This man went from this to a home shop/studio AMAZING!
Lol this feels like 8,000 years ago!!
Hi,
thanks for showing us what the clock spring looks like inside, i always thought it had brushes in it that are used in electric motors.
No prob! Getting clock springs covered is hit or miss. I have seen some covered and some not. I think that many warranty companies consider it an airbag part(which is super lame).
Keep me posted on what happens.
Thank you so much, man! My VW dealer told me that this most likely wasn't covered under my extended warranty because it's an air bag component, but it looks to be there to support more than just the air bag. Thanks for the info! I'm going to go dig out the warranty paperwork and go back to bat with them and try to get this replaced.
Very informative video! I traced the inop horn problem on my 95 Toyota Camry to the location of the clockspring. I didn't know it was called a clockspring until about a half hour ago, or how it was made on the inside. But the horn relay control wire has voltage from the horn relay to the multi pin connector (under the steering collumn shroud) that goes to the clockspring, and there is no voltage at the horn pad contact wire in the steering wheel (under the air bag). The horn relay control wire and the horn pad contact wire should be electrically continuous (no electrical break). So the electrical break must be in the clockspring. Thanks!
Holy hell, you've come a long way
Just got my transmission rebuilt...next issue...sir ...air bag light on and horn doesn't work...kid you not ...first I ever heard about a clock spring...great channel.....won't have to worry about airbags if we ever get the 71 olds cutlass restored...ty
I went back today, but no dice. Fidelity said it wasn't covered with their Gold Plus warranty since this specific part isn't listed as one that is covered. Bummer. I guess I'll save my pennies up and replace it when I can and live without the horn and with the air bag light for a while. Thanks again for the great explanation of what the clockspring is and does!
Thanks for this descriptive video. I had to pull apart my steering column to replace the control unit for the levers. The warning on the clock spring made me be fearful of breaking it, not knowing what it did. But with your video, I now know, and feel a lot more comfortable handling it.
Just as a precaution, I had taped the spring in position so it didn't rotate while I had it off. It looks like that was a good idea to do.
nice video also realize if you don't hold the wheel properly when installing... you may create an open in the air bag circuit ... no big deal the most likely thing that will happen is illuminate on the dash board. ( and you will have to re-fix it)
That dog is an art fan
@biggurs Horn in stuck, that is awful. I have never seen a clock spring do that. I have seen the contacts inside the steering wheel cause that to happen. It is very possible, since the clock spring moves, it can be the most likely part to fail. There is more to that circuit than just the clock spring. VWs use a relay and I guess BMW does too.
You seem like a cool dude that will reply to comments. I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota SXT and my tall cousin got in the passenger side and hit his knees on the glove compartment and the airbag is just above that. I started my truck and my airbag light came on and won't go off. In this video you are talking about the driver's airbag but I wonder about the passenger's airbag.
I googled Clock Spring, wasn't sure what it was in your latest 'State of the shop' video... thought it was a different person at first til I heard your voice haha.
This video showed up about 3rd on my google search for 'clock spring'.
Thanks for the comment. He may have bumped the connection loose on the airbag with his knees. The other thing to consider, it may be an issue with the seat belt connection.
I would take it in and have the fault checked. It could be something as simple as a loose connection..
I wouldn't get rid of the car just for that. If there are tons of other issues then maybe. Did they give you a quote on replacing it?
thanks!
6 months later and i still havent got round to fixing it!
You must be right., I said it was the clock spring because thats what i assumed it would be but im not very knowledgable in these things!
Someone on a forum im a member at said it there was a ribbon with 4 contacts which could be the problem.
My horn goes off as soon as i put the fuse in, possible short somewhere.
This other member said the bold holding the ribbon was shorting.
i'll have a go next week
Don't shotgun a clock spring. You need to get the code for what is going on. Ask the dealer if they will just give you the code and NOT diagnose the issue. They should not charge you for that. If they do, it should not be more than $30 or so.
Is there another dealer, or an indy shop near you? Pulling a code seriously takes 5 minutes.
There are a few things that are common on your Passat. Clock springs(usually the horn stops working too) and the wiring under the seats. Was the recall done?
Charles you look staggeringly like Geddy Lee in this video
car horn went out after going through a heavy rain storm...took it to the shop and they replaced the horn...worked til the day after and went out again burning the aftermarket horn...now shop says it is the clock spring and the air bag light stays on...help please
@Danny,
That sounds more like the turn signal stalk. Does the stalk pop back to the normal position after you turn?
The stalk on my passat went out. The turn signal relay would click randomly.
I have a 2001 National Dolphin RV and the cruise control works intermittently. It's on a Ford chassis called F53. Do you think it can be the clockspring?
