Absolutely! I work in data with a paper planner, paper notebooks and fountain pens, because handwriting helps my brain and I have experienced so many computer crashes in 30 years of working. Cheers!

I agree. I think in a lot of ways we weren’t constantly being stimulated by notifications on phones from things like the news or social media. I wish at times I could downgrade my smartphone, but I unfortunately can’t since I need my smartphone for work.

We need a combination of both. Most things rely on digital these days and its convenient to do things digitally, so have everything digital, but keep a back-up, just in case it goes down. I have paper files in my bedroom. I go to a local pharmacy that has a minimum for using a card, so I use cash when I'm not getting much, so I often have cash. Photo albums have more of a nostalgic feel than scrolling through digital pictures.
A nice balance is definitely valued. Online digital certainly has its uses, but analog backups are definitely needed. I prefer physical photo albums too over digital ones - so much nicer to take your time looking at :) Many thanks!

I write every morning using my much loved fountain pens. It helps with my creativity and I set out my tasks for the day . I love the act of writing. I usually have cash on me at all times. I used to keep a “book of codes” , all my passwords and account number. I need to update it as I rely on my password keeper on app on my phone. Thanks for the nudge to update my analog documentation.

I keep a small notebook of passwords (and account numbers) in the file with my Last Will & Testament...I learned to do this the hard way after cleaning out a close relative's home and trying to sort out what he had on his computer, which was everything! One more comment, I journal and also use a date book. I grew SO tired of keeping a calendar on my phone, and the wall in the kitchen, AND my calendar at work! I simplified when I retired! A paper planner only! 😊 🖊 📃
Great idea, I’ve got to do this. I wouldn’t want my family in their time of grief to have to tell the funeral home to “hold on, we need her right thumb to access her phone.”
I have been using a card filing system for years and years, Barry, which means that all my passwords and contacts are at my fingertips. Journalling is something I can’t live without. I write everything down. And yes, I’m in my 60’s! We have spent the bulk of our lives without technology and have skills that our parents taught us. My parents came from the South of England and came to Australia making us the post war generation. I also have a dumb phone for whenever I may need it, and have a cash stash. 😉🙏📖✝️💟🇦🇺

I believe in having analog backups of what's digital, and digital backups of much of what's analog - and on the digital side, multiple storage devices NOT regularly connected to the online world, so that if there's a hardware crash/internet crash/massive digital virus going around, etc., it would be unlikely that all of my digital copies would be affected. Also it's important to make a distinction between on-site digital storage and cloud storage, as Barry points out.
Very wise approach - it's just finding a balance between the two 'worlds', so that we never get to the point where everything is lost - regardless of whether we lose our analog or digital stuff. Many thanks for sharing.
I do have a notebook too, i write down all important things like bank account details, contact numbers, passwords, pins, to do list, reminders, even recipe ideas. I agree with you, we need to go back to traditional ways

Passwords, account numbers, everyone says to never do that, but if you forget a password, or you are travelling and don't have your account numbers you may have a lot of problems. Keep everything written down like that because you never know. Your hard drive crashes that you have all your login information saved on, and cannot get back into your accounts, you are gonna have a massive headache for weeks or months because you most likely don't remember most of your passwords already, and highly doubt you have your account numbers memorized either. I keep birthdays written down as well, otherwise I will probably forget about them. Write down your prescription medications, how much and how often you take them.
Digital information is so easy to get hold of, in comparison with information written down on paper, filed in a locked cabinet, in a locked room in a locked building. At least if someone is going to steal paper-based information, they have to get off their backsides, get dressed and go and break in somewhere. All your private information in a digital cloud is much easier and cleaner to sell off without you even knowing about it. It's not as if the most recent digital problem was caused by hacking - it was a self inflicted wound! It's highlighted just how many businesses rely on microsoft - they don't even care enough about their businesses and their customers to have their own proprietory systems anymore.

As a member of Gen X, I am so happy and grateful that we lived during a time when everything was still analog and then came of age on the cusp of all of this new technology, and as a result we know how to use both and can appreciate both. There's a running joke out there that if everything did shut down, that Gen X (and anyone older) would be the generation that would survive, be less stressed, and could adapt the quickest, because we knew what life was like before cell phones, computers, social media, etc. We could, in fact, live without it all, if we had to. Gen Z, or Gen Alpha, not so much.

