On September 12, 2021, I had my first accident after over 40 years of driving. I was in my 2019 Outback, traveling down a 4 lane highway at over 65 mph. A car ran across an intersection just a few yards in front of me. When the driver saw me, she stopped halfway across my lane. I hit the front end of her car and I pretty much came to a dead stop. When I got out of my Subaru, people were astounded that I wasn't hurt. All I got was a scratch on my arm from an airbag. The driver of the other car was fine also. I went to the hospital to get checked out, my wife came to get me then we went to the tow company to get my gear from my car. When my wife saw the car, she started crying. She couldn't believe that I walked away from it. By the grace of God and Subaru technology, I am still here. By the way, I just picked up my 2022 Outback touring last Friday.
Glad to hear you're ok. How did the eyesight react? Did it beep like crazy and slammed on the brakes to mitigate the impact? I drive a 2018 3.6R. Bought the subaru for its safety features and its solid safety cage.
@@bubaa1 It happened so fast I really don't even remember any noise from the Eyesight. I do remember the car breaking before I could react. I remember knowing I'm going to hit the other ca rand hearing a big explosion. When I opened my eyes I just saw white, from the airbags and the smoke. It was just sitting there, no pain, my phone was still in its holder and my coffee wasn't even spilled.
@@patgarrett3746 yes...the auto braking does help mitigate the impact even for that split second. The computer can react so much faster. I have had the brakes activated a couple of times as I wasn't fast enough to react. And every time it happens I thank myself I'm in a subaru with eyesight. It hard not to have a car without one. I also really appreciate the lane keep assist and its nice and strong. Some folks think its too aggressive...but after driving my wife's EV bolt...the lane keep assist is so week and not aggressive to keep you in the lane. You really got to go out much further before it gently pulls you in...and I mean gentle. The eyesight is a much better system really telling you to get back into your lane or forces you to stay in. Now, your new 2022 will have the new added feature of lane centering.
Subaru occupies the same position now that Volvo owned for a few decades (but abandoned): - Not luxury, but no "cheap" models - Function over Form - Highly educated customers - Highest credit score customers - Rally racing pedigree - Outdoor oriented features - Ignores faddish trends (mostly) - Concentrates on a segment without chasing sales in other segments. 30 years ago in the Pacific Northwest, you would NEVER see a Subaru in a Casino parking lot, but every trailhead would be filled with them. Not quite the same anymore, but anyone seeking a solid, useful, all-weather tool has a Subaru on their list.
The reason we see more subaru's in casino parking lots (and similar situations) is because all of the subaru used car market. When I first bought my 2004 Subaru WRX Wagon it was extremely unique (I also live in the pacific northwest) and everyone regarded it as a nice sports car. Today though, it's considered the new 'honda'. Bought cheap used and 'riced out'. Although it's a much much better platform than a honda regardless. lol
The only other car I seriously considered before getting my STi was an Audi because of their similar rally pedigree and AWD system. A good AWD system and a nice set of winter tires is hard to beat when the snow starts dumping.
Everyone has a Subaru where I live in the northeast. Massachusetts is full of them. So is Upstate NY. I am in North Jersey and you see them everywhere here too. I like them, they are safe, discrete, and they don't make you look like a prick, unless you have those inane bumper stickers all over the back of your Outback
About 10 years ago I witnessed a Forester roll over at least 4 times down an embankment. The driver and passenger walked away with minor cuts and bruises. That was when I decided my next vehicle would likely be a Subaru.
Amen. I got a Forester as well I got rear ended by a 2018 suburban and my subaru had no scratches whatsoever their suburban had a minor scratch that they over reacted about. Don't mess with Subaru

