WHAT A PENCIL SURPRISE! - Another Mini Analog Haul From Nero's Notes
#analog #analogue #notebooks #pencil
I couldn't resist it. I just had to buy some more pencils. I blame some of the followers and commenters on this channel - you know who you are!! :))
One of my favourite online shops is Nero's Notes, where I've ordered a number of wonderful items from them over the years. But this week, whilst ordering a few singles to try, I decided to also try out their Discover Graphite option where you spend £10 for a surprise collection of pencils - you have no idea what you're going to receive! Great fun!!
In this video, I share with you the package received (once again, in rapid delivery time and with excellent, caring customer service), and of course, the pencils contained within.
Thanks for watching!
P.S. Nero's Notes did NOT sponsor me or request me to record this video! It's something I've been meaning to do myself for a while now.

YOUR ANALOG INSIGHTS WANTED | Be Part Of October's Compilation Video
In grade school, I would pull apart pens and mechanical pencils to try and create new ones. My teacher's never said anything about it but a select few of my classmates teased me by asking if I was making bombs.
As someone who works in the tech world, I can say that we really should not rely on AI for everything. There is a joke amongst those who work in IT or tech in general that goes like this: Tech enthusiasts: My entire house is filled with smart technology. Tech workers: The only piece of technology in my house is my printer and I keep a gun next to it so I can shoot it if it makes a sounds I don’t recognize. It is a cute little joke, but it is very true because a lot of us who work in tech recognize that having everything smart or reliant on AI technology is just a bad idea. People don’t realize a lot of things about AI or smart technology such as: 1. By using the technology, you are giving your voice and data to the company that hosts that technology to help train their machine learning software for their models. You have no idea or any control how they store your data, how secure that data is, and how they use it for other purposes down the road. 2. Programs are only as good as the programmer behind the software and their inherited biases. Examples of these recently are some of the disastrous AI answers from Google as well as how voice technology has been trained on men’s voices more than women’s voices. 3. Internet of Things aka IoT is pretty scary since things like Alexa or other “smart” objects like fridges and stuff like that are always transmitting data on how you use those tools. They’re also a BIG security risk since hackers can exploit these things to get into your home network. Look into how hackers have exploited baby monitors if you want some scary stuff. Thanks Barry for putting the word out there about how we should think about our reliance on AI. Hopefully this will reach more people.
Mystery boxes are the best 🎉
I rather look threatening than bottle up everything and anything up again, journaling is super fun and gives more weight off my back and shoulders I'm never going back to the way it was that feeling of feeling like you don't have anyone to turn to is outdated. Journal your hearts out whether your writing just a "hey I felt happy today, diary" it's a leg up to pushing those feelings and thoughts out in a heathy way
Thank you so much, I'm just starting to journal and it is so helpful to me. ❤
@dorothyjohnson6743 right?! waaay before I talked to a professional, I would journal so much and even though no one knew anything I felt weightless after writing
Physical media (any form: DVD, CD, notebooks, notecards, mailed letters [if not intercepted], books, etc) are always a threat. They are permanent records that cannot be changed digitally. And like others have said here, "see something say something" policies of governments have created nanny states of anything not digitally consumed is a "threat".
Nice to see some pencils I know make an appearance here. I live in New York and am very familiar, almost too familiar, with Musgrave. I love this company and then have done so much good for the analog community in the past few years, lots of great options for those who like graphite. I hope they will be in operation for many years to come, I would love to visit them one day. The Tennessee Reds are some of my favorites but I think I like the round version even better, I find them more comfortable. Also, regarding the Japanese pencil, you cannot go wrong with any pencil from Japan, also some of my favorites. The only thing better than a Japanese pencil is a vintage Japanese pencil, but beware of that rabbit hole as it is wide and deep. :) I like Nero’s Notes and used to be a regular listener to the 1857 podcast. I also miss TJ Cosgrove’s channel, he really had a way of creating good content. You could tell it took a lot of effort. Enjoy your new pencils Barry!
It's not the notebooks. It's the UK government. They went criminally insane a long time ago.
A cheap item you do use is more valuable than an expensive item you don't use.
It's not just notebooks that rile people in public either. The simple act of NOT using a cellphone and looking around at your surroundings and those around you-actually being present where you are-is enough to cause aggressive behavior in those around you. They think you are up to something because you aren't sucked into a phone. They also glare when you read books in public. Especially if you have a book cover on the book so they can't know what it is you're reading. Paranoia is a heckofa drug
I've always used notebooks and pens, last decade only more than before. Part because I had to for my job, plotting a note down while on the phone, is much easier and quicker than using any electrical device. Mostly outside, year round in all weather types, but also indoors or by example in a train. I can't remember someone looking at me funny for it, or I just don't give a shi*t. When using a nice fountain pen, sometimes I get a compliment about it, which can spark a nice conversation.