I am Gen Z, and I am loving the analog life. I used to use my phone a lot but now when ever I use my phone I get intimidated by it because I use my notebook, and fountain pen more the my phone. And I love that feeling.
As a West African, I don't trust technology haha And this is coming from a data analyst! Me and mine still write things down, my parents have phone numbers on paper (or in their minds), I still keep a physical diary, and I will always reach for a pen and paper first. I feel like anyone who loves literature and reading is still going to love the traditional pen and paper.

My kids are 11 and 15. They have to make all the cards they want to give to anyone. They actually still make presents and they both journal and prefer pen and paper for it. They are on the internet, there is balance and we chat often about this balance between being in the world and also not. We also have photos, dvds, a walkman with cassettes, and vinyls. And they budget both a card and cash. It seems important to me to not have all your eggs in one basket, but also not in someone else's basket.
This is why I love notebooks with a little folder built in, so I can transfer things like contact info from one to another without having to rewrite it
I had a 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Rousseau, who assigned the class to journal before we started our work each morning. Since then, I have kept journals of my life and poetry and commonplace notebooks. I felt like I was one of the last cell phone adopters, finally getting one in 2009. And got a smart phone in 2015. Even still, Over the years, I saved a lot of things online that I don’t want to lose. Recently, I have slowly started to wean myself from online sources. It is not easy. The convenience is amazing. But, I have found a sort of peace and connection that comes with taking handwritten notes and calling up a friend instead of texting them. It is good for the brain and the soul. I have even been taking less pictures. But, more meaningful ones.

Funny thing is i was just talking to my mom about this the other night, saying how Japan as a country will likely be able to handle these types of things as a society much better than alot of the western countries because they havent fully switched to digital and some restaurants still only accept cash their. Despite Japan being known for its innovations in tech. Alot of people see this as a bad thing but like you said digital crashes are inevitable. Especially with how technology can be messed with due to powerful solar flares. Its not just a possibility, it's an inevitability at this point. We cant escape our sun. And its only a matter of time until we do get a coronal mass ejection that has a much larger impact on earth. There was just some that hit over Australia and caused issues with radios and such. Being prepared is never a bad thing. But over all i agree with you i was born in 1997 and still have cds, dvs, physical boxes to video game and continue to choose to buy hard copies when i can. (Its alot more eco friendly then buying digital due to the storage and how much energy it takes to keep large severs going) i had some people my age make funny of me for my cd collection "like really? Why would you even bother with cds" when there is plenty of practical reasons to do so. I also write and keep a journal and perfer physical copies/traditional methods of keeping important documents or whatever. I love digital but im just as happy writing letters to my sister (which we've been doing for years) wax sealing, crafting etc. Its definitely a hobby for me, but its also a way of life. Sorry for rambling. It's nice to find some common minded folks now and again.
Write down things that your elderly parents tell you, funny stories, events, people, family stuff, childhood memories etc. You won’t regret doing that.
One of the things I love about Japan is their slow uptake of digital records and payments (despite simultaneously being very high tech in other respects). Visiting the doctors and seeing them search through alphabetised files to find my record was oddly reassuring! They’ve moved away from cash in recent years but I do think analog is often the best way, or certainly should never be abandoned. If I was stuck on a deserted island, besides survival basics I couldn’t manage without pens and paper! My son doesn’t hand write with much enthusiasm and it worries me a little as analog records and expression have entirely different effects on our brains. Outside of school there isn’t much need for writing although I will continue to try and encourage it because analog writing has saved me and improved my life so many times. Love everything you are saying on this video and I hope children can find their way to analog despite the inevitable lure, and I am a digital fan so no criticism of it at all like you say!