I had a horrible accident a few years ago. My Subaru saved my life. Literally! I was hit by someone who ran a red light and it took the jaws of life to get me out of the car. My baby did beautifully! Of course she was destroyed but, while I had serious injuries, she did her job! The police who met me at the hospital told me, and I quote, “ Your car did it’s job for you today. Had you been in most makes and models of vehicles, we wouldn’t be talking right now.”
An old 97 legacy saved my brother's life in a rollover accident. It was crushed everywhere except the reinforced frame above his head. Police were shocked he survived. He bought a new Subaru from me and my Mom traded her old car in to get into an Ascent. We are all Subaru for life now.
1 May 2023, my 2010 Subaru saved my life. She was my buddy and I miss her. I was struck from behind by a commercial van which projected me out into the cross-traffic intersection. Thank goodness no other vehicles stuck me in the cross-traffic. I didn't see it coming and I thought the back of my Forester exploded. Turns out it did when the van struck the back it made the right rear tire explode. I'm so grateful for my Pearl and I wish we would have had many more years together. I am now in search of an other Forester. 2021 model year is my target. Wish me luck.
My wife was in accident with our new Ascent Touring last October. Just as described in the video, engine went low, front end crumpled, many airbags all around her including the one for her legs which saved some bruises at least, not a scratch on her! Starlink responded immediately and called State Police. This was only 5 miles from our home. I found a 2018 Outback Touring on my dealer's lot and bought it vis text to my salesman. We got our new 2022 Ascent Touring Dec. 23. Our 5th Subaru. Only Subaru for us.
Similar to some other comments, I walked away from a accident 5 weeks ago that totaled my 2020 outback. Crazy thing the guy that hit me was a Lyft driver that did something totally insane. Picking up my new outback (my 4th) on Saturday. Lifesaver.
I would add that the Driver Focus feature also beeps and flashes red on the console if your head tilts down for any reason. This could be due to a tired driver nodding off or someone looking at their phone. If you do it too many times, it asks if you want to pull over to get some rest. It will also lower whatever you are listening to so that you can't miss it yelling at you.
I was a parking lot attendant at a Subaru dealership for a year. I've driven many Subarus all the time. Short distances, long distances, gassing cars for test drives, driving new cars to the compound storage areas as we had very limited space for new cars on our lot. I would go on dealer trades, or to run some random errands for work, I've done all sorts of driving, and I must say, Subaru cars took me by surprise. I never really experienced driving new cars as a young car enthusiasts, or had the opportunity to. Subarus really impressed me with how well they keep you safe and all its safety features.
My new wilderness has possibly saved a life already, I was backing up from a parking spot at an intersection and a man in a wheel chair started to enter and I could not see him but my Blue Subaru did, it automatically hit the brakes, stopped and a disaster was prevented ...
Thats great, but i wish they made a more tech-free version of the new outback xts. I like to have more control over my car, I know its tested like crazy, but i still feel like the auto braking stuff is more likely to make me crash than ever actually save something
Last winter I was coming home from Wenatchee Washington (30 miles from my house), a deer committed suicide by running in front of a Crosstrek. The other 2 cars were too close to each other and it ended up being a 3 car and the deer pileup. It was a severe accident. It was the Crosstrek, a Forester and an Outback. There was snow over the highway. I watched in horror as the 3 Subaru’s tangled up with each other. I was in my wife’s Outback and pulled over. I went running up to the closest car, (the Forester). As I was running towards the accident, everyone involved were getting out of their Subie’s. I’m sure all 3 cars were totaled but everyone had only cuts and bruises. They were dazed but ok. I forgot my phone in my car, but someone called 911. I waited for the State Police, ambulance and fire department. Everyone in the accident refused to go to the hospital. I know that it was bc of the safety and construction of the Subie’s that kept everyone safe.
One thing I love about Subaru (specifically their Forester Models) is the lack of a blind spot (or minimization thereof). My first car was a 2003 Forester (affectionately named Dusty) and I loved it. I could see everything and it was like driving an aquarium, no blind spots. Having upgraded to a 2010 Forester a few years back, it's nearly the exact same feel to drive. Got ceramic brakes too, so those are nice, but yeah I'm definitely a Subaru for Life kinda person
I bought a 2016 Outback three (3) years ago with about 43,000 on it! It now has 77,000 and I have yet to take it back to the dealer for anything. It is perhaps one of the best SUV crossovers I have ever driven. I can qualify that I am a technical sales engineer who on average over 45 years changed out cars/pickup trucks and cars every two (2) years, as I drove a lot of kilometres/miles. I am still discovering things on the Outback that amazes me. Thank you to the engineers and assembly line technicians for building a GREAT vehicle.
2015 Outback with 91k, coming on 7 years old. Never had a check engine light. Just some recall work, and had to replace a squeaky wheel bearing. It amazing how reliable it is. It still has a great feature set, even by today's standards and the MPG is 27-32, which is amazing for an AWD wagon.
@@Zach4332 Also have a 2015 with 126,000 miles, both rear wheel bearings got noisy and were replaced (109,000&118,000), mpg 26-37.5. long term average 29.5
I was not in a serious accident but i was going 10mph and i got tboned going 35mph and walked away without a scratch. Subaru Legacy from 2019 was very good and kept me safe.
Loving our 2020 Forester. Feels safe, great visibility, comfort, great mpg and lots of fun off roading (mainly sand / dunes!). My first but certainly not my last Subaru.
This is one of the main reasons I switched to Subaru. I love my outback onyx but the safety makes me feel like I've made a good decision for me and my family.
I smashed my 2009 legacy into a concrete median going about 70, flipped twice. I literally opened the door and walked away without a Scratch. I swear they could’ve made a Subaru safety commercial out of me.
You chose wisely, I believe the crosstrek is in the top five of researched and vehicles on demand. Higher than the Forrester and outback which I was a bit surprised but those crosstreks are pretty hot right now. Enjoy The miles and journey ahead, stay away from those negative TH-cam videos that talk about how the CVT’s will blow out after 20,000 miles (especially tfl and Scotty Kilmer) blah blah blah, lol the more I see about videos hating Subarus the more I believe they are a better vehicle
What you mentioned about crumple zones and the engine dropping down in a collision is exactly my experience with my ‘97 Outback. I was hit from behind by a panel van, whose driver never applied his brakes. In fact it was a hit-and-run. But he pushed me into the vehicle ahead of me, whereupon the hood of my Outback crumpled and the engine dropped to the ground. I was a bit shaken but completely unharmed. Poor Subie was never the same, but he did his job of keeping me safe !
Subaru is a unique brand; I hope it can keep its unique character, particularly as it partners with Toyota for electric vehicles. Nobody knows Subaru like Alex; great video.
My daughter had a 2010 outback when she started driving. It totaled an Audi A4 when the guy dove in front of her and jammed on the brakes. Air bag went off . She walked away and I drove the car home. The car had 12) miles on it and the insurance company ut 10K into it to rebuild it. She drove it 5 more years to 200K and when a deer committed suicide on it the insurance totaled it. 200.00 bucks later I had it on the road and still running. I am very happy I spent the money for a 16 year old to drive a tank. We have had 5 Subarus and will never buy one without the Eyesight safety features. My wife has a 20' Onyx edition. It see a marriage by stopping the car before she could back into my Saturn Sky in the garage which was impossible to see. These features are gold and work better than any other ones I have seen.
Glad to hear your daughter was ok. I'd like to think I'm an attentive driver, but we're all human. The eyesight and reverse automatic braking are well worth it even if it avoids just one accident. The good thing now is that 2020 and newer all come standard with the eyesight, which you may already know this 😃
Very good video. I am a Subaru lover, I have never had any other cars. My first car was a 96 Legacy, it runs perfectly, I drove it cross the country once. I sold Legacy after two years because I got a brand new 2009 Forester. I am still driving the Forster everyday. I also purchased a new 2017 Outback when my wife started to work. She drives the Outback. The Outback was involved in an accident about two months ago. We got it back about a month ago, and it runs just fine. We are thinking bout getting an Ascent for the seating capacity at the moment. My experience with Subaru is, 1. They are safe. 2. AWD is perfect on snow. 3. They last forever (with regular maintenance). They are also great for outdoors, my neighbor has a 3.6 Outback, they use it to tow their RV trailer and boat all the time.
I was #3 in a 5 car accident a little more than a month ago in my 2019 Outback. I had Eyesight Adaptive Cruise Control Active, but on the closest setting due to being in LA traffic. The two cars in front of me stopped too short for ACC to adapt and for my stomping on the brakes to avoid. The Lexus behind me barely stopped. So I, unfortunately, nudged the Toyota in front of me and was slammed back into the Toyota when the Lexus hit me. Luckily, everyone came away with no injuries. The update so far: I get my Outback back next week; The Lexus and the Toyota were totaled. I'm thankful for a great repair shop through my insurance. My advice: Eyesight is amazing, but use the higher distance following settings and don't ever forget to maintain awareness. The Eyesight system is among the best, but it cannot fully replace your own vigilance on the road. Stay safe, friends!
the blind spot alert has saved my bacon a couple of times, usually when I am reversing out of a car park and dont see a car coming. I love my Forrester for this
I now have my third Outback, an additional option was to custom design the leather colours which gives it a unique feel. I am always pleased with the economy for such a big car.. on a trip it is always around the 6.8l/100 = 34mpg
Similar to Pat Garrett, I had my first car accident last year. A pickup truck rammed into the passenger side of my little Subaru Impreza, completely knocking the front right tire off the axel and smashing the entire right side of the cabin. The airbags deployed on the passenger side, nothing on the driver side. I was alright, despite bruising all over from the whiplash of the impact, but the Subaru did its job. I got a newer Impreza but I still miss my first Subie.
Subarus have always been very strong vehicles. My ‘01 Forester saved my life after some girl ran a red light and t-boned me while distracted on the phone.. I wouldn’t hesitate buying another one.
Love my 2022 Forester Wilderness. The most important safety feature for me is my ability to see over the hood! (short person here.) The horizontal piston position makes for a lower hood and better visibility.
I will say that the Forester is a VERY stable vehicle. I mistakenly lifter a Forester Sport on my rack and locked the racked in place. Get under it and inspect the vehicle. I notice one lift arm is not under the vehicle. The vehicle was holding steady with only 3 arms supporting it. Stupid mistake but glad to know it's rigid.
Just bought my 2nd subaru two days ago. I had a 2019 wrx, but I now have a 2022 outback premium. My family has grown and I needed a practical vehicle to drive them in. I'm confident that my subaru is going to keep them as safe as possible. I love my new subie.