I was removing my ignition lock yesterday -4C getting dark not at home because key wouldn't turn removed steering wheel and the clock spring unraveled like a gag tube of peanut brittle. It looks like that one inside but the ribbons are all different lengths. I had to loop the longer ones back on themselves for it to work so I could get home. Like they have to change direction midway They wouldn't just wind up like all the other ones I see. Is that how it works or am I in for electrical problems? Thanks for the video.
Is that a Ralph Stedman? Great vid! Thanks!
I replaced the steering control box in 2010 e-350 ford van, afterwards airbag light came on and stayed on. The horn and cruise control doesn't work. Do you have any idea why or how this happened and how to fix it?
This normally happens if the battery is not disconnected before disconnecting the wiring for the srs system.
Hi Humble Mechanic, thank you for the channel. One question, I have a 2002 F150 and want to add cruise control. How do I find out if this is a feature that can be enabled by adding a C.C. clock spring?
im looking to upgrade a 06 f350 to have cruise control. besides replacing the steering wheel with one that has buttons am I going to have to find a new one of these as well or is that standard
Love your videos on the clock spring thanks for the info I just subscribed.👍
I have a dodge ram 1500 and the steering sounds like some metal caught in there. Is this related to the airbag? and is it that important to change it?
So I take it technician database went down a while ago?
I have a 2002 Toyota Sienna LE, the horn is giving me problems it blows when it feels like it which is not most of the time. I was told I needed the clock spring but everything else is working on the steering. Is it possible the horn part of the clock spring just failed? Thank you.
I have a volvo 460 ( 464 ) 1996. The horn worked 5 times and then got silence. I saw only black ( ground wires ) inside the steering ), I suppose the relay and fuse are ok. I have cleaned a copper ring inside the steering, but dont know if that is the connection. I think there should be a copper or metall thing in the middle of the steering, but there is none, and I yet got some sound, so that has probably some function to the airbag, but not sure. So Im now thinking to shift a horn to a one that I know works for sure, and to pull a new cable under the relay if the ones are not working so well, 3. It is a problem in the steering? I cant find any videos about volvo 460 Steering here on youtube, when searching....
I have a 2014 Infiniti Q50 and going to replace the steering wheel air bag and the wire leads that come from the clockspring to the air bag. Do I have to replace the clock spring or can I replace just the wire leads? Does the clockspring affect the front turn signal lights?
will this also be the cause of a sticking horn?
My horn is stuck and ive had to remove the fuse. Its a bmw 5 series e60 2004
Obviosly when i press the horn something comes in contact with something else to create a connection but the contacts must be constantly in contact or some faulty wiring. The garage couldnt fix it! This clock spring is the only thing inbetween the airbag and horn
i have a 2006 Nissan Altima 2.5s unfortunately it did not come with the radio steering wheel controls but it does have cruise control I want to add the radio controls do you know can it be done and what parts what I need to do it
Heya, i know i'm probably a little late with this, but is there ever a specific reason why you would repair the clock spring? Or are they only replaced? And if they are repaired, what goes into all that? I get that every model probably has some differences based on what options are available on the steering wheel, but if you have had to repair one before, would you say that it's a difficult procedure?
Will a bad clockspring affect windshield wiper malfunctioning?
hi there. is there a link between the clockspring and the horn?
Would a bad clock spring affect my windows on a Charger? I'm pretty positive the clock spring is the problem with my steering wheel controls because almost all of them are not working properly or at all, but my driver's side window kind of just does what it wants. It has the auto up and down feature, and when you push the button, it will go down halfway then right back up, and the auto up is not functioning at all. The other windows all work properly, though. Also, is this something a "shadetree mechanic" could replace, or do I need to take it into a Dodge dealership? Thanks in advance!
Yes !thank you for explaining how and what this parts for!
Thank you for posting this video. Is it possible that replacing the clock spring plugs can fix the horn not working problem?
+W J it sure is
Is this the reason my horn don't work in my 2001 dodge ram? .? . The horn works when I lock the doors with my key fob so I know the horn is getting power and I checked all the fuses and relays?? Please help!! Also do I need a steering wheel puller after I get the air bag out?
what does adavance air bags do for you that regular airbags don't do
hi i have a 98 mustang gt, my airbags have deployed an i was wondering would i have to replace the clock spring too along with the airbags, airbag sensors, and module?? im pretty sure there is only 2 sensors up near the grill/bumper also would i have to replace anything else like wiring or just the things i said above?? thanks
Awesome HM. thanks for posting this.