Aussie here 😊...and new sub. I'm a 70 yr old, who Always uses notebooks, pens and journals. In fact, I make them and sell them, because I have faith in written format. I currently have 5 notebooks/ journals on the go...1 for daily thought and events, one for 'personal ' stuff ( bank details of our family members), phone numbers. Another is my 'inspiration/ ideas' journal, another 3 for recording my journal making info....gosh...more than I thought 😅. Hubby is a ' on-line' bloke...and daily I hear " I'm sure I put that info on my phone...now it's gone". I also keep cash in my journal ! Oh lordy....im not alone...yay.

There are so many benefits to actually writing for your brain and meditation. We do remember things and process things that are totally different than a swipe or text or typing. I agree. I do journal writing daily. Paper and pen won’t fail you in a power outage or digital crash. They are timeless tools. Even though I use technology for my job, I still attend meetings with a notepad in hand and hand write my notes. I still use a paper planner. Writing by hand has positive effects on learning and memory. I remember things better when I write them down instead of storing them digitally. I also make my own notebooks and journals based on what paper I have on hand and books I find when thrifting. In September, I will be launching a series of daily writing prompts on my channel. As an Xennial I have feet in both sides. Tech is nice for some things while others are better analog. I homestead and have made a point of having non-mechanical/electric backups for everything that I can. Same idea.

I am def. gonna get a notebook (and look through your other videos for your favourites) - I have a few, but mainly for note taking at work. I'm Gen X and worked in tech since 87 and I adopted the cloud for most of my documents. Def. gonna invest to keep some things analog and keeping a stash of cash is a good idea in light of what happened in the last few days.

I use a notebook but I also use a small digital voice recorder. It's useful for when I have a thought but can't write it in my notebook immediately. Good video. Cheer's.
Agreeing with this POV. I will say, though, as a person who's been journaling since 7th grade (30 years) it's a lot of paper. I've got many boxes. While I still absolutely value the notebooks I use, I switched to a digital notebook for journaling (Supernote Nomad if anyone's curious). And I'm especially a fan of this move (for myself, ymmv) because I never needed to connect it to the internet to start using it. I can replace every part of it, whenever the battery goes out or the SD card gets filled. But I have unused journals still, because I am that kind of person, so whenever it's not longer an option to use the digital, I'll go back to the analog (but I will be thankful for that digitablet as it's saved some trees).

@@BarryBibleBeliever My favorite journals/notebook are made by Crane. I've normally purchased them from discount family stores that I won't name, but haven't been able to access them for a few years. I've been using instead, little pocket size Spirax Pelican Artline notepads, which I got in a pack of 3 or 4 at the time. I've just filled them up, and in need of more now. Also I tend to prefer mechanical pencils instead of pen, to erase instead of scratching out mistakes. But I use pens and pencil, whatever is on hand. I jot down a lot of scripture verses that I hear and like, from podcasts, and just write down lots of info on many different topics for later reference. My late Dad used to say to us, "If you don't write it down, it didn't happen." He always, always carried a pocket spiral notepad and pen. Like a journalist, but not a journalist. Your video came up on my feed, and I think this was well timed. What happened this past Friday really should be a wake up call to everyone because we never know when the next digital blackout will be and how widespread it will be. I know some people will say," Well, I have a Mac or Linux and I wasn't affected," but that does not mean that it couldn't happen again in the future with either an EMP, solar flare, or a hacker attack. Stuff can and will happen and it's better to be a little paranoid and prepared than not. Definitely has given me some food for thought to implement analog backups to some of the things I have become technologically reliant on.