I have a 2017 Outback and I love her as much today as the day I bought it ♥️we had to go out to Arizona and drive up to Showlow AZ curvy two lane roads , the last time we had to go out for my father in-laws funeral we rented a Volvo and it was all over the road , I told my hubby if I’m driving those roads again we need to rent a Subaru. They only had one , it was a Legacy , it handled so well on those mountain roads . I’m a true Subaru lover ♥️♥️♥️
Just traded a 2015 Outback Limited for a 2020 Outback Touring. All of these safety features LOWERED my car insurance! 2020 model has 2x the replacement cost of the old 2015, but my insurance went down! While I find the 2020 Touring XT seat uncomfortable, those Steering Responsive and Auto Dimming headlights are awesome. No longer is our Subaru for daytime only (and our VW for nights out). Both are LED now, but the Subie's lights are even better!
I had a collision with a young guy driving a Ford Mustang. He hit me going pretty fast. Hit whole front end was collapsed, my car wasn't even totaled. Both of us walked away without injury, but man did it make me thankful I bought an Impreza, not a scratch on me.
Firstly, thank you so much Alex for all your Subaru videos. I am learning so much after purchasing my very first Subaru Outback! Don’t know why I didn’t know about these and that they are so highly rated for safety. Hope I never have to test out the safety features with an accident but it sounds like many people have walked away with few injuries.
I love the headlights in this car. I drive rural roads and I am much more confident with these than my older crv (terrible lights). Auto dimming? Not sure I ever want to do without that.
I also drive backroads a lot for work, I prefer not having auto-dimming on because my 2018 outback notices parked cars in driveways and can dim the lights unexpectedly on turns. Might have been addressed but not my favorite feature, still love the car tho.
Drivers side knee is a great added feature. Never knew about the door hook. I’ve seen it just didn’t know what it would do. Thorough safety review. 🏆 keep making safe great vehicles Subaru. Don’t cave or cut corners like others.
One thing you didn't mention was that new Subaru vehicles also have rear seatbelt detection and will warn you if someone in the rear seat is not belted. This is not a common feature in most cars today. There is also a warning to remind the drivers to "look in the back seat" so children are not accidentally left there on a hot day.
I have a cargo bag that stays put, by design, with the rear seat belt. I wondered why I kept getting the reminder to check that back seat since nobody was sitting there until I realized that the belt itself was detected. Great feature.
i actually got rear ended this morning in my 2007 outback and the back was pretty in tacked, compared to the guy who hit me who crushed the whole front of his car, going 40.
I was just rear-ended on an Interstate with a 60-mph difference. A current-generation Malibu went underneath my Outback Wilderness. Car's totaled but I walked away, with minor discomfort.
The Only time my driver detection works on my Forester is when I’m turning Left. I’m looking to the Left to see how to navigate the turn and it alerts me. But I can be driving straight and looking to the Left for long periods and the thing never alerts me. I do Love when I’m driving and get too close to the outside line or the center line and my Forester will drive itself back into the center of the lane I’m driving in. Another thing I really enjoy is the adaptive cruise control. When I’m driving into the city, I get up to speed, set my cruise and if there’s a car in front of me that’s driving slower and I can’t pass, my Subie will slow down. When I get into the city and I’m coming to a red light and the cars in front of me stop, my Forester will bring me to a stop. When traffic starts moving again, I simply touch the gas pedal and my Forester will track behind them. I had a guy cut me off the other day. I was traveling in the slow lane and he passed me, but then decided that he needed to take an exit. The speed limit was 45mph and I was going about 48. He almost clipped the front of my car and my Subie slammed the brakes on and swerved to avoid being hit. In all honesty, I didn’t have time to respond, but my Subie did. I was very impressed.
I have a 2010 Outback that has given great service with only failure being the passenger seatbelt/airbag switch. Repair by Subaru requires complete seat replacement at a cost of about $2000. installed.
I love my 2012 Subaru Outback limited model. It has everything a person would look for in a modern car. It has 12 speakers, a navigation system, heated seats, satellite radio, a sunroof, a backup camera, nice leather seats, a spacious boot, Subaru's legendary AWD system, and it has 8.7 inches of ground clearance. It's great for me, someone who lives in the suburbs but heads to the trails on the weekends. Though I'm only 23, it appealed to me since it is simple and humble, a rare commodity these days. I have 112,000 miles on it and it runs just fine. I have just a few slight niggles with it, however. The wind noise on the highway isn't atrocious, but I suspect it would be vastly improved on the later models. The 2.5i engine is fine, but it does feel a bit underpowered going up mountains or when I carry a lot of heavy things with me. I also find that the CVT ponders for a bit until it gives you acceleration. It ponders, presumable asking itself "am I a nuclear power station? Am I a pencil? Wait a minute I'm a transmission" and it eventually finds the speed you were looking for. Those couple of faults I have with the car blend into insignificance when compared with all its positive attributes, so they aren't a dealbreaker for me. The only car I would consider would be a newer Outback with a quieter interior and more safety tech like BSM.
I purchased a pre-owned lease return 2019 Subaru Outback for my wife after she drove a 2019 Toyota RAV4. She stated the Outback felt safer and more planted to the Road. Subaru is like a Japanese Volvo since both Subaru and Volvos are safe cars. However Subaru has AWD and are more reliable. Buying a Subaru is a no brainer after test driving other cars.
Alex, just started watching your content and i have to say, great job sir! Especially with a cell phone! I like that you aren't pushing the dealership specifically (although that is somewhat baked in, we know that..) but you are directing useful Subie content to us just the same. For instance - the engine location where it affects front collision safety. Did not know that. I do seem to remember a fire fighter client of mine saying that the tops of the "B" pillar are something like 5 layers of overlapping steel and that it is quite the challenge at a crash to roll the roof back. Is that true? Please show us more on the way the frame is done for safety if you can. Again, great vids, it's all about the contents' quality and youve nailed it. Cheers!
Thanks Ron! I try my best to provide helpful content so I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. I'm not privy to all of the details on the engineering behind the frame but I wouldn't be surprised if it's made with 5 layers. I do know the "B" pillar is one of the strongest parts though. It's designed to stay in place even with hard side impact so I can also see how it would be difficult to cut through.