The only thing I'm picky about is the ballpoint pen: Bic; black ink; fine point, yellow/orange barrel if you please. There's a strong element of self-branding about these discussions, especially regarding fountain pens, pocket knives and watches, which drives dissatisfaction, the pursuit of an illusory end game and over-consumption. Pretty insidious if you ask me.
Obviously you're getting ideas above your station.
These are wonderful! I don't know much about the differences in pencils; which are best for writing as opposed to sketching. But I may have to do some research and get me some. Thanks for sharing!
Definitely worth an investigation :)
The U.K parliamentary system has tyrannically tendencies. The Americans had the right idea to revolt and make a better system. Canada and Australia, with this system too, are also suffering under curtailing of rights as people on the far-left take over the democracy.
Fun fact, it’s the right wing that takes away peoples rights and seeks to install dictatorships / monarchies. Just watch America in the next few months and years, if they last years.
Watch SNL make a skit about using notebooks 📓 in public and everyone going this and or that! Random people coming up expressing their opinions 😂 or maybe 🤔 I just find this great I really love the traditional way notice not old fashioned that I guess was always the trend setter! Haha 😂❤
This is important. I have two significant examples. Years ago I had a large and notoriously litigious employer that loved to sue their employees after leaving the company. In this case, they tried to claim an “invention” a software product that I developed saying that I developed or stole it from them. My notebook with detailed notes of my ideas, drawing, requirements, and testing of my software with dates forced them to drop the lawsuit. More recently, a mortgage company tried to force me to pay an additional payment after I paid the entire loan off. Again, my notebook and several emails that I retained quick proved and resolved my case. Journals are powerful tools and legal documentation. Consistent analog note takers for the win!
Your mum is a sweet wee soul. Every blessing to you both!
Ah, thank you so much! :)
What a coincidence. Just started a to-do list this week in my good old bullet journal, decided against an electronic version. 😅
Hi Barry. Just subbed to your channel. Love this video. I'm in the UK and I've not heard of this company before so I'm going to place an order for some pencils today. Hope you have a great weekend.
Hello Steve, thank you so much for commenting and indeed for subscribing too :) Hope you enjoy whatever wonderful pencil treats take your fancy :)
@barrysanaloginsights thanks Barry. I ordered the £10 bundle so looking forward to seeing what they send. May also subscribe to one of their quarterly subscriptions to. Take care.
@analogliferules Ah nice!! Let me know what you get :))

@@PunkDogCreations how about no. Idc I lived under russian comunist and that was enough to ask why oh why God so you are dealing with a real lost child. So, get out and don't try to impose anything to me.
My personal experience bears this out. I moved to a new community this summer and enjoyed sitting on my front porch journaling every morning while I drank my coffee. One of my neighbors told me he thought I was writing things down about him and the other neighbors. I laughed it off, but he was seriously uncomfortable about seeing me write in a notebook every morning...
Wonderful video, Barry! Lovely pencils to use and play around with. Here in Peru, the common ones are the #HB and the #2B for writing and all the HBs and Bs for drawing. I wonder about Nero´s Notes 2.5. Is it better for writing and taking notes? My preferred ones are the Wikings! Enjoy!
Thank you so much! Delighted you enjoyed the video :)
Social media def made things worse. But things weren't great two decades ago either, and that was before Social Media took over. Edit: But I will say, you are not wrong about what you are saying. You have to be in quiet of your head doing nothing, in the now, not stuck in a phone or computer, to hear yourself and and hear deity.
The best thing about those voice recorders is that you know your notes aren't being used to train a world-destroying AI! The 3G service is officially dead and gone here in the States I believe. I miss the old Commodore MM3M calculator my dad gave me back in the '70's. Your tools are as you say, brilliant. I'll be shamelessly acquiring and using the same or similar. Thank you for the inspiration!
Thank you so much - I hope you acquire some brilliant tools :)
So glad you're able to obtain some of Musgrave's fine pencil offerings! I absolutely love the Tennessee Reds, and many others of their cedar pencils. And I still love watching old Wood & Graphite videos as well; brilliant stuff.
Thanks Duffy! The Red I have is fantastic - was using it last night; beautiful!
Hello, Barry, pardon my non-native English. Have you ever encountered a person with a hoarding problem? A condition when people collect so much stuff in the house that there is barely space left for them to live. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks for great videos.