I sonwosh i could stick to the analog system, i hate having to be mostly online, but every time i try i mess up because i forget where i put my things, forget to bring it with me, forget to write things down or just don't have time. I havent given up yet, but with ADHD and a really hectic family and house I have to use onlibe a while longer. Every technology, even what we consider analog today, has an apocalyptic crash state. The number of photo albums and notebooks that perished in wildfires went untold. It's important to know how to do things a few different ways, but the online world also has its place. There's no security in a journal if anyone else is looking for it, same as online. There's no time to get all "mindful" when your boss is breathing down your neck whether you're thinking with a keyboard under your fingers or a pen in your hand. You've already got your life sorted if you have the time to doodle around with notebooks. The journal didn't make you free, your freedom make your able to journal.
We’ve made it that way. Life was slower before computers. Now the expectations are higher. Same with remote work; before, you had a 9-5; now you can’t clock out ever again because they just contact you at any time or day.
People use online as an excuse to be able to access stuff anywhere....well you can pack your journal with you too, and access it anywhere as well and you don't have to turn anything on in order to use it LOL. I do both, I use Google Calendar, and I use a paper calendar. Figure if I forget about something I'll either see it in my paper calendar or the Google Calendar might remind me with a message LOL. I like having Google Calendar, as I can see it on my phone or computer at home or at work....but I always have the paper backup just in case....I've had issues where a phone has failed, or computer has crashed, and without the paper calendar I wouldn't have known most of what my tasks were for the day or week LOL.
Imagine what we've learned from Shakespeare, DiVinci, Newton...bc of old school 😊 I do bullet journal, brain dump, daily task and create in a TN. YES! Ticking them done, I feel so accomplished. Will do the cash in a pocket though, since it is probably what I'd grab in a hurry out the door.

This wasn't Microsoft's fault though, the systems that were effected were effected by an update from a cloud security programn. But yeah, I do agree to put everything on paper and to have cash on hand. Journaling is good for the soul and if you don't know what to write, you could always start to draw.
true, I'm also pro less computerization (grew up with computers though), but digital is best used when organizing documents is important, you can still access digital notes/documents saved on flash drive...w/ Linux. Plus, if your passwords on paper get lost or stilen..Ouch. With digital you can encrypt. I'm Gen X

Sure, loads of people use a journal to keep important info accessible, but it's not Noah's ark. If the whole country loses access to the internet, having your account numbers and favorite colours in a moleskine won't help. Write down whatever you want, but if you're doing it as preparation for disaster, think about the utility of the info in a crashing economy/society.
Agree, however, a potential bank (or similar) cyber attack destroying all records of people's accounts and any proof of money they had in them, calls for a wise decision to have printed or written proof of the existence of your account and the balance you had in it, so that 'they' don't have any excuses to doubt that you ever had any account at all, and don't give you what is rightfully yours. It was a poorly managed antivirus update from a third party software company, not technically Microsoft’s fault. The CEO sent the previous company he worked for broke as well.
Yes analog and digitally offline is the way. Also stay away from any closed source ecosystems. I am a big fan of open source stuff bc chances are high that they still exist for a long time. You might want to look into a way to sync data between devices or backup your stuff, for example with a local NAT or something but with that you should be fine and not dependent on any company.

I think its kind of funny that "Analog" is becoming a fad. It was actually how I lived most of my life as the internet as a commercial thing didn't really start to become a thing until I was a teenager. So I actually lived it. It wasn't that great either. It was just... life...
People just need to implement redundancy into their digital systems. Analog is fine, but their are digital systems that have an "analog" disconnected spirit.
Just using analog will not be sufficient to have accurate information unless you are an excellent artist.The problem with so-called "being happier" before the digital age was there was and still is a lot of horrible things going on in the world and a lot of he said,she said,and covering up.We were just in a rose glasses kind of world and the the social media exposed the world for what it was and it can be changed on a worldwide scale.
I will agree with your statement since we did not hear about a lot of the horrible stuff going on in the world because things were filtered down to whatever news shows or the newspaper's considered to be news worthy. Now we're able to know of a butterfly fluttering halfway around the world in an instant because of someone's social media post. I do agree though that social media has lifted the veil for a lot of people as far as thinking that most people are good when there are a lot who are not when they have a platform to voice their views and have people who agree with those views. As they say, ignorance was bliss back then and I understand why people want to go back to that state. You didn't know the things you didn't want to know about your fellow man since they mostly kept that to themselves because they knew it was wrong to voice those things in polite company. At the same time, I think the world in a lot of ways has become too addicted to things like technology and social media and it would not be a bad idea for people to discomnect from it for a few hours a day or even a full day if possible and realize that there is an entire world to be physically present in.

I agree. I think in a lot of ways we weren’t constantly being stimulated by notifications on phones from things like the news or social media.
I wish at times I could downgrade my smartphone, but I unfortunately can’t since I need my smartphone for work.