3 Subarus- a 2019 Outback, a 2013 Outback, and a 2019 Impreza Hatchback. The safest, neatest, and best-built cars we have ever had. There is no earthly reason to ever buy a different car. These vehicles are simply the best.
The hook and latch setup in the rear door openings is also in my 2008 Outback. After 160,000km (100,000 miles) the car is still tight despite lots of rough road use. The car does not flex over uneven ground and I wonder if the hook and latch setup contributes to this solidity.
Let’s say that most of car makers just make cars focusing on look or speed, some on durability others focus on luxury but Subaru focus on all of that trying to deliver the best overall cars at the best price and I think we can easily say that with the 2020 models Subaru really reached the apex. I moved to the US and for the first time in my life I was able to think to buy a fully loaded car with leather seats, premium audio, super safe, fast enough and AWD for less than 50k and I think which there is only one automaker that gives it all… so that’s when I got my Legacy Touring and after one year of ownership this car never stops surprising me.
I survived in my Subaru forester 2021 t boned in drivers door spun into traffic hitting a second time ! I had emergency surgery removing my spleen and ribs cracked but I came home still recovering. I swear by the safety of subaru
Love my Outback . I like that the doors lock into the frame and it’s built on a triangle frame . I had a great test drive and the guy showed me everything , fell in love with it - I love it as much today as the day I bought it ♥️I just wish I found Subaru years ago ♥️♥️♥️I also have to add the Subaru is the first car I did not blow the transmission with in the first 5 yrs 🤦♀️ that is 2 fords Taurus’ and Honda Odyssey. All three purchased new .
On December 28, 2019 I got run off the highway by another while driving my 2018 Legacy. After going off the highway the car jumped a ditch and hit a tree head on at @40 mph. No airbags deployed. My chest was pushed against the steering wheel cracking 3 ribs. When I reported the airbag issue to the Subaru dealer nobody really wanted to talk to me about it.
I have a Subaru Forester 2020 that just crashed on Dec 2, 2021 when we are on our way to Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park. I am not sure what really causes the crash. All I can remember was we are moving at 30MPH and in a split second I heard a loud sound (not sure if the tire exploded or hit something but the road was clear) and I had zero visibility because all the airbags went off. I held tight on the steering wheel until it crashed on the huge pine tree. Luckily we passed all the cliffs before the crash. I got a couple of minor bruises on my right hand and arm possibly because of the airbag. My wife and myself were pulled from the car safe and no injuries. I am going to buy another car once the insurance settled everything but I am kind of reluctant to get another Subaru because of the accident. I am not comfortable with lane centering and lane departure features because of the feeling of someone will immediately hold the steering wheel while you are driving.
Back in the early 2000s i witnessed an accident involving a Forrester that was forced into the median on i44 near Springfield Missouri. The subaru came into the path of two loaded trailer trucks. This was an almost unbelievable terrible looking crash. The subaru was hit head on by first one and then the second truck scattering debris all over the road. I was immediately behind truck 2, and passed an office desk sized piece of steel realizing it was the Forrester. Miraculously the driver had only broken both legs which is bad, but she lived. I don't know how many cars could have been any better. Pretty much convinced me to get a 2010 outback. Now we are in a 2020 outback, and it is an awesome car.
Without even watching any videos about subaru's safety features I can say that in the event of a head on collision the engine is pushed backwards on a decline to avoid the occupants of the vehicle. Unless of course if the impact is at around 180km/h then the vehicle usually explodes on impact...
We own 2 Outbacks, Limited. A '16 and an '18. The only complaints I have is, 1) the noise coming from the engine during acceleration. 2) I hope they have started outfitting Subaru's with a longer life battery. BOTH of ours went out a couple of months prior to the 30 month warranty. BUY yourself a quality battery. Outside of these, which are minor, our Subaru's run like a clock and really feel stable on long roads and most importantly, on winding roads.
My 19outback didn’t come with a roll over warning sticker. I drive it very aggressively on turns and this thing handles pretty damn well for a family car. It’s always planted, and rotates amazingly
My 2010 outback with antiskid and abs disabled is the most fun I have ever had in a car during winter. I see snow, I take my car out for a drive. Edit : I also drive agressively on turns and the car always stays planted. Drives very well for a car with good ground clearance and that is considered a family car.
@@jamesdarcy3902 My 2010 takes about 1 pint of oil every 3000 miles roughly and has been this way ever since I have it. I have been given a 2013 that looks exactly like my 2010 except it has a blown CVT.. If you do your maintenance (and change your CVT fluid) your car should last a long time. I have the good old manual transmission (6speed) in my 2010 and I will keep it probably until it just gives up. Other cars are nice and all, but my Outback is simple has 6 speeds with full time 50/50 AWD. A subaru is also so simple to work on.. I do all of my work by myself mostly..
@mrweedtouch Subarus will always burn a little bit of oil, due to the boxer engine, but it's negligible, and it doesn't mean that anything is wrong with it. The cylinders are just sideways.
also gas door being on passenger side was put there incase you ran out and putting gas on the side of a busy highway or side roads , you dont have to worry about getting clip by cars or trucks passing by..
Interesting point but there should be no reason for running out of gas. Check the gauge, and there is also a low fuel warning light which I think beeps when it comes on.
My lovely UK spec 2005 Legacy has that rear door button hook thing. Now I know what it's for. 17 years old, 188k miles and everything still works. I'm in no hurry to replace it, unless a H6 Legacy Wagon with manual transmission comes along
I love Subaru and own a 2020 Touring XT and a 2022 Touring. Safety on the road with incredible agility and speed. We love the comfort of the touring level. There are two wishes for Subaru that I’ve heard from many owners (1) increase the quality of the front and rear back up cameras (2) offer as an option a built in dash cam front and rear; talk about a safety feature need. It seems they could incorporate a dash cam in the eyesight system. Make it optional.
You forgot AVH or Hill Holder Assist. My car once rolled back and i almost got my wife dead who was behind the car. I no longer worry about that ever since i changed to a Subaru with hill holder assist.
I just bought a 94' Subaru and my dad was telling me how safe they are. The power steering on my car isn't as strong as the other cars I've driven which to me makes it easier for me to drive and steer it.
On Friday , December 2nd I was T Boned at an intersection from a driver that was driving at least 50mph on a rainy night road. My '20 Forester took the impact like a champ from the side passenger side. I got out unscathed thankfully.
There are exactly two downsides I know of the Subaru drivetrain layout: it makes changing spark plugs a PITA, and it increases front overhang, thus limiting approach angle offroad. Note that head gasket issues are *not* inherent to a boxer. That's a long since solved problem.
Increased overhang compared to what? A longitudinal based 4x4 architecture is way worse. The length of the boxer 4 is half of an inline 4. In a FWD transverse based Haldex style AWD system, both the engine and transmission are cantilevered over the front axle (the Subaru’s transmission is behind the front axle). So while in theory the front overhang may look longer in a Subaru, in reality the oil pan, cooling system, front bumper, and other components play a larger role with the approach angle than the few inches of engine over the front axle. Oh, and to put the final nail in the coffin, the Forester’s standard approach angle actually higher than any of it’s key competitors (RAV 4, CR-V, Mazda CX-5/CX-50, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, and the Jeep Cherokee). The Bronco Sport bests the Forester here, and has nothing to do with it’s drivetrain layout shared with the Escape.
My 2011 Subaru Impreza saved my life back in January when someone hit me going through a red light. He was in an SUV, the roads were slippery from snow. He clipped me on the front and we both spun around. I walked away without a scratch and so did he.
Personally if your looking for a reliable car that can off-road and do day to day stuff luxury or not choose a Subaru the started symmetrical all wheel drive comes in handy in the winter I don’t drive I am only 13 years old but my dad owns a 2020 outback and my mom owns a 2018 forester and they are very reliable it really depends on how you treat the car I am not saying that Subaru’s don’t break down every car breaks down but you always want a car that has low downtime and Subaru is the one
On September 12, 2021, I had my first accident after over 40 years of driving. I was in my 2019 Outback, traveling down a 4 lane highway at over 65 mph. A car ran across an intersection just a few yards in front of me. When the driver saw me, she stopped halfway across my lane. I hit the front end of her car and I pretty much came to a dead stop. When I got out of my Subaru, people were astounded that I wasn't hurt. All I got was a scratch on my arm from an airbag. The driver of the other car was fine also. I went to the hospital to get checked out, my wife came to get me then we went to the tow company to get my gear from my car. When my wife saw the car, she started crying. She couldn't believe that I walked away from it. By the grace of God and Subaru technology, I am still here. By the way, I just picked up my 2022 Outback touring last Friday.

