I think he did this because he heard the president had been shot. If Oswald had been shooting at JFK or was knowingly part of a conspiracy to shoot JFK, hearing that JFK had been shot would not have been news. It would have been expected. If he had been totally uninvolved and had not taken a package to work at someone's request or the like then there would no reason for him to react by going home and getting his pistol. With maybe a half mile walk, one would make a reasonable substitute for the other in a pinch. Oswald took a transfer slip when he got off which he could have used to get on the Beckley bus and home. If you look at where LHO got off the bus after leaving work, it’s near his previous boarding house. He started walking down that sidewalk, street by street, zig zag. He met Tippit about halfway to his likely destination. And that destination? Well, if you keep going that direction you end up right smack dab at Jack Ruby’s apartment. Coincidence? No. LHO had to change course because he didn’t want to drag the police to his door so he went to his designated meeting location to meet with his handler. But the theater owner on that day decided to call the police instead, for no valid reason.