We need a combination of both. Most things rely on digital these days and its convenient to do things digitally, so have everything digital, but keep a back-up, just in case it goes down. I have paper files in my bedroom. I go to a local pharmacy that has a minimum for using a card, so I use cash when I'm not getting much, so I often have cash. Photo albums have more of a nostalgic feel than scrolling through digital pictures.
A nice balance is definitely valued. Online digital certainly has its uses, but analog backups are definitely needed. I prefer physical photo albums too over digital ones - so much nicer to take your time looking at :) Many thanks!

I write every morning using my much loved fountain pens. It helps with my creativity and I set out my tasks for the day . I love the act of writing. I usually have cash on me at all times. I used to keep a “book of codes” , all my passwords and account number. I need to update it as I rely on my password keeper on app on my phone. Thanks for the nudge to update my analog documentation.

I keep a small notebook of passwords (and account numbers) in the file with my Last Will & Testament...I learned to do this the hard way after cleaning out a close relative's home and trying to sort out what he had on his computer, which was everything! One more comment, I journal and also use a date book. I grew SO tired of keeping a calendar on my phone, and the wall in the kitchen, AND my calendar at work! I simplified when I retired! A paper planner only! 😊 🖊 📃

I have been using a card filing system for years and years, Barry, which means that all my passwords and contacts are at my fingertips. Journalling is something I can’t live without. I write everything down. And yes, I’m in my 60’s! We have spent the bulk of our lives without technology and have skills that our parents taught us. My parents came from the South of England and came to Australia making us the post war generation. I also have a dumb phone for whenever I may need it, and have a cash stash. 😉🙏📖✝️💟🇦🇺

This afternoon I decided to start writing in a small notebook I had laying around. I can’t believe it’s been over 15 years since the last time I sat down and just wrote down my thoughts. I really needed that it felt good to sit on the edge of my hammock and our cat at my feet and just write my thoughts down. I’m so glad I stumbled onto your videos!

I believe in having analog backups of what's digital, and digital backups of much of what's analog - and on the digital side, multiple storage devices NOT regularly connected to the online world, so that if there's a hardware crash/internet crash/massive digital virus going around, etc., it would be unlikely that all of my digital copies would be affected. Also it's important to make a distinction between on-site digital storage and cloud storage, as Barry points out.
Very wise approach - it's just finding a balance between the two 'worlds', so that we never get to the point where everything is lost - regardless of whether we lose our analog or digital stuff. Many thanks for sharing.
I do have a notebook too, i write down all important things like bank account details, contact numbers, passwords, pins, to do list, reminders, even recipe ideas. I agree with you, we need to go back to traditional ways

I have phone numbers in my Travelers Passport Notebook. What other things would you suggest writing down and keeping with you?
Passwords, account numbers, everyone says to never do that, but if you forget a password, or you are travelling and don't have your account numbers you may have a lot of problems. Keep everything written down like that because you never know. Your hard drive crashes that you have all your login information saved on, and cannot get back into your accounts, you are gonna have a massive headache for weeks or months because you most likely don't remember most of your passwords already, and highly doubt you have your account numbers memorized either.
I keep birthdays written down as well, otherwise I will probably forget about them.
Write down your prescription medications, how much and how often you take them.

Digital information is so easy to get hold of, in comparison with information written down on paper, filed in a locked cabinet, in a locked room in a locked building. At least if someone is going to steal paper-based information, they have to get off their backsides, get dressed and go and break in somewhere. All your private information in a digital cloud is much easier and cleaner to sell off without you even knowing about it. It's not as if the most recent digital problem was caused by hacking - it was a self inflicted wound! It's highlighted just how many businesses rely on microsoft - they don't even care enough about their businesses and their customers to have their own proprietory systems anymore.

As a member of Gen X, I am so happy and grateful that we lived during a time when everything was still analog and then came of age on the cusp of all of this new technology, and as a result we know how to use both and can appreciate both. There's a running joke out there that if everything did shut down, that Gen X (and anyone older) would be the generation that would survive, be less stressed, and could adapt the quickest, because we knew what life was like before cell phones, computers, social media, etc. We could, in fact, live without it all, if we had to. Gen Z, or Gen Alpha, not so much.