@@bubaa1 It happened so fast I really don't even remember any noise from the Eyesight. I do remember the car breaking before I could react. I remember knowing I'm going to hit the other ca rand hearing a big explosion. When I opened my eyes I just saw white, from the airbags and the smoke. It was just sitting there, no pain, my phone was still in its holder and my coffee wasn't even spilled.
@@patgarrett3746 yes...the auto braking does help mitigate the impact even for that split second. The computer can react so much faster. I have had the brakes activated a couple of times as I wasn't fast enough to react. And every time it happens I thank myself I'm in a subaru with eyesight. It hard not to have a car without one. I also really appreciate the lane keep assist and its nice and strong. Some folks think its too aggressive...but after driving my wife's EV bolt...the lane keep assist is so week and not aggressive to keep you in the lane. You really got to go out much further before it gently pulls you in...and I mean gentle. The eyesight is a much better system really telling you to get back into your lane or forces you to stay in. Now, your new 2022 will have the new added feature of lane centering.

- Function over Form
- Highly educated customers
- Highest credit score customers
- Rally racing pedigree
- Outdoor oriented features
- Ignores faddish trends (mostly)
- Concentrates on a segment without chasing sales in other segments.
30 years ago in the Pacific Northwest, you would NEVER see a Subaru in a Casino parking lot, but every trailhead would be filled with them.
Not quite the same anymore, but anyone seeking a solid, useful, all-weather tool has a Subaru on their list.
I wish they'd avoid the fad of turning all the interior controls into a shitty iPad.
The reason we see more subaru's in casino parking lots (and similar situations) is because all of the subaru used car market. When I first bought my 2004 Subaru WRX Wagon it was extremely unique (I also live in the pacific northwest) and everyone regarded it as a nice sports car. Today though, it's considered the new 'honda'. Bought cheap used and 'riced out'. Although it's a much much better platform than a honda regardless. lol
Almost everybody has a subaru in PNW still if they have any inkling of outdoor/adventure in them OR live in an area that gets snow.
The only other car I seriously considered before getting my STi was an Audi because of their similar rally pedigree and AWD system. A good AWD system and a nice set of winter tires is hard to beat when the snow starts dumping.
Everyone has a Subaru where I live in the northeast. Massachusetts is full of them. So is Upstate NY. I am in North Jersey and you see them everywhere here too. I like them, they are safe, discrete, and they don't make you look like a prick, unless you have those inane bumper stickers all over the back of your Outback
My wife’s life was saved from a driver’s side impact by a pickup traveling over 40mph. That was our 5th Outback. Proudly driving our 6th.
About 10 years ago I witnessed a Forester roll over at least 4 times down an embankment. The driver and passenger walked away with minor cuts and bruises. That was when I decided my next vehicle would likely be a Subaru.

You can also push the button and as long as there are visible lines on the road the car will stay centered on the lane. No cruise control needed.
I had a horrible accident a few years ago. My Subaru saved my life. Literally! I was hit by someone who ran a red light and it took the jaws of life to get me out of the car. My baby did beautifully! Of course she was destroyed but, while I had serious injuries, she did her job! The police who met me at the hospital told me, and I quote, “ Your car did it’s job for you today. Had you been in most makes and models of vehicles, we wouldn’t be talking right now.”

An old 97 legacy saved my brother's life in a rollover accident. It was crushed everywhere except the reinforced frame above his head. Police were shocked he survived. He bought a new Subaru from me and my Mom traded her old car in to get into an Ascent. We are all Subaru for life now.

1 May 2023, my 2010 Subaru saved my life. She was my buddy and I miss her. I was struck from behind by a commercial van which projected me out into the cross-traffic intersection. Thank goodness no other vehicles stuck me in the cross-traffic. I didn't see it coming and I thought the back of my Forester exploded. Turns out it did when the van struck the back it made the right rear tire explode. I'm so grateful for my Pearl and I wish we would have had many more years together. I am now in search of an other Forester. 2021 model year is my target. Wish me luck.

My wife was in accident with our new Ascent Touring last October. Just as described in the video, engine went low, front end crumpled, many airbags all around her including the one for her legs which saved some bruises at least, not a scratch on her! Starlink responded immediately and called State Police. This was only 5 miles from our home. I found a 2018 Outback Touring on my dealer's lot and bought it vis text to my salesman. We got our new 2022 Ascent Touring Dec. 23. Our 5th Subaru. Only Subaru for us.
Similar to some other comments, I walked away from a accident 5 weeks ago that totaled my 2020 outback. Crazy thing the guy that hit me was a Lyft driver that did something totally insane. Picking up my new outback (my 4th) on Saturday. Lifesaver.

I would add that the Driver Focus feature also beeps and flashes red on the console if your head tilts down for any reason. This could be due to a tired driver nodding off or someone looking at their phone. If you do it too many times, it asks if you want to pull over to get some rest. It will also lower whatever you are listening to so that you can't miss it yelling at you.
I was a parking lot attendant at a Subaru dealership for a year. I've driven many Subarus all the time. Short distances, long distances, gassing cars for test drives, driving new cars to the compound storage areas as we had very limited space for new cars on our lot. I would go on dealer trades, or to run some random errands for work, I've done all sorts of driving, and I must say, Subaru cars took me by surprise. I never really experienced driving new cars as a young car enthusiasts, or had the opportunity to. Subarus really impressed me with how well they keep you safe and all its safety features.
My new wilderness has possibly saved a life already, I was backing up from a parking spot at an intersection and a man in a wheel chair started to enter and I could not see him but my Blue Subaru did, it automatically hit the brakes, stopped and a disaster was prevented ...

