokeh you get from them. So much nicer than modern glass.
The image at 1:17 is 🔥
Might be a silly question but, does this lens bring up frame lines or do you have to estimate? I’m referring to using the OVF
Estimate .
It brings up the 50mm frame lines or you can mod it to bring up the 35mm ones.
@@Ben-cx8de thanks! If you have used this, which frame lines are you using/ prefer?
What's the difference between a chickpea and lentil?
I wouldn't let a lentil on my face... And Parsons is allergic to one of them!
I'd love to hear from someone who knows lens design why pancake lenses are often (usually) 40mm or vice versa. Anyone? I'm just curious as to the design elements. Takes fewer pieces of glass to do a good job at that focal length based on RI?

If I had to choose one lens it would be a 40mm. Awesome shots as usual
I would usually disagree... but after this video I'm thinking otherwise haha
What makes you think they are rare? I have a pair and see them for sale constantly.
Oh damn it please don't make Minolta lenses expensive.
when are you getting your central incisor thooth done ?
:D
😂😂😂 i do need to do that
@@MikeChudley yeah invest in yourself first then the leicas 😄cheers mate

Good thing you didn't get his face in the photo!
If only James Popsys still had his Leica....
You never put your eye in the Rangefinder. Strange.
The photos would work better without captions saying why they work and that they’re “not bad.” Best leave those opinions to the viewer.
Maybe you shouldn't post a picture of an actual human and have the caption be "underwhelming subject".
Pass the lens on to Matt Day
I think me Mike ;)
In my opinion, short pants should be banned for photographers ! 😝