I am Gen Z, and I am loving the analog life. I used to use my phone a lot but now when ever I use my phone I get intimidated by it because I use my notebook, and fountain pen more the my phone. And I love that feeling.

As a West African, I don't trust technology haha And this is coming from a data analyst! Me and mine still write things down, my parents have phone numbers on paper (or in their minds), I still keep a physical diary, and I will always reach for a pen and paper first. I feel like anyone who loves literature and reading is still going to love the traditional pen and paper.

My kids are 11 and 15. They have to make all the cards they want to give to anyone. They actually still make presents and they both journal and prefer pen and paper for it. They are on the internet, there is balance and we chat often about this balance between being in the world and also not. We also have photos, dvds, a walkman with cassettes, and vinyls. And they budget both a card and cash. It seems important to me to not have all your eggs in one basket, but also not in someone else's basket.

I had a 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Rousseau, who assigned the class to journal before we started our work each morning. Since then, I have kept journals of my life and poetry and commonplace notebooks. I felt like I was one of the last cell phone adopters, finally getting one in 2009. And got a smart phone in 2015. Even still, Over the years, I saved a lot of things online that I don’t want to lose. Recently, I have slowly started to wean myself from online sources. It is not easy. The convenience is amazing. But, I have found a sort of peace and connection that comes with taking handwritten notes and calling up a friend instead of texting them. It is good for the brain and the soul. I have even been taking less pictures. But, more meaningful ones.

Funny thing is i was just talking to my mom about this the other night, saying how Japan as a country will likely be able to handle these types of things as a society much better than alot of the western countries because they havent fully switched to digital and some restaurants still only accept cash their. Despite Japan being known for its innovations in tech. Alot of people see this as a bad thing but like you said digital crashes are inevitable.
Especially with how technology can be messed with due to powerful solar flares. Its not just a possibility, it's an inevitability at this point. We cant escape our sun. And its only a matter of time until we do get a coronal mass ejection that has a much larger impact on earth. There was just some that hit over Australia and caused issues with radios and such. Being prepared is never a bad thing.
But over all i agree with you i was born in 1997 and still have cds, dvs, physical boxes to video game and continue to choose to buy hard copies when i can. (Its alot more eco friendly then buying digital due to the storage and how much energy it takes to keep large severs going) i had some people my age make funny of me for my cd collection "like really? Why would you even bother with cds" when there is plenty of practical reasons to do so. I also write and keep a journal and perfer physical copies/traditional methods of keeping important documents or whatever. I love digital but im just as happy writing letters to my sister (which we've been doing for years) wax sealing, crafting etc. Its definitely a hobby for me, but its also a way of life.
Sorry for rambling. It's nice to find some common minded folks now and again.

Write down things that your elderly parents tell you, funny stories, events, people, family stuff, childhood memories etc. You won’t regret doing that.
One of the things I love about Japan is their slow uptake of digital records and payments (despite simultaneously being very high tech in other respects). Visiting the doctors and seeing them search through alphabetised files to find my record was oddly reassuring! They’ve moved away from cash in recent years but I do think analog is often the best way, or certainly should never be abandoned. If I was stuck on a deserted island, besides survival basics I couldn’t manage without pens and paper! My son doesn’t hand write with much enthusiasm and it worries me a little as analog records and expression have entirely different effects on our brains. Outside of school there isn’t much need for writing although I will continue to try and encourage it because analog writing has saved me and improved my life so many times. Love everything you are saying on this video and I hope children can find their way to analog despite the inevitable lure, and I am a digital fan so no criticism of it at all like you say!

I'm a 70 yr old, who Always uses notebooks, pens and journals.
In fact, I make them and sell them, because I have faith in written format.
I currently have 5 notebooks/ journals on the go...1 for daily thought and events, one for 'personal ' stuff ( bank details of our family members), phone numbers.
Another is my 'inspiration/ ideas' journal, another 3 for recording my journal making info....gosh...more than I thought 😅.
Hubby is a ' on-line' bloke...and daily I hear " I'm sure I put that info on my phone...now it's gone".
I also keep cash in my journal !