Thats great, but i wish they made a more tech-free version of the new outback xts. I like to have more control over my car, I know its tested like crazy, but i still feel like the auto braking stuff is more likely to make me crash than ever actually save something
Last winter I was coming home from Wenatchee Washington (30 miles from my house), a deer committed suicide by running in front of a Crosstrek. The other 2 cars were too close to each other and it ended up being a 3 car and the deer pileup.
It was a severe accident.
It was the Crosstrek, a Forester and an Outback.
There was snow over the highway.
I watched in horror as the 3 Subaru’s tangled up with each other.
I was in my wife’s Outback and pulled over.
I went running up to the closest car, (the Forester). As I was running towards the accident, everyone involved were getting out of their Subie’s.
I’m sure all 3 cars were totaled but everyone had only cuts and bruises. They were dazed but ok.
I forgot my phone in my car, but someone called 911.
I waited for the State Police, ambulance and fire department.
Everyone in the accident refused to go to the hospital.
I know that it was bc of the safety and construction of the Subie’s that kept everyone safe.
I have a 2020 outback and love it. The stability on wet and snowy roads is amazing!
One thing I love about Subaru (specifically their Forester Models) is the lack of a blind spot (or minimization thereof). My first car was a 2003 Forester (affectionately named Dusty) and I loved it. I could see everything and it was like driving an aquarium, no blind spots. Having upgraded to a 2010 Forester a few years back, it's nearly the exact same feel to drive. Got ceramic brakes too, so those are nice, but yeah I'm definitely a Subaru for Life kinda person

Noticed the same in my 06 outback. I can see everything.
I bought a 2016 Outback three (3) years ago with about 43,000 on it! It now has 77,000 and I have yet to take it back to the dealer for anything. It is perhaps one of the best SUV crossovers I have ever driven. I can qualify that I am a technical sales engineer who on average over 45 years changed out cars/pickup trucks and cars every two (2) years, as I drove a lot of kilometres/miles. I am still discovering things on the Outback that amazes me. Thank you to the engineers and assembly line technicians for building a GREAT vehicle.
2015 Outback with 91k, coming on 7 years old. Never had a check engine light. Just some recall work, and had to replace a squeaky wheel bearing. It amazing how reliable it is. It still has a great feature set, even by today's standards and the MPG is 27-32, which is amazing for an AWD wagon.
I bought my 2016 brand new i now have over 100k miles on it …. I won’t trade it in for anything… I love it

I was not in a serious accident but i was going 10mph and i got tboned going 35mph and walked away without a scratch. Subaru Legacy from 2019 was very good and kept me safe.

Loving our 2020 Forester. Feels safe, great visibility, comfort, great mpg and lots of fun off roading (mainly sand / dunes!). My first but certainly not my last Subaru.
I'd really like to get one out in the sand dunes! Haven't experienced that yet.
This is one of the main reasons I switched to Subaru. I love my outback onyx but the safety makes me feel like I've made a good decision for me and my family.
I smashed my 2009 legacy into a concrete median going about 70, flipped twice. I literally opened the door and walked away without a Scratch. I swear they could’ve made a Subaru safety commercial out of me.

You chose wisely, I believe the crosstrek is in the top five of researched and vehicles on demand. Higher than the Forrester and outback which I was a bit surprised but those crosstreks are pretty hot right now. Enjoy The miles and journey ahead, stay away from those negative TH-cam videos that talk about how the CVT’s will blow out after 20,000 miles (especially tfl and Scotty Kilmer) blah blah blah, lol the more I see about videos hating Subarus the more I believe they are a better vehicle
What you mentioned about crumple zones and the engine dropping down in a collision is exactly my experience with my ‘97 Outback. I was hit from behind by a panel van, whose driver never applied his brakes. In fact it was a hit-and-run. But he pushed me into the vehicle ahead of me, whereupon the hood of my Outback crumpled and the engine dropped to the ground. I was a bit shaken but completely unharmed. Poor Subie was never the same, but he did his job of keeping me safe !
Subaru is a unique brand; I hope it can keep its unique character, particularly as it partners with Toyota for electric vehicles. Nobody knows Subaru like Alex; great video.

My daughter had a 2010 outback when she started driving. It totaled an Audi A4 when the guy dove in front of her and jammed on the brakes. Air bag went off . She walked away and I drove the car home. The car had 12) miles on it and the insurance company ut 10K into it to rebuild it. She drove it 5 more years to 200K and when a deer committed suicide on it the insurance totaled it. 200.00 bucks later I had it on the road and still running. I am very happy I spent the money for a 16 year old to drive a tank. We have had 5 Subarus and will never buy one without the Eyesight safety features. My wife has a 20' Onyx edition. It see a marriage by stopping the car before she could back into my Saturn Sky in the garage which was impossible to see. These features are gold and work better than any other ones I have seen.
Glad to hear your daughter was ok. I'd like to think I'm an attentive driver, but we're all human. The eyesight and reverse automatic braking are well worth it even if it avoids just one accident. The good thing now is that 2020 and newer all come standard with the eyesight, which you may already know this 😃
Very good video. I am a Subaru lover, I have never had any other cars. My first car was a 96 Legacy, it runs perfectly, I drove it cross the country once. I sold Legacy after two years because I got a brand new 2009 Forester. I am still driving the Forster everyday. I also purchased a new 2017 Outback when my wife started to work. She drives the Outback. The Outback was involved in an accident about two months ago. We got it back about a month ago, and it runs just fine. We are thinking bout getting an Ascent for the seating capacity at the moment. My experience with Subaru is, 1. They are safe. 2. AWD is perfect on snow. 3. They last forever (with regular maintenance). They are also great for outdoors, my neighbor has a 3.6 Outback, they use it to tow their RV trailer and boat all the time.
I was #3 in a 5 car accident a little more than a month ago in my 2019 Outback. I had Eyesight Adaptive Cruise Control Active, but on the closest setting due to being in LA traffic. The two cars in front of me stopped too short for ACC to adapt and for my stomping on the brakes to avoid. The Lexus behind me barely stopped. So I, unfortunately, nudged the Toyota in front of me and was slammed back into the Toyota when the Lexus hit me. Luckily, everyone came away with no injuries. The update so far: I get my Outback back next week; The Lexus and the Toyota were totaled. I'm thankful for a great repair shop through my insurance. My advice: Eyesight is amazing, but use the higher distance following settings and don't ever forget to maintain awareness. The Eyesight system is among the best, but it cannot fully replace your own vigilance on the road. Stay safe, friends!

I now have my third Outback, an additional option was to custom design the leather colours which gives it a unique feel. I am always pleased with the economy for such a big car.. on a trip it is always around the 6.8l/100 = 34mpg
Similar to Pat Garrett, I had my first car accident last year. A pickup truck rammed into the passenger side of my little Subaru Impreza, completely knocking the front right tire off the axel and smashing the entire right side of the cabin. The airbags deployed on the passenger side, nothing on the driver side. I was alright, despite bruising all over from the whiplash of the impact, but the Subaru did its job. I got a newer Impreza but I still miss my first Subie.
Subarus have always been very strong vehicles. My ‘01 Forester saved my life after some girl ran a red light and t-boned me while distracted on the phone.. I wouldn’t hesitate buying another one.
Love my 2022 Forester Wilderness. The most important safety feature for me is my ability to see over the hood! (short person here.) The horizontal piston position makes for a lower hood and better visibility.
My bf was t-boned at 50+ mph by someone running a red while in his ‘05 Outback. Car was totaled, but he walked away with zero injuries!

I trashed my mom's CRV because of this. My car is manual, my mom's automatic and I got confused. That feature would have saved me $1000 in repairs!
I will say that the Forester is a VERY stable vehicle. I mistakenly lifter a Forester Sport on my rack and locked the racked in place. Get under it and inspect the vehicle. I notice one lift arm is not under the vehicle. The vehicle was holding steady with only 3 arms supporting it. Stupid mistake but glad to know it's rigid.