Hello G K - your English is splendid! :) Many thanks for your question. Simple answer is yes I have, many times. I still know some people today. I used to have a lot of stuff myself 20 or so years ago, but have really cut down and embraced a more minimalist lifestyle, and am much happier for it. I truly believe (objectively) that a person is much more happier when they learn to live with less stuff. Hope that helps in some way. Thanks again!
I started using a franklin covey binder. honestly you'd probably be better of making your own system than relying on theirs but it can at leas tget someone started. only electronic device i store information is is a old palm pilot that is black and white and doest go online. but the notebook gives it a good run for it's money. modern smartphoneslarent just bad for privacy but also awful to use. if you wanna jot something down chances are you'll forget it before you get the phone open. not so with paper and pen.
Ahh, the Palm Pilot! A fantastic device - I had many variations years ago. For me, the OS on that (and the Psion devices), can't be beat. Many thanks.
Excellent teaching. Bless you. My pastor used to call it the "Book of Activities."
Thank you Linda!
Thanks!
Ah Linda, this is very kind of you - thank you so much for this blessing. Many blessings to you!
It’s delightful watching someone get so excited about these lovely tools. I’ve never got ‘into’ standard pencils - too wedded to my fountain pens and mechanical pencils, but it’s fun to see you excited 😊
Thanks Helen :)
Do you think some of the pencils in the mystery pack are slightly used? They are sharpened.
They all looked new to me. Some pencils are factory sharpened.
I use notebooks and notepads plenty, buuut mostly at home or at work. Never would have thought it would spur suspicion. What odd times we find ourselves in.
Enjoy your thoughts and ideas on using analog tools Barry, and always look forward to your videos.. There is no doubt that writing things down is more powerful than typing the same things into your computer - is that because I write words but I type individual letters? My one and done carry is a hard clear plastic case with clickable lid that has room for 4 pens/pencils and an eraser. My items aren't expensive: - - Uniball eye micro - my regular rollerball, a fine writer as nearly all my writing is in A5 or smaller, and I normally carry a Field Notes size notebook or an 11.5 x 18cm Moleskine if I intend to do more writing/note taking.. - A rotring Tikky 0.5mm with B lead. Not expensive, but gets more use than more expensive pencils - because of the rubber grip which I like. - A Stabilo 0.7mm Red Pen for contrast notes - A Thin BIC Yellow Marking pen for highlighting - A small chunk of a Staedtler eraser.
Many thanks for your kind words; delighted you enjoy the videos :) Thank you for sharing your excellent setup!
3 minutes in the video and already have something to say! 1. Oh I WISH i could get my hands on such “mysterious pack” of different pencils 😍 2. Yeah, Wood&Graphite… I’m still subscribed and watch hois vids time to time!
It was so exciting opening it up - I'd waited a while to get a pack, but won't wait so long next time. I've sharpened them now and have written with them - they are great!
Hi, Barry! I've really enjoyed the video, and now I'm curious... is there really a big diference between pencils? I mean for writing or sketching. How do you know a pencil is better than another? Thanks a lot!
Hello! Thanks for your comment and question - glad you enjoyed the video :) To answer your question - absolutely yes! There is indeed a difference between pencils; and sometimes, it can be a big difference. I will be recording a more detailed pencil video shortly, showing my favourites and why, and I will address this question. Thanks again!
@@barrysanaloginsights great idea!

npc’s will be npc’s. New study says only 10-15% of people are actually self aware, and 95% think they are.
This statistic made me chuckle. I wonder if I’m one of them myself??
This likely stems from research by organizational psychologist Dr. Tasha Eurich, who has extensively studied self-awareness. Her findings indicate that while approximately 95% of people believe they are self-aware, only about 10-15% actually meet the criteria for true self-awareness. To meet her criteria for self-awareness, you must: Consistently reflect on your values, emotions, and behaviors. Actively seek and act on honest feedback from others. Bridge the gap between internal understanding and external perception.
It made me smile when you pulled out the Tennessee Red, Barry, because I live in Tennessee, and the Musgrave Pencil Company is only about 2 hours from where I live. So nice to see that beautiful Musgrave pencils have made it across the pond! 🙂
Ah wow! They are superb pencils, and this Red is beautiful; just sharpened it, and the writing experience is a real pleasure. Glad they are this side of the pond too :)
I still watch wood & graphite. Wish T J would come back. Good choice on the Tenn red and forest choice. Each time you shaken the red you get a wonderful cedar rush. Really enjoying your channel.
It would be splendid if he came back; really enjoyed his content and videography. Delighted you are enjoying the channel; thanks so much! :)