I drive a 2007 Passat, the main issue I'm having since 3/2012 is an (airbag fault) that will not go away. After many hours of searching online, this very well may be the issue. My stealership wants to charge me $120.00 just to scan for codes. I currently have no other issues, well that and the service light for oil change intervals. Any input on an affordable place to buy a new clockspring, any input at this time will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
What would happen if while replacing a clock spring I accidently turned the clock spring and then turned it back ? would it make my steering wheel off center? Thanks
will this cause the airbag light to stay on in a kia optima 2004
Hi would this cause notchie steering on a smart fortwo 450 convertible bud
I have an 03 celica gts that the cc doesn't work but if I turn the wheel all the way to the left the cruise light comes on. Now my ? is, the SRS light is not on so does that mean I don't need to replace the clock spring. I don't care about cc, but I do want the airbag to work.
at what position should it be put back in the car?
What is the main failure of these?
I guess the name is historical now. thanks for a view I don't often see.
i replace for toyota rav4 2010 and after all i did now the hock is on and the airbag light is on still how to fix it.
Very informative
John Dawson Thank you!
I just put a new steering wheel with a new air bag but my controlers dont work no it would that be my problem to it
I have a clicking in my steering wheel. Mostly when I make turns. No lights are one. One garage said clock spring not worth fixing on a 2000. I asked another garage about it and they said just get rid of the car. Should I take it somewhere else to make sure it's the clock spring. I'm real scared to drive it even though they both said it's okay to drive. Again no lights are on Just a clicking sound in the steering wheel and they said it was not a cv joint
would it be easier to replace the steering column to fix a clock spring problem or just vice versa, I got a 2002 dodge intrepid and the turn signals don't work right, I replaced flasher and muli switch and now the cruise went out
Nick Parks It may be. If you were getting the parts from a junk yard I would say so.
Cool! Thanks for sharing!
Ford 2000 xlt ranger....fuel gage not working either..probably not fixing? Tank drop? 225k on truck...65 on jasper engine...ty
I have a Toyota Rav 4 2011 and it's horn isn't working except for when the wheel is turned. All of the other wheel buttons work but not the horn. I suspect it's a contact issue but was wondering how important is it to get an OEM part for $250 vs. Non oem for like $40? Thanks for your time!!
If it connects the airbag I get worried about cheap parts. dive deep it may actually be the same part.
HumbleMechanic thanks a lot for your input. I was thinking the same thing it just seems so crazy when they look identical to my eye.
What does “with slip ring” mean ?
Trying to choose right clockspring for my 2009 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5
Call the dealer with your vin. Have them confirm part number for you
Question. Whenever I've read a workshop manual, mainly mercedes, they say to make sure not to turn the wheel if you disconnect the steering wheel joint from the steering rack or else you will ruin the clock spring. Any idea how that would ruin it in that case? I would think if you wiggle or turn the wheel a bit it would not matter
If it made a full revolution you could have the clock spring out of time. Then when turning a full turn you could rip the ribbon cable.
+HumbleMechanic ahhhh ok that makes sense
Hello nice pic love the dog got one of my own got a question the horn on my kia ges stuck on when press the switch stops after I removed key from the lock cylinder when I lock the car with the remote horn works fine I don't think is the relay or the switch do you think is the clock spring causing this problem.
dany ordonez facebook.com/bestviralsofamerica/videos/974774209322449/
what is the difference between a clock spring and a steering angle column sensor? do they perform the same function?
+jeffrey Jackman This is a great topic. I'm gonna make a vid
I realize your video is a couple of years old but I have a question about the ribbon cable. I have a 1994 Infiniti J30 that has whisps of smoke that occasionally come up from the steering column. Along with this there is a constant clicking like a loud constant blinker even when it isn't on. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but about this same time the radio stopped working (radio does not have controls on steering wheel) The horn works fine, though the steering seems a little stiff. Again, may not be related. Do you know what could be causing the smoke and the clicking?
YIKES! When it comes to smoke that makes me nervous. I would recommend having the trim taken off and inspect the harness.
Better inspect your relays in your fuse box. If you have one right next to the column.
If you change the steering rack is it important to keep the steering wheel in the exact spot? Could it mess it up if you spin it 360degrees? Ty
+Random Guy if you spin it 360, it will make it really really sad. I usually make sure the steering wheel is locked before disconnecting the rack.
VW steering racks are keyed so it can only go in one spot unless you go 360 out.
Good idea thanks
How often I should or I have to change ths clock spring? Or for what reason I should change it? Thank youu
This is not really a maintenance part. They are solid until they fail. Sadly they don't give much warning before failing.
Cool beans man, thanks for replying.
I need a new clock spring in my 2002 Cougar. Now my car won't start and I keep blowing fuses in my engine, the fuse that connect the battery to the alternator. I have a new battery. And a new alternator.
sounds like maybe a bad wire?