I have a 2017 Outback and I love her as much today as the day I bought it ♥️we had to go out to Arizona and drive up to Showlow AZ curvy two lane roads , the last time we had to go out for my father in-laws funeral we rented a Volvo and it was all over the road , I told my hubby if I’m driving those roads again we need to rent a Subaru. They only had one , it was a Legacy , it handled so well on those mountain roads . I’m a true Subaru lover ♥️♥️♥️

Just traded a 2015 Outback Limited for a 2020 Outback Touring. All of these safety features LOWERED my car insurance! 2020 model has 2x the replacement cost of the old 2015, but my insurance went down! While I find the 2020 Touring XT seat uncomfortable, those Steering Responsive and Auto Dimming headlights are awesome. No longer is our Subaru for daytime only (and our VW for nights out). Both are LED now, but the Subie's lights are even better!
I had a collision with a young guy driving a Ford Mustang. He hit me going pretty fast. Hit whole front end was collapsed, my car wasn't even totaled. Both of us walked away without injury, but man did it make me thankful I bought an Impreza, not a scratch on me.
Firstly, thank you so much Alex for all your Subaru videos. I am learning so much after purchasing my very first Subaru Outback! Don’t know why I didn’t know about these and that they are so highly rated for safety. Hope I never have to test out the safety features with an accident but it sounds like many people have walked away with few injuries.
I love the headlights in this car. I drive rural roads and I am much more confident with these than my older crv (terrible lights). Auto dimming? Not sure I ever want to do without that.
In my opinion they're some of the best looking and best performing led headlights out there!

I also drive backroads a lot for work, I prefer not having auto-dimming on because my 2018 outback notices parked cars in driveways and can dim the lights unexpectedly on turns. Might have been addressed but not my favorite feature, still love the car tho.

There’s Detroit iron that has been sitting in a farmers field for three decades that has less rust than a ten year old Subaru.
Drivers side knee is a great added feature. Never knew about the door hook. I’ve seen it just didn’t know what it would do. Thorough safety review. 🏆 keep making safe great vehicles Subaru. Don’t cave or cut corners like others.

One thing you didn't mention was that new Subaru vehicles also have rear seatbelt detection and will warn you if someone in the rear seat is not belted. This is not a common feature in most cars today. There is also a warning to remind the drivers to "look in the back seat" so children are not accidentally left there on a hot day.
I have a cargo bag that stays put, by design, with the rear seat belt. I wondered why I kept getting the reminder to check that back seat since nobody was sitting there until I realized that the belt itself was detected. Great feature.

I was just rear-ended on an Interstate with a 60-mph difference. A current-generation Malibu went underneath my Outback Wilderness. Car's totaled but I walked away, with minor discomfort.
The Only time my driver detection works on my Forester is when I’m turning Left. I’m looking to the Left to see how to navigate the turn and it alerts me. But I can be driving straight and looking to the Left for long periods and the thing never alerts me.
I do Love when I’m driving and get too close to the outside line or the center line and my Forester will drive itself back into the center of the lane I’m driving in.
Another thing I really enjoy is the adaptive cruise control. When I’m driving into the city, I get up to speed, set my cruise and if there’s a car in front of me that’s driving slower and I can’t pass, my Subie will slow down. When I get into the city and I’m coming to a red light and the cars in front of me stop, my Forester will bring me to a stop. I had a guy cut me off the other day. I was traveling in the slow lane and he passed me, but then decided that he needed to take an exit. The speed limit was 45mph and I was going about 48. He almost clipped the front of my car and my Subie slammed the brakes on and swerved to avoid being hit. In all honesty, I didn’t have time to respond, but my Subie did. I was very impressed.

I have a 2010 Outback that has given great service with only failure being the passenger seatbelt/airbag switch. Repair by Subaru requires complete seat replacement at a cost of about $2000. installed.
I love my 2012 Subaru Outback limited model. It has everything a person would look for in a modern car. It has 12 speakers, a navigation system, heated seats, satellite radio, a sunroof, a backup camera, nice leather seats, a spacious boot, Subaru's legendary AWD system, and it has 8.7 inches of ground clearance. It's great for me, someone who lives in the suburbs but heads to the trails on the weekends. Though I'm only 23, it appealed to me since it is simple and humble, a rare commodity these days. I have 112,000 miles on it and it runs just fine. I have just a few slight niggles with it, however. The wind noise on the highway isn't atrocious, but I suspect it would be vastly improved on the later models. The 2.5i engine is fine, but it does feel a bit underpowered going up mountains or when I carry a lot of heavy things with me. I also find that the CVT ponders for a bit until it gives you acceleration. It ponders, presumable asking itself "am I a nuclear power station? Am I a pencil? Wait a minute I'm a transmission" and it eventually finds the speed you were looking for. Those couple of faults I have with the car blend into insignificance when compared with all its positive attributes, so they aren't a dealbreaker for me. The only car I would consider would be a newer Outback with a quieter interior and more safety tech like BSM.
I purchased a pre-owned lease return 2019 Subaru Outback for my wife after she drove a 2019 Toyota RAV4. She stated the Outback felt safer and more planted to the Road. Subaru is like a Japanese Volvo since both Subaru and Volvos are safe cars. However Subaru has AWD and are more reliable. Buying a Subaru is a no brainer after test driving other cars.
Alex, just started watching your content and i have to say, great job sir! Especially with a cell phone! I like that you aren't pushing the dealership specifically (although that is somewhat baked in, we know that..) but you are directing useful Subie content to us just the same. For instance - the engine location where it affects front collision safety. Did not know that.
I do seem to remember a fire fighter client of mine saying that the tops of the "B" pillar are something like 5 layers of overlapping steel and that it is quite the challenge at a crash to roll the roof back. Is that true? Please show us more on the way the frame is done for safety if you can.

I'm not privy to all of the details on the engineering behind the frame but I wouldn't be surprised if it's made with 5 layers. I do know the "B" pillar is one of the strongest parts though. It's designed to stay in place even with hard side impact so I can also see how it would be difficult to cut through.

Yes. Subarus are very safe cars. Main reason I got one after my 2010 Saab 9-3 XWD. The symmetrically AWD system is my #2.
3 Subarus- a 2019 Outback, a 2013 Outback, and a 2019 Impreza Hatchback. The safest, neatest, and best-built cars we have ever had. There is no earthly reason to ever buy a different car. These vehicles are simply the best.

The hook and latch setup in the rear door openings is also in my 2008 Outback. After 160,000km (100,000 miles) the car is still tight despite lots of rough road use. The car does not flex over uneven ground and I wonder if the hook and latch setup contributes to this solidity.

