Why China Hates Winnie The Pooh

  • China just banned Winnie the Pooh. But why? Cenk Uygur, John Iadarola, and Brett Erlich, the hosts of The Young Turks, have the answer. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. tytnetwork.com/join/
“According to BBC News (via The Wrap), the Chinese government is blocking all mentions of Winnie The Pooh on social media sites in an attempt to stop people from associating President Xi Jinping with the cubby, honey-living children’s character. Apparently, Winnie The Pooh has been the go-to reference for people looking to poke fun at President Xi for a while now, but the government is ramping up its censorship operations in advance of the Communist Party Congress this fall so that President Xi can make a big show of his “grip on power”-as the BBC puts it-and try to shut down his critics.
As for why people used Winnie The Pooh in the first place, the BBC story doesn’t really get into it, but it suggests that replacing the president with a silly figure like the cartoon bear is a straightforward attempt to undermine the assertion that he’s superior to the rest of the population in some way. Whatever the reason, uses of Pooh’s name in Chinese are blocked on the country’s omnipresent WeChat app, and attempts to look up previously accessible Winnie The Pooh images now turn up nothing.
For Cheetos’ sake, we just hope Donald Trump doesn’t hear about this and steal the idea to ban things that people use to make fun of him.”

Apart from the sheer absurdity of this, on a more serious note, how much open-mindedness, tolerance, support for civil / human rights and liberties, and most of all, RESILIENCE, can you expect from the leader of the world's most populated nation? It's only because they're growing ever more insecure that they're behaving this way. The economy's doing nowhere near as well as the CCP would like the Chinese people to believe, China still has many social ills that remain unaddressed (and new ones are emerging), the overall global reputation of the CCP (note CCP, not China or the Chinese people) is still one of more suspicion / ambiguity than welcome, and let's face it, deep down these people are thugs running a highly inefficient and corrupt bureaucratic cartel.
While we know that Deng handpicked Jiang and Hu to be his successors, and China was relatively more open during the era of Jiang and Hu, nobody really knows how this man made his way to the pinnacle of power. There used to be some checks and balances in the CCP to make sure that not one man held all the power, but these mechanisms are no longer effectively in place. What we're seeing is the rise of someone whose despotism can only be matched or exceeded by Mao himself and the emperors of old.

I'm in China too! This news story is weird because TYT reports it like this is a new law. However, this is just one specific example of a disrespectful behavior that has been forbidden for a long time. It's just about having basic respect for the president of the country

free speech is basic right for the poor. If you have some reputable social standing and enough wealth, you will have more say than others and if you obey the hierarchy structure, it will be no harms coming to you. This is the basic rules for any functioning country. I in particular do not feel threatened when such behaviors are banned. It also does not empower me in any way if it is allowed. if you fight freedom of speech for such a laughable reason, you would first question what freedom of speech benefit society other than some people's amusement.

A good president would have changed their profile on social media with winnie the pooh
Not only Internet would have respected them more but they would also seem alot more mature and not a baby who cry over a joke

H Cheung Now, we have Chairman Xi. 5000 years, you think China will ever change? To a extend China and Russia will always run by dictators. It just take different forms, Slave Owners --> Feudalistic Emperor --> Communist "Chairmans".

Met someone the other day who didn't believe that the "right" (in China's terms) was communist.
I tried to point that out because I thought it was funny that they thought they were on the same side simply because an article used the term "right".
When they got their hackles up (they assumed I was called them a communist) I assured them I was not just that they should maybe do some research next time so someone won't think that