There are so many benefits to actually writing for your brain and meditation. We do remember things and process things that are totally different than a swipe or text or typing. It makes you slow down. Love that you express a need for control and creativity. Clarity comes from thought and time. Faster is not always better. Thanks for this episode!

I agree. I do journal writing daily. Paper and pen won’t fail you in a power outage or digital crash. They are timeless tools. Even though I use technology for my job, I still attend meetings with a notepad in hand and hand write my notes. I still use a paper planner. Writing by hand has positive effects on learning and memory. I remember things better when I write them down instead of storing them digitally. I also make my own notebooks and journals based on what paper I have on hand and books I find when thrifting. In September, I will be launching a series of daily writing prompts on my channel. I have a fun, eclectic approach to my daily journal writing that I will share soon. Thank you for posting this video. Your points are valid.

As an Xennial I have feet in both sides. Tech is nice for some things while others are better analog. I homestead and have made a point of having non-mechanical/electric backups for everything that I can. Same idea.

How topical, and this video came up at exactly the right time. I am def. gonna get a notebook (and look through your other videos for your favourites) - I have a few, but mainly for note taking at work. I'm Gen X and worked in tech since 87 and I adopted the cloud for most of my documents. Def. gonna invest to keep some things analog and keeping a stash of cash is a good idea in light of what happened in the last few days.

Agreeing with this POV. I will say, though, as a person who's been journaling since 7th grade (30 years) it's a lot of paper. I've got many boxes. While I still absolutely value the notebooks I use, I switched to a digital notebook for journaling (Supernote Nomad if anyone's curious). And I'm especially a fan of this move (for myself, ymmv) because I never needed to connect it to the internet to start using it. I can replace every part of it, whenever the battery goes out or the SD card gets filled.
But I have unused journals still, because I am that kind of person, so whenever it's not longer an option to use the digital, I'll go back to the analog (but I will be thankful for that digitablet as it's saved some trees).

I just came across this video, and agree 100%. I still use pocket notebooks and pencil or pen, myself, as well as my phone, but my phone has been letting me down, and my paper and handwriting don't let me down. I try to include the date whenever I write anything, because time goes so fast, it's easy to lose track of when I wrote down my thoughts.

@@BarryBibleBeliever My favorite journals/notebook are made by Crane. I've normally purchased them from discount family stores that I won't name, but haven't been able to access them for a few years. I've been using instead, little pocket size Spirax Pelican Artline notepads, which I got in a pack of 3 or 4 at the time. I've just filled them up, and in need of more now. Also I tend to prefer mechanical pencils instead of pen, to erase instead of scratching out mistakes. But I use pens and pencil, whatever is on hand. I jot down a lot of scripture verses that I hear and like, from podcasts, and just write down lots of info on many different topics for later reference. My late Dad used to say to us, "If you don't write it down, it didn't happen." He always, always carried a pocket spiral notepad and pen. Like a journalist, but not a journalist.

Your video came up on my feed, and I think this was well timed.
What happened this past Friday really should be a wake up call to everyone because we never know when the next digital blackout will be and how widespread it will be.
I know some people will say," Well, I have a Mac or Linux and I wasn't affected," but that does not mean that it couldn't happen again in the future with either an EMP, solar flare, or a hacker attack. Stuff can and will happen and it's better to be a little paranoid and prepared than not.
Definitely has given me some food for thought to implement analog backups to some of the things I have become technologically reliant on.

I sonwosh i could stick to the analog system, i hate having to be mostly online, but every time i try i mess up because i forget where i put my things, forget to bring it with me, forget to write things down or just don't have time. I am undecided if I should get a camel TN, as I didn’t like the felt-like texture of a brand new camel TN.
You're very welcome! It is indeed the Camel one. I've had it for about one year now and is looking a nice, used condition now :) It does have that feel you mention; very different to the Olive one that is very smooth.

Every technology, even what we consider analog today, has an apocalyptic crash state. The number of photo albums and notebooks that perished in wildfires went untold. It's important to know how to do things a few different ways, but the online world also has its place. There's no security in a journal if anyone else is looking for it, same as online. There's no time to get all "mindful" when your boss is breathing down your neck whether you're thinking with a keyboard under your fingers or a pen in your hand. You've already got your life sorted if you have the time to doodle around with notebooks. The journal didn't make you free, your freedom make your able to journal.