Let’s say that most of car makers just make cars focusing on look or speed, some on durability others focus on luxury but Subaru focus on all of that trying to deliver the best overall cars at the best price and I think we can easily say that with the 2020 models Subaru really reached the apex.
I moved to the US and for the first time in my life I was able to think to buy a fully loaded car with leather seats, premium audio, super safe, fast enough and AWD for less than 50k and I think which there is only one automaker that gives it all… so that’s when I got my Legacy Touring and after one year of ownership this car never stops surprising me.
I survived in my Subaru forester 2021 t boned in drivers door spun into traffic hitting a second time ! I had emergency surgery removing my spleen and ribs cracked but I came home still recovering. I swear by the safety of subaru
Love my Outback . I like that the doors lock into the frame and it’s built on a triangle frame . I had a great test drive and the guy showed me everything , fell in love with it - I love it as much today as the day I bought it ♥️I just wish I found Subaru years ago ♥️♥️♥️I also have to add the Subaru is the first car I did not blow the transmission with in the first 5 yrs 🤦♀️ that is 2 fords Taurus’ and Honda Odyssey. All three purchased new .
On December 28, 2019 I got run off the highway by another while driving my 2018 Legacy. After going off the highway the car jumped a ditch and hit a tree head on at @40 mph. No airbags deployed. My chest was pushed against the steering wheel cracking 3 ribs. When I reported the airbag issue to the Subaru dealer nobody really wanted to talk to me about it.
I have a Subaru Forester 2020 that just crashed on Dec 2, 2021 when we are on our way to Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park. I am not sure what really causes the crash. All I can remember was we are moving at 30MPH and in a split second I heard a loud sound (not sure if the tire exploded or hit something but the road was clear) and I had zero visibility because all the airbags went off. I held tight on the steering wheel until it crashed on the huge pine tree. Luckily we passed all the cliffs before the crash. I got a couple of minor bruises on my right hand and arm possibly because of the airbag. My wife and myself were pulled from the car safe and no injuries. I am going to buy another car once the insurance settled everything but I am kind of reluctant to get another Subaru because of the accident. I am not comfortable with lane centering and lane departure features because of the feeling of someone will immediately hold the steering wheel while you are driving.
Back in the early 2000s i witnessed an accident involving a Forrester that was forced into the median on i44 near Springfield Missouri. The subaru came into the path of two loaded trailer trucks. This was an almost unbelievable terrible looking crash. The subaru was hit head on by first one and then the second truck scattering debris all over the road. I was immediately behind truck 2, and passed an office desk sized piece of steel realizing it was the Forrester. Miraculously the driver had only broken both legs which is bad, but she lived. I don't know how many cars could have been any better. Pretty much convinced me to get a 2010 outback. Now we are in a 2020 outback, and it is an awesome car.

Without even watching any videos about subaru's safety features I can say that in the event of a head on collision the engine is pushed backwards on a decline to avoid the occupants of the vehicle. Unless of course if the impact is at around 180km/h then the vehicle usually explodes on impact...
We own 2 Outbacks, Limited. A '16 and an '18. The only complaints I have is, 1) the noise coming from the engine during acceleration. 2) I hope they have started outfitting Subaru's with a longer life battery. BOTH of ours went out a couple of months prior to the 30 month warranty. BUY yourself a quality battery. Outside of these, which are minor, our Subaru's run like a clock and really feel stable on long roads and most importantly, on winding roads.
They’ve definitely improved the road noise and engine noise over the years. Much quieter than before
My 19outback didn’t come with a roll over warning sticker. I drive it very aggressively on turns and this thing handles pretty damn well for a family car. It’s always planted, and rotates amazingly
My 2010 outback with antiskid and abs disabled is the most fun I have ever had in a car during winter. I see snow, I take my car out for a drive.
Edit : I also drive agressively on turns and the car always stays planted. Drives very well for a car with good ground clearance and that is considered a family car.

@@jamesdarcy3902 My 2010 takes about 1 pint of oil every 3000 miles roughly and has been this way ever since I have it. I have been given a 2013 that looks exactly like my 2010 except it has a blown CVT.. If you do your maintenance (and change your CVT fluid) your car should last a long time. I have the good old manual transmission (6speed) in my 2010 and I will keep it probably until it just gives up. Other cars are nice and all, but my Outback is simple has 6 speeds with full time 50/50 AWD. A subaru is also so simple to work on.. I do all of my work by myself mostly..
@mrweedtouch Subarus will always burn a little bit of oil, due to the boxer engine, but it's negligible, and it doesn't mean that anything is wrong with it. The cylinders are just sideways.
Just noticed their insurance institute rating for every model they make for the last 10 yrs… best pick in every category! No other brand!
also gas door being on passenger side was put there incase you ran out and putting gas on the side of a busy highway or side roads , you dont have to worry about getting clip by cars or trucks passing by..
That's a great point! I never even thought of that.
Interesting point but there should be no reason for running out of gas. Check the gauge, and there is also a low fuel warning light which I think beeps when it comes on.

My lovely UK spec 2005 Legacy has that rear door button hook thing. Now I know what it's for. 17 years old, 188k miles and everything still works. I'm in no hurry to replace it, unless a H6 Legacy Wagon with manual transmission comes along
I love Subaru and own a 2020 Touring XT and a 2022 Touring. Safety on the road with incredible agility and speed. We love the comfort of the touring level. There are two wishes for Subaru that I’ve heard from many owners (1) increase the quality of the front and rear back up cameras (2) offer as an option a built in dash cam front and rear; talk about a safety feature need. It seems they could incorporate a dash cam in the eyesight system. Make it optional.
I once totaled a Hyundai with my Legacy GT. LOL frame is super sturdy! Surprised no further damage than just a dented fender haha

You forgot AVH or Hill Holder Assist. My car once rolled back and i almost got my wife dead who was behind the car. I no longer worry about that ever since i changed to a Subaru with hill holder assist.
I just bought a 94' Subaru and my dad was telling me how safe they are. The power steering on my car isn't as strong as the other cars I've driven which to me makes it easier for me to drive and steer it.

On Friday , December 2nd I was T Boned at an intersection from a driver that was driving at least 50mph on a rainy night road. My '20 Forester took the impact like a champ from the side passenger side. I got out unscathed thankfully.
There are exactly two downsides I know of the Subaru drivetrain layout: it makes changing spark plugs a PITA, and it increases front overhang, thus limiting approach angle offroad. Note that head gasket issues are *not* inherent to a boxer. That's a long since solved problem.

Increased overhang compared to what? A longitudinal based 4x4 architecture is way worse. The length of the boxer 4 is half of an inline 4. In a FWD transverse based Haldex style AWD system, both the engine and transmission are cantilevered over the front axle (the Subaru’s transmission is behind the front axle). So while in theory the front overhang may look longer in a Subaru, in reality the oil pan, cooling system, front bumper, and other components play a larger role with the approach angle than the few inches of engine over the front axle. Oh, and to put the final nail in the coffin, the Forester’s standard approach angle actually higher than any of it’s key competitors (RAV 4, CR-V, Mazda CX-5/CX-50, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, and the Jeep Cherokee). The Bronco Sport bests the Forester here, and has nothing to do with it’s drivetrain layout shared with the Escape.

My 2011 Subaru Impreza saved my life back in January when someone hit me going through a red light. He was in an SUV, the roads were slippery from snow. He clipped me on the front and we both spun around. I walked away without a scratch and so did he.
Eyesight and rear cross traffic alert have saved my rear end many a times. Love my Subie!
Personally if your looking for a reliable car that can off-road and do day to day stuff luxury or not choose a Subaru the started symmetrical all wheel drive comes in handy in the winter I don’t drive I am only 13 years old but my dad owns a 2020 outback and my mom owns a 2018 forester and they are very reliable it really depends on how you treat the car I am not saying that Subaru’s don’t break down every car breaks down but you always want a car that has low downtime and Subaru is the one
