Restomodding a 1978 GMC RV Ep.27 - Rear Suspension + Alignment

  • Is it strange that the first vehicle I have ever aligned is a 12,000lb behemoth, that is as old as I am, and came with the very first IFS front end that ever went into production in Detroit? At any rate I got the job done and also rebuilt the rear suspension while I was at it. It now drives straight down the road with all new suspension front and back. Hopefully this gets me 2200 miles across the country without any issues.

So cool to see you working with your son. Kids learn so much by watching us! My hubby always talks about how his dad never taught him anything or spent any time with him. He was military and hunted & fished and wasn't home a lot. His dad could fix anything, make anything or grow anything he put his mind to. My hubby can do nothing! He makes good coffee. LOL That's his limit. His dad took him fishing once, told him to sit on a log and not say a word. He would scare the fish away. That was the most boring day of his life and he speaks of it often!!! HUGS~Donna

Enjoy the videos and hearing you think through each challenge is very interesting, also really like seeing your son helping you out, great stuff.
I think when considering pricing there are a few other things to keep in mind. These companies do all the homework to source parts and inventory on items that are often no longer available from the original OEM, like your airbags as one example.
For those either unwilling, lack the time or talent to search it from themselves, then they are paying a convenance fee for a “one stop” environment. Using a company’s website with pricing to shame them is overstepping in my mind because you are not required to purchase anything from them.
Looking forward to your next video and good luck with your move.

@7:00..Instead of removing wheel and tweaking your back, just jack up enough so rear wheels are off the ground-grab either wheel at 6 and 12 o'clock and feel for play in the bogey pins/bushings-then try at 3 and 9 o'clock. If you can feel play, the bushings are worn-thats a $2,000 - $3,000 repair.

I'm curious as to why you didn't have the steering wheel held to a level crossbar position as this is, usually, where it guarantees that the pitman arm/steering gearbox, is centered so that you have even turning in both directions. It also keeps your turn signal canceling properly. There's also a mark on the steering shaft under the horn button assembly that should be aligned to a true vertical orientation when doing an alignment. People have been known to remove the steering wheel and reposition it to "correct" for an improper alignment. Most steering will self-center after a turn. The only exception to this is that older vehicles were aligned to barely pull to the right in even of driver removing hands from the steering wheel in the event of a health condition(unconscious)so the the vehicle would exit the roadway rather than cross the center line and causing multiple Injuries/fatalities. Other than that, your video was excellent and very informative, and you did a great job for it having been your first alignment.

That is why you pay a professional to do certain jobs and spend your time doing something else that needs to be done that you are capable of doing right. A professional would have probably taken 2-3 hours to do it. The video makes it look like it took 2-3 days to get it done. Something else if you take to an alignment shop and they don't get it right or it goes out they get to fix it, do it yourself, and it's on you.

These motorhomes are so cool...I've been fascinated with them from when I was a teenager (they were in production then; they stopped production the year before I graduated from high school) until the present (but you rarely see them anymore). One question I have is when you were driving in this video there is a red indicator light that illuminates intermittently (it's located to the right of the fuel/temp/oil press cluster). What is that for or what does it indicate?

It's a great opportunity for your son to spend some time at Grandma school. You should thank her, like, a lot! When each of our 3 boys turned thirteen, they spent a month during the summer with Granny and Grandpa building stuff, a 14' wooden sailboat, 12' wooden kayak and going to concerts, museums and cultural stuff. For alignment pads, I used 2 pieces of linoleum floor tiles with grease in between. Nice fix with the 3d printed dog-bone. Are your steel wheels pressed together with a beaded joint or are they welded to the spider. Jim Bounds opines that radial tires shouldn't be used with non-welded steel wheels. Good luck on the project!

I'm stubborn and tend to make the videos I find interesting, thinking other people will find it interesting too. If you want to actually make a living doing this you need to know your audience and only make the content they want to see. In the current environment I've watched my add revenue plummet. I would say it's about 50% of what it used to be. YT is having to compete with TikTok and it shows. All the money is in the vapid inane short form content these days AKA: Shorts. It's still the same game though: Get and keep people viewing your videos. That means hypnotizing them with empty meaningless stuff that is just interesting enough to keep them engaged but not make them think too hard or challenge their beliefs/wordview. If you make videos you are an entertainer. You get paid for what you did for the audience. Video making isn't for you. It's for them. That's the way successful channels do it.