We’ve made it that way. Life was slower before computers. Now the expectations are higher. Same with remote work; before, you had a 9-5; now you can’t clock out ever again because they just contact you at any time or day.

People use online as an excuse to be able to access stuff anywhere....well you can pack your journal with you too, and access it anywhere as well and you don't have to turn anything on in order to use it LOL.
I do both, I use Google Calendar, and I use a paper calendar. Figure if I forget about something I'll either see it in my paper calendar or the Google Calendar might remind me with a message LOL.
I like having Google Calendar, as I can see it on my phone or computer at home or at work....but I always have the paper backup just in case....I've had issues where a phone has failed, or computer has crashed, and without the paper calendar I wouldn't have known most of what my tasks were for the day or week LOL.

This wasn't Microsoft's fault though, the systems that were effected were effected by an update from a cloud security programn. But yeah, I do agree to put everything on paper and to have cash on hand. Journaling is good for the soul and if you don't know what to write, you could always start to draw.

true, I'm also pro less computerization (grew up with computers though), but digital is best used when organizing documents is important, you can still access digital notes/documents saved on flash drive...w/ Linux. Plus, if your passwords on paper get lost or stilen..Ouch. With digital you can encrypt. I'm Gen X

Sure, loads of people use a journal to keep important info accessible, but it's not Noah's ark. If the whole country loses access to the internet, having your account numbers and favorite colours in a moleskine won't help.
Write down whatever you want, but if you're doing it as preparation for disaster, think about the utility of the info in a crashing economy/society.
Agree, however, a potential bank (or similar) cyber attack destroying all records of people's accounts and any proof of money they had in them, calls for a wise decision to have printed or written proof of the existence of your account and the balance you had in it, so that 'they' don't have any excuses to doubt that you ever had any account at all, and don't give you what is rightfully yours. It was a poorly managed antivirus update from a third party software company, not technically Microsoft’s fault. The CEO sent the previous company he worked for broke as well.
And the number rule is that cloud storage isn’t a backup.
Yes analog and digitally offline is the way. Also stay away from any closed source ecosystems. I am a big fan of open source stuff bc chances are high that they still exist for a long time. You might want to look into a way to sync data between devices or backup your stuff, for example with a local NAT or something but with that you should be fine and not dependent on any company.

@@BarryBibleBeliever that's right!! I couldn't remember what it was called! He had to teach me so much before I even understood what happened! He had SO MANY opinions about what went wrong. The staggered release was the one that stuck with me... Such a wild story.

I think its kind of funny that "Analog" is becoming a fad. It was actually how I lived most of my life as the internet as a commercial thing didn't really start to become a thing until I was a teenager. So I actually lived it. It wasn't that great either. It was just... life...
People just need to implement redundancy into their digital systems. Analog is fine, but their are digital systems that have an "analog" disconnected spirit.

Just using analog will not be sufficient to have accurate information unless you are an excellent artist.The problem with so-called "being happier" before the digital age was there was and still is a lot of horrible things going on in the world and a lot of he said,she said,and covering up.We were just in a rose glasses kind of world and the the social media exposed the world for what it was and it can be changed on a worldwide scale.
On the other hand, lies and propaganda can spread faster on a worldwide scale.
I will agree with your statement since we did not hear about a lot of the horrible stuff going on in the world because things were filtered down to whatever news shows or the newspaper's considered to be news worthy.
Now we're able to know of a butterfly fluttering halfway around the world in an instant because of someone's social media post.
I do agree though that social media has lifted the veil for a lot of people as far as thinking that most people are good when there are a lot who are not when they have a platform to voice their views and have people who agree with those views.
As they say, ignorance was bliss back then and I understand why people want to go back to that state. You didn't know the things you didn't want to know about your fellow man since they mostly kept that to themselves because they knew it was wrong to voice those things in polite company.
At the same time, I think the world in a lot of ways has become too addicted to things like technology and social media and it would not be a bad idea for people to discomnect from it for a few hours a day or even a full day if possible and realize that there is an entire world to be physically present in.