Much appreciated .
so of i want to use a steering wheel out of a newer model car with steering wheel buttons i need the clock spring out of the corresponding vehicle. of i wasnt to use those buttons to control my stereo
i have a 01 dodge ram 1500. my airbag light stays on and my steering wheel dont lock
Did clock springs come about due to all the added steering wheel controls? I ask because vehicles worked just fine prior to clock springs.
That and airbags. The early ones were simple a piece of copper riding on another piece of copper. That was so the horn would work.
My turn signal wont go away after I make turns either to the left nor to the right, it will still keep flashing even though I made the turns Could this be that my clockspring is broken?
My horn stopped working but the turn signals (only other thing on the wheel) still work. I was able to honk the horn by messing with the relay so I know it's good from there. Is it possible for only the horn function of the clock spring to go bad?
kkeewiinn2 Yep, it could just be a small part of the clock spring that is bad.
Did you change the clock spring & did the horn work after you changed it
Could a fault in the clock spring give errors for all the 7 airbags in my car?
Basically i have the airbag warning coming on the dashboard when you first start the car, so i've had a diagnistic done
and it gave 15 errors like resistance too high, etc...
No. It would be 2 airbag faults max. You may have other issues going on.
Hello
I put a new clock spring in my 02 lincoln ls.
installed it with the wheel straight, so the steering wheel was in the 12 o clock position. It worked find turning the wheels left but after it got back to 12 o clock position and I turned right the clock spring broke. Did I do something wrong? It was just a simple snap in install.
+Herbert Hardy Yes! It was not centered correctly. One way is to count the number of turns and then center it. It must have been off center resulting in the ribbon cable breaking.
Horn cruise control don't work. Air bag light is on. Sounds like a clock spring. Is this correct?
Hey Zeke, That sounds like a really good possibility.
changed my clock spring but the airbag light is still on, horn finally works though. ALSO..........My fricken traction light keeps coming on now! WHAT DO I DO?????????
do you know anything about VW's recent recall? (#69L2)
+goober-nette goobernette They are still working on a fix. I will be recording a show for tomorrow talking a little more about it.
+HumbleMechanic Hi I have a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan AWD & I have an airbag light on that doesn't go off even if I disconnect the battery, can you give some advise, could it be the clock spring? I'm little cautious when it comes to mechanics cause some of them can rip you off thx .
So does it mean the aur bag cannot work wen your clock spring is bad ??
that is very likely
Damn, I thought this was going to be about how to position my coil overs :/
Hi, I have the same problem like in this video, but I dont know how to get that tape back in its place? someone could tell me how to roll the tape back? and where to connect it? car Volvo V70 2000
You are flirting with disaster trying to rewind it. Remember that is the connection to the drivers airbag as well. I know it stinks, but I would replace it.
Holy Jesus. Coming back to a 2012 video after finding the channel in 2018 is scary. Love your videos bro but this has to be a different person. I understand that people can cut their hair and grow a beard but even the voice sounds off.
Charles you look like jesus with glasses
LOL, I went as Jesus for a costume party. Got a lot of free beer. :D
HumbleMechanic why not just dress up as jesus everyday. Imagine how wasted you would be lmao
I needs help!!!
Anybody know why instrument cluster not working? ( It's been tested, and was good on another car btw) Heat/ ac fan works after a few minutes. A/C compressor runs while heat is on, headlights on makes stereo light dim. Air bag modual??? Thanks for any insight.
+Jeff Shiflett sounds like an ignition switch to me.
thx!
Sick hair
Charles. wow I was thinking who is this guy that hacked your channel.
+Brad Downs hahaha that's a few minutes ago isn't it. Hahaha. I think this was my 3rd video maybe
HumbleMechanic
my wife and I were just looking at some old pictures of us yesterday amazing how much we change.
wow the new you looks different.
+Jesse Lyons haha right!
Yea no kidding your hair switched places
I took mine out and put a quick release lmao

Now he has short hair and long Beard 🤣
Hahhaha
duuuudddeee whyd you cut your hair
Probably one of the worst info videos I have seen
Thanks. It’s the second video I ever made.
what a useless video. why not show us how it goes together if you're gonna take it all apart? lol
+Jenna Bryant it's a bad day if this comes apart on you. Really bad.
I have a 2001 National Dolphin RV and the cruise control works intermittently. It's on a Ford chassis called F53. Do you think it can be the clockspring?
2004 bmw 330 xi suddenly horn stopped working radio on off when visor lights pulled down air bag off.
BMW said it Clock spring and ignition switch
is that the likely problem One or both?. also a new airbag got installed about 1 year ago on the steering wheel .
